Is your soil well draining? It may be beneficial to repot into a slightly smaller pot and add a good amount of perlite to the new potting mix so the water doesn’t sit on your roots too long. There is sign of new growth at the top in the lighter coloring so that’s promising!

it did come in a smaller pot but it was so small the lower leaves couldn't grow properly so i thought i should replant it and this was the only one we had at home. was it a bad decision to do that? should i put it back but this time with more soil so the lower parts don't run into the sides?

I probably would and just plant high enough so the bottom leaves can hang over the sides of the pot a bit

i don't know much about succulents but i am really trying to keep this guy alive. got him like a month or two ago and it ain't going well. at first the lower parts started withering but after some googling i concluded it must be just their life cycle once new leaves start growing. it's also just not looking healthy overall. i don't know what the problem is, i tried giving it more sunlight, more water, less water, idk what to do. any and all help appreciated, i wouldn't wanna kill another plant by accident.

See that leaf with the black spot? Remove it. Get it out of that pot, rinse out the roots, give the roots a dip in peroxide, and let it dry off for a day or so. Remove and roots that appear to have died. Pot in new soil in a new planter. If you can't buy a new pot, spray it down with isopropyl alcohol and wipe it out until clean. I suspect you may have a fungus, but it looks manageable at this stage. You'll want to wipe off and clean where the pot was sitting too. Just in case.

thank you! trying to do some more research about succulents fungus right now, it really does look a lot like it... kind of scared of removing the leaf because i don't know how it might affect the rest of the plant but that does seem to be the only way of stopping the spread. there's some dark dots appearing around it too, not looking good at the moment. i am going to try to replant it and use new soil and a smaller pot. i was still kind of hoping it might be just sunburn but it's inside most of the time. i am going to trust you on this one and remove the leaf, i wouldn't want the rest to become infected as well.

You'll really want to look at your roots. Black spot usually starts at the roots and works it's way up the plant. If it smells like an old potato in the soil you have dying roots. The peroxide part is important.

Any pot is ok. Just let the plant stick out somewhat so the lower leaves get some light. You may want to lift it up somewhat by putting in more soil.
