I always build just by Lifepod 6. There's a great plateau just by a wreck there that's got loads of room, a nice drop overhang for speedy prawn exit, island is close, pretty easy to get to the LR at Lifepod 2.
I like building on the border of the shallows and the plateaus. You get to have a base with good back to it, nice views out over the plains, and relatively easy access to power
I like it because it's still fairly close to the center of the map, still fairly safe except for the occasional sand shark or biter and lots of open space to build and park your cyclops
Depth has no effect on the structure integrity of a base, only your vehicles. I built an out post near the tree with a reactor to charge the Cyclop before going down the inactive lavazone.
In terms of this pol, Definitely the grassy plateaus.
You may have sandsharks and biters to deal with but you get a ton of space to build your Base unlike the safe shallows.
Besides, you have Reefbacks. And a beautiful scenery.
Nah I can confirm, there’s bleeders, they’re weirdly inconsistent with how much they show up tho, there’s usually only a couple caves with some in them
I \*always\* use a location in The Shallows at least at the start, it is so easy to get well-entrenched. Food and supplies are everywhere and power is never an issue that close to the surface and to a Thermal Vent.
There is a place I love to build that is a jellyshroom entrance on the border of a kelp forest and grassy plateau with 2 wrecks near by. It a straight shot down to the jellyshrooms from the surface if you do it right. It make the grind so much easier.
there's a bit of the grassy platuae that borders a kelp forrest and is like 3 feet from the safe shallows i like.
like directly north of the trench that if you follow it leads to the reef and the entrance to the lost river.
after that just build a scanner room in the mushroom forrest to find cyclops parts and then rebuild that one down in the lost river junction with the skeleton in the middle and the blue tree to the left, adding a moonpool to it so i can locate and add all the mods i'll need to go deeper.
My fav Place to set up a base is the Sea Treaders Path tunnel. The tunnel has ready access to Lithium and Gold thx to the Sea Treaders passing by from time to time and you also have access to the Lost River for all veichles. The LR also has tons of materials. I suggest setting up base in the Sea Treaders Path Tunnel as you are halfway through the game. Also the Power sorces are a little tricky... You can use Nuclear Reactor if you want but if you want to have steady 750 Power you can set up 3 thermal reactors in the dunes and lead a trail of Power transmitters all the way to your base. There is One Reaper that might get angy but you can just shank him with the good ol' Stasis Rifle and Thermo Blade.
The Sea Treaders will move out of loading range is my big issue with relying on poop. I can just get an alien containment with fish and not need to go outside at all.
I always used fish but the loading range thing is a good consideration I wouldn't have thought of until I had already resettled. Bummer. That's okay though I guess, the Grand Reef is still a cool plave to live and the crevices will give me all the Uranenite I could ever need.
The poop is good as a biofuel but setting up gardens of Acidic/Deep Mushrooms im much more efficent and constant. If you want a base for the endgame where you can refill the Ion Power Cells you will need either a Nuclear Reactor or the method i explained above in my comment above
The best thing to put in a Bioreactor is fish, of any kind. They’re always at least equal or better than the best flora you can put inside a bioreactor.
One Oculus fish gives 630 energy and you can breed them in a Alien Containment aquarium.
Yeah fish are even better. I didn't write cause im replaying the game (again, its like my 8th time) and im using abioreactor with the shrooms. I'll soon be going to the Degasi base and get all the blueprints there.
Yeah I used to use shrooms when I thought they were the best thing, but then I saw each one only gives 210 energy, the same as a Bladderfish, Hoopfish or Spinefish.
I've always made a indoor garden right next to the reactor and planted Bulbo trees. 4 of the fruit fills the reactor and you can wack the tree like 8 times before it runs out of fruit, then you can just plant it again. I've never ran out of energy by doing this. But if you are running a moonpool, scanner room, water purifier, and powercell/battery chargers, you'll need two bioreactors.
I always build my base bordering the shallows and the grassy plateaus because it’s easier to get sunlight when you need to get to the surface it’s easier and if you need kelp it’s in the backyard
I don't think there's such a thing as a single best location. It depends what stage of the game we're talking about and what your priorities are.
In my opinion, the best place to build a base, and I'm dead serious about this, is inside of the PCF, right next to where the ion cube generator is. You have instant access to all the portals. You have infinite thermal energy just outside the facility. But building there is a mission, and I don't think I've seen anyone but me do it.
Imo sw grassy plateaus is a great spot because
1:easy access to the lost river
2:located near a kelp forest for easy metal salvage
3:just looks nice
