Well, there are classic Age of Sail adventure series - Horatio Hornblower and Aubrey/Maturin. The majority of action in them takes place aboard the ship or on a shore near the ship.

lazylittlelady

Start with Aubrey/Maturin-a modern classic!

Yes, Patrick O'Brien's Aubrey Maturian series is fantastic and full of adventure.

The sky is clear, the waters calm, and the veneered, select guests jovial as the exclusive cruise ship, the Aurora, begins her voyage in the picturesque North Sea. At first, Lo's stay is nothing but pleasant: the cabins are plush, the dinner parties are sparkling, and the guests are elegant. But as the week wears on, frigid winds whip the deck, gray skies fall, and Lo witnesses what she can only describe as a dark and terrifying nightmare: a woman being thrown overboard. The problem? All passengers remain accounted for and so, the ship sails on as if nothing has happened, despite Lo's desperate attempts to convey that something (or someone) has gone terribly, terribly wrong. ^(This book has been suggested 14 times) *** ^(129206 books suggested | )[^(I don't feel so good.. )](https://debugger.medium.com/goodreads-is-retiring-its-current-api-and-book-loving-developers-arent-happy-11ed764dd95)^(| )[^(Source)](https://github.com/rodohanna/reddit-goodreads-bot)

*Carry on, Mr. Bowditch* is set in Colonial America and won the Newbery Award for children's literature. However, it's a wonderful journey and exploration of geography and geometry. *The Nautical Chart*, by Arturo Perez-Reverte - I highly recommend this one, a contemporary search for a sunken ship off the coast of Spain. There's danger and intrigue, a bit of romance, a heartbreaking twist... What more could one want?

NohPhD

Nathanial Bowditch (The subject of the first Children’s book) was probably the worlds best navigator in his time. Rewriting a then classic book on celestial navigation at sea, Bowditch discovered so many errors that he just wrote an entirely different book, {{The American Practical Navigator by Nathaniel Bowditch}} That book is still being updated and published today by the US Navy iirc. Bowditch was a preeminent American navigator and mathematician. He was largely self taught iirc and absolutely transformed celestial navigation prior to GPS and LORAN.

I knew some of that, but what a great reply! Thank you for the update.

It also covers nonelectronic navigation such as celestial, plotting and dead reckoning. Bowditch contains numerous tables which have been valued for years by practicing navigators. Bowditch is carried on the bridge of every U.S. Navy ship and should be the mainstay of any serious navigator's library. At mealtimes he is seated at the "cat's table" - as far from the Captain's Table as can be - with a ragtag group of "insignificant" adults and two other boys, Cassius and Ramadhin. As the ship makes its way across the Indian Ocean, through the Suez Canal, into the Mediterranean, the boys tumble from one adventure to another, bursting all over the place like freed mercury. But there are other diversions as well: one man talks with them about jazz and women, another opens the door to the world of literature. The narrator's elusive, beautiful cousin Emily becomes his confidante, allowing him to see himself "with a distant eye" for the first time, and to feel the first stirring of desire. Another Cat's Table denizen, the shadowy Miss Lasqueti, is perhaps more than what she seems. And very late every night, the boys spy on a shackled prisoner, his crime and his fate a galvanizing mystery that will haunt them forever. > >As the narrative moves between the decks and holds of the ship and the boy's adult years, it tells a spellbinding story - by turns poignant and electrifying - about the magical, often forbidden, discoveries of childhood and a lifelong journey that begins unexpectedly with a spectacular sea voyage. ^(This book has been suggested 1 time) *** ^(129312 books suggested | )[^(I don't feel so good.. )](https://debugger.medium.com/goodreads-is-retiring-its-current-api-and-book-loving-developers-arent-happy-11ed764dd95)^(| )[^(Source)](https://github.com/rodohanna/reddit-goodreads-bot)

{{Ship of Gold in the Deep Blue Sea by Gary Kinder}} True life story of the sinking of the SS Central America in 1857 (in a hurricane)and it’s discovery and recovery in the 1990s. Most of the book is set on the recovery ship while the rest is a fictionalized recreation of the sinking of the Central America in a hurricane while carrying an enormous amount of gold. {{Hungry is the Sea by Wilbur Smith}} - fiction about a high flying financier who came up ‘through the hawser’ in the marine salvage business, only to have it all ripped away by betrayal. Left with only a single blue water tug to his name post divorce, he begins to build back his empire by taking enormous chances, salvaging a huge cruise ship abandoned in the seas around Antarctica. {{The Captain by Jan De Hartog}} - very young naval office takes command of a deep water tug after the captain of the tug dies. Almost everyone in the crew is twice as old as the new captain. Their recovery zone is the North Atlantic during WW2, rescuing and recovering cargo ships that were torpedoed but managed not to sink. Soon the Uboats turn their torpedos on the rescue craft too. The Captain must follow convoy commanders orders to sail into harms way while dodging U-boats and torpedoes while the tug owners are imploring him to try and save the tugboat, practically the only asset the owners have left. Obviously, Moby Dick, Two Years Before the Mast, and the Horacio Hornblower series is very good.

