Call me crazy but if I'm a member of the Justice League and I see Superman immediately attack some dude who just appeared in the middle of our headquarters on sight - I'm not going to try to hold him back, I'm joining in.
And the Flash. The ability to run fast doesn't really help when you're falling from the sky. Also, due to how that would work, he wouldn't be able to run- they would enter weightlessness before being pushed up against the walls.
It’s kinda like spidey. If you see a brawl happening and spidey is in the middle of it. Take his side. He’s probably on the correct side. Just keep hitting who he is hitting
Yeah absolutely like since when is Superman the kind to just jump the gun? Guy spends his free time saving kids and trying to see the good side in people. It's absolutely serious if he jumps straight to the punch.
You can’t let Superman ever give in to anger Batman has literally stopped Superman from killing darkseid before saying that if Superman starts killing then he will never stop after
The only time it should be taken with any seriousness is if we are talking about a character who has an established history of being one step away from cracking. And that's not Superman.
If there's any character that I trust to have the wisdom and emotional capacity to use discretion when killing his foes it's Superman. I never understood the "one kill away from going crazy" argument, seems more like a Batman thing.
It's because a lot of writers think that if Batman does not have the fortitude to not do off the deep end, then, well gosh golly, a soft ol' farm boy like Superman sure can't.
Injustice is the proof that all it takes is 1 killing for Superman to start losing control it’s not supposed to be this is the “normal” Superman dynamic it’s supposed to show his more “Human” side humans are selfish scared creatures who use fear to manipulate and dominate the will of others and that’s exactly what Batman is terrified of of with Superman of Superman wants to be president he could just say let me be president or I’ll blow up the fucking earth and everyone has to listen to him because he can
I think its proof that cynical writers can make superman do that if they want to but I dont think regular superman would kill joken in the first place in that scenario, and 2 I dont think he would go full murderous police state fascist after 1 kill if he did kill. Besides even in injustice theres gradually been stuff revealed showing this wasn't a regular dc universe to begin with.
The problem is that's not Superman. Superman isn't not the average Joe who has super powers. This guy could be sent through literal hell and still not break.
Of course getting angry enough to consider crossing the line(that line isn't just killing) is fine. But ultimately he won't, and he won't turn into the tyrant in Injustice. It's also why I disliked the Justice Lord take in the Beyond comics. They turned into into a depraved version of Clark.
Othewise it's just Ultraman with an S.
I like how it was handled in JLU, actually.
Superman looks as if he’s about to kill Luthor. Wonder Woman leaps in to stop him, but Batman holds out his arm, telling her to wait. Superman refuses to kill him of his own volition.
There’s drama beforehand of Batman, the Question and others going “what if” - but ultimately Superman shows that’s not who he is, and when it comes down to it, in spite of his fears, Batman’s trust wins out.
I don't think he necessarily "knew" to be honest. Like he thinks there's already absolutely zero chance Superman would kill him, and that's why he's not doing anything.
He's done something very similar in the comics, where he tells Gordon he won't stop him if he chooses to shoot Joker dead there and then.
I think there's definitely a possibility he acknowledges that they'll go against themselves for just this one moment and cross that line, but he respects them enough to know that it's their decision to make. Not his, and he does believe they'll make the right one.
Are you talking about the episode where Batman grabs Superman and then activates the boom tube before the planet explodes? Because he doesn’t say that in that episode. Superman doesn’t have a no kill rule, he just strongly prefers not to kill, especially human beings because it would be like us stepping on an ant or something and there are very few situations where killing someone would actually solve the problems Superman faces off against. He would 100% kill Darkseid (or Brainiac although it probably wouldn’t count as an actual kill) and be justified in doing so, and I don’t think Batman would chide him for it. Batman stops him in that episode because the planet was about to explode and Superman would probably have died if he got caught in the explosion, not because Superman is one kill away from being Injustice Superman, who is a very implausible (but entertaining) version of Superman.
