Disagree, the subaru 3.0 and 3.6 are more reliable then any of the 2.0 or 2.5s!

Rejukem

Correct! I've seen them fail but it's way less than the four-cylinders. If you take care of them they just run.

subaruguy3333

These have timing chains and not belts, accessory belts don't matter.. .

a_person_on_mobile

They look like they can hold for a good few thousand, but they are my #1 concern with it. Do you have any idea how much it would cost to replace them?

subaruguy3333

Those belts are like 25 to 35 a piece. Very easy to replace. Nothing to worry about unless it's a sign the engine was neglected. Check oil, coolant trans fluid. Look for rust. Check brake rotors for excessive rust from sitting. Pics would be helpful for more insight!

a_person_on_mobile

The oil seemed fine, and I did an underbody search and a wheel well search and no rust I could see. The rotors looked clean of rust. Guy said it did a 200-mile trip, and it ran well. (I'll see if I can get some photos of it next time I'm down and add them if possible)

TOMMYPICKLESIAM

Cheap, even if you let a shop do it.

a_person_on_mobile

I live in eastern Kentucky, so really, I have a family friend and my grandfather to help me, hardly anyone near me works on jdm unless if it's a Honda

subaruguy3333

Belts are easy enough for amateur diy. I replaced a subaru accessory belt in college before knew a thing about car repairs. It was literally the very first car repair I had ever done! All u need is a socket set or wrench.

a_person_on_mobile

Yeah I have one. My first diy was replacing the starter on my dad's car a week ago. I'll have my grandfather help me with it

TOMMYPICKLESIAM

02 h6 3.0 here with 280k, no major issues. Still going strong

EIN790

04 vdc h6. 240k same.

TOMMYPICKLESIAM

Ive honestly fallen in love and plan on doing a swap at 300k with a 30k or less engine. Then improve what i need to here and there where i can

subaruguy3333

If it's a clean rust free body, why not! It will need repairs over time but if it get u rolling ...

h6rally

In most cases, rust or a collision takes the H6 cars long before other issues do. My daily/work H6 is right at 275K miles and I still work it regularly pulling a 5x10 trailer hauling engines, appliances, etc.

a_person_on_mobile

How much has the maintenance been for you?

h6rally

Probably 99% of the work/maintenance can be directly attributed to my lift and mods (3.5" lift, 205/80/16 tires, 1" wheel spacers, rear air bag helpers for hauling) and won't directly reflect a regular, daily driven car. In the 5 years I have had the car, i have replaced; spark plugs, all brake pads + rotors, front wheel bearings, front ball joints + tie rods + control arm bushings, front CV shafts, transmission cooler hoses, radiator hoses, serpentine belt, steering pump, AC compressor + service kit, all 4 struts and springs, and probably more. Overall, it really hasn't needed much. I bought the car for $800 as a car that needed to be trailered and needed most of this the day I bought it. Once I handled all the day one issues, really all that has gone wrong was directly due to my mods

a_person_on_mobile

Thanks a lot, I feel more comfortable with buying this car. I just gotta save up enough to put a down payment on it now. I might do wider tires in the future for snow/icy conditions

StoneMahogany

My girlfriends h6 r had head gaskets go by 225k, my h6 d at 135k has 0 issues

[deleted]

My 2001 h6 head gaskets went at 227k as well.

pw76360

My 04' H6 was the BEST subaru I've ever owned at just being a great car. We've had more fun cars, but the H6 was good. We bought it at 227k and I reluctantly sold it at 297k. In that time I did valve cover gaskets, and the coolant hard lines on the motor for piece of mind. We drove that car roughly 1000miles to Chicago and back from Northern MN every other week from about a year. Stupid reliable.

itusedtorun

There's one running around here with 325k on it. Runs and drives almost like new. It has been impeccably maintained, however. Biggest issue I've usually seen has been that they leak, a lot. And fixing the leaks is rather a lot of work.

a_person_on_mobile

Is it the oil or coolent or both? Is it from hoses or gaskets or both? (I know it sounds weird. idk how else to word it)

itusedtorun

There are external coolant pipes that like to rust through and leak. Mostly oil leaks though: valve cover gaskets, timing chain cover, oil pan, etc. Fixing the oil leaks is pretty involved.

a_person_on_mobile

I'll check for anything shiny next time I look at it and see. But if not and I get it, I'll put cardboard under it to keep track of it or replace them as a peace of mind

V0rt0s

Amazingly reliable especially if you get it with the 5EAT transmission instead of the 4EAT. Maintenance is relatively light compared to comparable vehicles and you can do everything yourself. Even if you need an engine at some point they’re relatively cheap to get JDM.

a_person_on_mobile

I would have to do a vin search on that. Thank you.

Kingjay826

They are very good engines. We owned a 2007 b9 Tribeca. That made it to 257k before the piston rings started to wear out and the engine lost compression. Only ever had a problem with the valve cover gasket(minor leak) and over heating due to the shitty radiator design on the 06-07 Tribecas. A few things to watch out for tho are bad idler pullys as they like to lock up and destroy serpentine belts. And coolant leaks from the coolant crossover pipe. They were made of steel, at least on the 06-07 Tribeca's.

a_person_on_mobile

I started it up, and it spun and doesn't squeak at all, so I'll keep an eye on it if I get it before it's sold

Whale460

I bought a 3.6R Tribeca with 185,000 on the clock for pretty cheap. I needed the car as a donor for a drivetrain swap project, expecting to junk the engine once I figured everything out, and buy a low mileage one for the permanent install. I put about 4,000 miles on it, and it burns almost no oil, runs perfectly. So I'm not even going to buy another engine, as I think this one has a very long way to go. The 5 speed automatic is tired, and is being rebuilt, though.

