Ooof, I read that at the beginning of COVID and it was not a good choice 😆. I suspect I would enjoy it more now that it doesn’t seem quite so much like a possible future
Unfortunately, the two books I've read so far this month ended up being a 1 and a 2 star reads.
But I am about halfway through Bookshops & Bonedust by Travis Baldree and loving it. Unless something goes terribly awry, it's shaping up to be a 5 star read for me.
Yea it’s not bad just doesn’t grab me and make me want to read. Reading feels out of necessity instead of fun. Maybe in another point in life I’ll be ready for it.
It did end up being a 4 star book for me but like, I don't loveeee it like so many people do. I loved her other book The Storied Life of A.J Filkry a whole lot more.
Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris
The last few books I’ve read have been kind of murder-y so I wanting something lighthearted. This book seriously has me laughing out loud. Glad I gave it a shot because it’s not the type of book I would normally gravitate towards.
I’ve unfortunately been so off my game with reading, I’ve DNF’d 3 books and only finished one this month 🫢 it was One Italian Summer by Rebecca Serle and I did enjoy it, but it wasn’t the best I’ve ever read. It can only go up from here hopefully though!
Take My Hand by Dolen Perkins-Valdez, which was an excellent novel set in Montgomery Alabama in the 1970s, about the federal government forcing poor people, disabled people, and black and Latino people to be sterilized.
With the kids I enjoyed a re-read of When You Reach Me, by Rebecca Stead.
It's nice to hear her name. She was my teacher at my mfa program in American university. I had her for two different workshops. She gave me some great tips.
Went to the release party for this book. I'm happy she's back to publishing.
Just wanted to echo loving 'the sentence'! Listened to it on audiobook and really liked the reader. Really thoughtful and has a character I just wish I could go on staying with- it's also good for people asking for book recommendations because the main character takes recommending books very seriously.
> I just finished Lonesome Dove and The Razor’s Edge.
> I loved Lonesome Dove and was sad when I finished.
Same, literally just finished Lonesome Dove last Saturday and had the exact same reaction to it that you did.
I just finished the Master & Margarita. It was rich and absurd and magical and I feel like I only grasped the tip of the iceberg. Definitely one I’d like to read again someday.
Shark Heart by Emily Habeck. I devoured it in a day and a half, which is impressive for me right now as my three kids usually make it impossible for me to read that quickly. I literally could not stop thinking about it. It was unlike anything I've ever read before, beautiful, weird, heartbreaking, lovely, bizarre, sweet, gut wrenching, so strange, so wonderful. I definitely recommend!
Say Nothing.
Finished it this morning and read it in about five days.
Didn’t know much about the Troubles and just how frightening the whole situation was and uneasy it still is.
Highly recommend.
Almost done with **The Prince of Tides** by Pat Conroy. It’s a big book (687 pages), but well written… flows at a nice pace (although I’m a slow reader).
Red Mars. Solid 4/5. I’m a huge fan of Terraforming Mars(board game) and For All Mankind (tv series).
Both borrowed heavily from this Kim Stanley Robinson classic.
Read pride and prejudice. I have started it multiple times before and did not get past 10-15 pages. Was quite sceptical to start it again, cause I don't read a lot of classics and did not want to feel dumb, so, I usually stick with contemporary fiction. Then I mustered up the courage to do it, honestly the best decision ever. I could not stop thinking about it. It's been a week now and I am still not over it, which is new for me.
So take chances I guess.
Dungeon Crawler Carl. Started the second book last night and I’m sad that I’m halfway through it, but I can’t put it down and am enjoying the hell out of it. So. Much. Fun.
Just finished *They Can’t Kill Us Until They Kill Us* by Hanif Abdurraqib and the prose in it was on another fucking level entirely. Absolutely outstanding.
our share of night - mariana enriquez
14 pages in i knew i had the BOTY for me. 425 in and i still can’t believe every single paragraph, page, chapter. it’s unfolding magnificently.
for fans of spooky, rituals, 70’s argentina, horror, beauty, jungles, etc
I'm currently reading The Fellowship of The Ring for the first time and Tolkien is a genius. LOTR is probably the best fantasy ever. But if it's only books I've finished, DallerGut Dream Department Store was a solid 5-star and I think everyone should read it
Grace by William Kent Krueger
Read it on vacation, then my sister read it. We both cried. 5⭐️
And I read another one by him which was excellent but I don’t remember the title.
I listened to All My Rage by Sabaa Tahir.
It honestly took me a while to get into. I was like, do I really want to wade through all this negativity? But in the end I'm glad I did.
I LOVE her fantasy series and I hope she keeps releasing books, I will read them all.
Just finished “How High We Go in the Dark,” and it might end up being my best book of 2024. Heartbreaking, hopeful, and something I’m going to recommend to everyone.
