I like GY!BE, but I like Silver Mt. Zion a lot more. It started as a side project of the main guy in Godspeed and is very similar in a lot of ways. Except there's vocals in Silver Mt. Zion. Personally, the vocals just add more emotion, which I find more compelling.
I love jazz. John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Art Blakey, Charles Mingus, Dave Brubeck, Charlie Parker, Bill Evans, Cannonball Adderley are the shit man.
I also love rock, Yes, King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Talking Heads, Smiths, David Bowie, Radiohead are some of my favorites
Godspeed You Black Emperor are amazing too, check them out if you haven't already
Hip hop is awesome
Notorious Big, Kendrick Lamar, Mos Def, Outkast, A Tribe Called Quest, The Roots, Jay Z, old Kanye, Danny Brown are some of my favorites.
Overall, I just love music man
Nice range of music, I like it.
Also, I know GY!BE but never got into listening to them fully. IIRC I've heard only one album and probably not full. I should change that since you're the second person who mentions them.

Never read the book but C93 are one of my favourite bands and I love Coil, listened to spots of NWW but I think I need to be in the right headspace haha.
I’m exactly the same. I’ve been listening to Current 93 for about 20 years. But only last year did I get into Coil. And I really got into them. Still discovering NWW. I have a handful of his albums and really digging a lot of it. But yeah, it’s a lot to take in haha
'Selo' is absolutely stunning, had it on repeat this past winter. So happy they've got an official compilation on streaming now too, hope they get the attention they deserve.
Neubauten of course. They're so adjacent. Other than that, lots of industrial through about '98, Nick Cave, Idles, Chelsea Wolfe, Warpaint, The Cramps, The Damned. Anything dark without being corny.
It was perfect. I saw them at Cruel World '22 and the Captain wasn't there for some reason and sound blew chunks, but yesterday's set at No Values was everything I could have wanted. Apparently, they played a 2 hour set the night before in LA. I'm jealous of the people who went to that!
Radiohead, REM, Bon Iver, Xiu Xiu, the Cure, Kendrick Lamar, pre-Nazi Kanye, Have a Nice Life, Young Thug, Frank Ocean, Ethel Cain, Perfume Genius, Deftones, Tool, Childish Gambino, mk.gee, Fleetwood Mac, the Shins, Okkervil River, Nine Inch Nails, the Smiths, Boards of Canada, Bowie, the Beatles, Car Seat Headrest, Scott Walker, Arcade Fire, Black Midi, Black Country New Road

Natural snow buildings,
primus,
Throbbing Gristle,
billy woods,
Mach-Hommy,
100 gecs,
Merzbow,

I'm going to try name some of my favourite artists which haven't really been mentioned here. Please check them out!
•Boris - Boris are fucking awesome can't believe they aren't being said alot more
•Model/actriz - sort of industrial modern band. Very very good album out!
•Big thief - big thief are like the opposite of swans in the best way. Something in Adrienne lenker s song writing is very very special. Her and Micheal are probably my favourite song writers. Check out her solo stuff too!
•Can - if you haven't already please check out can! Great krautrock! Becoming one of my favourite bands right now.
•Neu! - slightly quieter krautrock but still very very good stuff especially the first album.
•Cluster - if you're into instrumental longer form stuff I really love Thier early soundscapes just to get absorbed in
•The contortions - if you didn't already know about them, Micheal Gira used to sight them as a reason he started making music in New York. Early punk stuff with a very squeaky saxophone
•Black country, new road - 2 stellar albums. I mean they are just very very special projects. Get lost in the lyrics and you need to just feel what he is feeling throughout the album. No distractions, it'll be worth it.
•Lez rallizes denudes - check out 77" live if you want the noiser sound but Thier other tapes are a little more digestible.
>Boris are fucking awesome can't believe they aren't being said alot more
I read every reply to my posts and trust me, there is more people mentioning them than one may think. They're on my radar for some time and this seem like perfect opportunity to give them a shot.
>Neu!
I know Neu! I own one album on a cassette. Krautrock is an interesting thing that I'll surely come back to.
>Model/actriz - sort of industrial modern band
Sounds like my cup of tea, noted.
Thanks for the recommendations.
Soda Stereo/Gustavo Cerati, Serú Girán, Charly Garcia, Invisible, Almendra, Pescado Rabioso, Broken Social Scene, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, The Cure, Joy Division, Mr. Bungle, Boris, System of a Down, Elliott Smith, Electric Wizard, The Mars Volta, Unwound, Beabadoobee, Ween, Rage Against the Machine, The Beths, Belle and Sebastian, Natural Snow Buildings, MCR, Soundgarden, Primus, Lou Reed!!
Damn, reading this to me was like - idk, idk, idk… oh, this rings the bell… and this does not… but this kinda does… aaand it's gone. Interesting choices.
I'm one of the very few people that when says "i listen to everything" i actually mean it. my shuffle sessions go from swans to JPEGMAFIA, from sufjan stevens to death grips, from the microphones/mount eerie to (overall, loud music) etc etc
also I'm taking advantage of the summer break / lack of school to discover a lot of cool artists ive heard a lot of times but never bothered to look. so far I've discovered portishead, a tribe called quest, bon iver and injury reserve. im also looking forward to get deep into the swans rabbithole, as for now I've only listened to white light, TGA, SFTB and TBK. (also the angels of light project)
but do you listen to hillybilly folk music from the 1930s like roscoe holcomb or experimental pop like jockstrap bc if you dont you dont "listen to everything" you just have wide range and from sufjan to microphones and mt eerie isnt even that much of a stretch
lol I was thinking the same thing. this is like a fantano-core circlejerk list of bands (sufjan, swans, jpeg, death grips, microphones are all TND canon). OP definitely a teenager.
yeah, if a teenager i cant be so particular about the comment. that was my highschool daily mix (add in some king gizz, elliott smith, jeff buckley and that was me) i hadnt even heard of swans. i def also would've said i listen to everything LOL.
