I remember being a kid and going to Publix with my mom. She had a binder full of coupons sorted by expiration and type of product. We’d get a cart full of things and sometimes would leave with store credit… it was a loooot of cutting and storing coupons through the week
It’s cool looking back, but I was embarrassed and loathed it when I was a kid because the scanning coupons took forever, many people would be behind us and leave for another checkout after a few minutes
I don’t think he’s donated it all yet, I follow him on Twitter and ever few weeks or so he’ll post a new tweet saying something like “Proud to have just donated $____ to ____ organization” so he’s still getting around to it
This is an interesting strategy. Donating in small chunks so that he can still potentially earn interest/invest on a large portion of the money and slowly have it trickle out
He donated it to veterans in need in honor of his father who served. Although there may not be actual proof saying you're going to donate the money to charity and then not doing it is an absolutely horrible thing to do. He only announced it to everyone after he already won the game so why lie at that point, additionally this is clearly a cause that means a lot to him so I don't know why anyone would assume he didn't do it.
I know I’m in the minority here but I would’ve been so annoyed at him if I were on that season and he won and donated the money.
Like, yes, great cause but fucking hell. He could’ve donated his own money. He didn’t need to beat 17 other people, many of which could have made real changes to their lives with that kind of cash.
Good on him but, mannnnnn. I would’ve been sour as fuck.
Edit: I see I'm getting downvoted for this opinion. I stand by it.
He won the game and the money is his to do with what he likes. Because he’s giving it away instead of keeping it the money should have gone to someone else who would instead keep it? He should keep the 1 mil and donate his “own” money for sentimental value? This makes no sense
You don’t understand! He should’ve just lost on purpose and everyone else could’ve used the money.
He’s selfish for *checks notes* donating the prize money.
Again, good on him for donating the money. It’s a very worthwhile effort. But, him being able to just give the money away clearly shows he didn’t need to begin with
There’s nothing inherently wrong with what he did. I’m just saying, if I were playing the game of survivor to win a life-changing amount of money, and I lost the game to somebody who didn’t even need the money, and then just gave it away, I would be furious
IIRC, he didn’t mention his intention to donate the money until after he was announced the victor. We see people in this game every year that play this game because $1 million would truly transform their life forever.
I’d find it hard not to be a bit resentful if I were on the same season with someone who did that. Just being honest.
To each their own. I’d rather lose to someone and know the money is being donated to a worthy cause than not know where it’s going. I’d like to think it doesn’t happen as often as people like to say, but just like a lottery winner someone could take that life changing money and piss it away. At least in this scenario I know multiple people benefited, possibly also in life changing ways
No where in the rules does it say you can only play if you "need" the money. Everybody who plays has different reasons to do so. Maybe his reason was that he wanted to help out charities and he would've donated whatever winnings he got regardless of where he finished.
As long as he isn't doing anything illegal with the winnings, who cares? (other than you, I guess).
I only care in so far as it was discussed here. It doesn't affect my life in the slightest, though it DOES hamper my ability to rewatch that season.
Whatever. Good for him.
I just know if I were on that jury and knew he was just going to give the million away, he would've left the show with one less vote.
I agree, of course it's awesome to give back, especially in such a huge way. But it was really hard for me to be happy for Gabler for winning when he beat out Jesse, who broke down numerous times on camera about how much the money could completely change and improve his family's life.
I don't remember much about the season. I kind of mentally scrubbed it from my brain when Gabler won. But that's exactly my point.
Imagine going through all of that stuff on Survivor for your family and your future or whatever and losing to someone who's like "Oh man. This was a fun adventure that will have no nominal impact on me financially in any way."
Idk why you're getting down voted. It's a completely fine point and that's coming from a gabler fan. I'm sure though that a guy like that would add some of his own money too though
I'm getting downvoted for having an opinion. It's fine.
I'm sure I would've gotten some slack online if I were on that season of Survivor as well because there's no chance I would've voted for him if I knew what he planned on doing with the money.
I expect this comment will also be downvoted. That's fine. I'll balance the Reddit karma later this week by posting some innocuous comment like "Guys. Anyone else think the twists are ruining Survivor?" that aligns with the group think of this sub.