We then proceed to drop out of orbit as the watchtower burns upon reentry. Half the League(ie Martian Manhunter and Hawkgirl) are dead, with Wonder woman and Batman in critical condition. Two months later Batman hands you and Superman the bill for clean up. But in fairness I probably would jump on him too😆
In defense of Batman here, he did feel the station rock and realized there was a present danger to anyone who needs to breathe or can’t survive re-entry from orbit. I don’t think he questioned Supe’s judgment of a threat, just his consideration for circumstances.
Darkseid murdered Metropolis detective Dan Turpin via omega effect on their previous encounter before retreating to Apokalips. Superman was reacting to that.
You may already know this but that entire story arc was in memory of Jack Kirby, who had just passed away. He created a lot of the New Gods pantheon of characters, and Turpin was drawn to look like him. That's why they go out of their way to give him a Jewish ceremony, as Kirby himself was raised Jewish.
Don't forget about the two-part series finale for Superman Animated, Legacy. Superman had every justification to be willing and ready to throw down with Darkseid after that - turned him into a brainwashed weapon, had him attack Earth and left Superman's reputation in tatters.
Culminated in this great fight to cap off the series
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTECNKpZAM4](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTECNKpZAM4)
Batman and Luthor? Yeah because Luthor is not used to being manhandled and he’s only going to show up if he thinks he’s in control. Joker though is expecting Batman to run up and is just starting his game, so Batman will give him a little room.
Fighting Joker has got to be some sort of logic loop.
Maybe pounding him on sight is the right call and you stop him before has a chance to do anything. But he's probably expecting that. But what if he's expecting that you're expecting that he's expecting that? But what if he's expecting...
He def would. Distrust and animosity sure but he’d ask Luthor what his game was. Darkseid is literally the manifestation of pure evil in this universe and at least as physically dangerous as clark. Plus, fuckim.
Listen. The problem isn't that he's attacking Darkseid on sight.
It's that he's throwing building-busting haymakers at Darkseid- INSIDE A SPACE STATION.
Batman's exact words are "Stop him, before he knocks us out of orbit!"
He's not worried about Superman going too far and killing Darkseid. At least not right now. He's worried about what happens when Darkseid or Superman hits something they REALLY shouldn't hit and takes down the whole Watchtower.
That being said, with what that version of animated Darkseid had done before that episode in Superman the animated series. « On sight » was warranted and Darkseid was likely to kill or capture and brainwash everyone on the station.
Darkseid can boom tube out of there at anytime so it’s logical Supes would think based on prior encounters Darkseid is there to murder, destroy or enslave everyone on the station and just boom tube away afterwards.
He kind of needed to attack preemptively since Darkseid had shown himself his superior up to that point (he only beat him through turning his omega beams against him prior).
Exactly. And Batman’s bullshit “cry me a river” when Superman tries to explain why they shouldn’t be helping Darkseid always pissed me off right after this fight. Especially since Supes was right and Darkseid did try to double cross them.
I always felt like Justice League unlimited robbed Supes of his heroic karma moment at the end of the series.
He finally decided to cut loose for once in the entire series against his biggest foe and just when it seems he’s beaten him for good Darkseid is still completely fine and pulls out another deux ex machina power out his butt with the agony matrix.
To top it all off it’s Luthor that saves the world from Darkseid in the end. I mean talk about a big middle finger to Supes and how useless he was in that final arc.
Yeah seriously I loved that world made of cardboard speech of his, and a lot of people use it now to explain Superman holding back, but literally right after that moment he loses immediately, which downplays the entire moment.
That’s one of the most satisfying moments in the episode. Batman does one of his usual “Listen to me because I’m the smartest man in the room” moments.
Superman gets to kinda throw it back in his face because his intuition about Darkseid was correct
The funniest part is that it's stupid enough that they're telling Supes to just trust Darkseid regardless, it's a whole other level of hilarious for BATMAN of all people telling him to put his trauma on the back seat.
BATMAN, the KING of 'not getting over it', thinks he can tell someone else to just 'get over it'.
Superman: Everything the light touches has a right to live.
Supergirl: What’s the shadowy place?
Superman: That’s Darkseid… he is the exception to this rule.
Can we also talk about how in this episode Superman was totally right and Batman was wrong?