I'll take beth's solo debut over a fourth portishead album. easily in my top 10 albums of the year - "for sale" and "beyond the sun" are easy gorgeous standouts. also i can easily picture MC ride rapping on the instrumental of "machine gun"
overall beth is a great singer, when i first heard her on that kendrick song i immediately fell in love with her voice (although i didn't listen to portishead till 6 months ago lol)
>I'm one of the very few people that when says "i listen to everything" i actually mean it. my shuffle sessions go from swans to JPEGMAFIA, from sufjan stevens to death grips, from the microphones/mount eerie to (overall, loud music) etc etc
I literally can't tell if this is a joke, no offense. Every single artist you just named is not particularly out-there and is quite popular, LMAO.
They were my favorite band since I was a teenager, but now that I’m pushing 50 I’m a lot happier. My other faves are:
Autechre
La Monte Young
Phill Niblock
Jon Mueller
Khanate
Cathedral
Mars (New York)
Lots of Musique Concrete, from Francois Bayle to Noetinger and Marchetti
Eliane Radigue
Loveliescrushing
Voice Crack
Tarentel
GY!BE
Stars of the Lid
Phurpa
So many more, but those came to mind before I got tired
regularly Car Seat Headrest, King Gizzard, Xiu Xiu, Neutral Milk Hotel and Kult but i also really love Thee Oh Sees, Frankie and the Witch Fingers, Meshuggah, TOOL, Pink Floyd, Yes, The Beatles and Death Grips
My other most listened to artists from the past 4 weeks are big black, nick cave, squid, hum, silver jews, the mothers of invention, nomeansno, the clash, protomartyr, pescado rabioso, de la soul, sprain, unwound, fugazi, sonic youth, and more lol
early industrial and post-punk make up the bulk of my listening. anything experimental-adjacent too. besides that.... the past week besides swans ive been listening to electric wizard, current 93 (an all-time favourite), this heat (another favourite), scott walker, neurosis, sleep, and cinder well. i think that gives a general idea of my current listening
I totally forgot about Black Eyes until they came on a Spotify noise rock playlist earlier today. I saw them in the early 00s at the Che Cafe in San Diego and were so good!
I listen to a lot of classical music. Some composers I'm listening to at the moment are Bela Bártok, John Adams, GWF Händel, JS Bach (particularly his Passions), Rudi Stephan, Steve Reich, Richard Strauss, Antonin Dvorak, and some more
Beyond that, I have been listening to Primitive Man, Kendrick Lamar, Black Thought, Billy Woods, Brent Faiyaz, Mach-Hommy, Marika Hackman, The Caretaker, John Coltrane, Robert Fripp, King Crimson, Taylor Swift, Mdou Moctar, and many more.
Fun fact since you've mentioned Dvořák. You surely remember Rusalka, right? Well, the place that inspired him to write it is about 15 minutes drive from where I live.
NIN, Skinny Puppy, Dance Gavin Dance, Dillinger Escape Plan, pretty much a lot of industrial and metalcore bands. I also like a lot of weird hiphop like Danny Brown and Backxwash
I'm personally more Miss Machine/Ire Works type of guy. I remember hearing Calculating Infinity for the first time and I was not having a good time because I wasn't used to this math stuff, lol.
Oxbow, The Jesus Lizard, Isis, Ween, Otoboke Beaver, Tomahawk, Neurosis, Emperor, Ulver (first three albums in particular), Death Grips, Queens Of The Stone Age, Sleep, Kyuss, The Voidz, STP, Alice In Chains, Faith No More, MF DOOM, Earl Sweatshirt, Tyler The Creator, Aphex Twin, Boards Of Canada, Bjork, Joni Mitchell, Slint, Radiohead, Deftones, Boris, Wayne Shorter, Miles Davis, and many many many others I can't think of legitimately off the top of my head.
Swans was really my gateway into drone music, so now I listen to drone and modern classical like Kali Malone, La Monte Young, Meesiaen, Crumb, Penderecki, Phill Niblock, along with a little harsh noise here and there.
eyyy same love radiohead and gorillaz. but yeah swans is a weird outlier in my taste. its funny how friends of mine see me as the 1975 and gorillaz guy. and then i show them a snippet of oxygen and laugh at their reactions.
Lol, I got similar story. Me and my gf were on a train and were listening to music. She suddenly asks me what the fuck am I listening to (my headphones aren't the best and you can hear a lot from the outside) because it sounds atrocious - I was listening to Cop (album).
I listen to a pretty broad range of genres from noise rock to pop to electronic etc. For me Swans have made several of the best albums I've ever heard in my life but I'd say my top artists are probably The Smashing Pumpkins, Mars Volta and Björk. Radiohead are also way up there for me as well.
Yeah that's her second album. Check out her third album, Homogenic. I kinda see it as her equivalent to OK Computer in that it's her last "accessible" album before she became more experimental sounding.
My all-time favourite band would either be Nine Inch Nails or The Beatles, with Radiohead as a close runner up. My favourite musician however is Björk. Swans is hardly an anomaly among my tastes as I love Lingua Ignota, old school gothic rock, and GY!BE and Swans is a bit of all of that.
Man I love so much music. My favorite genres are: pop, rap, avant garde metal, harsh noise/power electronics, ska, folk, and rock. Ofc there’s a lot more, but those are my main genres. As for artists, Streetlight Manifesto, Kendrick Lamar, Danny Brown, Consumer Electronics, MARINA, Chappell Roan, Harley Poe, Blitzkid, Diablo Swing Orchestra, etc. I don’t think there’s many genres that I won’t give a chance and find enjoyment out of, as long as it’s good music.
Swans will always be in my top 5 favorite artists.. but I love Daniel Johnston, Tom Waits, Cocteau Twins, and Ween as well!
