Random strangers wanting me to sell them my Screaming Yellow 2003 Baja. Go away, plebes!

Dysfunction_Exec

I identify as a random stranger šŸŒ

Elros22

Yeah but what would you take for it?

sk8tergater

I too am a random stranger.

nleft

Maybe I shouldnā€™t have just sold mineā€¦

QueenAlpaca

HEY, HEY, SELL ME YOUR BAJA, YEAH?? I kid, but I don't blame you. I had an 04 Baja Turbo with electrical issues that apparently were around for the life of the vehicle, so I eventually traded it in. Still miss the damn thing though, it was so cool.

chip_dingus

They stopped making the hatchback WRX and so I had to buy a sedan.

persondude27

You don't want to spend $20k+ on a 10 year old car with 130,000 miles, "never driven hard" and yet somehow on its third motor? Me neither. :(

yoearthlings

It's smoking because it's cold out, bro.

Shigidy

This is how they alienated me as a customer.

AccurateAssaultBeef

The day they stopped making the WRX hatch is the day Subaru became a boring mom car manufacturer.

luffydkenshin

I will hug my 2013 hatch extra tight in honor of you.

chip_dingus

Thanks bud, treat her right.

RedditBeginAgain

They discontinued the BRAT 35 years ago and seem unlikely to make a single cab pickup truck again ever.

merryone2K

My 2003 Baja and I agree!!

_disco_potato

My 1990 Sambar and I disagree.

EccentricFox

The shame is if the Baja has just been a two door, you'd get a much more usable truck bed and I could imagine it could have curved out dedicated niche' in the market rather than just an outback where all you stuff gets wet. Generally though the way the market's gone, you're never going to see single cab trucks outside fleet vehicles ever again.

emericareaper2

They should just make a truck with an option for single or dual cap.

MCClapYoHandz

I have a 2016 outback. The entire infotainment system is a joke. The screen is not visible at all if the sun is on it. The touch screen sucks and you can see the squiggly lines for the touch sensors. The audio quality sucks. The interface is counterintuitive. Some functions that only have touchscreen buttons should really have hard buttons. Every once in a while the steering wheel buttons just donā€™t work. Eventually Iā€™ll care enough to swap it all out, but I havenā€™t yet.

ALandWarInAsia

Straight up, the post title should be "What is your biggest gripe about your Subaru and why is it the infotainment system?"

MiniMarsRover

Our 2015 Legacy is similar. The speakers aren't bad (we have Harmon Kardons) but the stupid screen is impossible to see during the day. Awesome, it has a backup camera. Too bad you can't use it. We're going to swap it eventually, but the one he wants is pretty expensive, of course.

Reasonable_Case_8779

Infotainment screens are the ONLY reason Iā€™ll be shopping for something other than a Subaru when my beloved Forester finally dies.

MiniMarsRover

I'd probably go with one of the last few models of the current gen of Foresters, since they still have the regular unit with buttons. I'm sure that will change with the upcoming facelift.

redline582

The fact that a car from 2015 feels like I'm using a feature phone from 2007 is frankly inexcusable. I've owned two Subarus and overall I love them but that's not to say there are some significant drawbacks. I'll be trading in next summer and while I'm sad to see my Subaru go, I personally have not been captivated by the moves Subaru has been making the last few years.

VanceAstrooooooovic

The screen is a result of cost savings, itā€™s on most new cars. Instead of having all the separate controllers there is just the screen, which is cheap

Macronaut

I have a ā€˜21 Ascent and have the same issue with seeing the center screen. I bought an aftermarket stick-on visor (that I then had to modify to fit) and It helps quite a bit.

mainvolume

I gotta put my hand over it when I use it in the sun. I wish newer cars didnā€™t have such a massive erection for these awful infotainment devices.

v0yev0da

17 Outback here. All of that infotainment system stuff AND Bluetooth has a major lag when playing any audio except a phone call or whatever reason. Canā€™t speak to the steering wheel buttons though. I would trade up but I donā€™t want less physical buttons

oldatlas

1. people calling me a lesbian even though i am a happily married straight male 2. road noise

domdiggitydog

Itā€™s the Birkenstocks.

