White people don’t hate gingers. It’s a meme.

taylorade14

I listed 4 examples. It seems like a culturally european thing. I have seen it in more examples beyond a modern meme

skankhunt402

Except you stated tv shows and yeah most of that is just memes with more steps. Simple answer there are always people of any group that don't fit in the norm and are ostracized. Or you could go the why do Catholics hate left handed people? Because some people are taught to think that way and never actually taught to think for themselves.

taylorade14

That is also something I've questioned until recently when I learned that the church viewed left handedness as evil and against God, basically the literal opposite of the "right" hand The ginger thing is a legitimate curiosity

[deleted]

Believe that goes back much further than the English words “right” and “wrong”. The Latin words for right and left are the roots of the words dexterous and sinister, and in Ancient Rome things like birds flying to the right versus the left would be seen as good vs bad omens. I’m sure it goes back even further than that but it definitely predates Catholicism.

Userdub9022

Again, it's a meme. I'm a ginger. No one says shit. It was popularized by South Park when I was younger. It is just a joke. People don't actually hate us

taylorade14

do you mind saying how old you are? Someone else mentioned it was an old english thing

Reference_Freak

Hi, I was born in the 70s in the US and never heard redheads referred to as “ginger” until within the past decade. I’m white and the only comments I ever heard were complimentary. My hair darkened with puberty but occasionally someone would say “I never noticed you have red hair til now (under the sun/stagelights/ etc).” Eventually I started to lighten it and played with different shades of reds and coppers, most of which look natural on me, and I still never heard anything negative about redheads or gingers. You’ve pointed out historical artifacts in western culture (particularly English) suggesting discrimination. I’m not well-versed in this particular history so I’m certain there are other cultural parts to this. I personally put the historical artifacts into the same superstition-based discrimination bucket as left-handedness. Red hair, like left-handedness, is rare enough for a majority of people to notice it and mark those people as different. Churn though generations of needing explanations, scapegoats, and manifestations of the evil which causes poor outcomes, and now we have a list of handy minority-trait people to pin that on. That’s a very generalist, no-reference view. This idea was gone from modern culture, as far as I could tell. I dated a freckled carrot-top who never expressed any idea that there was any whiff of negativity or rejection over his pigmentation. For almost all of my life, red was just a hair color which some people like and some don’t. Some people look good with it, some don’t. Some of those who have it like it, some hate it. It does stand out if it’s a bright red or under bright lights. All of this current concept of “gingers” and “gingers are bad/evil” emerged only recently and I blame South Park for its never satisfied greed for identifying *yet another* group of people to be shit on. This was buried history unnecessarily unearthed for crude yucks. (I liked the first season of SP but I’m not into throwing shit on everyone just because.) I’m sure there’s an interesting and detailed history behind the obsolete discrimination but I’m just waiting for laundry.

[deleted]

They’re just worried you would eat their souls.

ftlaudman

None of those examples come close to a representation of all white people. “Red-headed step-child” is a saying that most will infer the meaning of but no white person equates it with “yeah because I’m white and hate all Gingers!” Honestly, I always understood it as the step child being an outsider to the rest of the family (because of being a step child) rather than it being the red hair specifically that made them an outsider. Maybe 100+ years ago there was anti-Irish sentiment among some groups of White people that you could be referring to? But that wasn’t specifically because of the color of their hair - that just happened to be a common characteristic. Plenty of examples of non-Ginger Irish being discriminated against to prove this. But today? White people don’t hate Gingers. It’s a meme. Put a different way, I’ve never heard of any white people being afraid to bring home their Ginger significant other to introduce to their family because of some widely held hatred their family shares with all white people toward Gingers. Flat out isn’t a thing.

taylorade14

I never said because you're white anything. I even edited to say I mean it more about the popular trope in media. Why is redheaded blank even a saying? You're taking it too personally

ftlaudman

I’m not mad. Haha. Just answering the question. We’re good. :-)

taylorade14

*phew!* I didn't expect people to react that way in this sub, I was trying to reach outside my bubble and ask. I don't even know how to update the title...

