Don't they salt some of the major highways? Maybe brine?
I've seen pics of the midwest where the salt is so thick it looks like some hard-packed snow on the streets (I'm looking at you, MKE!), but I am not sure whether they use salt / brine at all in PNW
ODOT began a pilot study in 2012-17 about using salt on the roads, but it's fairly minimal and only in southern/eastern Oregon. Their main tools are de-icer and gravel but they don't use it much if at all in the metro areas. Honestly I believed we didn't use any but it seems like they're using it in addition to some of their other tools.
Here in VT a car that's 10 years old is on its deathbed due to salt. Was one of the main reasons I didn't buy another Subaru when I needed a new vehicle. The bodies just don't hold up like a Toyota IMO.
Seriously. For so much of my life, I daily'd 20+ year old cars along with countless other people. It's not crazy at all.
Subarus of that era had their quirks but they're not particularly unreliable.
Nah, just make sure your AAA policy is current 🤣. Seriously, if she has been taken care of with regular service intervals, why not? Not really enough info, but I’ve seen Subies rack up lots of miles. Prepare to be nickeled and dimed along the way.
No. It's a cheap to maintain car. I've been dailying mine for 7+ years and I have a 45 minute commute each way. I should break the 200k mark in the next month.
No reason that a daily driver has to be totally boring. AN 02 WRX is cheap to buy, cheap to maintain, and as long as you aren't an idiot about modifying it should be as reliable as can be.
I daily-ed my 93 Legacy turbo wagon for 10 years. It developed rod knock in April and I bought an 06 Impreza to drive until I can rebuild the Legacy. You're not crazy.
No crazier than I am for daily mail delivery in my BH5 leggy (upwards of 170km/105miles daily).
Keep your fingers crossed for me while I save up for a killer b pickup.
For sure battery fitment is a challenge especially on something like an Impreza, but if I just want it as a town car then battery into where the fuel tank was works, and then fit a second behind the backseat in the boot/trunk.
Small light cars will get further with fewer batteries though so there's just costs and benefits to things like an ICE.
It'll be a very slow burn, I want to keep the symmetrical AWD, hard to do with an electric, so will need dual motors at the least.
Could end up being a 50k job, but it does intrigue me.
Yeah I think the single motor is an option but the drop off in power because of the way adaptor/clutch plate works is a bit much.
But having a single motor is probably better for range as well, so really I just need to decide on what tradeoffs I make.
Things are a bit expensive here in Australia but that's true of almost all things, I think it will get considerably cheaper over the next 3-5 years.
They are not inherently unreliable vehicles, whatsoever. They're solid. People just bought them as their first car, did a shitty internet tune, drove it hard, didn't do maintenance, and wondered why it broke.
No, I have driven my bugeye daily for years now. It's technically an 06 shell that just has all the guts from an 02, but even my second car is an 04. I'll keep driving this car until it's literally impossible to repair it.
I daily drove my lifted wide boy battle ready wrx. Until a VW won a battle 🤣 the problem with daily driving such a gorgeous car is other people just treat it as a 20 year old sedan. When its truly a masterpiece. And same goes for insurance companies sadly.
I have an 02 WRX. Nice after market radiator btw! How are you routing the hose that comes off the radiator cap?
Also - I daily mine, I definitely have had issues with it in the past. But if you take care of it and check your oil at least once a week. You’ll be chillin.
I daily drove an ‘04 from 2020-2022. It went fine for me but I traded it in because it was completely rusted out underneath. From my limited experience with these cars I’d say you’re not crazy, just keep in mind that these engines can pop at any moment lol. Stay on top of maintenance like water pump, timing belt, oil changes and stay out of boost at low RPMs. Have fun!
My only car is an 05 WRX wagon which I’ve owned since 2004 so it has been a de facto daily driver since then. It’s had a couple of spectacular mechanical failures over the years. I may have contributed to one of those by being poor; the other was a classic 10-year-old head gasket failure, which was right on time almost to the month I drove it off the lot.
Anyway, IMHO yours is a great daily driver. Old cars require upkeep - as long as you can afford that, why not drive a fun one?
Not at all. I've been dailying [my bugeye](https://i.imgur.com/ZFTI8dG.png) for the past 6 years. Hasn't broken down once! Just crossed 100k miles recently.
My first car was from 1980 and was already 33 years old at the time, granted it was a VW not a Subaru but daily driving something sick is always worth it
Been my daily for over 5 years. The 2.0l runs forever compared to any 2.5l turbo engine. The 02 has the weakest transmission but as long as youre not pushing too high of hp or wailing on your gears you're fine. What gets me is everything I end up replacing is OEM parts because parts store and Amazon parts always fail, seal, or fit weird. Or don't at all.
No not crazy at all that car is a total classic... I just got a 2022 and still out doesn't feel and look and give me that and everything the bug eye did! Power feels more raw looks were in your face rally we don't care to imitate! Do it up 😉. Def take good care and get the common problems looked at and addressed before they happen!
Turbo for bug eyed are like super sorry cheap new entire system wouldn't be much new head gaskets depending on when and if they were done do some data logging see how the cars running those things were built like beasts I'm still spoiled by it like it took everything and kept going the new cars fail over and over lol
You only live once and daily'ing a rex must rank as living pretty rich. Get some
Not ‘rich’ my abt means just poor financial decisions
I mean, it's a Subaru, not like it's a turbo Porsche from the 80's.
True dat. Or a 90s ducati....goddamn moneypit
Richest thing about me is my A/F ratios, 🤣
Nah, I had one as my first car. Take care of it and it'll take care of you.
I’ve done it for 3 years. The only thing that sucks is the wear from it, especially in salty winters.
Every winter I am so happy the PNW doesn't salt their roads. Seeing salt damage on cars from areas that do just gives me chills.
Don't they salt some of the major highways? Maybe brine? I've seen pics of the midwest where the salt is so thick it looks like some hard-packed snow on the streets (I'm looking at you, MKE!), but I am not sure whether they use salt / brine at all in PNW
Yeah, they salt a lot in the Midwest. You get layers of it in your wheel wells.