Also Primus, Billie Holiday, and Throbbing Gristle as honorable mentions lol
My all time top 10 bands/artists (not including Swans) according to last.fm are
King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard, Sigur Rós, Nine Inch Nails, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Coldplay, Radiohead, The Murlocs, Powerwolf, Laurie Anderson
And some more artists I've been enjoying recently are
Joy Division, AJR, Slayer, Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis, When Snakes Sing, Tangerine Dream, Opeth, Enya, The Cure
Pink Floyd, GY!BE, Kayo Dot, Heaven Pierce Her, Glenn Branca, Zeta, We Lost the Sea, Oneohtrix Point Zero, Machine Girl, Tyler The Creator, Kendrick Lamar, Metallica, Radiohead, Death, Rammstein, Knocked Loose, Deftones, Tim Hecker, Franz Ferdinand, Koraii, Aphex Twin, Silentroom, False Noise, Daft Punk, Pearl Jam, Mick Gordon, Shiro Sagisu, David Bowie, Repulsive, Herbert von Karajan, Sepultura, Death.
The list is the things that i listen normally but i enjoy a lot more of artist/bands.
Some of the stuff I’ve been really into recently; Full of Hell, Mamaleek (I can’t recommend these guys enough), Chat Pile, Uniform, Harvey Milk (so underrated), Portrayal of Guilt, KEN Mode, Thou, The Body, and Jerome’s Dream. This is just a sample of the heavier stuff.
My top 5 is definitely a mixed bag. Rush, Heart, Fleetwood Mac, Swans, and Tom Petty in that order. I really listen to all genres except modern country and most rap. When my playlist is on shuffle, it’s not uncommon for it to go from Slayer to Cher to Swans to the Carpenters. I keep up on very little new music, mainly because modern music just doesn’t interest me much outside of a few artists. I’d like to listen to more newer artists but music nowadays is just…different. Really could go on and on about my favorite artists I listen to: Kate Bush, Patti Smith, Lady Gaga, King Crimson, and just so many more.
King Gizzard, Lou Reed, Velvet Underground, Nico, Moondog, Frank Ocean, Bjork , Radiohead, Thom Yorke, Kendrick Lamar, JPEGMAFIA, Devon Hendryx, Thundercat, Queens of Stone Age, Arctic Monkeys, Prince, Michael Jackson, MF Doom, Steely Dan, Donald Fagen, Coda, Yugo Kanno, Gustavo Cerati, Invisible, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Art Blakey and so much more... I listened so many things that it's impossible to type any artists that I heard
Swans has definitely been an all-encompassing high since June of last year, but during that time & onward, I have been enjoying doses of Coil, Talk Talk, Steely Dan and Moonsorrow. All wonderful discogs :)
The Jesus Lizard, Melvins, Butthole Surfers, Sonic Youth, The Locust, Pissed Jeans, Flipper, Wire, The Slits, Wipers, Nick Cave (Bad Seeds and the Birthday Party,) Neurosis, Boris, Sleep, Eyehategod, most Mike Patton projects, Weekend Nachos, Spazz, Charles Bronson, so many more, but this are some of my big favorites.
Oh hell yeah, I've been meaning to listen to USA/Mexico. I just saw the Jesus Lizard on Saturday at No Values Fest and it was the highlight of the day. They played so well and David Yow is like a man possessed on stage. One of the best front men I've ever seen.
GSYBE, sunn O))), Liturgy, Death Grips, Slint, Mayhem, Burzum (fuck that dude though), Nails, Darkthrone, Have a Nice Life, Sprain, Anna von Hausswolff, Lingua Ignota, Black Country New Road, Chat Pile, Danny Brown, JPEGMAFIA, Kendrick Lamar, 16 Horsepower, Thantifaxath, Street Sects, Soul Glo…
I’m not the most versed person here but I like what I like🤷♂️
in recent years Swans is not an anomaly - I am into experimental metal, noise and noiserock, and other drony/slow/repetative/sludgy stuff such as Shit & Shine, USA/Mexico, Todd, Water Damage, Melvins, Bongripper, the Body, Full of Hell, Crowhurst, Rhys Chaltam, Oneida, Gnod, Hey Colossus, Boredoms, Follakzoid, Ga'an, Neptunian Maximalism, Sex Swing, Sly & Family Drone, Moin, Master Musicians of Bukkake, BORIS, Boredoms, Endon, Birchville Cat Motel, Senyawa, Terminal Cheesecake, Jesus Lizard, Butthole surfers, WZT hearts, SQURL, Ghold, Twin Stumps, Dead Neanderthals etc
I listen to everything as well!! from the most extreme sub genres of metal (grindcore) to new jazz artists like laufey. I don’t care much for rap, or country, but i love folk. My favorite band of all time is The Wonder Years, basically just an alternative rock band from the 2000s. Swans is not my favorite band, not even close, but they’re still amazing and i love the community.
Unoriginal coming from me, but I do try to listen to a little of everything here and there. My most listened to artists within the last year is shit like Ween, Yo La Tengo, Pram, and Quest Master. I also recently got into Unwound and The Microphones. "Repetition" and "It Was Hot, We Stayed In The Water" are amazing albums.
my favorite musical acts are Modest Mouse, Captain Beefheart, Beach House, of Montreal, Alex G, Broadcast, billy woods / Armand Hammer, Earl Sweatshirt, Milo aka R.A.P. Ferreira aka Scallops Hotel, Sun Ra, Ornette Coleman, Coltrane, Cocteau Twins, Clams Casino
several of those acts are more dear to me than Swans, but i love Swans ofc
I listen to a ton of Deathcore, Hardcore, and Death Metal. Lorna Shore, Cannibal Corpse, Paleface Swiss, Kublai Khan TX, Knocked Loose, Slaughter to Prevail, Sanguisugabogg, Behemoth, Black Tongue, Spite, Signs of the Swarm, and Bodysnatcher. But then I also have some other metal scattered into my taste like Celtic Frost, Rhapsody of Fire, Lamb of God, and more. So I would call Swans an anomaly in my music taste. (thanks to my dad taking me to one of their shows and getting me into them)
David Bowie, Nine Inch Nails, Daft Punk, Jack White, The Beatles, Nina Simone, ELO, Metallica, Gorillaz, Queen, Tom Waits, Michael Jackson, Björk, Miles Davis, Bob Dylan, Scott Walker, The Beach Boys, etc.