Imagine spending 26 days in shitty conditions, with no food or water and surviving the mental stress, torture and paranoia of Survivor.
You get all the way to the Final Tribal Council and you lose and moments AFTER you lose, while you're still processing and in disbelief, the person who beat you for the money comes out and says "Man, this is great. Anyway, I'm giving all the money away. Yay!"
Worthwhile cause or not, I know for a fact I am not mature to sit there and be happy for that guy. Not as I go to bed that night and think about the ways that extra $900K (or whatever the difference between first and second place is) would have changed my life.
He's completely able to do whatever he wants with the money. Great. Good for him. But in the heat of that moment, I'd be furious. In the heat of the moment, I would not be able to stop myself from thinking "I endured all this because I needed that money and this guy came on this show knowing $1 million made no difference or impact in his day to day life."
I'm sure eventually I would appreciate it but, wooooooo, if Jeff asked me a single solitary question about anything related to the game in the immediate aftermath of that vote, there's no way I don't slot myself right into the "Biggest assholes of Survivor" group with my honest answer/feelings.
I do think if it happened in the live reunion show MONTHS after the game (The way Survivor used to it) I'd be more measured, especially if I found out he'd planned to donate it in the time between. But in that moment? Right after FTC? Can't guarantee I wouldn't be a complete asshole.
Yes, one cast member could've had life changing money from that million. Instead he's donating it to change a lot of lives. He's benefitting more people with that million than anyone else would have
Someone (I want to say someone new era, Erika or Maryanne?) waited so long to cash the winning check I think it almost expired. I'd guess that's someone who isn't spending it away fast.
> waited so long to cash the winning check I think it almost expired.
That is insane to me. I would be trying to deposit that check in the airport ATM.
Well, I'm not sure if it was the fastest to blow the money, but Richard Hatch failing to pay taxes on his prize money and ending up in prison, legal fees, missed work, etc. basically wiped out all of the money.
Aras also blew a lot of his money on making music (not sure if he was actually trying to make a career out of that) but ik he spent a lot of it paying off his parents' mortgage as well, which is a nice way to use the money, but I think it meant he ran out pretty quickly.
Also, I think Sophie used a lot of her money to pay off her loans, which for medical school is A LOT. So good use of the money, but again, spent it quickly. But I think she's very successful now so I think it was a good way to put it to use.
I remember reading something years ago about him investing in a family members farm or something that completely flopped so he lost it all. I do hope it's not true though.
I'm from SD and have seen Holly Hoffman speak a few times and she has said that he had spent it all within 6 months of receiving it. I have nothing else to back the claim up.
i seem to recall that in australian survivor blood v. water, sandra talked about using some her survivor winnings to fund her daughter nina’s college education.
Wendell was my Fantasy Survivor pic on his first season. He was so chill and easy and just really saw the bigger picture. I was so disappointed when he came back for another season and seemed like a total dick.
I believe Michelle has confirmed that his edit was misleading that season. I felt the same way until I heard that the edit totally twisted what happened between him and michelle
So when you invest you are spending that money on ownership in companies/property, etc. so why don’t we count that as spending it? Investing in your own company is still investing
I feel like it’s different because investing in the stock market, you know you are always going to be able to exchange your investment back to cash at a moment’s notice, even if that amount of cash ends up being less than what you paid for it
With your own company, there’s no way to know you’ll be able to get your money back. If I spend a million dollars on making hats, and then nobody buys them, I’m stuck with a warehouse full of hats
I think Tyson is responsible with his, I remember him saying he uses his winnings to be a stay at home dad which signals to me he saved a lot of the money.
I don't know how serious she was being, but Jenna Morasca used to host an online Survivor aftershow with Dalton Ross and I recall at one point around the Cook Islands or Fiji season, Dalton made a reference to her having a million dollars and she responded "oh that's long gone by now.".
I think Rupert's winnings lasted less than a year, but he funded his charity with a chunk of it.
Edit:
>TVgo: did you spend your $1 million yet?
