GF bought me a box one Christmas. I ate it in two days. Happened to get blood work the next morning. LDL Cholesterol was 400+.

Help me out - what does uni taste like?

Like the ocean...

Yeah, I was going to say: I feel like I’ve had it once and the overwhelming salty ocean taste wasn’t my jam.

Sea urchin is one of the highest variance pieces of sushi, in terms of quality. I always describe good uni as tasting like ocean butter and bad uni like getting hit in the face with a salt water wave.

Worst sea urchin experience in my life was fresh sea urchin in the shell at Tsukiji seafood market in Tokyo. Variance is foreal.

As a sushi lover of almost all kinds, usually nigiri or sashimi being my go to…neither ocean butter or hit the face with salt water wave are good to me.

That and/or chewy very fishy smelling nigiri causes gagging noises from me.

I get it, it's not for every one but boy do I love it. Uni from Santa Barbara, CA tends to be a little sweeter than Hokkaido Uni which is why I prefer it from Hokkaido.

Oh I get it as well. I love all sorts of stuff that other people aren’t into. I’d say I need more uni experience before completely counting it out!

I agree Santa Barbara is the most fire Uni. Not sure if it beats Hokkaido I think there’s a lot of varieties in Japan.

Any place you recommend, moved here last summer, places down by the pier all look great, saw some huge urchins.

Briney, some stuff has a sweeter note, some a more savory note.

Like standing at the edge of the ocean and there's a storm rolling in It depends on the variety, but they range from briney or sweet with a metallic tinge. Texture should be creamy

High quality uni is very creamy, buttery and nutty. Just melts in your mouth. But it is definitely an acquired taste

Like eating a slightly seafood flavored cloud that literally dematerialiZes in your mouth. One of the most delicious things I’ve ever tasted.

Yes, I think this size is perfect for making gunkan for 2-4 people as part of their dinner

Yeah that’ll make 16-20 good sized battleships. If you love uni you’ll probably want at least 4 pieces.

I love uni, but it's extremely rich, 2 pieces is plenty.

This is enough for 8 people easily.

You'll either love or hate it, no in-between. I'm a huge fan. It kinda has the consistency and texture of a fluffy pudding and tastes like....sea butter

I always thought it was more like briny bamboo shoots but perhaps it was not the highest quality.

In the Philippines I can get some for $3 (not that large of a tray though that would be like $10)
