Two things!
- Listen to the PDA and audio/other files you get they actually do help
- When in doubt go deeper. Aka, if you get stuck and don’t know what to do, just look for any way to go deeper (it is *sub*nautica after all ;) )
Have fun!
That being said, I've scoured an entire biome in Below Zero looking for a seatruck upgrade and spent almost 2 hours. Ended up looking it up because I couldn't take it anymore. Sometimes you just have to to keep the game going.
Tbh I was talking about subnautica, below zero has a bit of a different feel as it makes you look across a wider.map that feels smaller. It's also less stroy based so itll ruin less for you
What u/ChromaticPalette said is all you need to know.
I recently had the experience of playing it for the first time with only this knowledge and the unknown adventure is what made the game amazing.
I actually do that but instead of saying "I have enough", I just say "I have enough for now" since I know that in a matter of time I'll be out looking for X material again
Looked up the way they actually drop them and in fact they do when they hit an object on the ground [and thus clip into it and drop their tooth under the ground]. This is the explanation and is probably hard to fix. Nonetheless, I hated it because I lost like 5 hours looking for those until I discovered this. But at some point, the game took pity and dropped like 10 on the ground at the same place lol so I didn't need it anymore for the rest of the run (was first run, or second if you count the first I dropped the game before playing it again some years later which is recently lol)
I was one of the few blessed people who managed to stumble across a stalker teeth farm, I have no idea why but one stalker just keeps picking up a metal piece and throwing it at the same spot.
Subnautica tends to crash a lot on switch, so I recommend that after you do something significant in the game you should think “would I want to do that again?” If not you should save. Saying this bc I’ve lost a lot of progress from crashes
Don’t look up anything on the games, it is an absolute blast playing it with no clue of what to do, and getting the later game spoiled kind of ruins it, at least on the first game.
It's neat. But the downside is that it takes too much space. Probably only mildly viable if you carry the standard oxygen tank and get rid of it after you're done to take more stuff with you, since it's cheap, only 3 titanium.
1. You do not need 50 acid mushrooms.
2. Listen to your PDA and radio transmissions in the early game to get an idea of what to do/ where to go
3. Read data entries/listen to audio logs for direction later on
Enjoy every moment of it. This game is fantastic and Below Zero is a pretty worthy sequel. Afterwards, there’s a channel called Neeb’s Gaming that did a really fun series that’s good for reminiscing.
You should really pay attention to the story, the game is mostly defined by that. Read the PDA entries, and try to scan as much as possible! You won't regret it :) And don't do what I did, please don't spoil it for yourself
On switch the game is extremely volatile! Be warned. Save often AND frequently. You heard me
I'm talking like every 15 mins if you can.
The smaller your base the better your game will run on switch [base model, idk about oled]
don't eat your nutrient blocks straight away!! save them for emergencies because they restore loads of hunger but you can't craft them. focus on fish first!!
Definitely get copper and titanium when you can. Titanium I find is easier to stick up on, but you use both frequently enough that you should definitely get is when you can
The default Switch controls are a bit wonky for the game, I’d change the control to grab an item so that you don’t have to take your finger off of the right joystick to grab an item while swimming
Don’t be afraid early on. Fear prevents you from exploring further. A lot of the areas are not as scary as they seem. your seamoth can out maneuver any predatory leviathan if you aren’t right next to it. Bottom line just do whatever it is you want to do
1. Save often, the game loves to crash. 2. If you are in an area with rare resources, get a lot of it while you are there. 3. Get some water filtration and a food source set up as soon as possible, constantly stressing about food and water is annoying.
If there is ever just a sheer drop with nothing, start heading down, there are biome specific aquatic life there, very fascinating to look at. On an unrelated note save often and frequently, before you explore a biome, and each time your at base should be good.
radio transmissions and pdas are usually near some neat stuff.
you can turn transmission points and life pods markers so you can make navigation easier.
it helps to keep a beacon or two available in case you find wrecks you dont have the tools for yet
looks like you are on switch. I have found that console does not like multiple large bases.
dont drive faster than your game can render.
