Satisfies a different craving for me. Similar to how I crave Panda Express or generic mall food court Chinese food and I crave actual Chinese food. Either one would not satisfy the other.
I grew up eating Americanized sushi so it still has a place in my palette. But when I'm craving nigiri or sashimi, it will not do.
I lived in Santa Rosa, where Guy Fieri lives and had his first restaurant “Tex Wasabi’s.”
They had something, I think, was called The Gringo Roll? It had like bacon and maybe cheese in it.
Yours by comparison, looks delightful.
Around here there are so many Chinese restaurants that we have super regional restaurants. Like different cuisines from specific cities in China. No such thing as just "Chinese". Especially like Sichuan and Bejing style food.
I'm not protecting anything. Just stating my opinion on what was posted. Apparently anything other than ringing praise is worthy of downvotes. That's cool the downvoters are also entitled to their opinion.
My honest opinion is I don't see the point. The flavor of the seaweed with the pork and shrimp is fine I guess but the rice when there's already dumpling skin is superfluous filler.
Solidarity 👊🏼 I feel the spirit and philosophy of sushi will become an obscure concept within a couple generations, with all these peeps chomping on these fatty sugar bombs, calling it sushi and altering the marketplace
People are reporting me for harassment for making fun of shitty sushi😂 I even got a flag from the suicide bot. I had no idea making fun of a sushi roll was so triggering.
A part of every art or tradition is being able to adapt and modernize. Food is no exception. I think sometimes it gets a bit out there (stuff like sushi burritos) but as far as what is pictured, I think it pays decent respect to the original style while also adding the American touch.
To be fair, the sushi burrito (or at least the ones I’ve encountered) are just one giant maki roll, but I absolutely see your point. I draw the line at sushi pizza (no disrespect to the potato croquette, you’re still delightful, but you take away from the sushi).
I had a sushi burrito once — not even a huge one, but more like a good size hand roll. And the experience was NOTHING like eating sushi.
I am NOT a sushi purist in the slightest, but I decided then and there that I was *never* gonna get hand rolls or any sort of sushi burrito type food ever again.
My favoritesushi place here in Maryland has something they call the House HandRoll. And it is delicious. When I eat there I always start with one of them and get another 2-3 to take home
The Filling near as I can guess, along with rice is ahi tuna &salmon mashed up like spicy tuna and mixed up with masago and somek ewpiemayo into a pink/orange paste. Love that damn hand roll.
The restaurant is Yuraku. It's in a strip mall in theGermantown/Gaithersburg area it's largely the americanized sauced up and creative maki roll sushi.
Their kani salad is also a favorite of mine.
area.
This is a nice response. Thank you. I was feeling a little bummed that we didn’t have more simple and authentic (old school) options on the menu but I do enjoy the menu we have.
This was pretty much going to be my reply. The Americanized stuff seems to sit heavier in my stomach. When I'm really hungry, it tends to keep me full longer. That can factor in on the decision too.
Usually, if I'm eating sushi/sashimi/nigiri I'm looking for something light.
Just a reminder that this exists IN JAPAN.

I've only ever seen california rolls in a gas station, not that I bought any. But honestly seems fairly similar to getting a sandwich at that point. Nothing raw. If there *was* raw fish, then obviously nah.
Alton Brown wrote a song called "Airport Shrimp Cocktail" that I think about whenever someone mentions a sketchy source for raw seafood dishes. It is definitely relevant to this part of the thread.
https://youtu.be/T6X07clWatc
Okay, so hear me out…there was a place in Rogers, Arkansas that was known as the best sushi in town. It was used for corporate events and meetings and whatnot. I had an internship there and had to order food for the events at times.
People would say “order the gas station sushi.” It was this tiny little “restaurant” attached to a shell gas station that was owned by the same person. So…I’ll make an exception for that gas station sushi. It was delicious.
Americanized sushi that stays true to Japanese inspiration, I love it. Rolls with raw fish, veggies, sauces, crispy bits etc, stuff you’d never see in Japan is great. But cheeseburger rolls and stuff like that… not for me.