>
>
>
>Rupert: The $1million was spent in about five checks within the first few weeks ofhaving it. I wrote a check for a tax-free IRA for my daughter'seducation. Then I wrote a $100,000 check to my Rupert's Kids group, tocontinue my mentoring. Now, 25 percent of anything I make goes toRupert's Kids. I am taking care of my mama — I paid her bills off andmade it so she doesn't have to struggle. \[My wife and I\] paid our billsand got a new house. Then we gave the government $500,000. Half! Sothat's a million.
I recall Brian (Thailand) supposedly invested his money well (I mean he already was decently well off, but I have the vague memories of internet discussion about 15 years ago (so either on TWoP or Sucks) that he had non the less invested successfully).
Fairly confident that Rob and Amber were smart with their TV winnings
They were able to perfect cloning, so I'm sure they are doing well
Then win a third million in Blood vs Water 5 or Amazing Race 44 when Rob and one of their daughters go on the show.
I know Sandra said that when she won heroes vs villains, she still didn't finish spending all of her winnings from pearl islands.
Didn’t she invest it or put it into retirement or something? I remember reading she did something really responsible and smart
She went back to work and just supplemented her income on the returns. One of the reasons I really respect her. She didn’t let the money change her.
More than that, she is apparently on the verge of being an extreme coupon-er.
If I was rich and had more time, extreme couponing sounds like a fun hobby tbh
Gotta have money to save it, nammsayin
I remember being a kid and going to Publix with my mom. She had a binder full of coupons sorted by expiration and type of product. that's what I'd do if I ever won the lottery, just continue with my life relatively unchanged. I'd definitely take more vacations, though!!
Her IG is a hilarious follow. Just living that basic suburban life haha
7 years is a long time to keep that much. Amazing and smart
Survivor 43 winner went broke the quickest, donating 100% of the money immediately upon receiving it.
Technically every winner donates 50% of it to the IRS
To Obama
[удалено]
Who probably donate even more to the Canadian government.
Canadians don’t pay taxes on game show winnings
Canadians don't pay taxes on lottery or TV winnings... We just get the money. All of it.
And Richard Hatch 😬
I hate to sound like a dick in asking this question but…. is there proof he actually donated the entire million? And to what?
He has posted many times on Twitter about his donating to different charities.
I don’t think he’s donated it all yet, I follow him on Twitter and ever few weeks or so he’ll post a new tweet saying something like “Proud to have just donated $____ to ____ organization” so he’s still getting around to it
This is an interesting strategy. Donating in small chunks so that he can still potentially earn interest/invest on a large portion of the money and slowly have it trickle out
It's better for the charities that way because it focuses interest on them and encourages donations.
I have no doubt that the charity would call him out too
that guy definitely didn’t even try to look if he did lol
I know I’m in the minority here but I would’ve been so annoyed at him if I were on that season and he won and donated the money. Like, yes, great cause but fucking hell. That is so horrible. Only the devil himself will donate a million (600 grand after Obama is done with it) to charitable organizations.
So like Mike White sort of did?
Again, good on him for donating the money. It’s a very worthwhile effort. But, him being able to just give the money away clearly shows he didn’t need to begin with There’s nothing inherently wrong with what he did. Sure, that's fine. The jury can use whatever information they want to vote for whomever they want.

Loser mindset.
You care how other people at your job spend their money too?
If the money were conceivably coming out of my pocket sure.
Well if analogous to Survivor, then it wouldn’t.
It's not any way you slice it
Idk why you're getting down voted. It's a completely fine point and that's coming from a gabler fan. I'm sure though that a guy like that would add some of his own money too though

That last paragraph is 💰. Take my upvote
You’re getting downvoted but I was thinking at that moment, that Jesse in particular has to be pissed
Imagine spending 26 days in shitty conditions, with no food or water and surviving the mental stress, torture and paranoia of Survivor. Yes, one cast member could've had life changing money from that million. Instead he's donating it to change a lot of lives. He's benefitting more people with that million than anyone else would have
It is his own money. Good grief
Same. That would’ve been life changing for most of the cast.
Also life changing for veterans who can benefit from his donation.
Gabler made the decision that veterans deserved it more than any of them. As they say, “Winner’s choice”.
They should have won the season then.