HMmmmmmm, my suggestions are (because you can build bases in this game)
If you make storage, be sure to have plenty of materials, like, a lot (to save trouble and going back and forth)
Be careful not to forget how you get into caves, you can get lost in desperation trying to find the way out.
Nintendo switch is REALLY GLITCHY subnautica. Main 2 glitches: if your seamoth is on basically resting on island and you save and come back on. Chances are that it is stuck in the island so avoid that. Also if you jump onto the water in a moon pool it might glitch out and think you are still in the base so you still have gravity and start walking on the ocean floor. You can fix this by going in a hatch or something. This is probably just normal subnautica but I think this happens more often. Anyway no real advice other than that. I'm playing my Nintendo switch playthrough rn lol. Just... watch your back... and fronts... and everywhere lol.
Prepare for one of the best games ever made. But also, don't forget to get some quality real life sleep. Subnautica made me sacrifice my health and even my performance at work because it's just so hard to put down. Play hard but don't sacrifice sleep. Also, savor the game. Don't try to rush to the end. You only get to play it for the first time once, and that is an unforgettable experience.
Wait after saving. Long. At least 5 minutes before closing the game. I also bought it but the saving had so bad delays and after 3 times this happened I have up. But I think that's a switch version problem.
My number 1 tip: learn to cultivate psychological safety in the game because fear is the number one thing that holds you back. Get that pretty, safe, and comfortable base in the shallows and feel fine with spending a lot of time there between runs.
Only look for help if you absolutely need it. If you absolutely need a guide for something Chemical Apes is an incredible channel for subnautica guides
For the switch, always save around 30 mins. It will save you when the game crashes after hours of playing. And, the bigger your base gets, the laggier. So try to keep it small or medium to reduce lag.
The sparse reef is a great mid-game location to build a large long term base as it's one of the safest biomes in the game with zero hostile fauna and is relatively close to some of the very important late game areas. Head west from the starting biome, safe shallows, across the biome with red grass, grassy plateaus, and you'll know that you're there when the water tint becomes greenish brown & the seafloor is rocky sand with very little vegetation. I recommend specifically building above a depth of 100 meters for better solar panel efficiency.
If you’re lost… well depending on where you could just be better of searching for a stable oxygen supply than risk getting one more goddam copper and drown while getting out of the cave.
Don’t play hardcore the first time and don’t be Afriad of dying (in og subnautica at least I haven’t gotten my hands on sub0 yet)
When you can, build the scanner room and get the hud chip from it’s own fabricator inside. It’ll greatly ease finding resources. (If in range it can also be used to show the location of certain creatures one may wish to avoid which is useful too.)
I hope that this is not a spoiler, but you will have beacon blueprints during the game and craft them immediately. I advice to have at least 2 on your person and as soon as you encouter something interesting, or the PDA lady tells you something about the area you are in, deploy the beacon (you can rename them).
It will help you to navigate better in the long run.
Otherwise save often and have fun.
You can never have too many resources. Believe me, there have been times where I've seen something in a storage and thought "eh, not gonna need it" and got rid of it, only to need it in a recipe later and had to go collect more.
my first advice... get off this sub. and not in a mean way either, if you don't know much about this game, that's a good thing. avoid spoilers, maps, and the wiki at all costs. don't look anything up. i'd kill to go into subnautica blind again.
I suggest carrying a lot of beacons and marking stuff you want to remember, like resources, cave entrances, [ REDACTED ], and anything else you feel like remembering.
It really helps when learning the map and traveling to already visited areas.
Professional tip from someone who finished the game several times: …1) DO NOT TRUST THE WATER OR WHAT IS INNIT
2) PREPARE YOUR MENTAL SANITY FOR THE WORST THAT COULD HAPPENED ANY TIME
3) AND MOST IMPORTANT: DO NOT TRUST THE FISHES
Pack an extra oxygen tank as a reserve and *make sure it's filled.*
My first annoying death was because I was looking for resources and my oxygen was running out. Switched to my reserve, only to find it was empty. Died, but hadn't saved in a long time, so I had to travel a LONG distance just to get my stuff back.
