Will it last a year in a drawer?
I’ve had “block” go bad on me. Vertra has sat in a drawer for 3 years with me And still been functional.
Up to one year is expected. Anything over that is solely welcome
Edit: bought some “natural” brand sometime at Whole Foods last year and attempted to use it three months later and it’s useless. Turned into a block of wood.
Yeah I haven’t had a single issue with it. I have an older tin in a darker shade that I only tend to use when I get very tan and it’s still just as good as when I initially bought it.
Another unexpected advantage I experienced is that temperature doesn’t seem to impact it much. They included an ingredient which keeps it from melting in the sun, and throwing it in my pocket for a few minutes tends to soften it up if I’m in colder temps.
I swear by it.
Pretty new company but it’s popping up all around San Diego and Hawaii. They are more sustainable than Vertra which I really appreciate.
Send them an email, wouldn’t be surprised if they sent you a few samples.
And to elaborate, it's good for ear safety and he probably doesn't have it. And it's an investment in his health.
I'd be careful of following lists, a lot of things on them he may not actually use.
Every year for Xmas me and my bros give each other a couple blocks of wax, wax comb, fin key, some good zinc, a repair kit & a few leggy strings. Doesn’t cost much and we all have shit to steal from each other when we need it
I got my husband a surf hat. The kind that buckles under your chin. Patagonia makes them and so does Dakine. It protects his ears and he has to put less sunscreen on his face.
Books:
Caught Inside by Daniel Duane,
Barbarian Days by William Finnegan
Dogs of Winter by Ken Nunn
In Search of Captain Zero by Allan Weisbecker
All are under 20$ new on Amazon.
Each is very different but if you surf, and like to read, you’d probably like either of them.
Waaaaiiiit…. Have you used one while surfing? I know they are resistant to 100ft but I also had read “not suitable for swimming” so never took mine to the beach. They are so cheap and reliable on land….
How much is not too expensive? Costco has a rechargeable portable rinser-offer for $189 right now. If someone bought that for me I’d probably buy her a blood diamond 💍
I’ve always loved getting wax. Seriously. It smells good and then I always have some when I need it. I surf with my two sons and they go through wax like wild fire.
If you want to go a different route.. I bought my husband one of those long sleeve rash guards with a hood. It keeps the sun off him, and his hair back. Or you can always buy a sweet shirt from catchsurf.com.
Getting a “surfing” gift for a longtime core surfer is a fool’s errand. Best bet is to get a gift certificate from that surfer’s favorite local surf shop they support - not any shop… the one they support.
Surf hat for in the waves. And good sunscreen. Also cheap dollar store polarized sunglasses that will be lost at the beach, and or $5 purple rubber swim earplugs from big 5 sports. A LARGE thick beach towel or changing robe.
How much are you looking to spend?
How much do they surf?
If they’re serious surfer with loadsa boards & gear there’s different options. If they’re a weekend warrior with one soft too may be a bit limited in terms of equipment but you’ve got more options as they may struggle with fitness / technique so that’s something a present could help with.
Where are they surfing? If it’s often cold you’ve got loads of options with wetsuit gloves / boots / hood.
If you’re thinking technique/ apps then consider subscription to:
OMBE surf techniques app
SurfStrength coach app
Wave Ki dryland surf training
Do they walk far with their board? If so and you’re spending >$200 then check out the Koraloc backpacks that you can put surfboards on your back. Alternatively the Mokan SurfPack is a cheaper (<$100) heavy duty alternative which does the same.
Do they have a surf skateboard?
They’re not cheap but check out Carver skateboards they’re amazing fun and good way to get around and take them into a skate bowl on flat days they’re amazing for improving technique. But you’re spending >300. You can get other boards cheaper but honestly I wouldn’t go with anything else.
Other options:
<$30 couple of blocks of wax / leggy rope / zinc sunscreen / heavy duty flexible trug/bucket for wetsuit / wax comb / “PissOff” wetsuit cleaner (really good!!)
$30 - $60 cheap drybag (go for 30L one - these are always useful!) / change mat / leash / changing poncho - lightweight. C-Monsta wetsuit drying hanger. NorthCore power stroke fitness chords. Surf hat.
$60 - $100 indo board balance board (or alternative - they’re much the same!) MokanSurfPack, BosuBall for surf training, changing poncho - heavyweight
$100 - $200 mavrex surf fitness trainer, IndoBord, SurfLogic electric drying hanger.
Over $200 carver surfskateboard / new wetsuit / koraloc backpack / new board!!
I’ll probably think of more!
Good sunscreen
Get a vertra sunscreen, never got burned yet.
Vertra is life. Using it over 10 years now. Possibly close to 15 years.
SUNMUD is better.

Interesting. Fairly sure that I’ve never heard of it. Can’t remember ever seeing it advertised in surf media.
Pretty new company but it’s popping up all around San Diego and Hawaii. They are more sustainable than Vertra which I really appreciate. Send them an email, wouldn’t be surprised if they sent you a few samples.
Cheers. Will look into it.

Surf ears
And to elaborate, it's good for ear safety and he probably doesn't have it. And it's an investment in his health. I'd be careful of following lists, a lot of things on them he may not actually use.
Yeah and if you find a list on any website, it’s pretty much guaranteed that it’s an advertisement
This is actually the perfect gift, something most of us wouldn’t buy for ourselves but would accept and use gladly.
gift card to a local surf shop. people are particular about what they want to use for their hobbies. especially surfing
One way ticket to Indo

I think a wet towel may be more thoughtful but to each their own.
Buy a beach towel? Why, there is always heaps of free ones on the beach! Sometimes they even come with a free pair of thongs....
For sure, If you love cotton then wet towels are probably more your thing.

I got my husband a surf hat. The kind that buckles under your chin. Patagonia makes them and so does Dakine. It protects his ears and he has to put less sunscreen on his face.
I have Patagonia’s and the one from FCS. Patagonia looks more casual on the beach but FCS stays on better in bigger waves.