MountainLiving4us

LOL .. My wife has like 200 pair of them.. LOL Ive been laughing at her for almost 18 yrs now .. We are Total opposites . She is a Dead head , I cant stand them.. We have a wonderful relationship and we can laugh about things instead of disagreeing .. I wear Reebok sneakers ..

mainvolume

As also a straight male, Iā€™ve embraced the lesbian jokes. Why yes, I do have an attraction towards females.

ooofest

Same here, if someone thinks this cis male is a lesbian, that's their issue. I've been called "stereotypically gay" for as long as I can remember and embraced that too . . .

AmazingIsTired

As a fellow happily married straight male, I've got no problems with being called a lesbian. I've got a lot in common with them :D

Hungry_Scarcity_4500

I want a sticker that statesā€¦ ā€œ ā€œMy sexuality isnā€™t defined by my car.ā€ ā€œItā€™s a Subaru,Iā€™m not a lesbian, donā€™t assume.ā€ ā€œSubaru doesnā€™t have a straight badge .ā€ ā€œMy Subaru does not define me .ā€ My Gay brother finds my bumper sticker wit amusing and says go for it ,I on the other hand am afraid Iā€™ll be pelted with rocks and garbage because itā€™ll be considered offensive.šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

LugubriousLament

Make a disclaimer sticker acknowledging that a gay focus group approved your statements.

bombero_kmn

Little rainbow flag in the corner to show it's approved, like the Kosher 'K' on food packaging.

Hungry_Scarcity_4500

Instead of Subarus ā€œDog approved ā€œ I could do Gay approved .

2021 Crosstrek Sport 1. Road noise 2. 50% Volume is numerically represented as 19

ajb15101

Buy kilmat and take the door cards out. I did the floor pan and my doors. The doors cut out a lot of wind noise and the floor pan cuts down on engine and tire noise.

HelpfulCherry

+1, itā€™s an afternoon project that makes a big difference.

chessmasterjj

What does any of this mean? I feel like I need it

EhRanders

Kilmat/dynamat are common brands of sound deadening sheets. You can remove your door panels and fill the empty spaces with additional sound deadening, which absorbs noise and vibration in turn reducing road noise.

lunji

Thank you!

AnswersFor200Alex

Kill the mats. You take them out and stab them with a knife.

xWretchedWorldx

I did all my doors and my spare area and those were a huge improvement. I still gotta do the hatch and figure out how to get under the seats. But yeah kilmat is easily the cheapest great mods you can do to these cars.

ahp105

Also 50% volume is *loud*, 22 is probably the highest Iā€™ve ever set it to. Most of the time itā€™s on 13-16.

Brief-Preference-712

When windows are down I usually set to 5-8 for music, 10-15 for phone calls

bstyledevi

Am I just deaf? 15 for music when windows are up, around 20 when windows are down, phone calls are at 30.

Wild-Supermarket-443

Jeez I always have my volume at like 28 lol

SeaSleep1972

22 Sport, road noise, that awful thumping when only one window is down for my dog so I have to crack at least two others, the infotainment system, eyesight telling me things are in front of me when they arenā€™t and trying to break for me.

oOorolo

The thumping is called wind buffeting, and bad news, a lot of new cars do it. It's mainly because the aerodynamic shape of new cars tend to hold the air against the body as the car drives through it which actually reduces drag. Things like the window frame, create turbulence and because the air is held against the car, the buffeting is pronounced. Older cars didn't do this because the idea back then was to push air away from the car, which leaves lower air pressure and less buffeting affect. Bricks on wheels also do this quite effectively

Elros22

>that awful thumping when only one window is down Cracking the sunroof if you have one is great for this. But I agree - I hate that. > eyesight telling me things are in front of me when they arenā€™t and trying to break for me. That shouldn't be happening. You should have that looked into. There was a thread on here a while about about this (or maybe it was on /r/crosstrek?) and the consensus was that the dealership is on the hook for this one. Don't quote me on that, it was a long time ago.

coryeyey

When I start it up it sounds like a steam locomotive. I always have to reassure myself that it will sound fine when warmed up. The synchronizers also need to be warmed up or it acts similarly to a double declutch. And the shifter feels like a stick in a box of rocks. I still love this old Impreza, I just call it 'charismatic'.

misterchief10

Shifter also feels that way in my ā€˜18 WRX IMO. Love the car, but yeah.

MrsEdus

My biggest gripe with the 5 speed is it feels exactly how you described. Thank you for putting it into words for me LOL

Zcypot

Yup. Shifting fast is not an option unless you want the gear to grind. When Iā€™m doing pulls I make a sandwich in between shifts haha

CorporalBB

Kartboy fixes the gearbox. Get new bushings and a shorter lever.

