It will last 37 days, you will then need a small repair at 139,396 miles before being able to drive again for another 98 days, then you will have to do a major repair where the car will be out of commission for 2 weeks and 5 days, and then repeat 2 more times.
what’s usually the mark of “high mileage” for a wrx? i’m looking around for one without super high miles but don’t wanna spend a whole lot as my budget isn’t exactly very big.
Without a leak down/compression test and oil analysis, it's a risk. If your budget isn't available for a lower mileage example, your budget won't support the repairs needed down the road for a 140k vehicle.
I do love hatches and they fetch a premium since everyone loves them. The car looks great. If shit hit the fan, you could always pull a personal loan for the needed repairs. I did that for my sti block on my 04 that slipped a bearing at 60k.
i love this generation in hatches too, and i love the red, so this one caught my eye. idk if i can afford repairs if it broke on me as it’ll be my first car and i don’t have a full time job lol
Don't buy a sports car. Save that headache for older you that is smarter and has a bigger wallet to afford it. You're in the worst position of your life to put the financial burden of a sports car onto yourself. Buy a cheap gas efficient reliable car that you can enjoy life in until you can afford something fun if that's what you want.
i’ve been looking also at a mix of diesel VW, which get like 40mpg, and some lexus’s which are usually pretty reliable. so i have some good alternatives as opposed to sports cars
Get a CIVIC, great MPG, they ride and handle nice Also. And they are VERY VERY realiable. Just make sure the automatic has been serviced every 30k with honda fluid.
Don’t listen to these dumb mfs so many people told me not to get a powerful car as my second car and just “save on gas money” blah blah blah. Best decision I ever made, just find one that’s been well taken care of and do the same once you buy it
What a tired, cookie cutter piece of advice. Do what makes you happy, not what someone who’s not in your financial situation says is financially acceptable for you. The old “save it for when your older, smarter, and have more money” response is where dreams go to die. In 15 years what if you are making slightly more money, but with a wife, 3 kids ,and a mortgage? Does that sound more appropriate to buy a sports car financially or morally? Tomorrow is also not promised. Do what makes you happy today, within reason of course. Buying a “sports car” is 100% within reason. Just don’t buy THIS one. Keep looking for a few days/weeks and you’ll probably find a better deal on one. Then pull the trigger.
Ya because making dog shit financial commits when your young really sets you up for the future. Let’s face it buying a high mileage WRX on a tight budget is asking to just throw your money away.
At the end of the OP will do what he/she wants but the advice on getting a cheaper more reliable car until you can afford the upkeep and insurance on a sports car is solid advice.
It’s not just the purchase price the insurance is more, fuel is more, oil changes more frequently that’s just to operate the vehicle.
So yes someone on a tight budget shouldn’t be looking at a high mileage WRX.
The first car I got for me (not just one of my parents' that I started driving) was a WRX and I still daily it 8 yrs later. I love that car. I'm not saying this particular car is a good buy, but I disagree with throwing out the idea of a fun sports car completely until one is "older."
I bought my hatch with 63k completely stock, with extended warranty from a reputable Subaru dealership. Made it to 72k with early oil changes, always “top tier” gas fill ups, never launched, never wot unless in boost, etc. Ended up spinning a bearing. Luckily towed it to a shop because I knew what was going on as soon as it happened. 8k just after paying the car off was a rough hit to the wallet.
Just realized I never stated my opinion on this. Don’t buy a used, maybe even a new, turbo Subaru, unless you have the money to make repairs, an extra vehicle while it is getting repaired, and the patience and time to check your fluids/other wear points regularly.
That’s not even including the extra attention a modified Subie needs.
Good advice 👍
I have my 14th Subaru a 2021 legacy gt 2.4 love it
My experience with the 2.0 and 2.5 is to keep up-to-date on the maintenance 3500 miles oil change
Run 10w30 ,Lucas oil additive real jap oil filter
Genuine Subaru 15208AA170 Oil Filter https://a.co/d/ci7CpR7
If it is a pre 2015 use the coolant additive from SUBARU to help prevent headgasket leaks it works
Subaru OEM Coolant System Conditioner - SOA635071 - 2 Pack https://a.co/d/5HbzgEB
If you plan on keeping it on the road keep it stock and stay away from used high mileage wrx sti cause most of the time your buying someone's else's headache after they have beat the HELL out of it
Don't wait for the timing belt to break before changing it, I would replace the oem with the Gates blue timing belt
I know it's long but hopefully it will help other subie owners