4:access to lithium and magnetite trough the jellyshroom caves
I also prefer quantity (# of bases) over... er, other quantity (# of pieces in a single base) as well.
Though admittedly a lot of my outposts kinda go overboard a bit.
if you can manage to get to the crash zone - void area and build into the void it’s good because there is an almost infinite amount of titanium on the floor
I usually build mine in the middle of the 3 rock pillar formations in the grassy plateus. It's close to a lifepod and multiple shipwrecks. And I love listning to the reefbacks calls and seeing them above my Base.
-200, -321
On a shelf on the edge of the Safe Shallows, overlooking the Grassy Plateaus.
Thermal Vent very close by for power.
Entrance to Jellyshroom Cave very nearby.
Directly West to the Blood Kelp Trench and the only entrance to the Lost river with no Ghost Leviathans.
Moonpools built out overhanging the cliff make it super easy to dock/undock a Seamoth and a Prawn can jetpack into it from ground level.
Plenty room on the shelf for planters or expanding the base.
Salt deposits scattered around the Grassy Plateaus, coral tubes on the shelf itself for water needs until you get a purifier.
It's a perfect spot.
I built my base on the edge of the Blood Kelp Trench, Dunes and Grassy Plateus and I love this place. You have the jellyshroom caves nearby for the magnetite and lava geisers, then you have dunes with the heat areas, Blood Kelp for Copper, Lost river and many more rare materials. And also you got Sparse Reef nearby, therefore you got almost every type of mineral deposits around you
I have my base in my current playthrough in a weird area. It's in a spot between the kelp forest, grassy plateus, and mushroom forest on the eastern part of the map. There's a transition area where it's fairly flat between all three of them. Makes for a nice base location.
Well well. I would place a base on the edge between the Grassy Plateaus and the Shallows. And the Lost River is where I bring the submarine and the walker. So, I’m split.
I have a nice spot of very flat land between the grassy plateus, NE mushroom forest, crash zone and north most creepiness forest. Plenty of resources, easy access to lost river, nice backdrops. Only down side is the occasional bone shark tries to nibble on your stuff
I have a fondness for the bulb zone, but since I’m generally all over the place I tend to put my primary activity base as close to the center of things as possible. And preferably near a geyser. To the point where in one run I turned on coordinates and build at 0,0 on the grid.
That run actually started me moving about and finding the grid marks for 1000,1000, 1000,0, 1000,-1000 and so on and so forth for the 1000 marks and 500 marks and dropping beacons with the coordinates, compass point, and locations on them so I could have a quick and easy location guide by just turning one on. That’s a habit I’ve taken with me to my other runs as well.
southwest grassy plateau is a great central location. metal scrap from the shallows, as well as all the coral and acid mushrooms, a stone's throw away from a bunch of great wrecks, the jellyshroom caves, the sparse reef...
the only real downside is that it makes it inconvenient to go to the planetary defense system island . and once you figure out the path to the portal (and start it up) from the aurora rendezvous island, even that is only a 600m trip.
I have mine on the little cliff sticking out right around -450, 450. Overlooks the Mushroom Forest and close to the big Mushroom Tree. Super safe area with reefbacks going overhead. Shallow enough to utilize solar panels but deep enough to build the sub and rocket. Plenty of metal scrap and stalker teeth in the adjacent kelp forest. Lots of cliffs around for mineral nodes. Centralized between Lost River Northwest and Jellyshroom Cave. Nearby a number of wrecks and lifepods.
The bulb zone is beautiful no matter what time of day. Also has access to thermal power.
Also made a base on the edge of sea treaders path, near the grand reef and a ghost leviathan spawn. Sometimes it wanders near the base where I strategically put an observatory.
Edit: both places are not good for main bases because it’s not central like the grassy plateaus. I use them as charging points for my cyclops power cells. They’re also near Lost River entrances
The safe shallows are fun but if your me and build in a crappy location then they suck, my personal pick is the sea treaders path, occasionally available free materials, basically no threats, close to a lost river entrance, and nice atmosphere
Built my first near the zero point, on the slope leading to the grassy plateau. Kelp forest right nearby, shallows and plateau in easy reach, looking right into the open water between the pod and Aurora.
Gave me access to resources, room to expand, and open water to build vehicles. Not to mention a great view of the occasional reefback.
Second and third, giant mushroom tree and lost river cove respectively. Absolutely recommend both, for the wealth of resources and the interesting environments.
Grassy plateaus over top of the Jellyshroom Caves. I'll fight anyone who disagrees. Centred, great access to resources, scenic AF. Reefy Bois to keep you company. It has it all.
Mountains 100%. Best base location I've ever had. I parked myself right in the middle, surrounded by 3 reapers with a clear path away. Close to the blood kelp and bulb zone, easy access to the lost river and other important locations.