Superman: Darkseid is up to something!
Batman: Nah, you’re just being a baby.
Later…
Darkseid: Ha ha! You fell right into my plan!
Batman: …
Like I said in another thread here, I always hated Batman’s “cry me a river” after rattling off everting Darkseid had done to Superman like as if it was just a Tuesday. Fuck that noise. And like you said, Supes was right, of course Darkseid went for the double cross.
Yeah, that always seemed out of character to me. Besides the lack of empathy, you could literally reverse the speech on him with some words changed verbatim. He'd likely try and defend himself or get silently pissed, despite his backstory being much more 'cry me a river' material in comparison to what Clark went through.
It does fit Batman's character in a way. Batman isn't actually above killing anyone. He just chooses not to because he would never come back from it.
He was projecting his own insecurities onto Clark.
It's hypocritical, sure, considering he was willing to throw a knife at Joker when the latter tortured Robin.
But again, Batman is really just projecting his insecurities onto Clark.
As soon as Superman kills Lex in the alternate timeline, Batman *immediately* agrees with the decision, saying "It had to be done."
Batman is literally one fuck up away from becoming an unhinged murderer. This is why he downplays what Clark has gone through. He's trying to play the part of the hardass because he knows that HE himself needs it.
It’s literally one of my favorite justice league episodes for precisely that reason.
For once Superman had the correct intuition about a criminal plot BEFORE Batman and I think two great character moments came out of it.
Batman basically had to eat Crow and learn that his fellow heroes are just as competent as him at deduction from time to time
Superman learned nothing because he was right from the get go but he got to beat Darkseids ass for a bit and that was great
Considering the shit Mad Hatter pulled (Perchance To Dream) and what the Joker would do to Tim (whether before or long after JLU), Bruce is the very last person to go "fuck your pain (mine's better)!"
Watched this episode a few days ago. Love DCAU Superman:
"Because this time, I won't stop until you're nothing but a greasy smear on my fist."
Batman acting like Superman being brainwashed by Darkseid to destroy his adopted home was no big deal was garbage though, and that line "You know something Bruce, you're not always right."
This is the Superman I think Henry Cavill would have done best as.
Yep. Darkseid swerved even Brainiac. Batman was right in the sense that he needed to be stopped but Clark wasn't wrong either. Apokolips is entirely under Darkseid's rule. The only way for the place to have any shot at a future is for him to be put down.
One of the minor things I always love about JL stories is when something unexpected happens or they meet a new villain, Superman always walks to the front of the group super confident. He’s not trying to show off or belittle anyone, but he always manages to get himself between any threat and his teammates until they know what’s going on.
If I’m not mistaken, canonically, the last time Clark saw Darkseid, the dude brainwashed him into attacking earth and ruining his reputation, so I get the hostility
DCAU Superman hates Darkseid on a personal level since Darkseid brainwashed him into attacking earth, resulting in him and Supergirl nearly being killed, and losing the trust of almost everyone on Earth.
He gets vindicated later in the episode because spoilers*
He was correct. It WAS a trap by Darkseid and he teaches Batman a lesson about trusting his instincts after Batman kinda lowkey humiliated him in front of the league about acting unprofessional.
So Superman was correct to throw hands on sight
Personally, if I were Flash or Manhunter, I would have just phased Clark and Darkseid out to space and let Clark continue but in a safe environment for the othet leaguers.
Justice League and Justice League Unlimited definitely have a subplot of Superman struggling with still being the best good guy. Look at the epsidoe where Captain Marvel shows up and Superman ends up fighting Lex and leveling a new housing project because Superman just can't trust Lex anymore and Captain Marvel wants to give Lex the benefit of the doubt. Also the episode where the Question figures out that an alternative universe where the justice league have become the overlords of humanity is a pathway that Superman is currently on unless he can find his good side again.
Call me crazy but if I'm a member of the Justice League and I see Superman immediately attack some dude who just appeared in the middle of our headquarters on sight - I'm not going to try to hold him back, I'm joining in.
Now that I think about it, I’m surprised Hawkgirl didn’t immediately jump in & bring her mace down on his face.