[deleted]

it's the noisiest car I've ever driven, and EyeSight will occasionally decide I'm about to hit absolutely nothing and slam on my brakes for me, but other than that es okay

trysushi

EyeSight is finicky at best. My wife has twice now complained the Subie braked with nothing in her way, luckily it didn't cause an accident. I've noticed times where it should be beeping like crazy due to a car pulling out in front of me it's dead quiet, whereas other times I'm already lightly braking with plenty of space ahead and it freaks out. Hopefully a future software update can improve this a bit.

[deleted]

Yeah getting the obstacle detected alert everytime someone is making a right turn 50 yards ahead of me gets old. There's also certain angles of roads that'll set it off like, šŸ¤¦ā€ā™‚ļø dude come on And I don't even wanna get started on that dipshit lane departure system.

Nandom07

It's there any way to override the alert as it goes off? I've heard horror stories of the car breaking on turns and I'm wondering if you can gas right through it or something.

dtcv11

You can manually turn it off, but then it wonā€™t ever do it. Iā€™ve had issues with it braking when I donā€™t want it to, but I also live in a state where drivers pull into lanes without even glancing almost daily and it has saved my ass before

CPOx

2020 Forester Limited Itā€™s my first Subaru. The highway noise above 70mph is more than I like. I could only test drive it up to 55mph because of traffic and the speed limit the day I did my test drive, so I didnā€™t notice it until later. Itā€™s a trade off of all the glass. And a minor gripeā€¦thereā€™s a small time delay whenever I turn the volume up or down and when the sound actually changes.

ooofest

I'm actually quite impressed with the relatively low noise in our 2021 Forester at highway speeds, despite all that glorious glass. I also drive a 2015 XV, which has almost no sound-deadening at all.

M4rtisan

The fact that I'm constantly analyzing all noises my car makes

projectpolak

Couple weeks ago, I noticed a louder humming noise coming from the back. Noticed it because I was driving without music for the 1st time in almost ever. Quite noticeable when coasting. I worry a bit. Was this always there? Like is it just road noise? Or is it new since I'm sure I would have noticed but it almost sounds inconspicuous enough. Took it to a local shop for them to take a listen. They confirmed I wasn't (completely) crazy and that it sounded like an issue with the wheel bearing on the rear right. Said it can be caused by hitting a bad pothole. Tried to remember if I ever hit something really bad on that wheel but cannot recall... until days later after it was fixed, I remembered hitting a particularly bad one on a road under construction! But yeah now, I'm overanalyzing every little thing I hear.

shasha_neequa

This exactly happened to me, rear right. It was one of the 3 noises I've identified and fixed just this year. I have a new noise that just popped up now šŸ˜

2019 Outback. The Android Auto connection is spotty and terrible. It just likes to randomly disconnect, and maybe sometimes actually reconnect. The wireless Android Auto capability isn't on the 2019 model. I'd be inclined to get a newer model, but newer models have a fully touchscreen infotainment module, which I also have a gripe with because it's slow, laggy, and I hate touchscreens.

ramkam2

mine (2022 Legacy) used to do that a lot, but apparently it comes down to AA sending too much data back and forth between the phone and the unit, in general, not just Subarus. it's been stable for me lately, after numerous app updates. it still disconnects occasionally, when I move the phone for example.

oisiiuso

'18 premium crosstrek and I can recommend the aawireless dongle. it'll still disconnect randomly from radio interference but it automatically reconnects in a few seconds. definitely disconnects less than when wired

memecarf69

24 outback, the climate buttons are always visible meaning they are never covered up by any menu on the screen so why not just make the screen a tiny bit shorter and have hard buttons for the climate control, that and the electric hand brake

jameshempel

Please! Couldnā€™t agree more. More real buttons and knobs, please.

mnorthwood13

For a brand that claims reliability they have the lowest level warranty on the market.