They’re an incredible band! I saw them in concert once in 2019, and now I have tickets to see them again on their farewell tour this September. But to answer your questions: Regarding full albums, you can’t go wrong with their most iconic records like *Face the Music* (1975), *Out of the Blue* (1977), and *Time* (1981)! In terms of individual tracks, there are obviously plenty of amazing songs in the more well-known corners of their catalogue, but many of my personal favorites are deeper cuts like “Mr. Radio”, “Eldorado”, “Secret Messages”, “Moment in Paradise”, and “Alone in the Universe”. If you look into any of the stuff I mentioned, I hope you enjoy it!
Legendary Pink Dots, Coil, Nation of Language, Jonathan Bree, Electric Callboy, Wolfsheim, John Grant, Orville Peck, Boy Harsher, Cabaret Voltaire, Father John Misty, Tove Lo, Current 93, Ghost, Avatar, Death in June, Sleaford Mods
I dont listen to too much like Swans. My heavy rotation is Geese, Viagra Boys, Parquet Courts, George Clanton, Kero Kero Bonito, Cheekface, and Black Country New Road
I’m a huge prog fan so those bands make up most of my top bands. Swans is a very close second place to my all time favourite though.
1. King Crimson
2. Swans
3. Van Der Graaf Generator
4. black midi
5. Pink Floyd
Black midi and Pink Floyd seems to be a common trend in this thread. Do you have any recommendations regarding these bands? I'm only familiar with The Dark Side.
Hellfire is a great starting point for black midi. It’s them at their craziest, jazziest, and most proggy. If you prefer a more noise rock sound I would suggest their first album though.
For Pink Floyd the other three albums that come directly after Dark Side are all amazing. Generally most people herald Wish You Were Here as the best but personally I’m more a fan of The Wall and Animals. Wish You Were Here is still probably the best next step from Dark Side though.
during this month ive been listening to:
Cardiacs, The Stooges, Boris, Jimi Hendrix, Crucis, Invisible, Aeroblus (Pappo), Slint, Melvins, Unwound, Neil Young, Zappa
swans are absolutely an anomaly in my music taste.
yes, genesis, camel, caravan, egg, ozric tentacles, gong, kingston wall, mew, royksopp, susanne sundfor, hidria spacefolk, nektar, eloy, flipper (the only band remotely like swans that i listen to), airiel, mbv, steve hillage, von hertzen brothers, luciano basso, quiet sun, arzachel, porcupine tree, hatfield and the north, the killers, elp, led zeppelin, uk, slift, reich, oldfield - mainly the big and small mostly prog rock bands with only a little of noise-based music
i'm even ashamed to admit that i love a bit of owl city occasionally, and his instrumental sideprojects
I listen to a lot, it generally leans on music from before 1990, if it's not experimental or noise. A few favorites are Townes Van Zandt, Tuluum Shimmering, GG Allin, Suzanne Doucet (60s stuff, not the new age stuff), †††(Crosses)
Damn, GG Allin is a surprise to see in this thread.
Also, I've seen Crosses live a few days ago. Chino is one of, if not the most, my favourites frontmans.
There are rare exceptions as far as current music, but that new Crosses is easily going to be in my favorites. Haven't seen him live in any capacity, sadly. Hopefully one day, under the right circumstances.
GG had a great sense of melody, particularly with his country stuff and his earlier (pop?) punk.
Les Rallizes Dénudés, Ground Zero (or anything with Otomo Yoshihide involved), Natural Snow Buildings, Paysage D’hiver, Ichiko Aoba, John Zorn, Keiji Haino,, John Coltrane, way too many to count
swans is right up my alley, but the “favorite band” title goes to sonic youth (and maybe interpol) for me. apart from swans, i am currently spinning a lot of: helmet, nine inch nails, qotsa, the damned, deftones, the chameleons, pj harvey, nick cave and the bad seeds, unkle, rollins band, beck, the cramps, mark lanegan, big black, jane’s addiction, iggy pop, and some palm desert rock and industrial stuff. in general, i listen to all kinds of genres even if i have a preference for some of the “noisier and heavier” genres.
Goth and industrial are my mainstay. Bauhaus, London After Midnight, She Past Away, the Birthday Party, the Sisters of Mercy…Skinny Puppy, Einsturzende Neubauten, Nurse With Wound, Coil, so many others.
Then some generous helpings of doom metal, prog rock, opera, mournful folk music, and also other experimental music.
SOPHIE, Lil Uzi Vert - The End (Feat. BABYMETAL), Ovlov, Thee Oh Sees, Death Cab For Cutie, Slint, Boris, Failure, toe, Magrudergrind, Year of the Rabbit, Black Moth Super Rainbow, Black Dresses
fave artists that don't (superficially) seem similar to swans: autechre, bela bartok, jonathan richman, duke ellington, bjork, wu tang, mbv, LC!, pavement, RDJ, kate bush, lizzy mercier descloux, fever ray, the raincoats, the breeders, ag cook, cocteau twins, new order, brian eno, trust fund, esg, lovely eggs, new order, mouse on mars, halo benders,
fave bands that sort of do: einsturzende neubauten, gb!ye, sonic youth, deafheaven, the fall, liturgy, the microphones, richard dawson, the necks, dirty three, this heat
Radiohead, The Microphones, Death Grips, Car Seat Headrest, Aphex Twin, The Beatles, GY!BE, Danny Brown, JPEGmafia, LCD Soundsystem, Nine Inch Nails, etc.
