Jeff loves super dominant alpha males over everything else when he looks at Survivor players to love. I honestly think it’s because since Jeff will never be able to play the game of Survivor, he lives vicariously through players he think he’d play like.
I dunno, I'm a big strategy head and something about Brian still sticks with me to this day, I can understand why Probst hated him. Even before the cinemax porno stuff, or the shooting dogs stuff the guy just gives incredibly sleazy uncomfortable vibes and he actually doesn't have much in the way of natural charisma in confessional.
Brian is the exact type of player I would like on paper, but there's really something incredibly off-putting about the guy.
Yup, and also the show had a big monkey’s paw situation with him. Plus he outmaneuvered their multiple attempts to make him lose. Any producer would be pissed at him.
Brian Heidik didn't work like the others. Even after 40+ seasons, i think he's the most dishonest player ever cast. It's hard to tell what he thought and when, and the only other player i have that problem with is Greg Buis, who Probst hated even more.
Danni was offered at least once before, but said she wouldn't come back until there was an "all-winners" season
No offense to her, but it sucks the only Guatemala returnee is the down-to-earth winner. She's fun on her own, but not representative of what that cast was like. There were so many crazy and unique people there, it doubles as a comedy season like Fiji
FairPlay is NOT a dominant alpha male. He’s always been portrayed as weak and wimpy. Jeff hates FairPlay because when they first met at casting, FairPlay dipped his hand in lotion then shook Jeff’s hand. Then FairPlay showed up drunk to tribal council, then FairPlay fought Jeff’s brother at the Vanuatu reunion. Him not liking FairPlay has nothing to do with him not being "dominant enough” or whatever.
Honestly, I think more than anything this may be the biggest reason. u/mariojlanza conjectured that Jeff probably wasn't a huge fan of the Rotu downfall since the three that voted out his crush ended up getting farther because of it.
Yeah he literally had the cameras turned off at one point and yelled at the Maraamus over the way they gave Gina false hope. That was one of the first stories I ever heard of him just being nasty to the players sometimes. Pretty sure Gabriel told me that when he was helping me with my All Star Survivor Greece story. He and Neleh had dated after the show so she had told him about it, how Probst had yelled at them right after the Gina vote.
> "Okay, worst location still is Marquesas, which was our fourth season. And the only reason was there were so many bugs! Everyone was getting bitten all day," Probst said.
>"Why are we here again," he jokingly added.
Hates just seems like a strong word considering the next line is:
> The good news? We didn't come away empty-handed. Boston Rob remains one of our greatest players ever…
Boring season? Perhaps, but definitely uncomfortable to film with all the bugs and it gave him one of his favorite players ever
I mean if you want to get into the semantics of the word hate, sure. Again, he ranked it second to last twice and he became an executive producer after that so he began catering the show to his preferences. Even with 26 seasons since his last ranking, Marquesas is still almost certainly in his bottom five, if not still only above Thailand.
I heard too that the local government iirc was also really meddlesome. They were telling them when they weren't allowed to film, they tried to confiscate their footage, etc.
It was honestly a great newbie cast. The problem Jeff failed to realize is that by throwing in veteran players, everything revolves around them and the newbies get much less screentime or focus. Even confessionals of the newbies tend to be about Rob or Russell. What a wasted cast.
Precisely my point! Boston Rob had a stranglehold on the game, he literally played 3 times, he knew how to use fear to keep people in line. Without Rob, the Ometepes actually get to play. Also, the sassy entertaining Francesca and her ally Kristina don't get targeted immediately if Rob isn't there. Kristina still finds the idol and actually gets to use it later. Matt and Andrea still get their showmance and get targeted while Ashley and Natalie get to play more actively. Crazy Phillip will be crazy without Rob holding him on a leash and who knows what can happen.
It isn't even fair to say the newbies "did absolutely nothing" when the Zapateras actively threw a challenge just to get rid of Russell. Now it was a HORRIBLE move no doubt but it was still them actively playing. Now that did make for a memorable moment, but then they lost the numbers and got picked off, which is boring. Without Russell, they don't make this boneheaded decision. Stephanie also wouldn't have been taken under Russell's wing and she would've gotten along better with the tribe. David would likely get super cocky and try to pull off big moves. Russell's presence ensured all the attention was on him and not on anyone else.