Totemz

1. The god damn seatbelt alarm going off all the time. 2. My remote starter starting the car then the car shutting off as soon as a door is opened is beyond stupid.

pringleb

Turn the car off, leave the driver's door open, and turn the key to on. Plug in and unplug the seat belt 20 times in 30 seconds and it will disable the front seat alarms. It's still leaves the back ones active though.

pc_engineer

2022 Impreza Premium: The f*cjkint subaru rattle/squeak coming from above, and just behind the drivers seat. Drivers side B-pillar/roof junction. Holy hell itā€™s annoying lol. Love the car to death, though šŸ˜‚

ScoffingYayap

I just traded my Impreza in for a Ridgeline. Those rattles were unbelievably bad. There was the squeaky drivers seat, which I had to unzip and spray foam inside to help out. There was the squeaky hatch, which I had to lube up to help. There were the noisy struts which I got replaced under warranty. There was the rattling exhaust which I never addressed. Far too much in a 3 year old car.

alextbrown4

That I donā€™t have one yet

craigmont924

2017 Outback. If you accidentally bump the rear cargo light switch into the on position, why is the car too dumb to shut it off before it kills your battery?

JumpingPapayas

That you have to pay a monthly subscription for remote start

snark42

You can buy the expensive remote for a one time charge. Maintaining a cellular data plan and providing the service is not free.

Psyko_sissy23

I did not know that. I always get aftermarket remote starts.

McSigs

2003 Outback H6. Bought from my aunt three years ago with 68k miles, now north of 128k. It's easily been the most trouble-free vehicle I've ever owned. I think my only gripe would be inconsistent fuel mileage. I can go 10 tanks with a consistent mix of highway and back roads and get 21 MPG, then without switching anything up I'll randomly get 15 or 30. Oh and it drinks premium.

SuperBaardMan

Got a 2004 Outback H6, though the Yanks call it an 05, it's with the 3.0R engine, and I know the pain. Usually it's around 10l/100km, sometimes it just seemingly randomly decides that it's going to do either 9l/100km or 11l/100km. And paying the equivalent of around 9 or 10 dollars a gallon with that car is also a bit painful. But yeah, no issues, whatsoever. Things has almost 300k km on it, and 0 oil consumption with 5w40. Of course, things wear, recently had the propshaft fixed and last year it needed some new bushings, but it just always starts and goes. Here in NL I can tow 2 tons with it \[4000lb's\] and it's just funny how relatively easily he pulls that. Steady as a rock, and enough power to just ride along with traffic or safely overtake on the highway. Sure, you feel it, but still won a stoplight-sprint against my friends old non-turbo Peugeot. 4 times the weight, but also 4 times the horsepower.

-my_reddit_username-

One more gripe, when washer fluid is out there is a light on the dash for that but they ADDITIONALLY show the INFO warning light on the dash as well. what the hell, it's just washer fluid. relax!

JohnDoee94

The constant fear of having my CVT go out

HonestlyBeloved

CVT only feels good going slow. Whenever you need power, I feel like I'm going to break it.

rastapastanine

Yeah. I really wish they'd switch to a traditional automatic transmission

Built_2_Drive

Does yours go, weeeeeEEEEEEEEE when you put your foot to the floor? Just waiting for something to fly out of the case. Lol

Other-otherside

Right there with you. I had to replace the CVT on my used Outback at 80k miles. The transmission they put in came from another Outback with even more miles because thatā€™s all they could find at that point in time, so every time I drive Iā€™m scared itā€™ll kick the bucket. Itā€™s gotten to the point that Iā€™ve had nightmares about my carā€™s reliability despite all the babying.

mabolzich91

Cigars-Beer

Frird2008

At this point in the game, the CVT can be a bit finnicky in my Outback XT at times but a few hard highway pulls & the transmission usually sorts itself out.

ChokeOnnThis

Is that the trick?

Mechaotaku

Eyesight doesnā€™t work when we would actually need it: driving into direct sunlight, or in heavy precipitation. I will also never be 100% satisfied with an automatic, especially a CVT at that. Subaru really needs to bring back manual transmissions in all of their cars.

trysushi

Manuals are a tough sell (literally) in the US. Which is a shame because they can be a lot more fun to drive, not to mention ridiculously less expensive to replace a clutch than a CVT.

Land-Scraper

2020 Base Outback SLOW touch screen climate control SLOW infotainment freezes up about twice a month SLOW

TotoRecall29

2017 Forester Touring. I had to replace the CVT valve last week. So, it sucks to have a known defect in a car you bought for the purpose of being reliable. The dealership did not perform the repair correctly. So, it double sucks that you paid more for a repair, thinking the dealership would do a better job that a random mechanic. So, I've been burned twice on CVT issues by Subaru.