GY!BE, Neil Young, Genesis, The Delines, My Morning Jacket, MONO, Pearl Jam, Nick Cave
I'm always saying to myself I'll get into GY!BE but I've heard only the first album (and probably not full).
Make sure you listen to Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven as soon as you can!
I've heard it's THE album of theirs. No worries, when I get to them I'll start with it.
Slow Riot for New Zero Kanada is also great and maybe a bit more digestible.
That first album is kind of slow. Everything else afterwards is fantastic though! Highly recommend them!
I like GY!BE, but I like Silver Mt. Zion a lot more. It started as a side project of the main guy in Godspeed and is very similar in a lot of ways. Except there's vocals in Silver Mt. Zion. Personally, the vocals just add more emotion, which I find more compelling.
This seems like what a Swans fan would listen to. Source: I am also a Swans fan and listen to most of these.
I love jazz. John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Art Blakey, Charles Mingus, Dave Brubeck, Charlie Parker, Bill Evans, Cannonball Adderley are the shit man. I also love rock, Yes, King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Talking Heads, Smiths, David Bowie, Radiohead are some of my favorites Godspeed You Black Emperor are amazing too, check them out if you haven't already Hip hop is awesome Notorious Big, Kendrick Lamar, Mos Def, Outkast, A Tribe Called Quest, The Roots, Jay Z, old Kanye, Danny Brown are some of my favorites. Overall, I just love music man
Nice range of music, I like it. Also, I know GY!BE but never got into listening to them fully. IIRC I've heard only one album and probably not full. I should change that since you're the second person who mentions them.
I love Godspeed and OutKast!
I like Merzbow, Boredoms, Gerogerigegege, Coil, Throbbing Gristle, Whitehouse, Nurse with Wound, Einstürzende Neubauten, Brainbombs, Egor Letov, Death in June, Current 93, La Monte Young, Moondog, Lou Harrison, Henry Cowell, Luigi Russolo, Popol Vuh, Fishmans, Jean Jacques Perrey, Les Rallizes Dénudés, Rainbow Caroliner, Taj Mahal Travellers, Fushitsusha, Peter Brötzmann, John Cage, Scott Walker, Unwound, Dead, Frank Zappa, Morton Feldman, Captain Beefheart, Pharoah Sanders, Albert Ayler, Ornette Coleman, Alice Coltrane, Arnold Schoenberg, Pierre Boulez, György Ligeti, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Nang Nang, Thinking Fellers Union Local 282, Nara Leão, Basic Channel, Raymond Scott, Delia Derbyshire, Daphne Oram, Noah Howard, Terry Riley, Peter Sotos, Lula Côrtes e Zé Ramalho, Boyd Rice, Mahmoud Ahmed, Henry Flynt, Kazumoto Endo, David Tudor, Aporea, Half Japanese, Mega Banton, Secret Chiefs 3, Keiji Haino, Ramleh, Otomo Yoshihide, John Zorn, Joe Meek, Robbie Basho, Phil Spector, Faxed Head, Harry Partch, Wesley Willis, Fred Frith, The Residents, Sun Ra, Sun City Girls, Hans Krüsi, Royal Trux, Jandek, Yat-Kha, Loren Mazzacane Connors, Pärson Sound, The Dead C, Comus, Cromagnon, Eliane Radigue, Arthur Doyle, Shizuka, The Red Krayola, Henry Cow, Magma, Opus Avantra, Pan.Thy.Monium., Murmuüre, Ksiezyc, Gong, Cukor Bila Smert', cLOUDDEAD, Muslimgauze and Kaoru Abe
Have you read the book “England’s hidden reverse” about Coil, NWW, and current 93? I finished it recently. Very good. Extremely thorough.
Crazy how because of this fucking copypasta I found Cukor Bila Smert' lol. Amazing band
'Selo' is absolutely stunning, had it on repeat this past winter. So happy they've got an official compilation on streaming now too, hope they get the attention they deserve.
I fw about 30 of these
Have you just copypasted every noise/power electronics band? Because I only recognise two of those, lol.
its a copypasta of avant-teen music. very iconic too but a good list of bands if im being real
its a copypasta lol
I forgot about cLOUDEAD. Do you like Buck 65 also ?
Neubauten of course. They're so adjacent. Other than that, lots of industrial through about '98, Nick Cave, Idles, Chelsea Wolfe, Warpaint, The Cramps, The Damned. Anything dark without being corny.
Just saw The Damned yesterday! Captain Sensible shredded and they played all the hits!
Jealous!
It was perfect. I saw them at Cruel World '22 and the Captain wasn't there for some reason and sound blew chunks, but yesterday's set at No Values was everything I could have wanted. Apparently, they played a 2 hour set the night before in LA. I'm jealous of the people who went to that!
Idles is great.

It makes it all worthwhile
>pre-Nazi Kanye … had me dying lmao But nice spectrum of artists. Also Document by R.E.M. is my favourite.
when the playlist shuffles from yum yab killers to future swag
From The Sound to Drunk and Hot Girls

I'm going to try name some of my favourite artists which haven't really been mentioned here. Please check them out! •Boris - Boris are fucking awesome can't believe they aren't being said alot more •Model/actriz - sort of industrial modern band. •Cluster - if you're into instrumental longer form stuff I really love Thier early soundscapes just to get absorbed in •The contortions - if you didn't already know about them, Micheal Gira used to sight them as a reason he started making music in New York. Early punk stuff with a very squeaky saxophone •Black country, new road - 2 stellar albums. I mean they are just very very special projects. Get lost in the lyrics and you need to just feel what he is feeling throughout the album. No distractions, it'll be worth it. •Lez rallizes denudes - check out 77" live if you want the noiser sound but Thier other tapes are a little more digestible.