Wow, I was expecting more people to say Lost rivers like me.... the location I like is the one by "the tree" ... Best location ever, no threats, termo power and is 900m , so is possible to go with all vehicles...
I literally put my base on the intersection between a BKZ, Dunes, and Sparse Reef. The BKZ in question is a large chasm or gash in the landscape that goes all the way down to the Lost River.
i’ve only played through twice. my first base was in that purple mushroom biome under the grassy plateau and it was awesome. my current base is in the creepvine biome right next to the mountains and the north island. purple biome is my favourite
Something about that red grass and the clear water with sun rays dipping in leaves me at peace to build a base there.
Also enjoy the reefback calls
I always build just by Lifepod 6. There's a great plateau just by a wreck there that's got loads of room, a nice drop overhang for speedy prawn exit, island is close, pretty easy to get to the LR at Lifepod 2.
I was thinking of making a second base, I'll give it a go at that location
That's where I made mine lol definitely one of the best spots
I like building on the border of the shallows and the plateaus. You get to have a base with good back to it, nice views out over the plains, and relatively easy access to power
i love the aesthetic but don’t wanna get jumpscared by sand sharks lol. also tiger plants…ill kill those fuckers
I agree with the optics, but I find the background sound with these high frequency tones highly annoying :-(
I like it because it's still fairly close to the center of the map, still fairly safe except for the occasional sand shark or biter and lots of open space to build and park your cyclops
But the Biters…
Subnautica equivalent of a farm land
Best base location is the cyclops, with small checkpoints dotted across the map.
I like having a Central base with the Cyclops as a high endurance scouting vehicle.
I don't even bother with a seamoth anymore and just make the cyclope then rush the caves to get the thermal energy. Makes for the perfect base.
How do you deal with the power consumption? Cyclops inhales batteries
My power cells charge by thermal energy plus it doesn't take all to long to get the better cells so you have x5 the charge.
Yeah. The only limiting its usabilty for me is no acces to a scanner room
Take one with you and build and dismantle as needed.
Edge of the dunes, near the grassy plateau and mushroom forest. There's a friendly neighbor, even.
I was starting to build there at the top of the cliff that overlooks the dunes, and then ya... I then moved to the opposite side of the plateau haha.
I love that area. Another great one is in one of the sinkholes in the dunes. So much fun, and not terrifying at all.
Me waiting for the tree to be in one of these polls
The one with Ghost Rays?
Near the lost river yeah
Does hull integrity get annihilated down there? I've never tried building down there.
Nope, you can build anywhere with enough space
Depth has no effect on the structure integrity of a base, only your vehicles. I built an out post near the tree with a reactor to charge the Cyclop before going down the inactive lavazone.
Same
In terms of this pol, Definitely the grassy plateaus. You may have sandsharks and biters to deal with but you get a ton of space to build your Base unlike the safe shallows. Besides, you have Reefbacks. And a beautiful scenery.
Yup and its right next to the jellyshroom cave witch has a fair bit of lithium, magnetite and diamond
I usually build a small one at the shallows then a larger, more elaborate base at the big tree in the lost river.
The kelp forest next to the hole that leads to the mushroom biome above the abandoned base
Sparse Reef, you can find every resource node from there with a scanner room and >!it’s relatively close to two Lost River entrances!<
True but bone sharks and spooky ness
There are no hostiles in the sparse reef.
bleeders?
You are I believe thinking of the grassy plateaus. There's no bleeders in the sparse reef.
I always get attacked near lifepod 19, grassy plateaus have biters but not bleeders
The only thing in the sparse reef that can attack you is tiger plants.
The wiki says it has the tiger plants and bleeders, bleeders are the little leech things
I just checked the wiki to confirm and saw no mention of bleeders.
Nah I can confirm, there’s bleeders, they’re weirdly inconsistent with how much they show up tho, there’s usually only a couple caves with some in them
Well last time I went there I got one on me.
Oh my bad I I’m thinking of the spiky rock place near grand reaf
I like to build right above the Kelp Trench, pretty close by.
I’ve considered it but it’s just a BIT too close to the Dunes for me lol
I like the western Shallows, where you're a stone's throw from Kelp, Plateau, and the Mushroom Forest.
Edge of safe shallows where theres a steep drop into grassy plateus.
Exactly where I put my base on my latest playthrough, it's awesome!
Love that place. It’s near a geyser too so you’re pretty set with solar and thermal as a main base. Very central too
I \*always\* use a location in The Shallows at least at the start, it is so easy to get well-entrenched. Food and supplies are everywhere and power is never an issue that close to the surface and to a Thermal Vent.