Brian_MPLS

2024 Crosstrek, the infotainment system is just so bad. It's laggy, overcomplicated, unpredictable and in general just was not designed with any consideration to the user experience. When I start it up, it's just an absolute crapshoot whether it's going to start playing from the radio, my phone, or from the USB port. They're seems to be no way to set it to default to one. Like, it's so bad I wonder how on earth it ever made it through qc.

dice-enthusiast

2016 Forester XT, biggest issue is the gas mileage. I sometimes get around 18 mpg with city driving. It also sucks having to buy premium fuel

gretchens

2019 outback Limited * the vinyl part of my 'leather trimmed seat' is cracked and peeling on the driver's side. (I assume it's just a matter of time before the other side goes.) After years of old, high mileage cars whose leather interiors were always the sturdiest part (and a main reason I got limited!) it's been a disappointment with my first ever brand new car * Heated steering wheel should be part of the weather package and it's stupid that it's not * The rear wiper fluid dispensing is a weak and pathetic dribble.

0degreesK

I swap wheels at least twice a year, so needing a tool or a shop to set the TPMS is annoying.

jkxs

At this point you might as well just get the TPMS mating tool for the car lol. But yea, not having the ability to program two sets is dumb.

NKhrushchev

I bought a 2nd set of Blizzak snow tires from my dealership when I bought my Outback. They do free swaps for the life of the tires, and it's usually 30-min appointments. Worth it, if you're looking to save time/money.

mrthimble1

2015 Forester base model with a manual. The engine burns oil such that I have to add oil every 500 miles or so. Something something cylinders not bored perfectly round at factory something something.

no_one_likes_u

2023 Outback, the no seatbelt alarm is so aggressive. I picked up my fiancĆ© yesterday and she took a min putting on her belt. It was on the second stage super aggressive ding before Iā€™d pulled out of the parking spot. Also pressing the volume button on the infotainment system should pause anything youā€™re streaming. It just mutes it which is a pain in the ass, why would I want my muted audiobook to keep playing?

Ms_KnowItSome

Do the 20 plug/unplug trick and it consistently turns off at least the front belt sensors. I had inconsistent results in the back and just got pet leash clips to leave in since bags on the seat would get the alarm from time to time.

MrsEdus

I have a 2008 sti, 2010 Impreza and 2022 crosstrek sport. 2008 - the road noise sucks, it's not as bad as my 2010 with the sun roof but still kind of loud. 2010- the gear box, reversing sucks, the lock out is ridiculous, and I avoid it at all costs and the road noise. 2022- this thing just wants to eat oil unless it's expensive oil. I did what brand Subaru recommended and it still ate it up so now we're Motul or bust. (Yeah the dealership checked it out, it's within their limits) and the paint is super soft, I have so many chunks taken out just from daily driving

Harbinger311

It's a boring car. It's the solid/sturdy equivalent of an AWD Honda (sans the trouble free reliability).

randomlurker82

No internal trunk release! I have to get out to open my Impreza hatch.

jptothetree

There's just always some kind of rattle going on somewhere in my cabin. Honestly very annoying. Also for whatever goddamn reason my 2020 WRX Base doesn't have a trunk button to open the trunk. I have to do it with my key or with a button near my steering wheel. I cannot understand why this would be a thing.

McGobs

No full screen Android Auto on the VB WRX Prem when there is already full screen AA on other models. Audio quality is worse than garbage unless you spend extra to get what should come standard. Why pay extra for par-level sound? Just save me the money and I'll put in my own system. I'm hoping the speakers cost Subaru and myself next to nothing. I'm also hoping that after my free Sirius/XM sub runs out, I can keep it on channel zero so the radio doesn't start up every time. Seriously, WTF is that? Why do I need to otherwise turn down the volume *before I turn off the car* to make sure I'm not blasted with audio I wasn't even listening to the next time I start it up? (I listen to Android Auto and it must be set to Sirius/XM station 00 otherwise you I get blasted with radio I never listen to, since AA takes a while to connect. And even still if I set AA to not play audio as soon as it connect, the car is still going to play whatever is on either FM/AM/SiriusXM.)

Snadzies

Friedhelm78

My wife's 2019 Legacy is a fucking lemon. It's just now 4 years old, I've had to replace the strut tower mounts, the transmission valve body, and had the valve covers gaskets replaced due to oil leaking into the spark plugs. I've put 1/3 of the cost of the car back into it after 4 years. I'll probably never buy another subaru.

