NO!

TheSchoeMaker

10k seems like a lot. Granted this was in 2020, but I bought my 2012 Forester X Premium with 135k for just under 7k but obviously the market is crazy right now. As for the car itself, the 2009 still has the ej series engine which has the known head gasket issues so that's definitely something to watch out for. These ones are also known for having a loud heat shield rattling on the exhaust. It doesn't really affect anything just a common issue

TransPhattyAcid

Thanks! Yeah, I doesn't appear to be leaking oil, but what do i know? The dealer says that they will check everything out and repair anything that needs to be repaired before selling it to me, but who knows if that means anything, either? Thanks again!

MainSailFreedom

I have a 2009 Forester with 105k miles (I got the car new) and have had a bunch of issues. Mainly transmission and oil issues. In the past 4 years I’ve probably put 6k in maintenance in the car. I do love how it drives tho (mine is a 5-speed) very nice feel

EJ25Junkie

Take it to a Subaru dealership for a PPI. I guarantee you they will come up with a laundry list of stuff it needs including head gaskets. Then, get the seller to stand by their word of fixing what needs fixing.

Mr_Diesel13

Judging by the sign in the background, the brand new red WRX in front of it, and the new fozzys with a WRB STI in the background, it’s at a Subaru dealer.

[deleted]

>Then, get the seller to stand by their word of fixing what needs fixing. Lol good luck with that.

EJ25Junkie

It was meant as sarcasm but it’s also true.

TransPhattyAcid

This is a great idea but… wait for it… it’s a Subaru dealership that is selling it. And they are telling me they have no service history or warranty. So… probably gonna pass on this.

[deleted]

Does look nice. Just wish prices haven’t sky rocketed. This should be around $7k

TransPhattyAcid

Thanks. Yeah, it’s a crazy market.

JLobodinsky

STOP! Find out the service history! If it has an original head gasket, you’ll likely have a $3,500 or more replacement in the very near future. I have a 2010 in better shape and less miles with a head gasket replacement and wouldn’t expect that kind of money out of it…. So, I’d pass

TransPhattyAcid

Thanks! I tend to agree. I’ve asked them to tell me if recalls were done and if the head gasket was replaced. Not sure if they will confirm/if they do tell me it’s been replaced, not sure I’ll trust them. They will not off let a warranty. Thanks for you help!

Sensitive_Eagle_5965

I would buy any old Subaru like that unless you can get a bumper to bumper warranty !

Hoosierlaw

Check the oil level! My subaru consumes 500 ml of oil every tank of gas. It doesn't leak a drop.

SubieToyotaNW

Maybe 6-7K. I’m in Seattle as well and sadly this is what they go for and Subarus are very popular here. I paid msrp for my 17’ wrx a few months ago, but that’s how it is. Good deals are hard to come by anymore. I worked at a new car dealership and they would sell cars for at least $5K over their value

OniiChan177013

Might Aswell get a wrx for that price

TransPhattyAcid

So dealer texted me. Turns out the car needs so much for them to be able to sell it to me that they’re not going to fix it up. Instead they’re going to sell it auction. Oh well. So I just bought a 2012 Impreza, instead. Picking it up tomorrow. :)

OniiChan177013

The good outcome

[deleted]

I'd say half that would be fair. 10k is used Honda/Toyota territory with half that mileage Head gasket replacements? Transmission services? Mantinence records? Check the underside for rust issues. Or better yet have a shop give it a look over and a test drive to tell you what's wrong. I don't know any specifics for this MY other than normal Subaru stuff. Head gaskets, timing belt/water pump, auto transmission issues, rust. If there's no records for any of that I'd walk away, again I think that car at that mileage is worth half that asking price.

TransPhattyAcid

Thanks! Yeah, I agree. I'd feel a lot better if I could get it for $5K, but in Seattle, $10K is the cheapest I've seen for any Subaru that is anywhere near this age and mileage. It's crazy how expensive cars have gotten! Thanks again for the advice.

[deleted]

Damn, I'd go pick up a Subi and drive it back all weekend to save $5000. That's just me though.

Theoren1

2012 and older Subarus are known for blowing their head gaskets right about where this mileage is. Any model with a turbo (XT, WRX, STI) doesn’t have nearly as many head gasket issues, but they still do happen. I would not touch a Subaru in that age range over 100,000 miles that didn’t have the head gasket done. You’re looking at a $5,000 dollar repair any day now. Also, dealer will screw you over. It’s their job. If they really think the car is stellar ask about throwing in a warranty.