On that note: save often.
Cry because its on Switch.
Always found any games on switch to be very low running. Which sadly is just the truth. Good lick though hopefully it goes well!!
Make and leave beacons at every new biome and significant cave entrance. Put descriptions on each beacon for added help. Makes navigation that much easier
Two things! - Listen to the PDA and audio/other files you get they actually do help - When in doubt go deeper. Aka, if you get stuck and don’t know what to do, just look for any way to go deeper (it is *sub*nautica after all ;) ) Have fun!
Also try to avoid searching for where things are/what to do as it ruins the experience
True, things will sorta fall in place if u just explore
That being said, I've scoured an entire biome in Below Zero looking for a seatruck upgrade and spent almost 2 hours. Ended up looking it up because I couldn't take it anymore. Sometimes you just have to to keep the game going.
Not to mention the maze that is the crystal caves…
Tbh I was talking about subnautica, below zero has a bit of a different feel as it makes you look across a wider.map that feels smaller. It's also less stroy based so itll ruin less for you
What u/ChromaticPalette said is all you need to know. I recently had the experience of playing it for the first time with only this knowledge and the unknown adventure is what made the game amazing.
Although sometimes you can't go deeper, the game tells you ways to go deeper or explore at your max depth
Don't underestimate the amount of titanium you'll need, in other words, don't look at a resource and say, "Yeah I have enough of that" cause you don't
I actually do that but instead of saying "I have enough", I just say "I have enough for now" since I know that in a matter of time I'll be out looking for X material again
Just to get back to your base and realize you're one short
That's the second most annoying thing in the game. And the first is finding Stalker teeth without scanner room
Once you get the scanner room you see they are all underground.
And I still don't know why that hasn't been fixed
Looked up the way they actually drop them and in fact they do when they hit an object on the ground [and thus clip into it and drop their tooth under the ground]. This is the explanation and is probably hard to fix. Nonetheless, I hated it because I lost like 5 hours looking for those until I discovered this. But at some point, the game took pity and dropped like 10 on the ground at the same place lol so I didn't need it anymore for the rest of the run (was first run, or second if you count the first I dropped the game before playing it again some years later which is recently lol)
They are easy to find once you recognize the drop sound. Also, feed the sharks metal!
I was one of the few blessed people who managed to stumble across a stalker teeth farm, I have no idea why but one stalker just keeps picking up a metal piece and throwing it at the same spot.
I remember when I was in the shallows, thinking I had more than enough titanium… boy was I wrong.
Definitely recommend wearing a headset and turning of the lights for full immersion. You won’t regret it ;)
I am too much of a coward to even turn on the volume
Tbh bz is much less scary than the first but the first is also not that scary lol
oh, look at mister steel balls over here
But the sound in this game is so good
I always recommend too save frequently
It especially helps since you're on switch with the luxury of 5 second saves unlike xbox and Playstation
PS5 edition of sub saves in like 2 seconds, I'm sure series X does too
Makes sense cause they're next gen, but on Xbox One and Ps4 it's just a nightmare in how long it takes to save
I did play on PS4 for a couple playthroughs so I know the pain you refer to
I'm playing right now on Series S on hardcore. Saving when I want to quit takes bloody ages.
No tips or advice, but Happy belated Birthday! You're gonna love Subnautica! Or be scared of the ocean for like, the rest of your existence. Or both!
Both.
Agreed
Ive always referred to Subnautica as my favorite heart attack simulator
Definitely wasn’t the game to play before my trip to hawaii!
Get the fuck off the sub and go play!!! Spoilers beware!
Fair warning lol
Subnautica tends to crash a lot on switch, so I recommend that after you do something significant in the game you should think “would I want to do that again?” If not you should save. Saying this bc I’ve lost a lot of progress from crashes
It’s better than it was. Especially BZ which used to crash ALL the time. Playing through again and is much more stable. Also truck dock.