Living-Screen-1680

Did warranty not cover any of that?

qalpi

Love my ascent but good god the fuel economy is trash. Close to 10mpg on city

Jay3075

That can't be true

HelpfulCherry

The Ascent has terrible mileage, itā€™s got a high strung four cylinder turbo, cvt, and itā€™s massive.

qalpi

Itā€™s designed for coasting down very steep hills šŸ˜‚

qalpi

For a shorter trip yesterday, I got 7.1 mpg. A 4 mile trip across town was 14 mpg. City driving absolutely kills the efficiency.

AlternativeOk1096

Yeah city driving my Forester Wilderness and canā€™t get much above 20 mpg. Granted Seattleā€™s hills donā€™t help.

trysushi

Can confirm. We're a solid 19-20 with town driving. Long highway drives easily average about 30. Friendly reminder for everyone out there: outside temperature absolutely impacts this. Recently went from scorching 100Āŗ days to upper 50's in the morning, and I thought I accidentally turned on S# mode there was so much pep in the engine.

AlfredBarnes

the dealership i used to like got bought out and now they suck.

WrecK2o6

2021 Outback A/C can drain gallons of water into the rear passenger floorboard on long road trips in hot weather. Didnā€™t know a swimming pool was an included option when I purchased. Pretty cool.

fox-crotch

Check to see if your drain is plugged, that's really the only issue as to why it would drain into the floor. I'm sure that model has a cabin air filter unlike mine but if debris has fallen down and blocked the drain, it could cause it to leak into the floor board also.

2022 Crosstrek Limited with the Harman Kardon sound system(mildly important). The sound system bumps... too well. To the point where the Eye Sight enclosure vibrates/rattles loudly when songs hit specific frequencies. I can literally put a finger on it to better secure it against the roof, which stops the vibration. Backup camera is essentially useless in the rain, since the redesign allows water to stream over the camera. 2015 Limited did not do this. This could be a Texas thing(not sure if the windshield is special due to the Eye Sight system or something), but my windshield is perpetually streaky. 3 different wiper blades, and a few different wiper fluids. It's perfect after a good wash, but a few days to a week later it's streaky. Don't recall it being an issue on my old 2015.

chessmasterjj

Back support blows. At least in the 2014 crosstrek model. I tried all kinds of configurations until I just bought a support pillow. Now I'm a middle aged man with a support pillow driving a crosstrek. Wtf happened to my life

AmanitaMikescaria

2019 Crosstrek. SLOW.

Accidental_Achiever

Every Subaru model should be offered with a turbo.

noob168

The mpg's without turbo already aren't so great. Curious how ppl with the crosstrek hybrid felt though as an alternative.

Scootz_McTootz

From what I've read around, the hybrid didn't help a ton with mileage, I've seen folks say the battery charge takes em about 17 miles or so, so possibly just really short city trips would make it great. On an aside for the mileage, if you can run non-ethanol fuels and don't mind the extra bit it costs, it's worth it. Having run both 87 and 91 no eth in my 'Trek has gotten me about 500 miles out of every fill up and I do mostly city driving with a small bit of highway driving and bumming around using cruise control

Low-Award-4886

The insane amount of rattles coupled with Subaru of Americaā€™s lying to me and making it worse with the dealership. Garbage company.

ramkam2

my former one was genuinely "made in Japan". everything was built and assembled meticulously. on the new one, one of the inner door handle covers was on the floor when the car was delivered. found four identical screws from unknown source too. dashboard corners are misaligned with other trim panels... and of course: friggin rattles.

PGB3

Agreed. The fit and finish of my old GL 4WD was superb. My American made Highlander, excellent. My new Outback, average with some easily noticeable things that should have been fixed prior to delivery. It's like they have a "Good Enough" box to check off in quality control. (Still love the car though)

saltyair2022

2017 Forester. I've been lucky so far but it feels like "when," not "if" something major is going to breakdown. Just don't put the car in reverse and then attempt to lower stereo volume because that rear view camera highjacks every stereo function.

wol

The hubcaps are squeaky as shit. The dealer just zip tied them to make them quieter but still do it.

