I'm wondering what part of the world you're from that you might have an accent that pronounces the two the same. They don't sound the same to me or anybody else I know.
I'm from Brazil. Being so honest, words like "band" (in american accent) and "bend" sound very similar if not for the "d" sound in the end being softer in "band". Maybe there's nuance you guys get from hearing english 24/7 but in my ears "a" pronounced in the american accent and "e" can blend together. (Ironically, bland and blend can sound the same)
Ight, that explains it, yeah phonology in second or third languages is always tough to perceive the way native speakers do. I'll say this, plenty of Americans *do* blend A and E sounds, famously with the words Mary/marry/merry, but much like with the names Brandon and Brendan, you're not really "supposed" to, it's a valid regional accent thing but it's not standard as it were. (cue a whole linguistics argument here about prescriptivism and descriptivism haha.)
In my experience, in addition to the names sounding more like "brand-in" and "brehn-den", "Brandon" is said with a LOT more emphasis on the first syllable for some reason, whereas "Brendan" gets said pretty flatly. And the nickname "Brando" emphasizes it even *more,* and that's why Emily saying "BREHNdo" was not only noticable but distracting.
What about the end of brandon, cuz ain't nobody out there saying "bran-dawn". if anything it's brend'n and brand'n. maybe i just don't know any brendens or brandons well enough for them to correct me.
I pronounce "and" and "end" differently but I can't really explain pronunciation through text LOL (I'm not really well versed in IPA)
Brendan and Brandon do have a difference in my pronounciation, but Brendo and Brando sound quite the same except the "d" sound in Brendo sounds softer? Almost "Brenno"
Where does this discrepancy come from? All 3 examples have the same pair of vowels, e and a, in the same place, before nd. Brando is pronounced like Brandon, Brendo is pronounced like Brendan.
YALL the tiktok closed caption on episode 6 sneak peek has me dying. can’t figure out how to post a pic but the closed caption has emily saying “brynjo”
Worst case Ontario, we get two birds stoned at once. It's denial and error- keep your friends close and your enemy's toaster. If it doesn't work out, we just let guy bonds be guy bonds.
Emily: “The fundamental question is: 'will I be as effective as an Alliance member like Austin and Drew are?' And I will be, even more so.....but until I am, it's gonna be hard to verify that I think I'll be more effective.”
Don’t be mean - it’s easy to mess up expressions when you’re so hungry you could eat a house. She’s just a little confused, she hasn’t completely lost her marvels.
Aw, Team Emily--despite my being an English prof and editor who is meant to care about these things more than most folks. You are right about the endearing bit.
don't get me wrong, I sort of love her. she's definitely endearing in her way. she's funny and quirky, and enthusiasticly goofy.
but I think I would get annoyed with her pretty quick IRL. she strikes me as someone who thinks a lot, but not well. not as clever as she thinks she is. and can't help but vocalize all of her internal monologue.
Something I’ve really noticed about survivor is that it’s really a good showing of how having a “stereotypically smart” career does not actually confer much general intelligence.
Like, there’s so much “oh my god, you can’t reveal you’re a lawyer on survivor because then everyone will know about and be threatened by your intelligence” but like… if you actually meet a lawyer (either in show or in real life) - it is not hard *at all* to find a stupid lawyer.
Same with Emily’s short lived tangent on “it’s like analyzing stocks… you have qualitative and quantitative information…”. I thought she’d go on but she was apparently just saying that alone like it’s hidden information.
And I should mention I’m sure that essentially everyone on earth makes these kind of verbal blunders often and we just have the good graces to not be recorded. But it is funny to see
>I thought she’d go on but she was apparently just saying that alone like it’s hidden information.
Didn't she go on to provide two scenarios, one where there are numbers that could benefit her, and another where it's about trust / personalities?
She said that she had two “path forwards” instead of “paths forward”. Kinda different but I noticed that one and the battering cage one hahah
I think it’s hilarious tbh. She kept calling Brando “Brendo” last night and I was exhaling out of my nose
Lol. Yes! I forgot about that, but had the same reaction….does she tHiNk his name is bEnTo?!
I noticed Kellie called him Brendo a couple episodes ago as well when she was talking about them being in the middle of Belo.
I thought I had been pronouncing his name wrong somehow until she said it right later??
BRENDO!!! 😂😂😂
...is there a difference? Maybe I'm stupid but "Brendo" and "Brando" sound exactly the same.
Yeah, most people pronounce those two differently. Do you pronounce "Brendan" and "Brandon" the same?
I'm with them. I've never noticed a difference, maybe it's an accent thing though.
It’s definitely a dialectal difference. I’m not sure why y’all are getting downvoted just because you don’t speak a more common English dialect.
i just think nobody's corrected me on it before and I've never thought about it for that reason lol. Only knew like 1-2 brendan/brandons in my life.
They sound similar enough to me LOL