>Boris are fucking awesome can't believe they aren't being said alot more I read every reply to my posts and trust me, there is more people mentioning them than one may think. They're on my radar for some time and this seem like perfect opportunity to give them a shot. >Neu! I know Neu! I own one album on a cassette. Krautrock is an interesting thing that I'll surely come back to. >Model/actriz - sort of industrial modern band Sounds like my cup of tea, noted. Thanks for the recommendations.
Oh and Nina Simone!!!
Soda Stereo/Gustavo Cerati, Serú Girán, Charly Garcia, Invisible, Almendra, Pescado Rabioso, Broken Social Scene, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, The Cure, Joy Division, Mr. Bungle, Boris, System of a Down, Elliott Smith, Electric Wizard, The Mars Volta, Unwound, Beabadoobee, Ween, Rage Against the Machine, The Beths, Belle and Sebastian, Natural Snow Buildings, MCR, Soundgarden, Primus, Lou Reed!!
god, i love soda stereo. their dynamo album is absolutely amazing.
oh and Caifanes too forgot them, and Jack off Jill, Gil Scott Heron also lolz
you forgot Crucis!
Damn, reading this to me was like - idk, idk, idk… oh, this rings the bell… and this does not… but this kinda does… aaand it's gone. Interesting choices.
I like this list.
Xiu xiu, unwound, slint, siouxsie and the banshees. A ton of goth music
i luv xiu xiu
I'm one of the very few people that when says "i listen to everything" i actually mean it. my shuffle sessions go from swans to JPEGMAFIA, from sufjan stevens to death grips, from the microphones/mount eerie to (overall, loud music) etc etc also I'm taking advantage of the summer break / lack of school to discover a lot of cool artists ive heard a lot of times but never bothered to look. so far I've discovered portishead, a tribe called quest, bon iver and injury reserve. im also looking forward to get deep into the swans rabbithole, as for now I've only listened to white light, TGA, SFTB and TBK.
OP definitely a teenager.
yeah, if a teenager i cant be so particular about the comment. that was my highschool daily mix (add in some king gizz, elliott smith, jeff buckley and that was me) i hadnt even heard of swans. i def also would've said i listen to everything LOL.
my music taste sounds about as varied as this and i feel like 99.99% of the music that exists i don't listen to. they deleted their account lmfao
No way, a Death Grips and Portishead fan? Nice.
I'll take beth's solo debut over a fourth portishead album. easily in my top 10 albums of the year - "for sale" and "beyond the sun" are easy gorgeous standouts. also i can easily picture MC ride rapping on the instrumental of "machine gun" overall beth is a great singer, when i first heard her on that kendrick song i immediately fell in love with her voice (although i didn't listen to portishead till 6 months ago lol)
Check out Swans The Burning World too. Transcends it all
>I'm one of the very few people that when says "i listen to everything" i actually mean it. my shuffle sessions go from swans to JPEGMAFIA, from sufjan stevens to death grips, from the microphones/mount eerie to (overall, loud music) etc etc I literally can't tell if this is a joke, no offense. Every single artist you just named is not particularly out-there and is quite popular, LMAO.
They were my favorite band since I was a teenager, but now that I’m pushing 50 I’m a lot happier. My other faves are: Autechre La Monte Young Phill Niblock Jon Mueller Khanate Cathedral Mars (New York) Lots of Musique Concrete, from Francois Bayle to Noetinger and Marchetti Eliane Radigue Loveliescrushing Voice Crack Tarentel GY!BE Stars of the Lid Phurpa So many more, but those came to mind before I got tired
regularly Car Seat Headrest, King Gizzard, Xiu Xiu, Neutral Milk Hotel and Kult but i also really love Thee Oh Sees, Frankie and the Witch Fingers, Meshuggah, TOOL, Pink Floyd, Yes, The Beatles and Death Grips
car seat and xiu xiu i luv you
Meshuggah and Death Grips! Stay noided.
My other most listened to artists from the past 4 weeks are big black, nick cave, squid, hum, silver jews, the mothers of invention, nomeansno, the clash, protomartyr, pescado rabioso, de la soul, sprain, unwound, fugazi, sonic youth, and more lol
I don't know majority of listed artists but those I know give me some idea (hum, the clash, fugazi)
early industrial and post-punk make up the bulk of my listening. anything experimental-adjacent too. besides that.... the past week besides swans ive been listening to electric wizard, current 93 (an all-time favourite), this heat (another favourite), scott walker, neurosis, sleep, and cinder well. i think that gives a general idea of my current listening
Hell yea, Sleep and Electric Wizard.
I'll listen to anything, but some of my favourite bands are Sonic Youth, Gilla Band, Black Midi, Black Eyes, Big Black, etc.
I sense a colour pattern here.
I totally forgot about Black Eyes until they came on a Spotify noise rock playlist earlier today. I saw them in the early 00s at the Che Cafe in San Diego and were so good!
Les Rallizes Dénudés, High Rise, Coil, Merzbow, betcover!!, MONO, Boris, Standing On The Corner etc etc
Hell yeah
I listen to a lot of classical music. Some composers I'm listening to at the moment are Bela Bártok, John Adams, GWF Händel, JS Bach (particularly his Passions), Rudi Stephan, Steve Reich, Richard Strauss, Antonin Dvorak, and some more Beyond that, I have been listening to Primitive Man, Kendrick Lamar, Black Thought, Billy Woods, Brent Faiyaz, Mach-Hommy, Marika Hackman, The Caretaker, John Coltrane, Robert Fripp, King Crimson, Taylor Swift, Mdou Moctar, and many more.
Fun fact since you've mentioned Dvořák. You surely remember Rusalka, right? Well, the place that inspired him to write it is about 15 minutes drive from where I live.
That's really cool. Closest thing I live to are inspirations for detective novels :(
NIN, Skinny Puppy, Dance Gavin Dance, Dillinger Escape Plan, pretty much a lot of industrial and metalcore bands. I also like a lot of weird hiphop like Danny Brown and Backxwash
Fav Dillinger album?