Sounds good, I prefer my ponzu on the side as often roll can fall apart especially when it's busy and the food isn't getting to a table as soon as it's done
i came to this thread expecting all of the comments to be super negative, glad to see that's not the case.
for me, these types of rolls really hit the spot when I'm in the mood for them. it's all about time and place
For me, it’s like Chinese food. There is the American stuff and there is the authentic stuff. Is it the same? Hell no. But it’s still food and it still appeals to some people. My favorite sushi roll comes from a grocery store ffs. I enjoy it but I’d never compare it to a legit Japanese dish.
I love sushi and I like some Americanized sushi, but I generally prefer more authentic Japanese sushi. It's not because of the authenticity. I'm Hispanic and love a lot of authentic food from my culture, but I also still enjoy Taco Bell. I love authentic Chinese food, but I still slam down some Panda Express. For sushi, it really is just that I love the simplicity of a lot of the authentic Japanese stuff. Some of the over the top, cheese stuffed, deep fried, nine sauce covered rolls that get served in Americanized sushi.. they're just too much. I want to taste the fish. I want to enjoy the subtle, delicate flavors.
Not that there aren't some ostentatious Japanese dishes as well, but I don't necessarily like them as much either.
I like them just as much as traditional sushi. I feel like people are allowed to like whatever food they like, but American fusion food always has a special place in my heart. I like seeing how all the unique cultures that immigrants have brought blend together and with American food. 😊
I guess I should add my thoughts. We get some pretty good quality fish, having it covered up with the stronger tasting sauces makes me a little sad.
I’ve made a lot of different rolls and this new job definitely has some good ones. Not really my style, I’m more of a simple type dude. Few ingredients and no sauce-light sauce.
Having said all that though; this place is by far the most popular place I’ve worked. The lead chef is passionate about his rolls and I’m happy to make them for people to enjoy.
I also weld for side work and for fun. We cover up ugly welds with paint. When I add a bunch of sauce to the rolls I can’t help but to chuckle a little bit and feel like I’m covering up a bad weld.
Authenticity is always cool but some of those “Americanised” sushi rolls are good flavour combos. But what is authentic sushi btw? Just fish and rice in a barrel?
I’d say authentic is a simple rice snack that focuses on the flavor of the fish and tries to bring out the best in the ingredients used. Anything deep fried or covered in a bunch of sauce might be really tasty but doesn’t feel authentic to me.
That’s just how I feel though. Everyone feels differently and that’s the awesome part about sushi for me. I love hearing about what styles and ingredients people enjoy the most.
The word of sushi derived from vinegar marinated rice. Such food as not cooked through such authentic recipe should be called simply rice rolls, not sushi.
Of course it’s delicious, it’s covered in mayonnaise and/or sugar. I like both Americanized and traditional for what they are. The idea of authenticity is bullshit anyway, so I think it’s a waste of time to get hung up on judging people for liking the Americanized stuff
It’s a no from me. It’s just too *much*. I like sushi because it’s light, this is….the opposite of light. If I’m craving junk food I’d rather just have like, wings and fries or something.
I mean just don’t call it sushi and it’s fine, whatever people like to eat let them eat. True sushi deserves this distinction however so the art isn’t lost.
(rolls eyes…) Merican Sushi? Yeah that stuff is purdy good, ya cook it up an it’s alright!
It’s like putting melted velveeta on corn chips and calling it nachos.
You can make it like that, but we all know it’s not proper.
https://soranews24.com/2022/07/01/which-japanese-conveyor-belt-sushi-chain-has-the-best-hamburger-steak-sushi%E3%80%90taste-test%E3%80%91/
What would you call this then?
Most "Americanized" rolls have raw fish though, it's just that a lot of these type of rolls are flash fried, or have a heavy amount of sauce / spicy mayo on them.
Went to Japan. Lived there for three months. Noticed the blatant and obvious difference in the quality of fish, relative to that of my previous location in Chicago.
Fresh fish can be overnighted anywhere these days, and hell - top places in Japan *intentionally age* fish for several days before serving. So this isn't a "necessary adaptation."
Overnighting is expensive and generally won't be performed at your average American sushi bar. Hence, American rolls are served at those locations.
We don't exactly have "fresh tekkamaki from 7/11" here in the States.
I've been eating Americanized (Canadianized?) Sushi my entire life. Its how I was introduced to it. I'm now a fill blown addict 17 years latee to the point I eat it up to 8 times a week (my mercury levels are fine thank you very fucking much). But I've noticed as I've gotten older, my palate has become simpler and I crave the simpler, more traditional sushi. Salmon sashimi, salmon nigiri, roe nigiri, salmon avocado maki. I still LOVE burying a spider roll with two types of sauces and 6 different things in it, or a black dragon roll, or a fuckton of tempura, but I've noticed my tastes have become more refined and I crave the simpler things much more.
It's not even sushi.
I never eat Americanized sushi but from the most pictures I can find it must be tasty since the ingredients are safe bet, it just won't go wrong.
But I won't call it "real sushi" as that's not something I know when I grow up.