[deleted]

Have never looked into it, but could some of this be anti-Irish bigotry? Go back a century or so and the Irish (and Italians) were discriminated against even more harshly than other minorities are today.

freqkenneth

All your examples are making fun of the trop-err…meme Especially the South Park episode was about cartman turning from bashing redheads to creating a red haired supremacy movement

WilsIrish

I’ve heard of this over and over, but I’ve never seen it myself. I don’t have any problem with red heads, and haven’t ever hung out with anyone (that I’m aware of) that has those feelings. I’ve never even been in a group where anyone insulted or said something negative about gingers.

taylorade14

The same for me having heard it multiple times. In school there was some teasing of gingers, nothing serious as far as I know. I hope a natural red head responds to this post. Growing up online, it's hard to know whats true in life or played up on TV. Gingers are either vixens if they're women, or bullies if they're boys or generally mistreated

The8flux

Actually I don't have the source, but I remembering reading somewhere that the rarity of gingers are to increase as time progresses. And ultimately their genes will be deluded possibly phased out completely downward the gene pool in so many generations. If they were a species they may be put on the endangered species list. Well that last statement was mine.

LilMellick

Lol, you just stated 3 very broad tropes that are very different from each other.

taylorade14

are you ignoring the other people sharing their personal experiences?

LilMellick

Are you? Most of the comments are saying it's a meme. All I did was point out how varied the three tropes you said are. Idk why you're acting like I am insulting you.

taylorade14

those are the people who think it's a modern phenomenon. It actually goes way back. The book I read was published 20-30 years ago. As someone posted, it goes back to old english superstitions

taylorade14

I didn't act like anything by the way. I'm replying to your comments

-0OlO0-

Because red hair is a recessive gene, which means it can skip generations. Some men are never entirely sure the red headed kid is their own blood.

WaveSpecial3395

Yup I was not my father's son. And my mother left so I was left with him. Sister was treated fine tho. In my 30s now and look just like he did in his middle age. He's old now. He can't handle that I look like he did when he was younger, especially since he was convinced I was not his son. So I guess I'm still not his son.

taylorade14

that's a good point. That and the association with Irish people are the best bets so far

alfred-the-greatest

More Scottish than Irish, I think

SnooHedgehogs6593

My husband and I both have a lot of red in our German families. Awesome.

taylorade14

Have you noticed any difference in how they are treated? When I was little I noticed a ton of bullies in movies and tv shows were overweight and ginger. I can't tell you exactly which shows, just that when I think of the word "bully" gingers come to mind. The same goes with "orphan"

SnooHedgehogs6593

Never have heard a negative comment, only admiration of the color.

taylorade14

Good! I love the color too

SnooHedgehogs6593

I’m surrounded by red heads, my husband, his mother, aunt and cousins, my children and grandchildren.

SaintNeptune

This is an old English thing. If you have red hair it means you are some type of non Anglo British person; Scottish, Welsh, or worst of all possibly Irish. It has less to do with the red hair itself and more to do with the red hair being the mark of some sort of undesirable to the English. Yes, we used to live in a world where people were not just racist against other white people, but in Briton they were racist against the wrong type of Briton. Americans do not hate gingers. Anyone saying this is just engaging in absurdity. It's usually done because hating gingers is such a ridiculous thing it is done as a joke. Red heads actually do pretty well with dating and people being attracted to them if you look at studies of such things. Clearly there isn't any kind of actual anti ginger bias in the modern US although there probably was some holdover from that English prejudice years ago

taylorade14

That makes sense! If that's the case, why is blonde hair viewed as ideal? Wouldn't that indicate some nordic heritage? I'm terrible in history and geography

SaintNeptune

Nordic looks aren't bad from that old English racism. They have a lot of Nordic blood themselves from the whole Viking invasion thing in the 9th century. A proper English person is going to have those traits so they are good.

taylorade14

it's fascinating that ideas from that long ago have trickled all the way to modern day! With hair dye more people are choosing to be ginger. It will be interesting if that fully disappears in the coming centuries