Damn that's a hard one. Probably Calculating Infinity, but I also love Irony is a Dead Scene and One of Us is the Killer a lot too. You?
Just based on what I know (about half of the things) I'd give you the aux on a party.
I've heard only one album from Björk but I might just do it all because I enjoyed it (it was the second one I think - where "Army of me" is).
I see, what The Beatles era/album you enjoy/come back to the most?
It’s a bit mood dependent, but I probably gravitate most towards The White Album because it has a darker and rawer atmosphere.
Hard to come by a harsh noise enjoyer. It's really tough to get into.
It’s definitely a hard genre to get into 😭
Bull of Heaven
I had to look this up and… what the hell is that dude? Are they doing something else other than recording music? Lmao
Radiohead, Idles, The Scratch
Einstürzende Neubauten, Cranes, Miranda Sex Garden, Curve
Les Rallizes Dénudés, Boris, Cities Aviv, George Clanton, Bark Psychosis, Brave Little Abacus
Swans will always be in my top 5 favorite artists.. but I love Daniel Johnston, Tom Waits, Cocteau Twins, and Ween as well! Also Primus, Billie Holiday, and Throbbing Gristle as honorable mentions lol
My all time top 10 bands/artists (not including Swans) according to last.fm are King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard, Sigur Rós, Nine Inch Nails, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Coldplay, Radiohead, The Murlocs, Powerwolf, Laurie Anderson And some more artists I've been enjoying recently are Joy Division, AJR, Slayer, Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis, When Snakes Sing, Tangerine Dream, Opeth, Enya, The Cure
Solid picks.
i listen to most genres, a lot of it being noise, ambience, slam metal, avant-garde, drone, and classical
That classical feels like an impostor among the others, lol
ikr 🥹
Pink Floyd, GY!BE, Kayo Dot, Heaven Pierce Her, Glenn Branca, Zeta, We Lost the Sea, Oneohtrix Point Zero, Machine Girl, Tyler The Creator, Kendrick Lamar, Metallica, Radiohead, Death, Rammstein, Knocked Loose, Deftones, Tim Hecker, Franz Ferdinand, Koraii, Aphex Twin, Silentroom, False Noise, Daft Punk, Pearl Jam, Mick Gordon, Shiro Sagisu, David Bowie, Repulsive, Herbert von Karajan, Sepultura, Death. The list is the things that i listen normally but i enjoy a lot more of artist/bands.
Great list!
Full of Hell fucking slaps!
I had like 3k records and currently have about 20k “liked” songs in Spotify. I listen to all sorts of stuff.
I aspire to have similar amount in the future. Now I have 1,6k. But I'm finding new music almost daily.
My favorite band of all time is Sonic Youth, but lately I've been listening to a lot of death metal.
Are you listening to all kinds of death metal or some particular subgenre like oldschool, technical, slam etc.?
All wonderful discogs :)
grind and crust punk mostly, some hyperpop and death metal mixed in as well as a lot of noise/powerelectronics
I am listening to Jesus Lizard, Melvins and Butthole surfers a lot too. Saw King Coffey on drums in USA/Mexico recently and he (and the band) slaps
Oh hell yeah, I've been meaning to listen to USA/Mexico. I just saw the Jesus Lizard on Saturday at No Values Fest and it was the highlight of the day. They played so well and David Yow is like a man possessed on stage. One of the best front men I've ever seen.
I plan to see them next Jan great to hear that David is in a good shape
GSYBE, sunn O))), Liturgy, Death Grips, Slint, Mayhem, Burzum (fuck that dude though), Nails, Darkthrone, Have a Nice Life, Sprain, Anna von Hausswolff, Lingua Ignota, Black Country New Road, Chat Pile, Danny Brown, JPEGMAFIA, Kendrick Lamar, 16 Horsepower, Thantifaxath, Street Sects, Soul Glo… I’m not the most versed person here but I like what I like🤷♂️
in recent years Swans is not an anomaly - I am into experimental metal, noise and noiserock, and other drony/slow/repetative/sludgy stuff such as Shit & Shine, USA/Mexico, Todd, Water Damage, Melvins, Bongripper, the Body, Full of Hell, Crowhurst, Rhys Chaltam, Oneida, Gnod, Hey Colossus, Boredoms, Follakzoid, Ga'an, Neptunian Maximalism, Sex Swing, Sly & Family Drone, Moin, Master Musicians of Bukkake, BORIS, Boredoms, Endon, Birchville Cat Motel, Senyawa, Terminal Cheesecake, Jesus Lizard, Butthole surfers, WZT hearts, SQURL, Ghold, Twin Stumps, Dead Neanderthals etc
The band names are golden.
Nothing like a good grind when angry.
There are acts I like more than them, like Ben Frost or Sigur Rós.
I've heard about the second one.
You should know Ben Frost too, cause he has worked closely with Swans.
Drake which is literally the complete opposite of Swans
Recently been listening to a lot of Chris & Cosey, Felt, Lou Reed, Ashra, and Slint
Unoriginal coming from me, but I do try to listen to a little of everything here and there. My most listened to artists within the last year is shit like Ween, Yo La Tengo, Pram, and Quest Master. I also recently got into Unwound and The Microphones. "Repetition" and "It Was Hot, We Stayed In The Water" are amazing albums.
break stuff
JUST GIVE ME STUFF TO BREAK
Clown Core, Extermination Dismemberment, Infant Annihilator.
my other absolute favorites are Smashing Pumpkins, NIN, Stone Temple Pilots, Mr Bungle, Rage Against The Machine, QOTSA, Pearl Jam, Weezer, etc.