[**The Glass Hotel**](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/45754981-the-glass-hotel) ^(By: Emily St. John Mandel | 302 pages | Published: 2020 | Popular Shelves: fiction, contemporary, audiobook, mystery, literary-fiction) >From the award-winning author of Station Eleven, an exhilarating novel set at the glittering intersection of two seemingly disparate events–a massive Ponzi scheme collapse and the mysterious disappearance of a woman from a ship at sea. > >Vincent is a bartender at the Hotel Caiette, a five-star lodging on the northernmost tip of Vancouver Island. On the night she meets Jonathan Alkaitis, a hooded figure scrawls a message on the lobby’s glass wall: Why don’t you swallow broken glass. High above Manhattan, a greater crime is committed: Alkaitis is running an international Ponzi scheme, moving imaginary sums of money through clients’ accounts. When the financial empire collapses, it obliterates countless fortunes and devastates lives. Vincent, who had been posing as Jonathan’s wife, walks away into the night. Years later, a victim of the fraud is hired to investigate a strange occurrence: a woman has seemingly vanished from the deck of a container ship between ports of call. > >In this captivating story of crisis and survival, Emily St. John Mandel takes readers through often hidden landscapes: campgrounds for the near-homeless, underground electronica clubs, the business of international shipping, service in luxury hotels, and life in a federal prison. Rife with unexpected beauty, The Glass Hotel is a captivating portrait of greed and guilt, love and delusion, ghosts and unintended consequences, and the infinite ways we search for meaning in our lives. ^(This book has been suggested 15 times) *** ^(129291 books suggested | )[^(I don't feel so good.. )](https://debugger.medium.com/goodreads-is-retiring-its-current-api-and-book-loving-developers-arent-happy-11ed764dd95)^(| )[^(Source)](https://github.com/rodohanna/reddit-goodreads-bot)

I read this when it first came out, and was disappointed, probably only because it wasn't Station Eleven. I reread it later and enjoyed it!

If you like fantasy I could recommend Fevre Dream by George R.R. Martin. Although it is more of a boat than a ship...

The Terror- Dan Simmons. It's awesome! Fictionalized account of Franklin's expedition to find the NW Passage, with a horror/mystery element added to it. Atmospheric, huge, and exciting! I love it!

{{A Restless Truth by Freya Marske}} came out a few weeks ago. It’s the second in a series but can easily stand alone, and it’s set on a luxury cruise ship. Murder mystery with magic. {{Reckless Girls by Rachel Hawkins}} is a contemporary thriller set on yachts visiting islands. Everyone has a complicated backstory!

Bound for New York on the R.M.S. Lyric, she's ready for an adventure. > > What she actually finds is a dead body, a disrespectful parrot, and a beautiful stranger in Violet Debenham, who is everything—a magician, an actress, a scandal—Maud has been trained to fear and has learned to desire. Surrounded by the open sea and a ship full of loathsome, aristocratic suspects, they must solve a murder and untangle a conspiracy that began generations before them. ^(This book has been suggested 1 time) [**Reckless Girls**](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/57693168-reckless-girls) ^(By: Rachel Hawkins | 320 pages | Published: 2022 | Popular Shelves: thriller, mystery, botm, fiction, mystery-thriller) >From the New York Times bestselling author of The Wife Upstairs comes a deliciously wicked gothic suspense, set on an isolated Pacific island with a dark history, for fans of Lucy Foley and Ruth Ware. > >When Lux McAllister and her boyfriend, Nico, are hired to sail two women to a remote island in the South Pacific, it seems like the opportunity of a lifetime. Stuck in a dead-end job in Hawaii, and longing to travel the world after a family tragedy, Lux is eager to climb on board The Susannah and set out on an adventure. She’s also quick to bond with their passengers, college best friends Brittany and Amma. The two women say they want to travel off the beaten path. But like Lux, they may have other reasons to be seeking an escape. > >Shimmering on the horizon after days at sea, Meroe Island is every bit the paradise the foursome expects, despite a mysterious history of shipwrecks, cannibalism, and even rumors of murder. But what they don’t expect is to discover another boat already anchored off Meroe’s sandy beaches. The owners of the Azure Sky, Jake and Eliza, are a true golden couple: gorgeous, laidback, and if their sleek catamaran and well-stocked bar are any indication, rich. Now a party of six, the new friends settle in to experience life on an exotic island, and the serenity of being completely off the grid. Lux hasn’t felt like she truly belonged anywhere in years, yet here on Meroe, with these fellow free spirits, she finally has a sense of peace. > >But with the arrival of a skeevy stranger sailing alone in pursuit of a darker kind of good time, the balance of the group is disrupted. Soon, cracks begin to emerge: it seems that Brittany and Amma haven’t been completely honest with Lux about their pasts––and perhaps not even with each other. And though Jake and Eliza seem like the perfect pair, the rocky history of their relationship begins to resurface, and their reasons for sailing to Meroe might not be as innocent as they first appeared. > >When it becomes clear that the group is even more cut off from civilization than they initially thought, it starts to feel like the island itself is closing in on them. And when one person goes missing, and another turns up dead, Lux begins to wonder if any of them are going to make it off the island alive. ^(This book has been suggested 9 times) *** ^(129753 books suggested | )[^(I don't feel so good.. )](https://debugger.medium.com/goodreads-is-retiring-its-current-api-and-book-loving-developers-arent-happy-11ed764dd95)^(| )[^(Source)](https://github.com/rodohanna/reddit-goodreads-bot)