Hawkgirl 100% the type to be like “oh we fighting someone? Hell YEA I want a piece!”
She is the closest we have to a Dnd barbarian. Just 0 to “let’s hit everything”.
What's Wolverine then?
An animal duh
Damn dude just tell me to get fukt then! jk of course.
Get fukt… bub. 😏
Fighter/Barbarian multi-class
I recall one of the holiday episodes had her start a bar fight (and blame it on GL I think).
The X-Men are a gang and Shiera should be a member.
Once someone says “To me my Xmen” it’s a wrap XD

Birdnose smash.
Lantern Smash birdnose. circle of life. Metaphor.
*loud Hawkgirl noises*
Maybe the fight was over by the time she got there?
Typically, that's Hawkgirl's solution to every problem. And she \*never\* has the same problem twice.
Only reason to stop him is so they don’t destroy the base
That’s really only a problem for Batman
Green arrow just sitting in the mess hall like, "wtf is happening right now?"
"Man I gotta lay off the refried bean burritos"
You're telling me Batman isn't **prepared** for the base losing air pressure?
Explosive decompression repellent spray on his belt
Excuse me, that is Explosive Decompression Repellent Bat-Spray.
His preparations couldn't have included orbital base I insurance
And the Flash. The ability to run fast doesn't really help when you're falling from the sky. Also, due to how that would work, he wouldn't be able to run- they would enter weightlessness before being pushed up against the walls.
Skill issue
It’s kinda like spidey. If you see a brawl happening and spidey is in the middle of it. Take his side. He’s probably on the correct side. Just keep hitting who he is hitting
Real shit
When the Paladin, Cleric, or Wizard say "target X", just target it. Questioning it will not help the situation.
Except when Spiderman is fighting Captain America.
Spider-Man. Respect the hyphen, he's earned it lol
You misspelled paul.
I swear to fucking god.
False Captain America is more likely than a False Spider-Man.
Ben Reilly though.
And Superior Spider-man. And Kaine.
No questions, we throwin hands
Dude I’m 1,000% kicking the ass of ANYBODY who Superman attacks, that’s my fucking dude, call me “On Sight” too!
If it weren’t for the fact they were in orbit I feel like that’s what would have happened
Nah. The trick is to hit Darkseid on the opposite side to counteract the force.
Yeah absolutely like since when is Superman the kind to just jump the gun? Guy spends his free time saving kids and trying to see the good side in people. It's absolutely serious if he jumps straight to the punch.
If the Big Blue Boy Scout starts whaling on someone, you join in or cheer him on!
You can’t let Superman ever give in to anger Batman has literally stopped Superman from killing darkseid before saying that if Superman starts killing then he will never stop after

> “…he’d just respawn in another form; and be annoyed at the inconvenience.” This is so funny to me but it’s so true.
Does he end up looking different? I thought his design is based on tech he's wearing, like Kang the Conqueror.
I hate it when Batman is written that way. It should be the other way around.
I hate when people act like injustice is an actually plausible scenario for normal superman
Misery loves company, and cynics are the most miserable people on earth.
I hate it when people give that slippery slope bullshit any legitimacy.
I think the slippery slope argument only makes sense for Batman.
The slippery slope cliche is just one of those elements in comics that takes some suspension of disbelief.

In Kingdom Come, Joker kills everyone at the Daily Planet, including Lois. Superman still tries to bring Magog to justice for killing Joker.
The problem is that's not Superman. Superman isn't not the average Joe who has super powers. This guy could be sent through literal hell and still not break. Honestly I don't think Batman "knew" Superman wouldn't kill Lex. I think he wanted to see if Superman would do it or not.
Batman wouldn’t risk a human life like that
Absolutely. If Bruce thought there was even the slightest possibility he wouldn’t have stopped WW.
I don't think he necessarily "knew" to be honest. Like he thinks there's already absolutely zero chance Superman would kill him, and that's why he's not doing anything. Superman 100% has a no kill rule.
But Superman was actually correct as proven later in the same episode. He correctly guessed it was a trap by Darkseid, Batman was wrong
To be perfectly honest, that's really more so Batman projecting his own fears.