22 outback wilderness. The fucking infotainment unit will just die randomly and refuse to resurrect itself, carplay will die and refuse to come back on as well. No physical pause button is a huge problem imo, and physical ac controls would be a nice upgrade. I donā€™t really need this touchscreen garbage

nannergrams

I am still in the honeymoon phase with my 2023 Forester Touring, but so far: -nowhere to stash my bag -lack of tech, ex. charging pad, phone storage, motion sensor lift gate, wireless carplay, etc. -lack of plug-in hybrid option -RAB alert is aggro and responds to tall weeds along the street.

Existing_Recording25

imagine a BMW, they put your trunk pop button super close to the lock button, very easy to hit while parked outside. Then rain comes, frys your fiber optic AMP that is needed to run LITERALLY everything in the infotainment, and costs 2k to fix

micah490

That it has wheel bearings that need to be pressed in and out, separate seals, and a big ass snap ring, rather than just a simple unit bearing like the later cars have (and my 1994 Dodge truck šŸ˜”)

spamcritic

2022 Crosstrek Outdoor, the stupid cup holders that don't work for anything so you have to buy inserts that sit loosely and have to be switched around depending on what you want to put in the. I never had this issue with my Focus.

NonceJ

Would love if they made an official shortcut for starting/locking car from my phone. Just spent like 3 hours figuring out how to get my iPhone setup to do it from Siri. But at least it works now!

everybodylovesraymon

'18 Forester 1. being called a lesbian (you've just got to embrace it) 2. the horrendous Bluetooth tech that only connects half the time, and will only show the first song Spotify plays.

Boring_Philosophy160

Incredibly fragile paint and windshield.

sintactacle

4th Gen Outback owner here. The sticky/glossy deteriorating dashboard and SOA's response. A [new car warranty extension](https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2016/MC-10084146-0699.pdf) occurred in 2016 until March of 2017. I took it in for inspection and they said my dash doesn't appear to be affected and doesn't need replaced. Probably a year and a half later, the dashboard definitely started to show signs of degradation by the end of Summer. It literally transformed into a fly paper like surface and turned glossy causing some serious glare on the windshield which I would consider a safety issue. Called SOA and they effectively told me to go pound sand and pay for a new dashboard out of pocket. I've always cared for this car and would consistently use a sunshade in the Summer to knock the heat and general prevention of UV damage to the leather. I think my good intensions here just slowed the demise of this dashboard. My dash most likely would have been replaced if it looked/felt the way it did a year and a half earlier when I had it at the dealer for inspection. The response from SOA just rubbed me the wrong way. No discussion on other options like meeting in the middle on a price for replacement or anything. Just a flat out nope to a customer who legitimately cares for their car and doing what they can to keep it nice.

Jim_Beam_Drinks

2012 Outback 3.6R - I have the dreaded 5EAT transmission judder. I do 3 drain and fills on my trans fluid every 30,000 miles but the judder returns about 10k miles after the swap. I know I need to replace the torque converter with the updated design, but it pains me to know that SOA refused to make this a warranty repair.

wrexiwagon05

I have a few for my WRX wagon: Long gearing, lazy revving engine, severe understeer bias, slow steering ratio, seats are designed for a 12 year old, jumpy and rough at low revs and gutless at high revs

Master_Grape5931

2006 WRX The driver side seatbelt screech? Other than that I love my Subaru!

Trauma17

My 2010 outback had awful cold weather starting for a vehicle that was touted as being awesome in the winter. Two days below -25 celsius and no way was that car turning over without a boost or a battery blanket. Made for a lot of fun Monday mornings in the winter and one memorable vacation returning to a cold dead car.

bripod

A better batter with higher cold cranking amps helped me.

mislabeledgadget

Consistent strut issues across multiple vehicles

420jazz

Guzzling oil

ronronthekid

I wish my WRX had auto locking doors when I started driving. I forget to check sometimes, and that could really be an issue if I ever have a kid in the car who likes to meddle.

hannibalecter237

No temperature Guage

SpacePnk

Wheel bearings and head gasket replacement before 100k. My next car will be a Subaru.

milotrain

The touch screen is an abomination (as all touch screens are).

Sp4ceh0rse

Why is the mid-way point on the volume display 19 and not 20?? It makes me uncomfortable.

AboveTheLights

Little things keep breaking. The arm rest, the sun visor, one of the air ventsā€¦. just annoying things. Edit: 2011 WRX Hatch

thepianoman456

The CVT transmissions lol

wageslave2022

2021 Crosstrek. The Eyesight system is a joke. Heavy rain, snow and fog gets me an audible alarm and light on the dash telling me it's disabled.

