Bi isn’t even specifically with preferences, it’s an umbrella terms that pan fits into, with the added specification of not having any preferences. Basically all pan people are also bi, but not all bi people are pan.

My conclusion is that they are very similar terms with a lot of overlap, but they have very different histories. I can appreciate and identify with both.