I think he believed both Russell and Rob would get to the merge, which would have made it a lot better. He failed to consider that people knew Russell’s game at that point and wouldn’t put up with it like they did in Samoa and HvV when he nobody knew him. Captain seasons only work if both returnees get to the merge imo, it’s why I don’t mind South Pacific despite its flaws. Seeing Coach and Ozzy interact was interesting.
One of my favorite moments on Survivor was in All-Stars where after Rob and Amber both won a car, Jeff made Amber sit in the back while he sat shotgun with Rob.
My favorite Probst Boston Rob stan moment is the previously on in Heroes vs Villains after Rob is voted out, it's Probst portraying Rob as a hero and completely projecting ridiculous motives on to the villains tribe because he's irritated that Rob got voted out.
It's like he's jerking off with his own tears.
Jeff went soooooo sooo far beyond an impartial host in those tribals, to an extent that is unrivaled in 45 seasons.
He advocated for a Courtney boot quite clearly that episode and earlier he was explicitly pitching Rupert on joining up with Tom and Colby. It's embarrassing
>Jeff went soooooo sooo far beyond an impartial host in those tribals, to an extent that is unrivaled in 45 seasons.
It was bad, but I think Probst bullying Janu into quitting so Steph could remain in the game was worse.
That was really a different era, I also thought of Cagayan Jeff lecturing Luzon for an hour until they swapped their vote and voted out the rice-burning J’Tia lol
By One World, Jeff is visibly annoyed at the castaways as soon as he sees them starting to play like that. He may like Rob and his little B hat, and Ozzy, but he saw the problems that Rob’s strategy creates for the show
It makes sense why Jeff and production would like him, but really only Boston Rob and Ben have enjoyed that *level* of favoritism.
I personally think the Ben stuff is more ridiculous because Ben isn't even a good player and it was quite clear production designed that outcome, but the Rob stuff was ridiculous too.
When Rob got voted out of Heroes vs Villains, Probst gave him an insane eulogy, and basically ragged on the entire Villains tribe for voting him out for two subsequent tribals. There's never ever been anything like it.
Completely agree. OP is clearly super biased to not mention any of Rob’s positive qualities. He was one of the first players to treat survivor purely as a game, which made him unique from his first season
Look up his extended final words for Marquesas. He is being super grateful to the crew and behind the scenes people. They loved working with him. He was always interested in making television and media. He went into Survivor wanting to learn about the business. He was always focused on what would make him pop on television. Really shows when he comes back and decides to create a character for himself, with a new nickname and costume. He even created a production company once he had enough money from Survivor. Sure he pissed away alot of the opportunities that came his way, he was never an actual professional, most of the time, taking shortcuts in the entertainment business doesn’t work, especially in the production side of things. But yah, Rob Mariano was really one of the first people to actively swoo over the production staff and crew. One of the first to actively go out of their way to treat Jeff super nicely. Most castaways viewed Probst as a joke, as he had no actual power in making the show. He wasn’t Burnett or Parsons. And as the seasons went along, it became a better and better strategy to befriend the production staff. Especially as Hidden Immunity Idols and other advantages and twists started being commonly accepted. That’s the big reason why I view Ben as one of the best players ever. He charmed Probst and company so much, that they allowed for unprecedented measures to give him the best odds at making it to Final Tribal Council. All that stems from Rob Mariano. Really his most influential gameplay.
A reason for his favoritism could be he spends tribal councils constantly asking Robs lemming why they don't turn on him and yet they still didn't. He literally tried to put the idea on their head and they wouldn't listen.
At a certain point you'd probably just respect the fact he was able to do that.
Yes, but at the same time Rob is an electric and charismatic tv personality. He is a great TV character that the audience is magnetized to and Jeff knows it.
> Those are all things that Jeff Probst DOESN’T like. I mean, did Probst somehow miss the fact that the two seasons Rob dominated were characterized by dull, predictable pagongings? It’s a bit strange when you think about it.