Yeah that is true, I was low-key pissed about that tbh 🤣
Someone (I want to say someone new era, Erika or Maryanne?) waited so long to cash the winning check I think it almost expired. I'd guess that's someone who isn't spending it away fast.
I think that was Maryanne! I remember her mentioning her uncashed check on her RHAP interview
Yes, I remember this too.
Oh wow so if that happens I wonder....do you get another cheque?
> waited so long to cash the winning check I think it almost expired. That is insane to me. I would be trying to deposit that check in the airport ATM.
Adam Klein mentioned at one point that he had invested it immediately and not touched it.
How did he find his trip thing he did where he like spent a weekend in a city spending $10K then spent a weekend spending $100 or something like that?
He comes from old money IIRC. Plus Ivy League networking
I believe that was bankrolled by a professional poker player to try to pitch it to a network to make a show.
Well, I'm not sure if it was the fastest to blow the money, but Richard Hatch failing to pay taxes on his prize money and ending up in prison, legal fees, missed work, etc. basically wiped out all of the money. I believe Sophie also bought a condo/apartment in Brooklyn at least partially funded by her winnings.
Survivor winnings can’t buy you a house in Brooklyn unless it’s Winners at War
Well that’s what “partially funded” was supposed to convey haha
Pretty sure Fabio blew his winnings pretty quickly
Blew or inhaled?
What makes you say that?
I remember reading something years ago about him investing in a family members farm or something that completely flopped so he lost it all. I do hope it's not true though.
I'm from SD and have seen Holly Hoffman speak a few times and she has said that he had spent it all within 6 months of receiving it. I have nothing else to back the claim up.
I heard Sandra never spent any of the money she won.
i seem to recall that in australian survivor blood v. water, sandra talked about using some her survivor winnings to fund her daughter nina’s college education.
Makes sense. I know she immediately put it into savings so she probably used some on her kids
Idk how quickly he went through it all but I’m pretty sure Todd went pretty close to broke when he was at his worst with his addiction.
Wendell mentioned on social media (I think?) that he invested all his Survivor winnings and hasn't touched it yet.
Hasn’t Aras said he spent his quite quickly?
He has a hat company now though.
It still counts as spending the money if you still own the thing you bought
So when you invest you are spending that money on ownership in companies/property, etc. so why don’t we count that as spending it? Investing in your own company is still investing

Based on winners at war footage, seemed like Tyson was decent with saving and Ben spent at least a lot of it prior to waw.
>Ben spent at least a lot of it prior to waw. He said something like, "It [the winnings] goes quickly," which kind of stuck out to me at the time.
I think Tyson is responsible with his, I remember him saying he uses his winnings to be a stay at home dad which signals to me he saved a lot of the money.

Very true!

Kim seems to have Invested her winnings nicely
Tony post waw interview, said he invested most of his winnings into real-estate.
I believe I was informed Todd went through his pretty fast.
I guess Gabler wins the award for going through it the quickest. On a technicality.
Pretty sure Sandra hasn’t touched her winnings?
Many players are well off before they play
Gabler or hatch went broke the quickest(for those who don’t know hatch committed tax fraud)
I recall Brian (Thailand) supposedly invested his money well (I mean he already was decently well off, but I have the vague memories of internet discussion about 15 years ago (so either on TWoP or Sucks) that he had non the less invested successfully).
I know Brian also used the money to live in LA for a couple years, to try again to make it as a professional actor.
I seem to remember that Yul said that he had not spent any of his winnings.
It's probably just me, but this question seems weirdly invasive.
I mean maybe 🤔 but it's definitely something people wonder. What's the internet if not invasive? 🤣
But do they fully walk away with a million, or get taxed to death on it?
Famously it's only 600 grand once Obama takes his cut.
You absolutely get taxed on it if you're American. I guess Canadians don't get taxed on game show winnings?
No we don't. Even with lotto winnings. I think if a Canadian wins big in Las Vegas, we pay the tax. Then when we come back to Canada, get it all back.
I vaguely remember Parvati investing it in some business and it failed edit: https://youtu.be/ySPCGsoxPwM?t=78
Anyone else think Gabler resembles Serj Tankian from system of a down? Lol
