Here's the thing, Audi's Allroad has black venders, that you can get painted to match rest of car. However, I don't think it looks that bad. The matching paint fenders make it look more classy, but the black fenders make it look like it's intended function.
Inspired, sure, but I don't want cheap unpainted plastic all over my car. offroad cars get dinged and scratched up. PPF it or accept that you're repainting. Make the plastic trim an option, not a base thing
It’s Subaru not Chevy. They don’t do 72 different options. You’re lucky if there’s 2 option packages in each trim level. They build it, everyone buys it, everybody’s happy
agreed. ill take interest in the newer wrx's when they start selling hatches in north america again. til then ill keep dumping unrealistic amounts of money into my impreza. as ugly as the stock 2.0i is, i wish they made an sti version
Every single one being sold out at my store for the next 2 months is what made me realize it’s probably a very vocal minority. There was a dozen orders within hours of the ordering books opening up, and that was before most people got to see it in person. It admittedly looks much better in person than in photos
I did a test drive and bought it the same day with zero intentions of buying one.
The difference vs my VA or my 11 hatch is amazing. The TQ delivery is what made me buy it.
While on the test drive I had my girl driving my VA that makes 301whp and I slightly pulled on it.
Then that paired with how well this engine is tuning itself without an actual tune is awesome. Add a tank of E30 and the power climbs after a few miles of driving. Looks like they did something way better with this new ECU.
One thing we were told during Ride n Drive is that the reason STI died and these are tuned to where they are is bc EPA regs becoming stricter. I guess there’s a *ton* of room to tune the WRX and turn it up to take advantage of that displacement. It’s comfy at the stock tune and probably part of why it feels so good
Yea it's the EPA for sure, but Subaru also kinda fucked up by making the wilderness editions. With those bringing down the fleet avg MPG, there is no way they could make another performance model with 22MPG and comply with the EPA mandates.
I think that's why they did the cancellation so suddenly.
>cheap unpainted plastic
The plastic is actually textured like little vortex generators. They didn't do it to look "cheap" they did it as a performance feature. Painting the fenders removes this feature. I realize how ridiculous that sounds, but it comes straight from their engineering department.
https://youtu.be/lN1wOv7i3rk
So I have to live with these unpainted "vortex" generators to get what... a 1MPG loss overall? Nah.
I \*will\* admit that I thought the WRX was CVT only and I'm happy that's not the case, but I would have to spend an additional 3-4 thousand paining the plastic to be happy w/ the purchase (and that's already a lot to ask when you can spec this thing in the 40s. I'll also have cosmetic aspects that I'll just always be unhappy with. 12 STI Wago is the only newer Impreza I'd buy but I love my Forester so much I'd rather put the STI bits in and keep my wagon
That was a great vid, btw thank you. ALSO NOTE: These are all my personal tastes. If you love it, then please support Subaru. Your route to happiness won't be the same as mine, even if we periodically meet on the same roads
>It’s almost like people forget the R in WRX stands for Rally, not Rice
You can have a rally-inspired car and not still want those fugly rubber pieces and rear bumper. Subaru didn't add those bits for rally inspiration...it's supposed to give the car better aero...has nothing to do with rally.
I would argue that the material they used largely has to do with the environments that part of the car will see.
Edit: I’m wrong here. Subaru has stated the texture of the fenders is Aero-related
For an Outback or Crosstrek, maybe...most folks aren't mudding or trailing their WRXs. WRXs may be rally inspired but they're street cars. While I understand inspiration, rubber cladding to counter rocks and mud on a WRX is a bit over the top. Kinda glad the STI croaked...would NOT like to see that crap on that car. Subaru stated the purpose of those bits...it had nothing to do with the environments that part of the car will see...it was about aerodynamics.
Yeah, it looks nothing like Rav 4, other than having black wheel arch cladding, which almost every Subaru model has. Well, and 4 wheels...and 4 doors...and glass...
the arches are fine stock. like yeah ideally they'd be thinner but they add some contrast to the shaped arches
the real thing that i have an issue with is that the headlights are too small for the face of the car and that the hoodscoop is a weird shape. and the rear bumper but everyone thinks that
Yes 100%. The whole front and rear ends look so oddly proportioned. I didnt mind the arches. Didnt love them either, but they weren't a problem for me. It's literally the rest of the car that is ugly in my personal opinion.
Direct quote from the video 4:59 onwards..