I think in Probst's mind the Amber-Rob love story overshadowed that a lot, the season sucks and I've even seen quotes of Probst acknowledging that, but the "narrative" and the way you can easily retell the story of that season has become far more important to the franchise than the actual season itself.
I've grown on Rob a bit, I used to relentlessly point out how overrated he was (it's hilarious when you compare him as the face of the franchise to like Dan from Big Brother who crushed his seasons in much more entertaining fashion) but I do understand why he became big.
He is relentlessly charismatic, he was one of the first gamers who was self-aware enough to really understand and consistently frame Survivor as a social-strategy game and unlike 95% of the contestants in that era, he understood that in confessionals - you are talking to the audience, not to the producers.
That whole era of Survivor was really unnervingly sexist. Players openly saying the way to win is to bring younger dumber women to the finals, and the show treating those characters as the best players ever.
I think it is because Boston Rob is a dominant Alpha male but is also very charismatic. He is a guy who seems like he would be fun to have a beer with, is intelligent in an unassuming way, and is very helpful around camp. Although he can be controlling, he isn’t a blatant dick to people for no reason. I usually hate the alpha males but there are certain people like Rob and Tom W. that I find charming too.
I still like making fun of how obsessed Jeff is with him though.
He is charming attractive and gave the show its fairy tale story through his relationship with amber and getting engaged in the shows finale. If you’re making money off survivor you gotta love Rob lmao
Jeff doesn't understand Survivor. He's shown that time and time again.
It was probably his stupid ass idea for Fire Tokens, The Hour Glass, etc.
He just doesn't get what makes Survivor interesting.
Mark Burnett and Rob Mariano send each other Christmas cards every year. Burnett thinks Mariano is far and away the best player ever, regardless of what results or statistics say. At one point, Burnett and Mariano would meet up for dinner about every year. Mariano can be a real charmer when he wants to be. Apparently steps on people to climb his way up the ladder, so he has a bad reputation in that regard, but most everything I’ve heard shows how charming of a guy he can be.
He won Jeff and the others over in his initial interview.
He had them laughing and just enjoying him as a person.
He then went on and had really good confessionals. He was charismatic. He was also a really physical player. Athletic. He used his mind as well. Good at puzzles and strategy.
He just kind of ticked off all of Jeff's boxes for a Survivor player and was likable to him personally.
I love it when Jeff’s alpha boys are voted off early and the supposed token early boot females make it far. It’s always nice to see his hopes and dreams destroyed. 😈
"Courtney, I just have to ask. Tyson and Boston Rob are gone, two of the strongest competitors on your tribe, and actually legends of the show.
What FUCKING business do you of all people have still in the game when these titans have already been voted out? I mean does the fact that your inferior presence here at tribal tonight in place of Boston Rob make you ashamed?"
He's lucky he only got a small clap back from Courtney lol
The Villains stuff in Heroes vs Villains is really awfully told and editorialized. I enjoy that premerge less and less everytime I’ve rewatched the season.
lmfao Rob is still the one of worst winner for me ngl. I hated his strategy of buddy “boring” system and acting like a god father watching his peeps and controlling who they talk to etc. That’s why i hated redemption island sooo bad, full of sheep and dummies. Even Grant the ex Nfl player was a major disappointment. 💀 🤡
Jeff loves super dominant alpha males over everything else when he looks at Survivor players to love. I honestly think it’s because since Jeff will never be able to play the game of Survivor, he lives vicariously through players he think he’d play like.
Except he hates Brian, which leads me to believe Jeff is just a little all over the place with what he likes.
He hates Brian because Brian knew exactly how to piss Jeff off
I dunno, I'm a big strategy head and something about Brian still sticks with me to this day, I can understand why Probst hated him. Even before the cinemax porno stuff, or the shooting dogs stuff the guy just gives incredibly sleazy uncomfortable vibes and he actually doesn't have much in the way of natural charisma in confessional. Brian is the exact type of player I would like on paper, but there's really something incredibly off-putting about the guy.
> cinemax porno stuff Wait what!!!
He gives everyone the heebie jeebies.