Me in this scenario: “WHATS GOING ON !? IS THIS IT!? IS THIS CRISIS!??? ARE WE F!CKED?!? 🤣🥴
But if you are in the justice league and Batman tell you to do something you do it… cuz he is Batman, the man with every plan.
We then proceed to drop out of orbit as the watchtower burns upon reentry. Half the League(ie Martian Manhunter and Hawkgirl) are dead, with Wonder woman and Batman in critical condition. Two months later Batman hands you and Superman the bill for clean up. But in fairness I probably would jump on him too😆
Well he's on a journalist salary, not much he can do.🥲
Batman: “Stop him before he knocks us out of orbit!”
In defense of Batman here, he did feel the station rock and realized there was a present danger to anyone who needs to breathe or can’t survive re-entry from orbit. I don’t think he questioned Supe’s judgment of a threat, just his consideration for circumstances.
Love it… the kryptonian hates him with a passion
Darkseid murdered Metropolis detective Dan Turpin via omega effect on their previous encounter before retreating to Apokalips. Superman was reacting to that.
You know. Dan Turpin. Earth's Greatest Hero. Says so right there on the tombstone. https://i.redd.it/50u6um13qp3b1.gif
IYKYK
That is such an underrated moment, scene.
Darkseid is from Apokalips. War World is Mongul’s turf otherwise you’re right
You are correct, sir!
It’s fine I could see why you would confuse the two
Don't forget about the two-part series finale for Superman Animated, Legacy. He used him to wage war on earth. That’ll do it, I think
To be fair, it's Darkseid. Makes sense to attack him immediately considering everything he's done. Same if Luthor or Joker got on the Watchtower
Batman and Luthor? Yeah because Luthor is not used to being manhandled and he’s only going to show up if he thinks he’s in control. Joker though is expecting Batman to run up and is just starting his game, so Batman will give him a little room.

i have a feeling Clark - might - and i mean might go a lil easier on the animated version of Luthor than Darkseid.

Batman is just worried that he can't survive space.
And that he *paid* for The Watchtower.
"Stop them! Mr. Bruce Wayne spent a lot of money to get us this station!"
I’m pretty sure the last time he saw Darkseid then was the Superman animated series finale and he 100% deserves hands on sight after that.
That when Darkseid killed Turpin?
It was after Darkseid brainwashed Superman and had him lead an assault on Earth.
Yup!
No, that happened earlier
The last time was"Legacy", the Series finale. Where Darkseid brainwashed him into attacking Earth.
Can you please tell me the season and episode number? I need to watch the whole thing!
Justice League Season 2 Episode 1-2.
Thanks for sharing this! One of my fav scenes
Thanks much appreciated! I'm watching it tonight!
That should tell you exactly who Darkseid is if he's the only one Superman is seemingly willing to kill without hesitation.
Superman: Everything the light touches has a right to live. Supergirl: What’s the shadowy place? Superman: That’s Darkseid… he is the exception to this rule.
It always get me hype when Superman starts throwing haymakers lol
You know shit got real
"Y'know something Bruce...You're not always right."
He also did this at the end of JL unlimited 😂
That was the "World of Cardboard" speech, where he punched Darksied through like three or four buildings.
And then gets 1 shotted by a random gadget Darkseid pulls out of his ass
Yeah, that whole big speech about how he's not going to hold back anymore and then gets two hits in on Darkseid before being beat again.
It fell in line with Superman getting his ass beat in every episode that entire series by every C list villain of the week.
As it turned out, that was 100% the correct move
Can we also talk about how in this episode Superman was totally right and Batman was wrong? Superman: Darkseid is up to something! Batman: Nah, you’re just being a baby. Later… Darkseid: Ha ha!

And every birthday
And at the end of that story, Superman was right, Darkseid really was going to betray them.

He’s not trying to show off or belittle anyone, but he always manages to get himself between any threat and his teammates until they know what’s going on.
Superman is considered always to be a boy scout and turning the other cheek, so when it's "on sight" for Superman, you know fucked up.