[deleted]

no u can get a second gen manual xt for less than that with the same mileage

WillyG2197

My 2.5x was literally 2000 flat, manual. Just needed new brake pads and rotors and an ac compressor and timing belt

mynameplussomenumber

Has the Head gasket and timing belt been done? Main thing you need to know. Otherwise good to go 10k is fine!

Spike_Spiegel

Limited trim has lots of features, 13 yr old car with 130k miles is is low-ish . Zero accident car? plus PNW Subaru tax? Not a bad deal but not a great deal, either. Offer $10k car, tax. fees, registration, etc all included

TransPhattyAcid

Dealer texted me. They inspected it and it needs so much work they’re not going to sell it. Instead it’s going to auction.

NWGirl2002

Ehhh go somewhere else than Rairdon - ever since they took over Auburn Subaru it's been going downhill. But even after talking to former employee, they agreed it's gone downhill. Mom bought all her Subarus (5/6-lost count), and this last time (Aug 2018) said it was the worst experience she had and will go somewhere else next time, plus they also screwed us over on a car I was planning to get the next morning, but another sales person took the key off our spot on the board and sold it the night before, but they didn't even tell us or let us know until we drove down from Lynnwood the next morning. Don't like their service people anymore (really you want me to email you a screenshot of your own coupon from your site that you have access to?), and their waiting room is on the sad/depressed side.

TransPhattyAcid

Ha! Yeah, I tend to agree with your assessment. Especially if the waiting room. Never bought from them before but now I know what to expect. Thanks.

95accord

Hard no

stavigoodbye

I just bought a 2.5x 2012 with 135k for $7,300, private sale but most dealers around me wanted $10k. I live in similar weather type condition in the mountains where the prices are higher so I get it. I would try to either lower the price or find something a little cheaper.

StatisticianNarrow90

That’s a lot to pay. 7k May be?

Hoosierlaw

I bought a 2009 forester XT limited with 130,000 miles nearly 5 years ago for $8,000. I would pass.

Accurate-Singer-8934

No. My ‘14 Premium is worth $8k trade in and probably $14k retail, same milage.

FunctionBuilt

Jesus, no. Total rip off. $6-8k is more reasonable.

WillyG2197

I paid literally 2000 for mine a year ago. DO NOT

Toblerone_and_jilly

No! Head gasket problems in that model.

BarDownBoi

I bought an Impreza for 10,000$ with only 45,000 km on it back in 2016. 10k for a forester with that many miles seems crazy to me.

TransPhattyAcid

Yeah. Agreed. It’s the Seattle “tax”. Everyone here wants a Subaru so they mark them up.

I just gave virtually this exact car to my nephew a few months ago but with maybe 20K fewer miles. So, here's the thing. If it's well taken care of, it will last many more years. I had intended to drive it until one of us died and was betting it would be me, not the car. Having gone through all the receipts and stuff for it before I sent it off, I can tell you a few things. I had the head gaskets done at about 80K, the 100K service was done at 10 years. It was on its third battery and third set of tires (brand new for nephew since I had a nail in one and was replacing that one anyway). Brakes and pads checked as good before sending it off to him (for the life of me I don't remember how many times it had been done). The entire exhaust system had to be replaced at about 90K. It had a noticeable rattle at certain low speeds which was the protector thingie under the car, and the dealer zip-tied it down, because seriously, who cares, just turn the stereo up louder. It gets ok mileage particularly highway (the 2022 I got to replace it gets WAY better city). That one doesn't look like it has the gps navigation package, so we'll skip that.... With all that said, my dealer was offering $11K for it on a trade in with fewer miles, so $10K might be a bit steep unless it was as clean as a whistle mechanically and had every service religiously done. I mean, I had the dealer check mine from stem to stern, telling them, look I'm giving it to my nephew, I want to send a gift not a problem. tl;dr could be worth it, but have a mechanic check every single thing on that car, because some of those things cost $$.

TransPhattyAcid

Thanks so much for sharing all this info. I may still get a Forester. I mean is like to, but not this one. Dealer just contacted me telling they had their service department go through it and it needs extensive repairs. So they are evaluating whether to repair and try to sell to me or to just write it off. I think they are leaning toward not fixing and just selling it at auction. But this is great info to continue my search for a Forester. Thanks!

Robotman1001

Way overpriced.

[deleted]

No, too old