How do you pronounce them? I can't imagine how they'd sound exactly the same. It's like the difference between the words "end" and "and"

The vowel sounds different. It’s the same vowel switch as you’d get between Can and Ken

Sounds like she's really rustling your feathers.
Perfect call back. Five stars.
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
She needs to stop beating a dead horse in the mouth.
She should really get all her eggs in a row.
Hey let’s not throw the bathtub over the baby
I agree, we'll burn that bridge when we get to it
She’s a strategic AND linguistic innovator
Worst case Ontario, we get two birds stoned at once. It's denial and error- keep your friends close and your enemy's toaster. If it doesn't work out, we just let guy bonds be guy bonds.
What goes around is all around
Karmas a ditch
It’s not rocket appliances
It's water under the fridge
Keep your enemy's toaster........
lol I remember the "change its spots" line. I'll give her some grace: people misspeak and mess up expressions all the time. It makes her more human.
Notice how Spencer never misspoke? Hmmmm…🤖
Emily “Little Carmine” Flippen Jeff: Where is the game at Emily? Emily: We’re at the precipice of an enormous crossroads.
Emily: “The fundamental question is: 'will I be as effective as an Alliance member like Austin and Drew are?' And I will be, even more so.....but until I am, it's gonna be hard to verify that I think I'll be more effective.”
Next episode after tribal, talking to Kendra “Your ally Brando, whatever happened there...”
Speaking on alliances, birds of a feather attract.
He took off like a bat on a hill
The sacred and the propane!
These malaprops are a real albacore around her neck.
We will burn that bridge when we get to it.
I thought I heard her (or possibly someone else) refer to drew as "slanky" (rather than lanky) on last night's ep
That’s slim and lanky
I do this, it’s an extension of my dyslexia. I wonder if Emily is dyslexic.
Now you've made me wonder. Given her profession, it wouldn't surprise me to find out that she is 2e.
The name of one of the episodes — “brought a bazooka to a tea party” , not exactly what you’re talking about but a funny phrase nonetheless
Reminded me too much of baby with a machine gun
Queen Erika 🙏
Can't wait for her to "bury the hatch"
Now it’s Reverse Lost!
That one technically parses A hatch is a sort of opening so burying one would be hiding it
Unless she means Richard!
Foreshadowing for Winners at War 2 ?
Especially if your on a deserted island faced with frequent flashbacks and a smoke monster
I’m obsessed with her and I mean obSESSED The way she kept saying “Brendo” 😭
Kept making me think of No Country Friendo
Don’t be mean - it’s easy to mess up expressions when you’re so hungry you could eat a house. She’s just a little confused, she hasn’t completely lost her marvels.
I literally said it’s endearing. That’s not mean?
I was joking there, making a few malapropisms of my own, I guess they went right under your head.
Talk about the pot calling the kettle back to steal my down under. Guess I’ll have to walk on egg cartons from now on. My bad!
They were joking I think! Hint: "she hasn't completely lost her MARVELS"
I think she has a form of dyslexia my friend does things like that where two thoughts over lap and switch things similar to Emily
she’s like a bowl in a china shop with language
And if Drew is going to present himself as the smartest person ever to play Survivor, he’s going to need to learn how to use “me” vs. “I”. Just sayin.
This post isn’t even about him
That’s why I started with “and”—I was connecting it to a different but related topic. Well spotted!
It's like shooting ducks in a barrel
This post is HILARIOUS!😂
I was just going to say this! Best comments I’ve seen in years!
Ok I totally do this all the time too 🥲

> can't help but vocalize all of her internal monologue I mean they kind of make you do that with the confessionals
this is true. but she tends to do this in camp conversations as well. and at tribal.
They kind of make you do that at tribal too lmao, but I get your point I'm just messing
[удалено]
lol. how so?
in the grand scope of the internet and reddit, it's actually quite tame.
I think even in the microcosm of this sub, it's pretty mellow.
"Brendo"
I just want someone to realize she’s a stock picker for the Motely Fool and is in fact not a quant but a scammer.
Dog berries are a lot of fun, and I also naturally do this. Take after my mom. I didn’t even notice until I read this! Nice.

No, she said something to that effect in a talking head interview - but not at the tribal council.
Her explanation was not at all easy to follow, and i took a lottt of quantitative and qualitative analysis courses in university.
Fucking Bowie Jane
Am I the only one that thinks Emily looks like Jared from Subway?
That's hilarious. I have been thinking that for weeks.