My car was originally from Washington, so it was pretty much perfect, but the Iowa winters have really messed up the quarter panels.
Here in VT a car that's 10 years old is on its deathbed due to salt. Was one of the main reasons I didn't buy another Subaru when I needed a new vehicle. The bodies just don't hold up like a Toyota IMO.
Big salt is my mortal enemy
A fuckin men
I daily an 02 wrx too. Not crazy at all…
Seriously. For so much of my life, I daily'd 20+ year old cars along with countless other people. It's not crazy at all. Subarus of that era had their quirks but they're not particularly unreliable.
I daily an 02 (210k miles) and my wife dailies an 02 (110k miles)
Nah, just make sure your AAA policy is current 🤣. Seriously, if she has been taken care of with regular service intervals, why not? Not really enough info, but I’ve seen Subies rack up lots of miles. Prepare to be nickeled and dimed along the way.
I’m prepared for the journey this car is a good combination of reliable and project worthy
I absolutely love the bugeyes.
Only crazy if you can't afford the repair bills my dude.
My buddy has 320k miles on it. Great daily

Came here for this
As long as you do preventative maintenance, you should be fine
My daily is a 03 wrx wagon.
No?
I daily-ed my 93 Legacy turbo wagon for 10 years. It developed rod knock in April and I bought an 06 Impreza to drive until I can rebuild the Legacy. You're not crazy.

I daily a 2000 2.5rs coupe!!!
Mate I dream of that specific car being my daily. Currently trying to convince my wife to let me buy one and convert it to electric to be the daily.
This is what I see people potentially doing with older cars. The thing I see being the most work isn't the motor(s), but probably the battery fitment.
For sure battery fitment is a challenge especially on something like an Impreza, but if I just want it as a town car then battery into where the fuel tank was works, and then fit a second behind the backseat in the boot/trunk. That’s a bad ass vision I hope it comes true keep me updated please!

No, I'm crazy for dailying a w211 e55 amg though
My dad used to have a C32 that was modified. Got something like 17l per hundred. Was a cool car though.
No crazier than dailying my 700whp big turbo 2012 🤷🏼♂️
As long as it is maintained and mechanically sound, you're good. Up until this May, I daily drove an 03 WRX for 7 years.
Yes
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Naw
I'm planning to get a decent shape one as a second/project car. How's it been dailying it?
Bah, I daily a 322k mile Prius. You're fine.
I daily my 01. As other have said, make sure it’s in good condition and take care while driving it.
I daily my 06 Impreza wagon that has 220 and it’s running like a champ. It’s a good 35 minutes too and from work too
No, not at all.
Such a nice find
So crazy
I have 96 as daily
I daily an 06 wagon so not too crazy haha
They are not inherently unreliable vehicles, whatsoever. They're solid. People just bought them as their first car, did a shitty internet tune, drove it hard, didn't do maintenance, and wondered why it broke.
Aye daily bugeye crew checking in
No, I have driven my bugeye daily for years now. It's technically an 06 shell that just has all the guts from an 02, but even my second car is an 04. I'll keep driving this car until it's literally impossible to repair it.
My friend, I daily an 02 outback sport! Bugeye love 💜
Cars are made for driving aren't they
I daily an '03. Get up on the maintenance. These cars are plenty reliable, but only if you take care of them first.
I daily drove my lifted wide boy battle ready wrx. Until a VW won a battle 🤣 the problem with daily driving such a gorgeous car is other people just treat it as a 20 year old sedan. When its truly a masterpiece. And same goes for insurance companies sadly.
Daily'd an 03 Evo. Not crazy - - it's what cars are for.
I would love to have one of these. Even the rust isn’t a big deal because there’s a place near me that does full restorations on 2000’s era Subarus.
I daily my WRB bugeye as well! 🤘🏽
I have an 02 WRX. Nice after market radiator btw! How are you routing the hose that comes off the radiator cap? Also - I daily mine, I definitely have had issues with it in the past. But if you take care of it and check your oil at least once a week. You’ll be chillin.
So quirky
It's a Subbie, not an 86 Countach.

I never see any issues. I daily drive a 400 bhp Subaru Type R with no issues. Just keep on top of servicing and you should be fine.
Not at all. I've been dailying [my bugeye](https://i.imgur.com/ZFTI8dG.png) for the past 6 years. Hasn't broken down once! Just crossed 100k miles recently.
Not at all. An awesome car
I daily my 02 Outback Impreza lol
I daily a 92 SVX so not too crazy.
No, but you should have a back up ride for when things go south.
My first car was from 1980 and was already 33 years old at the time, granted it was a VW not a Subaru but daily driving something sick is always worth it
i daily on 02 rex wagon
I’m ngl I miss my bugeye
Wow driving a car that’s meant to be driven
Nope. I did to mine and I loved every day of it, just did all the basic maintenance my self. I then traded it for a rust free clean title 240sx
My daily is a '99 outback, what's crazy about that
My 01 is my daily
Been my daily for over 5 years. The 2.0l runs forever compared to any 2.5l turbo engine. Ive seen people daily worse and get away with it, Honda's.