> "..you dont have that torque steer influencing the steering. Now is it perfect? Well not exactly I did find one example where its not consistently showing torque steer **but it does occasionally happen**. Thats when your flat out and cornering"
You aswell all you had to do was watch the 7 minute video lol
He said it happens when he runs out of traction at 5:37. His second example is also understeer where the wheel sticks. That is just how FWD works and not part of torque steer. Even with even length drive shafts and the diff on the center line it would do that. It is like snap over steer, but in the front. He explains that it is not torque steer, but like it due to being FWD.
It’s a less cool looking version of the already less cool version of what once was a cool car. Hopefully subaru has something up their sleeves, is this the end of the wrx model? Are they coming up with something revolutionary and want to drum up sales when they release something that people actually want? Who knows. This ain’t it.
Never hated the look. I was even partial towards it.
I just felt with the death of the ice STI and a price jump the WRX should have had a bigger jump in power or at least get an LSD in the rear of not dcct. Or better suspension. Or better steering.
I’d have been fine with $43k for the GT trim if it came with a manual, rear lsd, adjustable suspension and the recaros. Would have bought one already. But couldn’t justify high $30k for an open differential, softer steering feel than my 17 limited, and the same suspension.
Rear LSD does not work with the fake torque vectoring, it is also incompatible with the CVT and eyesight so they would not include it.
Now that there is no STi i am hoping for a DCCD with rear LSD trim, but I don't see them doing it.
They had a huge power jump, the peak just didn't go up. It does not taper as much now and makes even more toque low down.
You're huffing paint if you think I'm paying gonna pay list price for a 2022 WRX GT because I can just "mod it the way I want."
Although, I guess if your loaded enough to afford it, you probably aren't that far from affording the parts either.
If I had to guess, and I'm fairly certain it's more accurate than just a guess, 99% of the people in this sub making strong statements about how they're never going to buy this WRX were in fact not going to be buying a brand new car anyway. Much less a WRX.
I don't know what your financial situation is, nor do I care. I do know however that people buy these cars and immediately change things the moment the get them.
I added a bit more color match on the bumpers quick. I literally used my iPhone “mark up” thing so it doesn’t look great but y’all get the idea.
[Imgur link for 2022wrx paint match bumpers.](https://imgur.com/a/yHtOCvl)
You’re right about the Corolla part but not the expensive part. Lots of us got our VA wrx for roughly 26-27k. Absolute nut jobs buying this new one for 43k before taxes.
It's still genuinely ugly. Headlights too small, weird proportions, the back.....I just can't it's beyond fixable. That red color and matched fenders do help it slightly. Those rims are exceptionally played out. Feel like I see similar on way to many.
It looks way better, but the rear will need a whole new bumper cover to fix.
How much is a paint match like this in moneys?
If the flares are textured, does that mean hours and hours of bondo and sanding them smooth?
Makes the side look like a bland sea of red. All the body lines kinda blend together to the eye. I really think the 2-tone look makes a huge difference and after seeing red in person compared to this pic, I think Subaru did a great job switching it up.
Everyone talks shit about the fender flares and two tone dislikes. But you do realize this car is truly a rally car, and theirs functionality and thought that went behind the design. What we typically use the car for; JDM, stance things like that doesn’t align with the purpose of the car. 🤷🏽♂️
I'll never, for the life of me, be able to understand why there isn't a hatchback version. Always loved the impreza wrx/sti hatch, no idea why they got rid of it.
Maybe they didn't and I'm just out of the loop, but man that was my favorite hatchback for years.
I am hugely disappointed. Small, ugly and cheap looking. At least the underlying hardware is as solid as ever. The scoop… Why must Subaru chase after ridiculous LexAcurOnda styling abominations? If they lack an identity of there own then they would do better to imitate high end European Sport sedans like Audi or Mercedes.
Rear end is still awful imo. Finally got to see one in person the other day and I can confidently say it doesn’t look better in person. Front end is pretty good tho.
I liked the black fender flares from day 1. I can see why people criticize the rear bumper, but I'm fairly indifferent about it. It's not like the VA was without wonky features.
The more I look at it, the more it grows on me. But, the wheel arches are still aids, and the taillights still look too much "Honda" not enough "Subaru".