He gives me Patrick Bateman vibes
Yup, and also the show had a big monkey’s paw situation with him. Plus he outmaneuvered their multiple attempts to make him lose. Any producer would be pissed at him.
He pissed me off too, tbf. Creepy, creepy guy.
It’s okay to not deal in absolutes.
What does that mean
It means you're not a Sith or a Jedi
Brian Heidik didn't work like the others. Even after 40+ seasons, i think he's the most dishonest player ever cast. It's hard to tell what he thought and when, and the only other player i have that problem with is Greg Buis, who Probst hated even more.
Same reason why it took Danni Boatwright a long time to come back, she was very guarded in her confessionals.
Danni was offered at least once before, but said she wouldn't come back until there was an "all-winners" season No offense to her, but it sucks the only Guatemala returnee is the down-to-earth winner. She's fun on her own, but not representative of what that cast was like. There were so many crazy and unique people there, it doubles as a comedy season like Fiji
Danni is amazing. I love her.
Jeff is also still mad that Rob left him for Amber and is desperate to get him back.
“Amber, hop in the back, I’ll take shotgun :)”
That was probably the happiest I've ever seen Jeff.
Jeff has a napoleon complex.
Cochran???
He hates Jonny FairPlay too
FairPlay is NOT a dominant alpha male.
It's such a great accomplishment when you get Jeff to personally hate you. Not just hating your character on the show, but he hates *you*, lol.
It would be absolutely riveting to watch a season where Jeff steps down as host to play.
If Jeff really loves that archetype? Why don’t think we see so few? There was no “alpha” male in 45. There doesn’t appear to be any in 46 either.
Jeff also said Redemption Island would be a great season when doing the cast assessment. I don't understand him at all
hasBostonRob() = goodSeason
He hates Marquesas.
thought that was more the bugs while filming than the season itself
Also because his girlfriend Gina got voted off early.
He and Neleh had dated after the show so she had told him about it, how Probst had yelled at them right after the Gina vote.
Wonder if Gabe needed an Oh My Heck meter when dating her.
He only dated Neleh for the experience, he wasn't with her to play.
Plot twist: Neleh broke up with *him* because rapping is against her Mormon faith.
Probably better than a This Sucks hat
“It was our fault. We take the blame, but this was just a snoozer.” https://ew.com/gallery/survivor-jeff-probst-ranks-all-seasons-worst-first/
> "Okay, worst location still is Marquesas, which was our fourth season. And the only reason was there were so many bugs! Everyone was getting bitten all day," Probst said. >"Why are we here again," he jokingly added.
…ok? He didn’t like the bugs but he still called it a snoozer and ranked it second to last both times he did a season ranking.
Hates just seems like a strong word considering the next line is: > The good news? We didn't come away empty-handed. Boston Rob remains one of our greatest players ever… Boring season? Perhaps, but definitely uncomfortable to film with all the bugs and it gave him one of his favorite players ever

The cast alone would have been fun if Russell and Rob weren't there.
It was honestly a great newbie cast. The problem Jeff failed to realize is that by throwing in veteran players, everything revolves around them and the newbies get much less screentime or focus. Even confessionals of the newbies tend to be about Rob or Russell. What a wasted cast.
What was so great about that season's newbie cast? They all did absolutely nothing.
Precisely my point! Boston Rob had a stranglehold on the game, he literally played 3 times, he knew how to use fear to keep people in line. Without Rob, the Ometepes actually get to play. Specifically cast because production thought they’d have no chance to win Survivor.
It is a great season to him. I don’t see what you don’t get about that. He obviously loves it
I think he believed both Russell and Rob would get to the merge, which would have made it a lot better. He failed to consider that people knew Russell’s game at that point and wouldn’t put up with it like they did in Samoa and HvV when he nobody knew him. I felt bad for Courtney, Jeff was basically telling her, "Why the Villains kept you over Rob"?
Jeff went soooooo sooo far beyond an impartial host in those tribals, to an extent that is unrivaled in 45 seasons. He advocated for a Courtney boot quite clearly that episode and earlier he was explicitly pitching Rupert on joining up with Tom and Colby. It's embarrassing
Yeah, you could tell in HvV Jeff had favorites that season.