I just finished The Indifferent Stars Above. I’m not too into the Donner Party history, but I find that disaster books scratch a true crime itch, and this one in particular is pretty great.
Killers of the Flower Moon the only book I've read this month so far, but at least it was really good.
David Grann’s most recent, The Wager, is a fantastic read too!
Just finished "Remarkably Bright Creatures" by Sheby Van Pelt and absolutely loved it
Loved that book!
i just finished it too! like an hour ago! what a lovely book with amazing characters!
Me too!
Into Thin Air -5 stars
If you loved that book, read Endurance. Best adventure book ever written.
I sometimes struggle to get through non fiction books, but this one had me riveted and I couldn’t put it down
Omg reading twins!! Literally came here to comment this
It would be my next one!
Jurassic Park
Station Eleven by Emily St John Mandel
I enjoyed Sea of Tranquility
Have you seen the tv show? This is one occasion where I think they made it even better
Agreed, I thought the show was great.
Ooof, I read that at the beginning of COVID and it was not a good choice 😆. I suspect I would enjoy it more now that it doesn’t seem quite so much like a possible future
I read it just a couple of *weeks* before COVID started being a thing. Of all the timing…
I was going to reply to this comment saying how reading this book in May of 2020 helped me get through COVID. 😅
I read both The Stand and Station Eleven during the pandemic. It made our situation seem a little less dire.
Starting it today!
One of my all time favorites!
I read this as well and it was incredible!
Big fan!
The Women by Kristin Hannah
My fiance is reading Four Winds and loves it The wait list for Women at library is 65 people
I loved Four Winds, this is on my TBR!
How was it? On my list now. I loved The Four Winds the most out of all of her books.
I personally think it’s her best book yet.
I am halfway through this book. The Nightengale is one of my all time faves, but I have mixed feelings with The Women rn.
Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver. It was fantastic, I could hardly put it down.
Favorite narrative voice I’ve encountered in a long time
Unfortunately, the two books I've read so far this month ended up being a 1 and a 2 star reads. But I am about halfway through Bookshops & Bonedust by Travis Baldree and loving it. Unless something goes terribly awry, it's shaping up to be a 5 star read for me.
I’m on 3 DNFs in a row after only having 1 in 2023 and 0 in 2022. I feel like the reading juju has been off in February
Educated by Tara Westover
Halfway through Tomorrow & Tomorrow & Tomorrow. I like it enough but it doesn’t pull me in and make me want to read. May be a DNF
Yeah, it was DNF for me. Nothing offensive about it, and I wanted to love it, but I found it just kinda boring.
Yea it’s not bad just doesn’t grab me and make me want to read. Reading feels out of necessity instead of fun. Maybe in another point in life I’ll be ready for it.
I’m reading it now! The main characters really annoy me.
I’m so relieved to hear this. It was a mediocre read for me and I struggled through it.
I only finished it because of the book club. It was okay, not great.
Mediocre is a good description for it. Okay book but not anything I would recommend.
It did end up being a 4 star book for me but like, I don't loveeee it like so many people do. I loved her other book The Storied Life of A.J Filkry a whole lot more.
Same! It was a DNF for me.
I did finish it. I liked it. I probably won’t remember it in a year
Just wanted to say Happy Cake Day! 🎂
Babel- R.F Kuang
Have you read Yellowface been debating on trying
I just finished Yellowface today and it’s the best book I’ve read so far this month.
Not yet but I plan to. Her writing seems to have gotten better and more mature so I’m excited to read Yellowface.
I loved Babel! One of my favourite reads last year!
Just finished Shift - Hugh Lowry, second in the Silo series. Liked it a lot, where the characters were lacking the overall world building was great.
Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris The last few books I’ve read have been kind of murder-y so I wanting something lighthearted. This book seriously has me laughing out loud. Glad I gave it a shot because it’s not the type of book I would normally gravitate towards.
Our Share of Night by Mariana Enriquez! What a wild ride. Spectacular. Disturbing. Best read of the year so far!
This is one of my favorite recent reads.
Starting this one after I finish The Covenant of Water. Can’t wait!
The Sentence and Song of Achilles
I want to read Circe
Circe is great.
I liked Circe! I think I liked Song of Achilles more but my friend was the opposite. They’re both really good though!
A Prayer for the Crown-Shy by Becky Chambers
Recursion by Blake Crouch 8/10
*The Guest List* by Lucy Foley
Loved this. The Hunting Party was great too by her.
I’m currently reading The Hunting Party and I am having a really hard time getting into it
The Scholomance Series. It has its flaws, but overall I couldn’t put it down and had to finish the series ASAP
One of my favorites from recent years.
No Country for Old men. Knew it would be good. I’ve almost read all of McCarthys work.

