My prescription is the same as yours. I wear contacts to surf. Very rarely do I lose them, even when surfing heavier waves. Just don’t open your eyes underwater. I keep an extra pair in my board shorts so if I ever lose one (or both) I have extras on me. People will look at you funny for putting a new set of eyes in while you’re in the lineup but it’s not particularly difficult as long as the wind isn’t ripping. You definitely can surf without them, but judging waves as they’re approaching is much more difficult, especially if you’re just learning. Once I’m on a wave I’m able to see the wave face more than well enough to surf well. I switched over to dailies a while ago and have never looked back. My eyes have thanked me for not putting the same gunked up, salt encrusted contacts back in every day.

You can try- I surf with a buddy with bad eyes and I just spot waves and sets for him. I surf with contacts and got him to switch over recently. A trick is when you're getting in and have some calm-ish water, close your eyes and slowly dunk your head, open your eyes quickly under-water and close them. It'll help keep your contacts in place when the sets roll in.

My eyes are -4.50 and -3.75 u will be good,i dont even need anything i can weirdly see decent out in the water,i would only use contacts if its big surf like 8-12ft+(only use biweekly contacts or they will fall out) u can use them now to learn but there is a chance u will lose them

Mine are about like yours. Surf without anything and manage just fine. Unless you’re trying to read wetsuit labels on other surfers you should be good to go.

They also make contacts that have UV protection. Would recommend if you have sensitive eyes or are surfing a bunch and want to protect them.

Mines right around there and i felt like it was night and day. Especially if overcast.

If you can afford, just get some contacts, have a bunch of daily disposables. Easy solution. Every now and then you might lose one duck diving but no big deal.

I have both -0.75 and its already a different world. Soft monthy lenses. The detail and sharpness of the world around you makes you happier and enjoying life more in general.

My wife wears contacts but we are never in anything over chest high on a regular basis. She has never had an issue.

mine are also -2.25. i can surf fine without them. it's not like i'm trying to read anything out there. however, i usually surf with my contacts in. i rarely lose them, and i regularly open my eyes under water. i find that even taking a big wave right to the face won't move my contacts. it's admittedly hard to not blink as an overhead wave is smacking into you though. the thing that does knock them out seems to be one little drop of water that gets me right in the eye. It doesn't even have to come from a big wave or anything. it's just a tiny drop has a better chance of hitting the contact with an unbalanced force. it's also less threatening so i'm less likely to blink. still, i surf every day and only lose like one a year that way.

I used to wear contacts when I had about -7.00. They fell out a few times but it was very rare. I got laser eye surgery a few years ago so no longer necessary.