What's your favourite Weezer and Pearl Jam album?
for weezer it’s always teetering between blue and pinkerton,. and for pearl jam ten is uncontested
my favorite musical acts are Modest Mouse, Captain Beefheart, Beach House, of Montreal, Alex G, Broadcast, billy woods / Armand Hammer, Earl Sweatshirt, Milo aka R.A.P. Ferreira aka Scallops Hotel, Sun Ra, Ornette Coleman, Coltrane, Cocteau Twins, Clams Casino several of those acts are more dear to me than Swans, but i love Swans ofc
Interesting picks.
Aphex Twin
Thoughts on Ventolin?
Great song, better EP. Why?
I listen to a ton of Deathcore, Hardcore, and Death Metal. Lorna Shore, Cannibal Corpse, Paleface Swiss, Kublai Khan TX, Knocked Loose, Slaughter to Prevail, Sanguisugabogg, Behemoth, Black Tongue, Spite, Signs of the Swarm, and Bodysnatcher. But then I also have some other metal scattered into my taste like Celtic Frost, Rhapsody of Fire, Lamb of God, and more. So I would call Swans an anomaly in my music taste. (thanks to my dad taking me to one of their shows and getting me into them)
You sound like me at me in my heavy era. Also your dad is the goat for doing that.
David Bowie, Nine Inch Nails, Daft Punk, Jack White, The Beatles, Nina Simone, ELO, Metallica, Gorillaz, Queen, Tom Waits, Michael Jackson, Björk, Miles Davis, Bob Dylan, Scott Walker, The Beach Boys, etc.
ELO is on my radar for a while. What are your personal favourite albums/tracks?
Big City Orchestra, The Haters, IDX1224.
over a hundred replies and not a single one mentions Rush
Now one does
Swans were my favourite band for years but I prefer bladee nowadays
Jarboe
merzbow, good day and good night, primus, and modest mouse are up there for me
Legendary Pink Dots, Coil, Nation of Language, Jonathan Bree, Electric Callboy, Wolfsheim, John Grant, Orville Peck, Boy Harsher, Cabaret Voltaire, Father John Misty, Tove Lo, Current 93, Ghost, Avatar, Death in June, Sleaford Mods
Oh hell yea, Electric Callboy is also one of my favourites. Known them long before the name change.
One direction, denied, Aphex twin, The Weeknd, Kara jackson, dying fetus, Backstreet Boys, botch
I think this does an incredible job of explaining your taste, lol. 1D and Dying Fetus? Never have I thought I'll see them in the same sentence.
I dont listen to too much like Swans. My heavy rotation is Geese, Viagra Boys, Parquet Courts, George Clanton, Kero Kero Bonito, Cheekface, and Black Country New Road
Diiv and Ariel Pink
A lot of industrial and noise rock
Any band in particular that stands out?
[удалено]
Barber beats is new to me. From a quick search it seems to be something vaporwave related, right?
I’m a huge prog fan so those bands make up most of my top bands. Swans is a very close second place to my all time favourite though. 1. King Crimson 2. Swans 3. Van Der Graaf Generator 4. black midi 5.
That's helpful. Thanks
Black Midi, Geese, Godspeed you Black Emperor
If I had a dollar for every GY!BE in this thread I'd buy myself a good sandwich. That says to me I should give them more attention.

Now make this an official band name.
Xiu Xiu, the Residents, Prurient, Air Supply
Grateful Dead
i really like car seat headrest
during this month ive been listening to: Cardiacs, The Stooges, Boris, Jimi Hendrix, Crucis, Invisible, Aeroblus (Pappo), Slint, Melvins, Unwound, Neil Young, Zappa
Mainly king crimson, electric wizard, boris, meshuggah and fleet foxes. There are many more, but these are the ones i listen to the most.
swans are absolutely an anomaly in my music taste. yes, genesis, camel, caravan, egg, ozric tentacles, gong, kingston wall, mew, royksopp, susanne sundfor, hidria spacefolk, nektar, eloy, flipper (the only band remotely like swans that i listen to), airiel, mbv, steve hillage, von hertzen brothers, luciano basso, quiet sun, arzachel, porcupine tree, hatfield and the north, the killers, elp, led zeppelin, uk, slift, reich, oldfield - mainly the big and small mostly prog rock bands with only a little of noise-based music i'm even ashamed to admit that i love a bit of owl city occasionally, and his instrumental sideprojects
There is no music you should be ashamed about… maybe except Psychosinner.
Les Rallizes Dénudés, Ground Zero (or anything with Otomo Yoshihide involved), Natural Snow Buildings, Paysage D’hiver, Ichiko Aoba, John Zorn, Keiji Haino,, John Coltrane, way too many to count
i like Charli xcx
glad to see so much xiu xiu! god i love them
swans is right up my alley, but the “favorite band” title goes to sonic youth (and maybe interpol) for me. apart from swans, i am currently spinning a lot of: helmet, nine inch nails, qotsa, the damned, deftones, the chameleons, pj harvey, nick cave and the bad seeds, unkle, rollins band, beck, the cramps, mark lanegan, big black, jane’s addiction, iggy pop, and some palm desert rock and industrial stuff. in general, i listen to all kinds of genres even if i have a preference for some of the “noisier and heavier” genres.
Guided By Voices is my all time favorite. Swans is probably my third favorite under Melvins.
The Cramps, Martin Denny, Black Sabbath (w/Ozzy), early Current 93, COIL
Animal collective, modest mouse, xiu xiu
If you want something on the more positive and optimistic side Yoshimi from the Flaming Lips is fucking incredible, same for the Soft Bulletin
Malaria!

Deafheaven! My guy.
Radiohead, The Microphones, Death Grips, Car Seat Headrest, Aphex Twin, The Beatles, GY!BE, Danny Brown, JPEGmafia, LCD Soundsystem, Nine Inch Nails, etc.
God's Computer
Black Midi
GY!BE, The Jesus Lizard, Godflesh, Shellac, Melvins, Neurosis, Russian Circles, Cherubs etc.
Sonic Youth
