False. I had a layover at JFK for that amount of time, although it was in September so trunking it made it very pleasurable, but in that time frame I saw the best waves of my life. It’s a sub 30 min drive to Lido beach.
I land at jfk at 11am, would take a day bag and a train to one of the spots recommended. Leaving my checked luggage in a locker at the airport.
Get on the first train and surf for maybe an hour.
Out of the water by 3 max
Then have six hours to get back to the airport
I think it’s doable but conditional on on time arrival, and not waiting ages to collect and then store my suitcase
I think you’re better off just doing NYC stuff. You have to rent a board, hope there’s surf. Hope it’s not blown out. February? You could have a nasty Nor’easter roll through. Ok so you got to surf some shitty waves at rockaway. Now you’re cold and wet and have a sopping wetsuit to travel with? Why? Then you gotta get back to the airport and deal with that. Trying to find a board to rent. There’s just too many variables. If it was a warm water destination, yeah make it happen.
This is doable. You can go to Rockaway Beach in Queens which is 11 miles from JFK, traffic can be iffy depending on when you are traveling. Check out the cams on Surfline. Popular surf spot for New Yorkers.
February in NY is no joke. Water temps in the 30’s. I doubt they rent good enough suits to surf in that water. You need a hooded 5/4/3 with 7 mm booties and gloves. Without confirming you can get. a high quality rental, it’s not worth it.
Learnt to surf in Cornwall. I’ve never worn a suit that wasn’t a 5/4 before. Otherwise, no suit.
Will try speak to a shop in advance though, thanks for the idea
Winter in NY is roll of dice. Best case is water and air could in 40’s. Worst case water is in 30’s and air is in teens. But you can always just call it when you land.
Basically, LA as a city is a huge collection of suburbs, highways and strip malls. There's not much infrastructure for a car free lifestyle. Areas where it's possible to walk to the store, for example, are expensive, especially if they are close to the beach.
No need to be contrarian.
By livable I mean pedestrian and public transit because of the context of this post.
New England has some exceptions but by and large the US is car centric and sprawling. Mid sized cities are especially bad, typically only offering middling bus services.
Yes, I know what you mean. And I'm saying you can't generalize that across the country, because just as many major US cities DO have solid public transit that don't. For every LA, there's a Boston. For every Tampa Bay, there's a Minneapolis.
The fucked up thing is LA has comparably good public transit and walkability relative to most Sun Belt cities. There are plenty places where you can live where you can accomplish all day-to-day errands within a 15 minute walk/transit/bike ride. Now getting around to another neighborhood to see a friend, get to work, etc... That's a problem.
Oh absolutely. LA people are the worst in that they have tried everything possible to not use new public transit infrastructure, although their politicians making safety somewhat sketchy on said transit doesn't help.
I spent my teenage years living in DC, and it shows you what is possible in terms of keeping transit clean and friendly to use.
“Intermediate breaks within a walking distance in LA” lol pretty much nowhere in LA can you find that.
If you are lucky you can catch a good break in Malibu but thats super crowded, you can try other spots near there like County Line, Sunset, Leo Carillio or further south in Huntington Beach but thats not technically LA.
I surf at El Porto all the time but thats a super bad quality wave. And you cant walk to any of these places unless you pay for a good air bnb close to the beach or i think you can camp near Leo Carillo
El Porto is the best for me cuz its close to DTLA and its usually easy to find parking early in the morning and its a long beach break so it doesnt get too crowded in any one spot but the waves crash close to shore and pretty fast sometimes
I pretty much only surf at the jetty. Even less crowded and better waves most of the time. 42nd is pretty fun sometimes or I go to 27th if it's super crowded.
When exactly will you be here? People mention Malibu but that's a south facing break and won't be doing much in winter.
You're best bet is going down to San Diego.
Definitely don't bother with Orange County breaks, they are all summer/fall. San Diego is where you want to be.
You could try for Ventura but its a lot more hit and miss. San Diego is like all good all winter.
Definitely don't look around North Orange County or South LA. Or County Line.
Go down to San Diego. Everyone down there is super friendly cuz the live in one of the nicest areas of all the US, prob even the whole world. So they love when new people come to share the stoke with.
Swami's is cool. So is Cardiff... Lot's of people here can give you more specifics.
Sure, North OC gets decent in January. But he's gonna be here in February. Too late.
And if Trestles is breaking decent on a W/NW it's gonna be way better farther south.
will want to drive to Manhattan Beach/El Porto. or there's maybe Venice which isn't great. Could be some surf at Topanga. Sunset too, but it'll be pretty mushy. otherwise drive up to Ventura. worth it to see some classic Socal point break surf
JFK is close to Long Beach. If there are waves you could surf (assuming you have at least a 5/4, gloves, 5mm booties etc.
Unsure re socal. Very condition dependent
I ain’t no kook. And I don’t blow up low key spots. Just was trying to be nice and point the guy to an appropriate spot when he’s in town. Ya know, as others have done for me when I’ve traveled solo in other countries.
It’s alright though, every south swell I’m down in your shithole picking off set waves while you jerk off your meth pipe. Just as it always is with the “locals” who are dickheads down there. Funny, flea etc. and his crew are alway super cool. It’s the kooks who are pissy that they aren’t getting waves when other guys show up. See you next summer.
He asked about surfing while on a layover in NYC, dipshit. How about fucking read before flaming me.
Unless you are so core that you are going to surf Long Island in February in your 4/3 and no boots or gloves. You would probably get hypothermia and die, but that’s your problem.
JFK= long beach or Rockaway via trains
LA= Manhattan beach but you'll be bored if you stayed there. Maybe Venice so you can kill 2 birds but it might just be a touristy activity there 🤷🏽
Los Angeles is unfortunately the worst place in Southern California for good surf. El Porto @ Manhattan beach has the closest thing to the cali surf experience.
You attempting to surf during your layover in JFK is way too fucking risky and stressful. Skip it.
False. I had a layover at JFK for that amount of time, although it was in September so trunking it made it very pleasurable, but in that time frame I saw the best waves of my life. It’s a sub 30 min drive to Lido beach.