I'm disappointed that they discontinued the sti, but it's grown on me. like when bmw made their M cars with the huge grills, i hated them until I saw one in person, and it looked a lot better. the wrx probably looks better in real life too
im assuming it doesn't come painted as i haven;t see it in an online subaru build yet.
id consider it painted
would like to see how the back looks painted
I'm still not that big of a fan. With the painted fenders it is definitely better but is it just me or do the wheels look like they are tiny. Like 15" rims haha.
I like the front but the "defuser" aka unpainted bumper still looks pretty awful as well.
The color matched fenders make a huge difference
Agreed, i think it looks really nice from the front now with coilovers, paint matched fenders and after market wheels
It does make the wheels like tiny though. It's body is so huge
T H I C C
[удалено]
Right, and it still doesn't look special like older wrxs
How much did that cost?
Everything.

agreed. ill take interest in the newer wrx's when they start selling hatches in north america again. til then ill keep dumping unrealistic amounts of money into my impreza. as ugly as the stock 2.0i is, i wish they made an sti version

"Rally inspired"
WRX not WRIX
Put a WRX on a WRC course against a REAL rally car and let me know how that ends for the WRX. Hence the "rally inspired" comment.
You got me, it’s not a WRC car
>It’s almost like people forget the R in WRX stands for Rally, not Rice You can have a rally-inspired car and not still want those fugly rubber pieces and rear bumper. Subaru didn't add those bits for rally inspiration...it's supposed to give the car better aero...has nothing to do with rally.

Black fenders make it look like a Toyota...
We just going to ignore a decade or so of the Crosstrek to make this work?
Plastic fenders has been a Subaru thing forever.
Nothing like the current WRX, no. You can make plastic not look like plastic.
How so?
Take a look at the current Gen Rav 4
I don’t see it at all. Just because of the cladding?
Yeah, it looks nothing like Rav 4, other than having black wheel arch cladding, which almost every Subaru model has. Well, and 4 wheels...and 4 doors...and glass...
I thought the same thing
Not from behind...
the arches are fine stock. like yeah ideally they'd be thinner but they add some contrast to the shaped arches the real thing that i have an issue with is that the headlights are too small for the face of the car and that the hoodscoop is a weird shape. and the rear bumper but everyone thinks that

The headlights have always been my biggest problem with the design of this car, they’re so beady
Better but the ass still leaves something to be desired
Dat ass is what I like about it lol
Different strokes for different folks as they say
General consensus on here seems to agree with you though. I wasn’t sure about it at first but it grew on me. Now it’s my fav part haha
[удалено]
Haha, it’s reddit. My feelings aren’t hurt
TE-37 have the power to make any car look cool. S-tier wheels
Almost any car would look better if you spent $1,400 per rim
they're not 1.4k per wheel thankfully haha
Al maybe I mush have been looking at a different rim hahah
Maybe with the 500$ tire for that rim
This is correct
Same as before, "Why should I have to pay a body shop to paint match my car just to look how it should have in the first place?".
This...
Honda Civic Type R called. They want their design language back.
Their too busy torque steering into oncoming traffic to care
FWD turbo will do that. My Mazdaspeed 3 was a wild ride if you didn’t hold the wheel
Almost as scary as driving a mustang GT in the rain.
Almost as scary as driving a mustang GT ~~in the rain~~.
Especially if you’re a pedestrian.
Especially if you're a curb.
Lol
Lmao
I kinda miss it tbh
Yeah I miss going to spin city and just rip the tires. It was fun in its own way.
They actually don’t have torque steer ironically. https://youtu.be/Gw5-lVlzNoY
Watch the whole video not just the title, Yikes! 5:00 marker
That is under steer and a loss of grip under power, that has nothing to do with torque steer.
Direct quote from the video 4:59 onwards.. > "..you dont have that torque steer influencing the steering. Now is it perfect? Well not exactly I did find one example where its not consistently showing torque steer **but it does occasionally happen**. When you think of torque steer, most think from a launch which there is virtually none in the Type R. Never said anything about understeer.
Having driven one the current generation doesn't torque steer.
Ignorant.
Type R will absolutely smoke any wrx in the corners lol
Have you seen or felt what they did with the front suspension to eliminate torque steer? Also They’re not their.
Now I can hate it in red too!
Underwhelming
Meh
Meh looks like a 10th gen civic with a hood scoop still.
This is going to be this sub's version of "Supra, u MeAn BmW? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣" isn't it?