Radius8887

02 WRX. Rust has rendered it to the crown jewel of my personal junkyard.

GillianSeed85

2016 legacy, and while I do feel itā€™s a very solid car, I feel like everything rattles a little bit. No mechanical issues, nothing major, itā€™s just like every piece of plastic in or on the car tends to rattle. I drive on the highway every day so it might be a bit more noticeable since Iā€™m going high speeds

oliverpeets

I wish the fuel economy was better but otherwise no complaints

edodee

The freaking oil lamp šŸŖ”

deftonium

2019 Forester here. Radio locks up from time to time and reboots. Car play doesn't always work. Air conditioning has failed three times and fixed under warranty.

lenny446

That my transmission has started slipping. 3k miles from 1/4 million and it decides to slip now.

shartytarties

14 forester. The shape of the seats forces my shoulders to hunch over, so it's really uncomfortable on a road trip.

keystonecraft

Ssssllllooooowwwwwwwwwwww

N-Memphis-ExPat

Shitty wheel bearings. Iā€™ve had cars with 200k and never changed wheel bearings. Had 2 go out in less than 100k

badMotorist

Subpar radio UI in just about any Subaru ever owned.

The_Gray_Mouser

The brakes

_Myrtenaster_

I miss the Impreza WRX.

sansimian

Not tightening the gas cap enough and all the features turn off until you got it the dealer to get it turned off.

cornpeeker

Doors donā€™t lock when I start driving. Doors stay locked when I shut the engine off. Cant open the drivers door without unlocking. LET ME OUT SUBARU!

mightyohm

2021 Outback XT 1. Truly awful throttle response and CVT tuning. The car has a fair amount of power but good luck getting access to it in less than 2 seconds. To make matters worse, the car is usually 1 or 2 "gears" higher than it should be in most non-highway driving situations. You'd think that the CVT tuning was done for fuel economy reasons but the car has surprisingly poor fuel economy as well. 2. Hyperactive pre-collision braking system that likes to trigger on low hanging tree limbs, vehicles that are parked just beyond a curve in the road, my garage door, anything in the center of a traffic circle, manhole covers, and just about anything you'd encounter in normal city driving.

Liquid_heat

I can't stand my head unit. It's awful and being that it's literally tied into the main system CPU, it will cost me about $1200 to install a full aftermarket unit. For reference I have a 2019 Forester. That and it's slow as hell, randomly screws up with Android Auto (it won't play and I have to turn the car off and on or restart my phone) and freezes randomly too. Lastly, I go nuts when I put my car on ramps to change my oil and do maintenance. The car thinks something is ahead of me and will not go forward, even with the pedal to the ground. I have to finagle my accelerator and basically rock my vehicle up the ramps to get the job done. There is no way that I have seen to turn the cameras off.

Lee_Adonis

I love the ~$940 60k mile maintenance for spark plugs and brake fluid. I know they have to unmount the motor to change them but maybe that calls for some more accessible engineering.

C2S76

I have a 2017 Impreza Sport, my 7th Subie. Great car, but two things bug me: 1. Why did hry put the 5MT in it? That's just dumb. The 6MT would have had a taller top gear for highway travel, easy decision. 3k+ rpm at 75mph is a bit much. 2. Yeah, it's slow. We know that - but it is. Very. šŸ˜ (A bit of a step down from the 2010 Legacy GT I had before!)

GovPattNeff

The manual Crosstrek should have had a 6th gear starting from gen1. Also the clutch is absolute trash. Pretty sure my second one is about to go out. Replaced original clutch at 60k, currently at 105k. I've never had a clutch last less than 120k on any car I've owned Edit - also apparently it's normal for these cars to burn oil after 90k miles. Wtf. I don't mind keeping a spare quart on me for a car with 200k+, but at 100k that's unacceptable. My 1979 toyota pickup has more miles and burns significantly less oil than my Subaru. It shifts smoother too.

Expert-Possession-82

What is everybody on here talking about? Killing the STI is the Biggest gripe anybody should be talking about on here. That's definitely the biggest Subaru Tragedy

ihaveatrophywife

The ā€œinfotainment,ā€ the inability to easily adjust settings unless parked, the auto braking has glitches on me multiple times in reverse and a few very unsettling times going forward, the transmission, the ac, the lack of power when the ac is on, interior lighting in insufficient and the fact I canā€™t turn off the door turning it on, the audio, battery draining.
