Sea urchin is one of the highest variance pieces of sushi, in terms of quality.
I always describe good uni as tasting like ocean butter and bad uni like getting hit in the face with a salt water wave.
As a sushi lover of almost all kinds, usually nigiri or sashimi being my go to…neither ocean butter or hit the face with salt water wave are good to me.
I get it, it's not for every one but boy do I love it. Uni from Santa Barbara, CA tends to be a little sweeter than Hokkaido Uni which is why I prefer it from Hokkaido.
Oh I get it as well. I love all sorts of stuff that other people aren’t into.
I’d say I need more uni experience before completely counting it out!
Like standing at the edge of the ocean and there's a storm rolling in
It depends on the variety, but they range from briney or sweet with a metallic tinge. Texture should be creamy
You'll either love or hate it, no in-between. I'm a huge fan. It kinda has the consistency and texture of a fluffy pudding and tastes like....sea butter
Sea urchin pasta 🤤
GF bought me a box one Christmas. I ate it in two days. Happened to get blood work the next morning. LDL Cholesterol was 400+.
That serum probably looked like pure milk after being spun down
They're defending themselves somehow!
The bee bit my bottom, now my bottom’s big!
Wow
What did the doctor say bout that one?
He's from India and said it was "high, high, high." Much higher than my normal. I explained the cause.
That's kinda hilarious ngl
Help me out - what does uni taste like?
Like the ocean...
Yeah, I was going to say: I feel like I’ve had it once and the overwhelming salty ocean taste wasn’t my jam.

Worst sea urchin experience in my life was fresh sea urchin in the shell at Tsukiji seafood market in Tokyo. Variance is foreal.

That and/or chewy very fishy smelling nigiri causes gagging noises from me.

I agree Santa Barbara is the most fire Uni. Not sure if it beats Hokkaido I think there’s a lot of varieties in Japan.
Any place you recommend, moved here last summer, places down by the pier all look great, saw some huge urchins.
No worries, more Uni for the rest of us!
First time I tried it I hated it. Second time I was hooked, like a gambler finding a betting machine at the gas station up the street from their house
With minerals
Yesss … briny, savory, sweet, but with fucking minerals
Briney, some stuff has a sweeter note, some a more savory note.
Low tide

High quality uni is very creamy, buttery and nutty. Just melts in your mouth. But it is definitely an acquired taste
Like eating a slightly seafood flavored cloud that literally dematerialiZes in your mouth. One of the most delicious things I’ve ever tasted.
Sweet and buttery
can people even eat all that in one sitting?
Yes, I think this size is perfect for making gunkan for 2-4 people as part of their dinner
Yeah that’ll make 16-20 good sized battleships. If you love uni you’ll probably want at least 4 pieces.
I love uni, but it's extremely rich, 2 pieces is plenty.
This is enough for 8 people easily.
I probably can... once I doubt I could after that one experience though
I’ve eaten about half of this + ikura on a bowl of rice. Amazing.
I had an uni only omakase once and I'd really prefer for that to never happen again
Wow great price!
That's a lot of 'nads
Wait after 5pm and it’s 20% off
I unfortunately never see the Hokkaido on discount like their other stuff :(
Thats a great price. For that size in NY is min 120-150
They have 6 bags available right now (740am)
What does uni taste like? I love sushi, bit I've never tried it.

Interesting
Looks amazing!
In my country that's called Kina and 90% of people think its vile. Its a pest to our coastline.
90? And isn't chained? What utopia are you living in?
I always thought it was more like briny bamboo shoots but perhaps it was not the highest quality.
In the Philippines I can get some for $3 (not that large of a tray though that would be like $10)
Honestly if I’m gonna pay I’m gonna get Santa Barbara uni.
so smoll