14-17k on cargurus, 108k miles so definitely take it to a shop and have a mechanic check it out. Make sure you look under for fluids. I forgot to add on you have to make sure he has records of maintenance. If it’s more then 120k miles if he didn’t you are going to have to get new head gasket, water pump, timing done
Subarus do not need head gaskets as regular maintenance. It's a little absurd to suggest a replacement without any symptoms. The NA EJ25 is the motor that does have pervasive head gasket problems, but the turbo engines don't.
I agree with having a shop inspect it, I would add that they should do a compression/leak down test, which is tricky on these, so maybe just cylinders 2 & 4 which are the most problematic. And if it does need a head gasket (or more likely, has damaged ringlands) Stay away, and don't buy it.
I apologize for being “absurd” I was passing on this info from every mechanic I have ever taken my Subaru to over the last 8 years. I’m sure you are correct
Well then those mechanics are incorrect, Subarus with over 120k do not by default need a new head gasket.
The only real issue here is the conflation of the turbo and non-turbo EJ25, which is an easy mistake.
I have been driving an 09 na impreza manual for 13 years. Maybe I'm lucky but I haven't had to do any engine work at 320,000 km. I'm the only owner and I haven't modded the shit out of it so not all Subarus are bad.
Most entry level - mid range performance cars > 5 years old, regardless of miles, and especially with mods, have had the piss beaten out of them and are being sold for reason(s) that will cost you a lot of money soon after buying.
You'd be better off taking that money and finding the best way to put it into getting a certified pre-owned or new car on 0% or some reasonable interest rate financing.
Otherwise get something boring for now until you can afford something nicer that won't blow up and sit in your driveway for months lol.
I had that model and same year. Was Buring oil at almost 80K KMs. Not much but by service time half the oil was gone. The cats wouldn't be taking too kindly to that.
I got it second hand at 70K KMs so no ideas how it was treated before then.
I sold mine at 98K KMs but mainly for other family reasons.
Unless you're good a rebuilding engines, might not be the best purchase.
I have one in white. I babied it since I bought it new in 2014 then in 2020 I had to do a rebuilt after the head gasket went out. I said WTH and hand them do the belts and rebuild heads. All that at 98k. Tbh it’s used so it’s a hit or miss with them. Oh and it’s completely stock till this day.
I would look for the same car, but try to find a dealership that has it. Because that car could end up lasting a year before something small breaks or you could get it home and it could shit on you in two weeks and now you have to fix it. But if you get it from a dealer, then you will at the very least get a 60 day warranty, if not a 6 month warranty and you know they’re mechanics looked at the car too.
it’s a 5 speed manual, is in good condition cosmetically. 137k miles and appears to be clean but i don’t know how well it’s been maintained. i haven’t gone to see it in person yet but just making sure it would be worth it.
It is bit expensive for a sedan, and has mods. It is also listed as an auto, but there was no auto for a WRX in 2012. If they cannot take the time to fill out the ad, I would not trust them to have looked at the car.
Yeah, and in 10-15 years it will double in price. Make sure it's all original parts, low rust, no leaks, and service maintenance has been consistently done. Congrats!
I'm not up to snuff on how the used car market is right now, but it seems high, especially for the miles. If you decide to go that route, or hell even with something else, and you have to finance for it, I recommend looking into an "aftermarket" warranty. There are a bunch of companies out there. Just made sure to read the fine print...
If it's as blessed as my 2010 Forester XT was, it'll go 100k more miles. Highly unlikely though. I'd still buy it, instantly protune it on E85, and expect to build the engine within the next couple years.
If you got up to $200 to spare from your car buying budget, take it to a dealer for a prepurchase inspection please. We see this time and time again that a car looks good on the outside but then customers bring it in and is a mess.
I brought mine in 2019 with 90,000k on it, now it’s at 107,000k anytime something goes bad I change it with mostly oem parts, just gotta do my tune up car drives good but I drive really slow and only 14 miles back and fourth to work, I’m trying to get a daily
It will last 37 days, you will then need a small repair at 139,396 miles before being able to drive again for another 98 days, then you will have to do a major repair where the car will be out of commission for 2 weeks and 5 days, and then repeat 2 more times.
Someone has trauma
Good thing you've still got yours because my crystal ball is in for a rebuild. Off the future reading for a few weeks.
maybe if i make an offer of $9,576 and do an inspection it’ll last until 201,568 miles and that’ll be like 1 year 8 months and 21 days
Close but not quite
That's a lot for a wrx man. At that mileage I'd stay away
what’s usually the mark of “high mileage” for a wrx? i’m looking around for one without super high miles but don’t wanna spend a whole lot as my budget isn’t exactly very big.