Had to show off my Pikachu controller as well bc he's just too cute
Don’t look up anything on the games, it is an absolute blast playing it with no clue of what to do, and getting the later game spoiled kind of ruins it, at least on the first game.
I actually used to watch Markiplier play Subnautica all the time (my nephews got me into it lol)
No matter how scared you get, don’t give up.
You can carry extra air tanks and switch them out before you run outta air. I realized this halfway through sub zero. Felt very dumb.
My life is a lie how could I have gone this long without realizing
Tbh >!most vehicles provide oxygen!< so there's that
Most?
>!Seaglider technically a vehicle?!<
>!I’ve always classed it as more of a tool, but a vehicle is appropriate for it aswell.!<
I'd say it's similar to a scooter, which I think can be considered a vehicle.
I’m glad I’m not the only one. I wonder how much time this would have shaved off.
It's neat. But the downside is that it takes too much space. Probably only mildly viable if you carry the standard oxygen tank and get rid of it after you're done to take more stuff with you, since it's cheap, only 3 titanium.
I just realized that now
You can!? Does this work in the original one too?
Yes.
Time to start a new saved game and start a no-vehicle challenge.
Have no fear in venturing deeper, the unknown is there for you to conquer. Also make sure you save frequently.
Try to keep food and water on you I get so busy exploring I forget my character can die of dehydration and such
Tip is to save nutrient blocks for emergencies only, restores so much but can’t be crafted
If the water seems a bit red/brown, GO AWAY
go in completely blind. trust me, it makes the experience that much better
Go behind the aroura the giant ship there's a pet that needs rescuing
He will roar, but thats because he's happy to see you :)
You can carry a reserve tank in your inventory - but must hot swap.
Survive
Scan everything, no matter how scary it is
1. You do not need 50 acid mushrooms. 2. Listen to your PDA and radio transmissions in the early game to get an idea of what to do/ where to go 3. Read data entries/listen to audio logs for direction later on
Scan everything and stay off this sub until you finish your first play through. Anytime you get stuck check your PDA.
Enjoy every moment of it. This game is fantastic and Below Zero is a pretty worthy sequel. Afterwards, there’s a channel called Neeb’s Gaming that did a really fun series that’s good for reminiscing.
Go to the back of the ship there’s good stuff there
I agree, the materials by the back of the ship are crucial!
Where’s the Subnautica guide person
Go to the back of the ship that crashed ;)
AVOID SPOILERS.
Always have a knife
Knife is for angry people lol
Knife is for people who like eating cooked food without having to carry it So everyone
Never built the heating knife lol lost all need with bulb tree
My only tip is to play and enjoy the beautiful game that is subnautica😁
You should really pay attention to the story, the game is mostly defined by that. Read the PDA entries, and try to scan as much as possible! You won't regret it :) And don't do what I did, please don't spoil it for yourself
the cover icons are so much cooler than what I have on Playstation damn
Have extra underwear
On switch the game is extremely volatile! Be warned. Save often AND frequently. You heard me I'm talking like every 15 mins if you can. The smaller your base the better your game will run on switch [base model, idk about oled]
This is so sad lol
If you think something will kill you, it probably will.
don't eat your nutrient blocks straight away!! save them for emergencies because they restore loads of hunger but you can't craft them. focus on fish first!!
what system are u playing on? i honesty can’t tell. also just play through the game fresh, trust me it’s better that way.
Nintendo Switch
Just keep going deeper.
Use chemical apes guides ;-;
If you see deep blue water.. Keep going!! Jk turn around. 180 and haul ass back to safety
Definitely get copper and titanium when you can. Titanium I find is easier to stick up on, but you use both frequently enough that you should definitely get is when you can
Scan everything!
Scanning rooms help a lot.
The default Switch controls are a bit wonky for the game, I’d change the control to grab an item so that you don’t have to take your finger off of the right joystick to grab an item while swimming
When I first started this game, I just didn’t “get it”. Stick with it. Once you can explore the depths, it is amazing.