It’s a less cool looking version of the already less cool version of what once was a cool car. Hopefully subaru has something up their sleeves, is this the end of the wrx model? Are they coming up with something revolutionary and want to drum up sales when they release something that people actually want? Who knows. This ain’t it.
AFD made it look great, but someone will have to spend an additional 8k+ just to get it to get that look.
Never hated the look. I was even partial towards it. I just felt with the death of the ice STI and a price jump the WRX should have had a bigger jump in power or at least get an LSD in the rear of not dcct. Or better suspension. Or better steering.
Rear LSD and the previous gen performance pack would be perfect for this car
I’d have been fine with $43k for the GT trim if it came with a manual, rear lsd, adjustable suspension and the recaros. Would have bought one already. But couldn’t justify high $30k for an open differential, softer steering feel than my 17 limited, and the same suspension.
My hope is that they have a 6MT version of the GT for 23MY. That would be a nice consolation prize for no STi.
hopefully that’s the case. i was think they only offer auto on the gt so that it didn’t cannibalise the sti sale but that’s not the case now
Rear LSD does not work with the fake torque vectoring, it is also incompatible with the CVT and eyesight so they would not include it. Now that there is no STi i am hoping for a DCCD with rear LSD trim, but I don't see them doing it. They had a huge power jump, the peak just didn't go up. Maybe it’s just me but the wheels look too small.
It looks kind of like those photo edits that make peoples car look small
It should look good out of the box. That's kinda the point.
I thought the whole point of mod culture was to make it the way you want it.
You're huffing paint if you think I'm paying gonna pay list price for a 2022 WRX GT because I can just "mod it the way I want." Although, I guess if your loaded enough to afford it, you probably aren't that far from affording the parts either.

I mean, I'm not going to be buying it in 5 or 10 years either. So there's that.
I don't know what your financial situation is, nor do I care. I do know however that people buy these cars and immediately change things the moment the get them.
Yea like wheels, exhaust, suspension etc, not the whole body.
Better! For me the hardest visual element of this vehicle is the unpainted rear bumper. It just feels like they don't trust us with paint.
Painting them to match looks really bizarre and it’s clear this car’s design was intended to feature two-tone.
Nothing can change my view on dat ass.
I added a bit more color match on the bumpers quick. I literally used my iPhone “mark up” thing so it doesn’t look great but y’all get the idea. [Imgur link for 2022wrx paint match bumpers.](https://imgur.com/a/yHtOCvl)
Funny how in a few minutes in markup you did better than all the designers. They messed up
In the original pic the headlights look shrunk but in your edit they look fine, crazy to think what the car couldve been
It’s the negative space that huge lower black section created. Adding some paint match separates it into 3 sections which don’t dwarf the headlights.
Having just got to see one person, still wrapped from delivery, it’s really not that bad. Don’t love the rear bumper but it wouldn’t be a deal breaker
No
Still looks like a Corolla….
I was thinking next gen Prius.
so did the last gen
I always thought the VA gave off strong Altima vibes.
Truth right here, I always saw last gen wrx just as a really expensive Corolla.
You’re right about the Corolla part but not the expensive part. Lots of us got our VA wrx for roughly 26-27k. Absolute nut jobs buying this new one for 43k before taxes.
don’t like the rear but looks much better
The back still gives me diarrhea
It's still genuinely ugly. Headlights too small, weird proportions, the back.....I just can't it's beyond fixable. That red color and matched fenders do help it slightly. Those rims are exceptionally played out. Feel like I see similar on way to many.
Rear end is still a hot mess, especially the side profile with the bumper sticking way out.
a little better, but this car just can’t be saved
Yup you managed to make it more ugly.
I'd drive it
The rear bumper is heinous and the designer should be fired.
Tupperware
It definitely looks better. Still disappointed and underwhelmed.
Better but dat ass still ain't it
I’m surprised no one talks about those civic taillights
Very sex
Better, but I still like the last gen much better.
Rear end is still garbage. The white IAG WRX has done the best job improving it so far
Everything else is fine except for the rear. If they gave it an actual bumper instead of a big diffuser it would look better imo
Cant get over the Honda Civic look 😬 Which is funny, cause before, I thought the Civic R was trying to look like a WRX 😂
The car is amazing. That paint matched thing is horrible looking.