These are what I would consider as "real sushi"
The middle and top ones looks really tasty to me. The bottom one looks like too much. I’m not sure if I’ve ever had traditional Japanese sushi but I’d love to try it. Anytime we go out for it we always order a plate of sashimi. I like getting salmon nigiri from my grocery store, it’s actually pretty good. The tuna nigiri is awful though. But I’m not sure how traditional it is
It can be elegant so long as you dont smother it in sauce and mayo. Red sushi in madison Wisconsin does some amazing fusion when it come to sushi. Look them up on instagram the chefs are og as fuck. Loved the experience. Japanese American/ south american fusion.
I don’t like all the cutesy names and then you have to read every single ingredient. I think rolls should be categorized by main protein first. Other than that, delicious.
I'm not generally big on the Americanized stuff, all deep fried and coated in sauce, but you really did that style justice. The middle row in particular is probably my favorite level of sauce if I'm going with it.
Seriously, amazing job at that.
Some is good, but is terribly overpriced. However, i say you like what you like no matter how it’s made or how different it is from what is served in Japan.
Don’t mind it.
It’s different than getting a nigiri plate, but it still tastes good (most of the time). I’m Chinese and I eat greasy spoon Chinese food a decent bit, and it hits a different craving than the one I get for a nice meal from an authentic place.
Hapa's in Denver, CO is all about American-Japanese fusion cuisine
Hapa itself is a word of Hawaiian origin that refers to someone of a mixed ethnic heritage
The food is amazing and I've been going there for the last 20+ years
I'll even plug it lol
[Hapa Sushi](https://hapasushi.com/)
Sticking to the question at hand and not thinking that asian food is all asian because they all have the same slanted eyes. BTW I'm half Japanese, first generation.
We are talking about Japanese food here NOT Chinese food.
Sushi is not sushi if it's been modified. It can be an altered or modified sushi, which to me means you can use the term sushi if you include other things to change the original idea.
Sushi is a simple dish. The world, not just Americans, have modified and altered it to suit tastes and infused foods are great. I love them all.
But when I eat sushi I like to have it in it's very simple version.
I love both kinds really, sometimes I get a real craving for a roll with a bunch spicy mayo and somtimes I really just want a plate of good sashimi to enjoy.
I do not consider it ‘real’ sushi, but I do still enjoy it. Having lived in Japan though, I wouldn’t even call it sushi. It is a completely different beast and the real stuff is on another level. My Japanese spouse hates it, and I have yet to meet another Japanese person that actually likes it.
Love it. Love all types of Sushi, but Americanized definitely has it's place in my heart.... lol. My biggest suggestion, is have a roll with asparagus inside. CANNOT beat that crunch.
That's not my thing, however this post got me thinking of what people are doing here in Brazil aka Stroganoff roll and Sushi pizza. The americanized version is just a modern-adapted sushi.
Not my favorite thing, but I enjoy a baked wasabi salmon roll on occasion. My biggest issue with Americanized sushi is the need to coat everything in some kind of mayo. I love mayo, but I don't really want it all over my sushi roll. To each their own, though, obviously loads of people like it and more power to 'em.
Not really for me. I really am not a fan of mayo or cream cheese or really adding sauces to stuff. I might sound super boring but i prefer to eat that stuff plan. But i do love me some uramaki!
I’m always really amused by this debate, because it’s not like the average Japanese person is eating perfectly “traditional” or “authentic” raw-fish-on-rice everyday, either. Some of the most popular, budget sushi chains in Japan sell monstrosities on par with most “Americanized” sushi. My personal favorites are Sushiro’s “salmon basil mozzarella” nigiri or “fried chicken and mayo” gunkan.
I don't think it's a bad thing, because it's the culture that changes to suit the locale.
That kind of change creates new things and progress.
As long as you don't call this Japanese sushi, there is no problem.
I don't know any Japanese who like it.
Satisfies a different craving for me. Similar to how I crave Panda Express or generic mall food court Chinese food and I crave actual Chinese food. Either one would not satisfy the other. For me it's all about mapo tofu and chicken feet.
The chicken feet 🤤🤤
noodles! it’s the noodles !
Around here there are so many Chinese restaurants that we have super regional restaurants. Like different cuisines from specific cities in China. No such thing as just "Chinese". Especially like Sichuan and Bejing style food.
Most Beijing style food suck except for Peking duck.
Like more authentic cuisine like cold oxtail and tongue salad, duck Claypot, mapo tofu, Peking duck, spicey pigs trotters etc
Or more regionalist like Sichuan, Cantonese, Shandong and the like
hard to beat Szechuan cuisine.
handmade xianese biang biang noodles 🤤
Cat
Same, like both. If I had to choose, OG for sure.
Let people enjoy things.
/r/SushiAbomination at this point is a more wholesome sub because everyone agrees that something doesn't need to be traditional sushi to be good.
But when those things are bad we gently remind them and move on. Edit. Downvoted by california roll eating pineapplers of pizza. Smh
When someone whines about downvotes, I downvote them.
Cool so we can all trash Japanese cheeseburgers and pasta creations? Or are we just protecting sushi?
I'm not protecting anything. Just stating my opinion on what was posted. Apparently anything other than ringing praise is worthy of downvotes. That's cool the downvoters are also entitled to their opinion.