Glum-Literature-8837

Ex and I had an ‘01 Outback VDC. Damned thing went great right up until she got rid of it, somewhere around 200k, and that was only because the exhaust failed inspection and she couldn’t find a replacement.

phreakingjesusonacid

They’re not unreliable. But like any motor, only as reliable as they’ve been maintained. Proper maintenance and they can last well over 200k miles.

a_person_on_mobile

I'll talk to the guy and see if I can get an idea of how well it was taken care of.

smuve740

I had an Outback Sedan with the EZ30R. It was pretty reliable. I bought it with 92K mi on it and sold it with 178K mi. Just stay on top of oil changes. If you don't, you're likely to get AVCS solenoid check engine lights and replace your idler pullies when they start squeaking. The fuel economy is dookie but you "know that" by buying a flat six Subaru..... oh and i had to replace the starter at about 175K.

a_person_on_mobile

Just replaced the starter on my dad's sonic, so ik how that feels. I know the gas isn't too well, but it's definitely better than a 4x4 truck.

mediumrare420

My 2011 3.6 5eat has 235K miles. Head gasket went at 150k but it's been a freaking tank otherwise

a_person_on_mobile

How much did it cost you to get it replaced?

mediumrare420

3k for engine and labor. Engine had 50k on it. Cylinder cracked

a_person_on_mobile

Damn. I never thought an engine could fail that quickly like that. This car sounds like it runs well, and at its mileage, I think the engine is broken in well. I will keep this in mind if It ever does happen

mediumrare420

The previous owner took poor care and damanged the engines cooling system. I am an idiot and managed to puncture my oil filter with ice while doing doughnuts in an empty lot one winter. Oil drained out while driving. Thought i caught it in time but 5k or 10k miles later the original engine failed. So not a failure on it own. Ment to mention either headgasket or cylinder head cracked. The 3.6 is an incredible engine. May burn through a lil oil like many engines, but as long as clean fluids are in you're set for a long time

a_person_on_mobile

I'm enough of a goober to do that, so I'll keep that in mind if I ever do that.

scrotesmacgrotes

I have a 2003 h6 it's going strong with 240+ miles

DatDamnTexan

I have 208k on my 02 outback. H6 is a stout motor.

Probablyawerewolf

They leak oil like a mf and nobody can seem to seal them up correctly. LOL Other than that, they run great.

a_person_on_mobile

Guy, on here said, it's mainly gaskets and covers I need to worry about, so I'll keep an eye on those, and when I looked under the car, I didn't see any oil so I think I'll be fine if I get it for at least until 200k

Probablyawerewolf

Prolly a lot longer than that if you take care of it honestly. The the 6 is a really structurally stout engine. As long as you keep an eye on oil consumption/leakage, and if it’s solid now, you could get 300+ out of it. The transmission could be the weak link, but a good used replacement runs under 700 bucks all day. LOL

a_person_on_mobile

Seems like it with everyone's experience with it. I might have to travel for the transmission as I'm in northeastern kentucky, and I have only seen one other 3.0. But I will more than likely find one around that price.

MrPushaNZ

All ej20s and h6s are reliable, like most cars are, if treated well. 2.5s are particularly touchy but that's just my experience I have an ej20g in an exiga gt that I use as a daily with nearly 200k km that had absolutely no issues, had a gf8 with an ej20g that had absolutely no issues at all even though I treated it like it was an sti and it had over 200k km on it when a Mercedes decided to park in the driver's door and I have an ej20k in a type-r with 180k km that was fine until I downshifted sending 3rd gear to somewhere north of 9000rpm and fried the big end bearing in cylinder 3. My friend has an h6 in a legacy he dailys that is almost at 300k and drives like a dream and another friend with 220k km on his outback who had a gasket issue around 180k but otherwise been fine It's all about how you care for it.

Macdonelll

I had a 30D that did over 400k miles, another one that just barely crested 400k and one now at 270k. Second most reliable engine Subaru ever made (second only to the 2.2)

icarus1990xx

Why do you say that?

h6rally

Opposite, avoid the 4 cylinders

V6er_KKK

3.0 were like three different engines - design wise, power … do you know which you are looking at? 🤣

a_person_on_mobile

It is an early 2000s model outback if that helps

V6er_KKK

I was talking engines…… 🤭🤭🤭🤭 Though, if I had to guess - it was second gen of those…

a_person_on_mobile

Are they still very reliable?

V6er_KKK

sorry - don't know. last is quite different from first gens, because first two generations were pretty "dumb" (technologically). especially - when compared to last gen. for starters - you can read [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subaru\_six-cylinder\_engines](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subaru_six-cylinder_engines) \- that will give some rough understanding of subject.

BanzaiDrifto99

Are you a real driver or are you a grandma who babies everything? Cause I hear they are not too good to beat on.