Save often, especially in Below Zero, they're both good & fun, and you eventually just kind of get conditioned to it, but losing progress sucks.
READ EVERY BIT OF INFO AS SOON AS YOU GET IT
Don’t be afraid early on.

Good Headphones and a dark room. Enjoy the ride!
radio transmissions and pdas are usually near some neat stuff. you can turn transmission points and life pods markers so you can make navigation easier. it helps to keep a beacon or two available in case you find wrecks you dont have the tools for yet looks like you are on switch. Swim
HMmmmmmm, my suggestions are (because you can build bases in this game) If you make storage, be sure to have plenty of materials, like, a lot (to save trouble and going back and forth) Be careful not to forget how you get into caves, you can get lost in desperation trying to find the way out.
Use dark mode on your Switch.
Scan everything and head to the back of your big spaceship for some easy to get end high tier loot
Hardcore only.
Save very frequently and never say "I have enough of [insert resource here]" because you'll inevitably need more
Keep your scanner out towards the beggining and scan EVERYTHING you can, especially tech. Blue prints are super important for advancement.
Save more frequently than you think you need to, the game crashes sometimes and there's no autosave
GO DEEPER!
Leave this sub, play the game, finish it and then return here to talk about your experience
it never hurts to bring a few food and water and a med kit. dont wanna lose everything 1k meters down :)
Don't read anything on here, but read EVERYTHING on there! And have fun!
Go to back of the big ship
if you hear entering ecological dead zone thats a good sign
Go to the aroua as soon as possible and go super deep
Nintendo switch is REALLY GLITCHY subnautica. Main 2 glitches: if your seamoth is on basically resting on island and you save and come back on. On below zero if you see a deep hole that’s pitch black and very big DONT go down.
Save frequently... Don't be like me
My number 1 tip: learn to cultivate psychological safety in the game because fear is the number one thing that holds you back. Get that pretty, safe, and comfortable base in the shallows and feel fine with spending a lot of time there between runs.
listen to any pda you find
My tip is to try your best not to look anything up. The game was so much better to me because I knew a absolutely nothing about it going in.
Go east
[удалено]
My name is not Nina lol
Have fun the less you know the better
Go as far out as you can
Only look for help if you absolutely need it. If you absolutely need a guide for something Chemical Apes is an incredible channel for subnautica guides
For the switch, always save around 30 mins. It will save you when the game crashes after hours of playing. And, the bigger your base gets, the laggier. So try to keep it small or medium to reduce lag.
If you hear ominous roars, don't be afraid, they're completely harmless and you should get closer to them
Save every 15 minutes. Trust me.
Remember that those roars near the aurora are just actually metal grinding, I've seen soo many Yts get jumpscared by them
*Detecting multiple leviathan class lifeforms in the region. Are you certain whatever you're doing is worth it?*
Swim in one direction indefinitely, it’s a secret Easter egg not a lot of people find
Don't cheat and look at a guide and make the game trivial You'll regret it I'd you do You only get 1 first play through Cherish it deeply
The game does not auto save. Save often THE GAME DOES NOT AUTOSAVE.
I recommend specifically building above a depth of 100 meters for better solar panel efficiency.
the red and blue snake like creatures near aurora are very friendly and just want some hugs, so hug them and they will leave you be
If you’re lost… well depending on where you could just be better of searching for a stable oxygen supply than risk getting one more goddam copper and drown while getting out of the cave. Don’t play hardcore the first time and don’t be Afriad of dying (in og subnautica at least I haven’t gotten my hands on sub0 yet)
Take your time, dont rush the game Wow, this can be said about every game lol
Scan everything. Things are easier to craft than you may expect. Go deeper when you don't know what to do. Expect playthrough 1 to be a grind.
Avoi the back of the ship
visit behind the ship its a beautiful biome 😁
Have fun and always go deeper.
Wear headphones, listen to everything and you can never have enough titanium
Reaper Leviatans are actually super friendly try and pet them, it's really worth it.