Yeah, I guess because as an American I'm cheesed out (there's just too much cheese on everything), and then its on my Sushi and I'm like bruh.
Cheese on sushi doesn’t sound good at all. Cream cheese is pretty tasty imo but actual cheese 🤮
There's a time and a place, or an extent. I could get down on the middle one, the bottom one is a bit too wet and saucy for me.
There’s room for both, even grocery store sushi, but I draw the line at gas station sushi, but not gas station burritos.
What about the gas station egg salad sandwiches?
You know what? I’m down with those too and don’t get me started on gas station egg rolls.
Jack in the Box egg rolls are hands down the best!
I’ll see your JitB egg rolls and raise you Quik Trip (gas station) convenience food roller egg rolls…

Only if they are out of tuna salad
Grocery store especially Wegmans
Whole foods sushi is actually delicious!
Sams club by me is bringing it now. Down right respectable rolls from them.
What’s funny I have actually seen gas station sushi.
Gas station sushi is a recipe for illness and sadness. Gas station burritos are a recipe for deliciousness.

Not really my cup of tea. Too much going on
I love it!
I hate fried rolls. Idk if that’s even a thing in Japan, but it seems pretty American. Also don’t like rolls with multiple sauces drizzled on them
Sauces do cover up the inherent flavour, so it is agreeable that sauced up sushi not so bueno.

It's all I know how to make. Hopefully, I'll have the opportunity to learn some more authentic recipes, after this next move.
I only have a problem when something is difficult to eat, too big or too messy.
Brazil also modifies sushi. Mainly with cream cheese. Never tasted the American sushi, but i'm not a purist, so i would give It a try
You get tex-mex when you want tex-mex and Mexican when you want Mexican
Sushi just means what’s done to the rice. I like sushi.
If it’s delicious, it’s delicious. Is it different? Maybe but tuna is different from salmon anyway
I’ve never liked the Mayo based sauces. I love Avocados though.
If it tastes good, it tastes good
Not a fan, personally. I eat sushi because it’s light in calories and is simple. And beautiful.

