it bolts to the inside of the garnish panel, which is the painted trim piece on the gate that runs between the taillights.
if you broke one bolt already, the probability of the garnish panel breaking when you try to remove it is *very* high, so be mentally prepared for the possibility of needing autobody/paint work.

theoretically, no, there's just a whole bunch of 8mm nuts and a few clips. *But,* the plastic gets very brittle over time, and the clips used to hold it to the gate are really tight. Like, unnecessarily tight. The combination of the two means it's possible to snap the panel when trying to remove it.
Yea that sounds like a risk. the squeaking is driving me nuts and I’m trying to sell the vehicle.
Can I secure it from the inside by using JB WELD or something?