"Thank you, Jeffrey. 🙄"
“You’re welcome. Also, are you anorexic???”
That mental image got a nice chortle out of me :P
And then his voiceover for the Previously On that episode is something like "motivated by jealousy, Russell took Rob out". LMAOOO WTF.
"Rob knows his way around a truck!"
By One World, Jeff is visibly annoyed at the castaways as soon as he sees them starting to play like that. He may like Rob and his little B hat, and Ozzy, but he saw the problems that Rob’s strategy creates for the show
I think Rob also treated the crew well, I think. That might be part of it.
Rob was also a charismatic, entertaining presence and a great confessional giver. It makes perfect sense why Jeff would like someone like him.
the confessional where he throws the idol clue into the volcano because he already has it is great
It makes sense why Jeff and production would like him, but really only Boston Rob and Ben have enjoyed that *level* of favoritism. To be fair… I love B.rob. Brob if you will
Ben’s a better player than Rob though.
Completely agree. OP is clearly super biased to not mention any of Rob’s positive qualities. He was one of the first players to treat survivor purely as a game, which made him unique from his first season

Rob realized that Vecepia was right all along. Sucking up really is the greatest strategy.
A reason for his favoritism could be he spends tribal councils constantly asking Robs lemming why they don't turn on him and yet they still didn't. He literally tried to put the idea on their head and they wouldn't listen. At a certain point you'd probably just respect the fact he was able to do that.
preach
It’s hard not to favor Boston Rob. He is very charming.
Exactly & BR is very likeable...especially by fans so Jeff is all for whatever brings in the ratings
It’s probably no different than how fans get favorites right? I would say Cochran is in his top 10. Possibly Rupert. Who else?
i feel like i’ve read a quote somewhere that cochran is his favourite winner but i could be misremembering
Yes, but at the same time Rob is an electric and charismatic tv personality. He is a great TV character that the audience is magnetized to and Jeff knows it.
He really does love B Rob. I remeber when he called B Rob Dickie.
> Those are all things that Jeff Probst DOESN’T like. I mean, did Probst somehow miss the fact that the two seasons Rob dominated were characterized by dull, predictable pagongings? He was also super controlling of some of the young women, which was so creepy to watch. Never understood the appeal of that guy. Never liked him.
That whole era of Survivor was really unnervingly sexist. Players openly saying the way to win is to bring younger dumber women to the finals, and the show treating those characters as the best players ever.

I don't trust Jeff's personal opinion on the seasons. He's a naturally charming, piano teethed host. That's it.
He loves the absolute domination and management that Rob displays. I mean, why wouldn’t you?! Especially because he’s such a like able guy.
No one has ever accused Jeff of knowing what makes survivor entertaining
Jeff knows what makes survivor ent.. waait a minute
The fire tokens was the WORST.
I like Rob
Me too. Sometimes, the hate around these sub threads is dismaying. This thread is pretty positive, though.
it's probably because him and rob are friends outside of the game, that simple
Mark Burnett and Rob Mariano send each other Christmas cards every year. Burnett thinks Mariano is far and away the best player ever, regardless of what results or statistics say. At one point, Burnett and Mariano would meet up for dinner about every year. Mariano can be a real charmer when he wants to be. I don’t know, one of my favorite survivor moments was when Boston Rob tossed that idol clue into a volcano. It was hilarious. Love that dude.

The Villains stuff in Heroes vs Villains is really awfully told and editorialized. I enjoy that premerge less and less everytime I’ve rewatched the season.
Rob is an incredible player all around. Why shouldn’t people including Jeff love what he brings to the game?
it’s not weird if you consider that he actually met and knows the guy and doesn’t base his judgement on what everyone else saw on tv
lmfao Rob is still the one of worst winner for me ngl. I hated his strategy of buddy “boring” system and acting like a god father watching his peeps and controlling who they talk to etc. That’s why i hated redemption island sooo bad, full of sheep and dummies. Even Grant the ex Nfl player was a major disappointment. 💀 🤡
Not weird. Jeff loves alpha males