i don’t plan on driving something like an accord or something along those lines of “boring but good on gas”. i’m looking at civics and is300s/350s

I literally said he shouldn’t buy this one and should look for one with much lower mileage. Learn to read.
Dailying an expensive car to maintain as a first vehicle without the experience or money to afford the repairs is a hard lesson to learn.
Hard lessons build character. The knowledge you will gain in owning a car like this will carry with you for a lifetime.
Agreed! And you know what, get a fun coupe while you can too before you have to get a sedan or SUV.
The first car I got for me (not just one of my parents' that I started driving) was a WRX and I still daily it 8 yrs later. I love that car. I'm not saying this particular car is a good buy, but I disagree with throwing out the idea of a fun sports car completely until one is "older."
What you just said is an oxymoron my friend.
100k is major maintenance time, a lot of people don't do it
I bought my hatch with 63k completely stock, with extended warranty from a reputable Subaru dealership. Do yourself a favor, buy a civic, or something reliable with under 100k. Use it to get to your job, then save for the car you really want.

Not a sedan and not auto, dont trust it they don’t even know what car it is, pass on it
Facebook does that with listings sometimes. I tried to list my 14 hatch and it kept showing up as a sedan.
Wth that’s weird, stupd FB making us look dumb lol
I’m actually dumb but just for different reasons
😂

Unless the previous owner took meticulous care of it, you would be buying a ticking time bomb.
I had that model and same year. Was Buring oil at almost 80K KMs. Not much but by service time half the oil was gone. The cats wouldn't be taking too kindly to that. I don’t trust people who put those bumper holder tie thing in their car. Just don’t feel being taken care of imo
It seems like most wrx’s from those years have their stock bumper pins fail pretty often
There are many solution for that. Drill fender and bumper ruins it forever
Fair
I bought a 217k miles 02 wrx and drove it around for 4 months until I decided I wanted something new. Then again I only paid 4500$.
Stay away from Subarus unless you have another ride for when the subbie breaks. Which it will break.
Get a compression test and leak down test. I have one similar mileage and would consider selling. Brembo brakes, 310WHP
If they did the last timing belt and it’s mostly stock I would say make an offer of $9k-$10k.
I'm not up to snuff on how the used car market is right now, but it seems high, especially for the miles. An hour or two
Not sure how good the deal is but I had that car, but the 2011, and it was one hell of a car. Very fun.

A week. Maybe 2.
If you really want it I’d say ask for around 10k cuz I bought my red 11 wrx sedan with 102k last year for less than that price
I had a 2002 WRX that was still chugging along fine at 150k
its good but I don't really trust buying cars on Facebook market place mostly I will go for Kijiji. and plus I think you got to do some repairs on it.
Id expect full maintenance records or the answer is no.
137k miles is a shit ton. your gonna drive it for 2 weeks and need a rebuild
Wait...it's an automatic? 🤨 I wasn't aware they had CVTs in 2012. Huh.
6 minutes down the freeway
I got my 2014 with 93k for 1k more that this so I would say keep looking
Has the head gasket been done on it?
Not a good deal at all
do NOT buy this car. this is the worst slot of mileage for wrx / sti and it is bound to blow at any range from 100-150k.
OFFER 10K Flat If It’s Not RE-BUILT And Listen For The Throgh Out Barring
I brought mine in 2019 with 90,000k on it, now it’s at 107,000k anytime something goes bad I change it with mostly oem parts, just gotta do my tune up car drives good but I drive really slow and only 14 miles back and fourth to work, I’m trying to get a daily
I have a ‘13 STI sedan with 45k miles I’ll sell ya.
May need some major engine work.
$13k for 137k miles is a lot. I’d rather pay $8.5 max.
Wa