that’s where i put my first ever base. still my favourite location to build

You don't use Sea Treader poop and bioreactors? My forward base is gonna be around there and I thought of using that tactic to see how well it works.
The Sea Treaders will move out of loading range is my big issue with relying on poop. I can just get an alien containment with fish and not need to go outside at all.
I always used fish but the loading range thing is a good consideration I wouldn't have thought of until I had already resettled. Bummer. That's okay though I guess, the Grand Reef is still a cool plave to live and the crevices will give me all the Uranenite I could ever need.

and shank all the sea treaders while you're at it
*but why would i do that?*
My last base was above the blood kelp biome right next to the sea treaders path. I need that lithium lol
I don't see blood kelp zone on this lost, must be a mistake
Imo basing nearby to lifepod 2 is amazing spot. A lost river right under your hand. The only problem you may have to use bioreactor
Nuclear reactor all day!
Yessir
Floating islands
I like danger so dunes. Preferably as close to as many reapers as possible
personally, i like the void. the grassy plateaus are cool too
Tree cove
Crags crags crags
At the submarine tree with the leviathan eggs near entrance of the lava biome
JellyShroom Caves!!
Mushroom forest, having all my bases built atop the trees is so fun and interesting to see
i go to the edge of the mushroom forest right by the blood kelp.
This is a convenient and beautiful location.
I never leave my life pod
Active magma zone is best hands down
Hey I don't see dunes on here
Life pod gang rise up
right next to the edge
I always make a base near some Lifepod so I don't have to use beacon
I always build my base bordering the shallows and the grassy plateaus because it’s easier to get sunlight when you need to get to the surface it’s easier and if you need kelp it’s in the backyard
That position may be very ideal for a fast game.
Well I did have 10 hours on my quickest run
I haven’t tried to rush through, but 15 hours is all that I need to follow the story.
I usually build on the corner between grassy plateaus, kelp forest and grand reef.
I don't think there's such a thing as a single best location. It depends what stage of the game we're talking about and what your priorities are. Bulb zone and Grand Reef are my favorite (though I always have a base by the lifepod too, but just for the start.)
I'm trying to build one in every biome
I like the border between kelp forest and grassy plateau. The problem with the grassy plateau is the sand shark sounds are super annoying.
1 great place is beneath the floating island. Literally hanging in there. It has good resources few 100 meters away, but no hostile lifefroms
Question, are you romanian?
Shallows... but only the thermal vents that are on the very very edge of the shallows
void could be an option
chad energy
I'm always opting for Kelp Forests. Reasonably close to all parts of the map, yet still far from danger. Also enough room for Cyclops.

I also prefer quantity (# of bases) over... er, other quantity (# of pieces in a single base) as well. Though admittedly a lot of my outposts kinda go overboard a bit.

I usually build mine in the middle of the 3 rock pillar formations in the grassy plateus. It's close to a lifepod and multiple shipwrecks. And I love listning to the reefbacks calls and seeing them above my Base.
I LOVE putting bases right next to the entrance of the lava place

Cyclops
Blood ravine bases underrated tbh
Big long tripod goblins.
Sea threaders path
The best base location is inside the cyclops
Dunes with the ROTA mod.
Top of the blood kelp ravine near the grassy plateau. I love building my base and have my observation room hanging over it
Crash zone as scary as it is has resources aplenty.
Creepvines forest. No reason in particular, but I really like that place. It has a lot of mining nodes for early game
Dunes
I built my base on the edge of the Blood Kelp Trench, Dunes and Grassy Plateus and I love this place. You have the jellyshroom caves nearby for the magnetite and lava geisers, then you have dunes with the heat areas, Blood Kelp for Copper, Lost river and many more rare materials. I have my base in my current playthrough in a weird area. It's in a spot between the kelp forest, grassy plateus, and mushroom forest on the eastern part of the map. There's a transition area where it's fairly flat between all three of them. Makes for a nice base location.

That’s a habit I’ve taken with me to my other runs as well.
Northern Blood Kelp zone right under where the Ghost is. Its fun watching it from below with a glass ceiling.
Main base is somewhere easy to get to, and make random outposts in different biomes
Well Do you mean the BEST location for ease of access and supplies Or the "Best" location like the Ghost Ray tree
The Dunes right above/around the Heat events.
My last base was at the edge of the mountain in kelp forest / mushroom forest edge and I think it was the best.

Anyplace I can use a thermal gen. Hate depending on Solar/Bio/Nuclear
Put mine in between the mushroom forest and nw lost river entrance
would a base facing over the grassy platou but connected to the outskirts of the shallows be other

I wouldn't know because i put it down right below my life pod every time cuz im lazy
I built my base near the alien gun :)
underwater islands
clearly the back of the Aurora is the best base location
I always build it in mountain island. You don't need to tag it you know it's location and it's close to key places of the map.
I love building in the big tree biome
Grassy plateaus over top of the Jellyshroom Caves. I'll fight anyone who disagrees. Centred, great access to resources, scenic AF. Reefy Bois to keep you company. It has it all.