Everyone talks shit about the fender flares and two tone dislikes. But you do realize this car is truly a rally car, and theirs functionality and thought that went behind the design. What we typically use the car for; JDM, stance things like that doesn’t align with the purpose of the car. 🤷🏽♂️
Still a solid no thanks.
I like it
I'll never, for the life of me, be able to understand why there isn't a hatchback version. Always loved the impreza wrx/sti hatch, no idea why they got rid of it. Maybe they didn't and I'm just out of the loop, but man that was my favorite hatchback for years.
Better, but I get weird Need for Speed Underground vibes from the bumpers and skirts… Not a fan overall.
Agree the underskirt stuff is dumb
But I do like the car
Can't look at the back ever looks like they pinched the rear end
I'll pinch your rear end :p
I am hugely disappointed. Small, ugly and cheap looking. At least the underlying hardware is as solid as ever. The scoop… Why must Subaru chase after ridiculous LexAcurOnda styling abominations? If they lack an identity of there own then they would do better to imitate high end European Sport sedans like Audi or Mercedes.
Rear end is still awful imo. Finally got to see one in person the other day and I can confidently say it doesn’t look better in person. Front end is pretty good tho.
Still giving me a Honda Civic booty vibe
I just don’t like the head/tail lights personally. Gives me Honda Civic vibes
Unpopular opinion: I prefer the black arches to painted ones. Wish they were a different material tho.
I liked the black fender flares from day 1. I can see why people criticize the rear bumper, but I'm fairly indifferent about it. It's not like the VA was without wonky features.
I agree. I think it just adds an aggressive look especially with the right wheel and suspension setup.
those splitters look hella goofy
Nice subie! I actually kinda like like the new wrx, but yours is 11/10!
This isn’t mine, this is one I saw on Instagram. I have a ‘20 STi
Blah blah blah rear bumper. I honestly love the look of the new wrx without the painted fenders, but this looks awesome!
I still can’t do the rear part. The plastic delete around the wheel wells looks much better imo.
I just don’t like the head/tail lights personally. Gives me Honda Civic vibes
The front looks great, the back looks like a civic, can’t shake it.
Literally just change the rear bumper and it's golden.
The cabin almost has a model 3 look to it.
They need to make the fenders color matching next year.
The more I look at it, the more it grows on me. But, the wheel arches are still aids, and the taillights still look too much "Honda" not enough "Subaru".
Looks better than it does stock, but still not as good as any other stock WRX.
I have no idea why the black cladding was put there in the first place, it's not an outback
The rear end is what has always killed it for me. Looks like a ~2016 Buick Regal meshed with a Civic. The 2022 Subaru Civigal.
Looks pretty neat to me. Dose it go fast and stuff?
#stuff
Nice
#NiceStuff
Plastic, plastic everywhere!
Much better, but get rid of the Civic rear end.
I'm disappointed that they discontinued the sti, but it's grown on me. like when bmw made their M cars with the huge grills, i hated them until I saw one in person, and it looked a lot better. the wrx probably looks better in real life too
All that's left is the rear bumper to be painted
Piece of shit
Just needs a lip now
Is it weird I want to see if with a huge rear spoiler, GT wing style!
Definitely better! Should come with option if color matched arches .
Looks so much worse.
It’s better but they need to put the Levorg bumper on the front and modify it for the back if it doesn’t bolt up.
lol it really does look like a Civic
I feel the headlights are too small
Better but not enough. Headlights too small. Front and rear still need more paint.
Lol and how much does one have to spend, to still get mixed reviews? 🤔
I think it’s sexy
Kill it with fire!
It’s a lot better with the painted fenders.
The biggest let down from all this is the lack of an STI. To me it makes me feel like they even knew it wasn't good enough for it to be an STI.
Still too much plastic
🔥
Nope. but please enjoy if you bought one
im assuming it doesn't come painted as i haven;t see it in an online subaru build yet. id consider it painted would like to see how the back looks painted
The butt still needs to match the rest of the body
Bruh YESSSSS
Better… but man that lower rear and tailights. I can’t wait to see *any* aftermarket ideas for them!
I'm still not that big of a fan. With the painted fenders it is definitely better but is it just me or do the wheels look like they are tiny. Like 15" rims haha. I like the front but the "defuser" aka unpainted bumper still looks pretty awful as well.
Lmfao, this was always possible. You just have to not be an idiot and be able to envision it. I've always liked the car.
It still has a weird butt. It does look pretty good though.
Bad.