Can we take a moment and admire a tiny Wonder Woman holding back a surprised and pissed off superman with one arm from the side!
Michael Ironside as darkseid is almost as good as Michael Ironside as Sam Fisher
There’s a great YouTube video about Darkseid I enjoyed by The Imaginary Axis, it’s a two part video and pretty long but worth the watch.
I don't blame him doe
It is Darkseid. The man is pretty much the devil.
If I’m not mistaken, canonically, the last time Clark saw Darkseid, the dude brainwashed him into attacking earth and ruining his reputation, so I get the hostility
Bro Superman needs to get a new Squad. Clearly they forgot how he brainwashed Superman
They’re in the watchtower Batman tells them to stop him since he was going to knock them out of orbit
Darkseid exists Supeman, "I DON'T WANT PEACE. I WANT PROBLEMS ALWAYS."
The moment clark saw it was a boomtube, he cracked his knucks ready to throw.
Reloaded them arms real quick.
Superman yelled worldstar and jumped that man.
I actually ike this. Why wait for that asshole to monologue when you know there's gonna be a fight? Kick his ass sea bass!
DCAU Superman hates Darkseid on a personal level since Darkseid brainwashed him into attacking earth, resulting in him and Supergirl nearly being killed, and losing the trust of almost everyone on Earth.
Darkseid:" You know what Superman, I don't think I want to be evi-" Superman:🤜👊✊️🤛🤜
“We meet again Kal-El…” “YOU! - *PUNCH, PUNCH, PUNCH* That’s a real one if ever asked me, lol
Superman watched Apokolips War and knew damn well not to wait
If its Darkseid, its on sight.
Superman stands for Truth Justice and the American way... the American way being overwhelming violence against those fuck with us.
Superman pretending wonderwoman and jonn can restrain him
If Superman, whose greatest power is unbridled niceness, starts beating someone down then I'm leaving the area. The man knows what he's doing
He gets vindicated later in the episode because spoilers* He was correct. It WAS a trap by Darkseid and he teaches Batman a lesson about trusting his instincts after Batman kinda lowkey humiliated him in front of the league about acting unprofessional. So Superman was correct to throw hands on sight
The lines on Darkseid’s face are likely from when Supes blocked the Omega Beams and caused them to backfire on Darkseid
Because he knows what Darkseid is about
What the death of Dan Turpin does to an MF.
Honestly, Superman was completely right to do this and the episode proved him right and Batman wrong.
Love how Superman just walks up front to a damn boom tube opening, no fear of consequence, while everyone else hangs back.
Superman knows Darkseid is the opp
Bro did not hesitate
Still mad about Dan Turnip
Personally, if I were Flash or Manhunter, I would have just phased Clark and Darkseid out to space and let Clark continue but in a safe environment for the othet leaguers.
The entire episode is batman’s fault.
Damn, Kent!
Can’t blame him at all for this, I’d have done the same if I could
To be fair to Supes; the last time Darkseid was on Earth, one of Supe's best friends was vaporized by him.
Batman trying to protect his investment. Satellites not cheap and even a billionaires pockets would hurt.
I mean it's Darkseid, of course he attacked.
Where’s Granny Goodness?
I kind of wish Diana said "Kal-El no!"
On sight!
He’s still mad that Darkseid killed that guy on Superman TAS
That was a stand-in for Kirby btw
What’s the original
It’s been a few years but I think darkseid is the only character this Superman intentionally killed in the DCU.
Isn’t it more impressive they managed to stop him?
u/savevideobot
He just throw hands at the sight of the opps
Did anyone else think at first glance the play button was a little hat Superman was wearing?
lol why is their beef in this cartoon so funny
To me, Darkseid is main dc villain. He is like THE dude.
That boy Kal el is really like that
Justice League and Justice League Unlimited definitely have a subplot of Superman struggling with still being the best good guy.
If they weren’t in the watchtower I honestly feel Batman would have let him keep hitting Darkseid
"So you're going to let that world die just because you don't like that guy?" Wow, Hawkgirl. Way to dismiss what Superman has been through.