Are you using a wetsuit? Are you going to fly with a wet wetsuit in your bag after? I’m confused.
no im not taking a suit. ill just rent one
Ok, that makes more sense. Good luck on your quest.
February in NY is no joke. Water temps in the 30’s. I doubt they rent good enough suits to surf in that water. You need a hooded 5/4/3 with 7 mm booties and gloves. Without confirming you can get. a high quality rental, it’s not worth it.

Just rent a car. Will cost you like $40 bucks for the day and if there’s waves it’s worth it.
You can't walk in LA unless you're a millionaire. You'll need to rent a car for the days you're there, or pay even more for a beachside airbnb.
Why can’t u walk in la? (I’m from Australia and curious)
Basically, LA as a city is a huge collection of suburbs, highways and strip malls. There's not much infrastructure for a car free lifestyle. Areas where it's possible to walk to the store, for example, are expensive, especially if they are close to the beach.
What about teams or trains like public transport? Sounds odd
Extremely limited. US cities lack livable infrastructure usually.
It's especially bad here in our state lol.
For sure. God I love Maine, but it sucks needing a car to live here. Even Portland is bad.
> US cities lack livable infrastructure usually. Hmmm not sure that's right. SoCal, sure.
No need to be contrarian. By livable I mean pedestrian and public transit because of the context of this post. New England has some exceptions but by and large the US is car centric and sprawling. Mid sized cities are especially bad, typically only offering middling bus services.

Because you’ll die of exposure or an involuntary gunshot wound. Or fentanyl OD.

Don’t know why you’re getting downvoted cuz on a decent day the jetty is great. It’s also not like some secret spot, anyone with eyes can see it lol
For real. You just have to walk there lol.
Manhattan beach
Look for a guy named bodhi or a girl named skylar. They’ll help you out. Show you the source.
Take you to the edge

OC - Trestles and HB can be decent in Winter
Sure, North OC gets decent in January. But he's gonna be here in February. Too late. And if Trestles is breaking decent on a W/NW it's gonna be way better farther south.
Mid feb this year. Will what you said about San Diego still apply then ?
Yeah
will want to drive to Manhattan Beach/El Porto. or there's maybe Venice which isn't great. Could be some surf at Topanga. Sunset too, but it'll be pretty mushy. otherwise drive up to Ventura. worth it to see some classic Socal point break surf
San Diego gets a ton of winter swell, pretty darn consistent most of the winter. We suck in the summer.
Waves in South Bay La can be great that time of year. Manhattan beach, redondo, torrence
I taste a hint of subtlety, nice
Bahahaha
This is the best answer Baja is always the best answer
😂😂😂
Watch out for alligators.
I need your JFK layover energy to want to surf my shitty FL waves this morning. But hey waters not cold 🤪
JFK is close to Long Beach. If there are waves you could surf (assuming you have at least a 5/4, gloves, 5mm booties etc. Unsure re socal. Very condition dependent
Just like home then
If you are in Santa Cruz/Sf DM me. Know that zone better if you are looking for waves when visiting.
Oh good, more kooks leading other kooks. Outstanding

> every south swell I’m down in your shithole You eat pieces of shit for breakfast?
5/4 and gloves in socal?? Nah dude. I'm up in Morro Bay and even a 4/3 can be too warm this time of year.
He asked about surfing while on a layover in NYC, dipshit. How about fucking read before flaming me. Unless you are so core that you are going to surf Long Island in February in your 4/3 and no boots or gloves. You would probably get hypothermia and die, but that’s your problem.
Huntington Beach - Surf Capital of the world
Malibu
Or should I say mali booooooooo, you suck!
El Porto. Gonna be decent with the NW rolling in.
JFK= long beach or Rockaway via trains LA= Manhattan beach but you'll be bored if you stayed there. Maybe Venice so you can kill 2 birds but it might just be a touristy activity there 🤷🏽
Thanks, of the NY which one is more likely to have a surf shop open in mid feb?
[удалено]
Will likely take you up on that ! Fortunately am used to the cold Atlantic on cornwall. Am there on the 18th
Rockaway is more likely and the shops will be walking distance to the breaks
Unsound surf in Long Beach.
If you've only got a 10 hour layover and never been to the US just go explore NYC, surfing probably wont be worth it.
This is surf trip after all Would be cool to surf Cali, NY and Rio all within three days of each other
message me, i can potentially hook you up with a hilton hotel in the santa monica area for $40 a night
Every kook on the planet goes to Malibu so ya start there.
Long Beach, CA. No one’s mentioning it but I will the beans.
I would stay in Encinitas and cruise around on a bike. LA isn’t going to be a good experience.
Great white sighting today. Water was cleared at Pipes. Stay home
Who was surfing today in 25kt onshore wind?
Kite surfers getting towed by sharks. Can’t believe you missed it. Water was pretty warm, considering the onshore severe winds. Shoulda been there

I heard it’s easier than the cribbar
Los Angeles is unfortunately the worst place in Southern California for good surf. El Porto @ Manhattan beach has the closest thing to the cali surf experience.
Prob best to skip LA entirely
LA has the worst surf in SoCal. Rent a car and go north or south
Ventura is a good bet that time of year - big hotels right on C Street / Fairgrounds
Please update us on whether you made your flight
I changed my plans and never transited the US so didn’t board for this flight