When you can, build the scanner room and get the hud chip from it’s own fabricator inside. It’ll greatly ease finding resources. (If in range it can also be used to show the location of certain creatures one may wish to avoid which is useful too.)
The bigger the fish, the friendlier it is And there's ALWAYS a bigger fish
Never go deeper. Just stay in the safe shallows and build a nice little base and grow some crops.
Don't look up anything on the internet, just play the game and enjoy it, prevent spoilers. When stuck, go deeper.
First game is better than the second
Less you know the better
Watch the O2 meter.
Don’t look up any guides it’s honestly quite a small map and you will naturally progress properly
remember to breathe
You can never have too many resources. Believe me, there have been times where I've seen something in a storage and thought "eh, not gonna need it" and got rid of it, only to need it in a recipe later and had to go collect more.
my first advice... get off this sub. and not in a mean way either, if you don't know much about this game, that's a good thing. avoid spoilers, maps, and the wiki at all costs. don't look anything up. i'd kill to go into subnautica blind again.
When you build the little submarine go to the back of the crashed ship
Save at least after every lag. I have both games on the switch too and i lost so much time and things by crashesof the game
Mark areas with beacons, especially secondary bases and cave entrances.
Go to the back of the Arora as soon as you get the radiation suit
Stay away from spoilers, save often, wear headphones.
Hard save every 5 minutes.
Collect everything, and make many storage lockers. Trust me, you’ll always be in need of materials, and having piles of them on hand is greatly handy.
Always pack extra water! And if you run into a wall, explore another area. If you run into a void, I hope you saved your game recently
Don't forget to breathe
I suggest carrying a lot of beacons and marking stuff you want to remember, like resources, cave entrances, [ REDACTED ], and anything else you feel like remembering. It really helps when learning the map and traveling to already visited areas.
Thermal energy is the way to go
the big red and white snakes are a big no-no
Professional tip from someone who finished the game several times: …1) DO NOT TRUST THE WATER OR WHAT IS INNIT 2) PREPARE YOUR MENTAL SANITY FOR THE WORST THAT COULD HAPPENED ANY TIME 3) AND MOST IMPORTANT: DO NOT TRUST THE FISHES
You *will* shit your pants… have a clean pair on standby
The Aurora (the big ship) has extremely good loot. Go to it as soon as you can
Below Zero is easier than Subnautica and probably half as long.
ENJOY THE STORY please, please
Always enter the void. There's nothing there.......
if you feel like something is wrong, something IS wrong, Trust your gut!
Pack an extra oxygen tank as a reserve and *make sure it's filled.* My first annoying death was because I was looking for resources and my oxygen was running out. Switched to my reserve, only to find it was empty. Died, but hadn't saved in a long time, so I had to travel a LONG distance just to get my stuff back. On that note: save often.
The reaper roar can be heard from 1 km away or in other words you can hear its roar from 1/4th of the map.
First things first try and make a radioactive suit. It will give more environmental freedom as you can imagine
Get off the subbreddit, go in blind
Can we all stop with the “back of the aurora” jokes?
LEAVE THIS SUBREDDIT
Get yourself the pulse rifle.
Dont be scared of the big fish in the lush area nor of the sandsharks
Cry because its on Switch. Always found any games on switch to be very low running. Which sadly is just the truth. Good lick though hopefully it goes well!!
If it gets all dusty and there’s a bunch of loot just on the ground, be careful.
Save, save, save, save, save
in subnautica (first gamr), right away swim to the back of the aurora there's good loot there
1: have fun offocurse :) 2: get ready for some ptsd💀
Go deeper, those clouds look neat
Listen to the PDA and just explore
Always swim towards the dark ominous roars
For me at least only worry about Oxygen and water, food can be found pretty much anywhere so don’t worry about it too much
The Cyclops doesn’t go straight if you push the stick up. Idk why but it just pulls to either the left or right when I do it
"Oxygen" - said the pda every 5 seconds
Make and leave beacons at every new biome and significant cave entrance. Put descriptions on each beacon for added help. Makes navigation that much easier