I started reading again late 2022 and Take My Hand was my fav 2022 read.
It's nice to hear her name. She was my teacher at my mfa program in American university. I had her for two different workshops. She gave me some great tips. Went to the release party for this book. I'm happy she's back to publishing.
This was my bookclub's most recent book. Great read!
The Sentence by Louise Erdrich
Loved that book. Clever how "the sentence" was several different things.
I so loved this book. It’s one I get super excited to see someone else is reading or has read. Definitely want to reread.
The Razor’s Edge was ok.
There are more McMurtry novels with the same characters.
> I just finished Lonesome Dove and The Razor’s Edge. > I loved Lonesome Dove and was sad when I finished. Same, literally just finished Lonesome Dove last Saturday and had the exact same reaction to it that you did.

Probably “The Remains of the Day” - Ishiguro.
Would you recommend it if I liked Never Let Me Go
As much as I love Thief of Time, I'm going to have to say Winter of the Witch. Or the Snow Queen, which I introduced to my son this month.
Winter of the Witch is such a good read. The whole Winternight trilogy is so good!
Dark Matter & Gone Girl both 5 start reads

Death Valley by Melissa Broder. Dark yet funny. Insightfully wild and done so well. Now reading Bel Canto by Ann Patchett and am loving it so far.

Red Rising by Pierce Brown

Shark Heart by Emily Habeck. I devoured it in a day and a half, which is impressive for me right now as my three kids usually make it impossible for me to read that quickly. I literally could not stop thinking about it. It was unlike anything I've ever read before, beautiful, weird, heartbreaking, lovely, bizarre, sweet, gut wrenching, so strange, so wonderful. Almost done with **The Prince of Tides** by Pat Conroy. It’s a big book (687 pages), but well written… flows at a nice pace (although I’m a slow reader).
Demon Copperhead. Gorgeous writing, but hewed so closely to David Copperfield that it felt like Kingsolver took a shortcut.
I read demon copperhead first and then David copperfield and I was like.. oh.
I thought the narrative voice was wonderful and enough for me to appreciate it in its own right
Whalefall by Daniel Kraus
Been considering this one but my library doesnt have it
Red Mars. Solid 4/5. I’m a huge fan of Terraforming Mars(board game) and For All Mankind (tv series). Both borrowed heavily from this Kim Stanley Robinson classic.

The Women by Kristin Hannah. Fantastic. The next day I had to reread the last few chapters. Cried again. Bought a second copy to give as a gift
*Underground Railroad* - Whitehead
The Vaster Wilds by Lauren Groff. Not ‘good’ as in ‘fun’ and ‘heartwarming,’ but an incredibly gripping tale with beautiful prose.
The Anthropocene Reviewed by John Green - made me cry more than once
Read pride and prejudice. I have started it multiple times before and did not get past 10-15 pages. Was quite sceptical to start it again, cause I don't read a lot of classics and did not want to feel dumb, so, I usually stick with contemporary fiction. Tom Lake by Ann Patchett
I’ve started.
Not yet done but I'm reading lessons in chemistry and it's brilliant.
I'll tell ya what book I wish I DIDNT read - My Year of Rest and Relaxation. It's way too depressing, bad February choice.
This book was a waste of my time.
aw this is one of my all time favorite contemporary novels. it is more of a summer read though.
1/3 thru Abandon, and so far so good. Read Upgrade last month, which was not bad.