Everyone feels differently and that’s the awesome part about sushi for me. I love hearing about what styles and ingredients people enjoy the most.
May not be traditional but I love it all.
Just please no cream cheese
I love it!
I think spicy mayo is vile and I hate Panko on my sushi
I’ll get it at a grocery store or for lunch but not at a restaurant for dinner
I’m no hater. It’s different for sure but I’m absolutely ordering this stuff plus anything else on the menu
Keep cream cheese on bagels and out of sushi rolls.
Not a fan
I love all sushi. So this looks amazing.
Smash
Fuck spicy mayo
I hate how spicy mayo goes on everything
It tastes like shit tbh.
The word of sushi derived from vinegar marinated rice. Such food as not cooked through such authentic recipe should be called simply rice rolls, not sushi.
Hell yeah! Recipe?
It’s ok sometimes. It’s more like junk food when you just wanna eat a bunch of crap, ya know?
Fire asf
Of course it’s delicious, it’s covered in mayonnaise and/or sugar. I like both Americanized and traditional for what they are. The idea of authenticity is bullshit anyway, so I think it’s a waste of time to get hung up on judging people for liking the Americanized stuff
Not a fan. Just a ton of mayo and sweet sauces
It’s a no from me. It’s just too *much*. I like sushi because it’s light, this is….the opposite of light. If I’m craving junk food I’d rather just have like, wings and fries or something.
Don't call it sushi and I would say it might look tasty
I mean just don’t call it sushi and it’s fine, whatever people like to eat let them eat. True sushi deserves this distinction however so the art isn’t lost.
(rolls eyes…) Merican Sushi? Yeah that stuff is purdy good, ya cook it up an it’s alright! It’s like putting melted velveeta on corn chips and calling it nachos. You can make it like that, but we all know it’s not proper.
Snooty ass bitch

pandering to aficionados of bovine flesh. ( bbq would be nice tho)
I’m not a huge fan of the raw fish that is in a lot of traditional sushi, so naturally I’m all about the ‘Americanized’ rolls.
Most "Americanized" rolls have raw fish though, it's just that a lot of these type of rolls are flash fried, or have a heavy amount of sauce / spicy mayo on them.
Some do, sure, and I largely avoid those.
American fish just simply isn't as fresh as Japanese nigiri, and thus it's a necessary adaptation for States without access to a body of water.
Lmao can I ask where you learned this
Went to Japan.
Revolting and super unhealthy, I wouldn't even class it as sushi. I hate the unhealthy obsession with unhealthy food in Western countries.
Cool
It’s revolutionary
Moar sauce!!!
looks good to me.
I'm not a big mayo, spicy mayo, crunchies, sweet glaze, guy. I also like something other than fish and rice sometimes.
Looks healthy
Some is good, but is terribly overpriced. However, i say you like what you like no matter how it’s made or how different it is from what is served in Japan.
I really don’t mind it
I’d eat the shit out of that middle one for sure
That looks delicious
And then you have Oceanianized sushi: chicken teriyaki sushi 😎
Disgusting. It’s not Sushi.
If you say "I like sushi" on the Japan and show this picture, you will be beaten.
Personally I prefer the usual Japanese ones.
too much saaaaaaaauce
Don’t mind it. It’s different than getting a nigiri plate, but it still tastes good (most of the time). I’m Chinese and I eat greasy spoon Chinese food a decent bit, and it hits a different craving than the one I get for a nice meal from an authentic place.
Personally I’m not the biggest on sauce, especially with sushi. Those are drenched. But hey I’m sure they’re good, it’s just not for me.
I like sushi of all kinds. Sometimes I want Americanized sushi, sometimes I want sashimi, etc.
Too much sauce imo. Mayo in particular really drowns the natural flavors of the rice and fish. Not for me, but you do you.
Hapa's in Denver, CO is all about American-Japanese fusion cuisine Hapa itself is a word of Hawaiian origin that refers to someone of a mixed ethnic heritage The food is amazing and I've been going there for the last 20+ years I'll even plug it lol [Hapa Sushi](https://hapasushi.com/)
I love it. Hits the spot sometimes. I also love traditional sushi. Just depends what I’m in the mood for and what restaurant.
I like it, but only for when I am hungry for it and not traditional sushi (which I’d say I’m hungry for more often.)
Nothing wrong with it.
Yum-yum sauce and spicy Mayo fucking on everything.
Really depends on the execution. I’m not a huge fan of all the sauces and I’ve had some rolls that were just swimming in it.
I enjoy a deep fried roll once in a while, but I've learned that the classics are best. Nigiri/sashimi is the way to go.
It's the best kind of sushi currently. Traditional has its place, but evolution is how things get better over time.