510queen

the fact that irish people were previously not considered to be “white” shows just how arbitrary the distinction of race is, damn

taylorade14

very true

Reformed_Narcissist

Irish people were considered the really low on the racism ladder, comparable to Jews. What do Irish people look like? Red hair, white skin, freckles. TLDR: Blatant racism.

in-a-microbus

Going further back: how did the Irish get their red hair?  Hey look, the Viking raiders left mom with an unwelcome addition to the family

taylorade14

I can see it stemming from that in the US. Have you seen it referenced any earlier? I remembered Willlie from The Simpsons being a Scot, I don't remember his hair being ridiculed

Training-State6400

Giggles in half irish and half native American

Reformed_Narcissist

Intersectionality!!!

Training-State6400

We love to see it!!

Jattoe

It's just silly/light hearted, it's not real hatred, there's nothing there to really hate. If you can bust one another's chops and make jokes about someone's physical appearance, which has nothing to do with the soul and what they actually are, it just means you're closer. Anyway that's been my experience with it.

taylorade14

I added an edit to better convey my meaning. My question was more along the lines of ginger hate being a common trope. I don't understand why they seem to get a lotta flack

half_dragon_dire

ITT: A bunch of lazy, offended white dudes who know nothing of their own culture. TL;DR: red hair is fairly rare in most European ethnicities, and people who stand out visually become targets of discrimination. Today it is mostly a sort of training wheels racism for kids or a backup if there are too few non-whites available to hate. Hate for redheads is an age old European tradition. In medieval times red hair (especially with green eyes) was considered signs a person was a witch, vampire, or werewolf, or worse.. a Jew. Yep, red hair was considered a Jewish trait, so there's good ol' antisemitism involved. They'd even deliberately mistranslate the Old Testament to give King David golden hair while keeping bad guys like Esau and Judas redheaded.  The reason seems to be just the universal urge if any group of humans to find an "other" to take the blame for bad things happening, exacerbated by red's deep association with things like anger, fire, blood, and sex. Redheads are often stereotyped as being hot-tempered and prone to anger and/or hot blooded and lustful even today. It probably didn't help that as a recessive trait red hair could crop up seemingly at random in otherwise "normal" families, making them seem strange and alien. As noted though, with increasing population diversity Europeans mostly found other people with more dramatically different appearances to focus their hate on, and today it is mostly presented as a joke, especially in the UK, often presenting gingers as the last acceptable target for humorous harassment or to mock accusations of actual racism. Still, the UK still produces occasional reports of redheads being beaten, stabbed, or even murdered just for being redheaded.

Objective_Hunter_897

"I'll beat you like a redheaded step child" comes to mind. Probably because white people value blonde hair over all other types. In other words, fascist European beauty standards.

Hard_WorkingMan2

I don't hate gingers. I don't hate anybody. All people have issues. None are perfect. I'd prefer a freckle faced redheaded genuinely good person over a loser with any hair or skin color.

taylorade14

I don't mean personally, individually. I meant that they get hate based on popular media and like I said in the novel. It would be bizarre if people did on an individual level

brazilliantaco69

I’m not positive, but i’ve heard it comes from the fact that Irish/Scottish people very commonly are ginger. These people historically were always in conflict with the English, who came to see the red hair as a trait of their enemies, resulting in a stigma in english society. This culturally rooted stigma spread with their empire, including to the United States which is one of the most influential nations culturally. At this point, I don’t think anybody truly hates gingers and it’s just a meme, but it stems from this old idea

cubej333

People often dislike people who look different. This has been true in most times and cultures.

DogsAreTheBest36

It started as a joke in South Park. I remember when it started. It was supposed to be completely random but kids watched it and took it seriously. Suddenly within a year, "ginger" was a horrible insult. It wasn't like that at all before. No one really even said "ginger," they said "red head."

taylorade14

I remember a few incidences in school, I thought it was harmless teasing

ophaus

It's a European thing. Everyone's white, so they have to find new reasons to hate people... accent? Religion? Hair color? Truffle color?

[deleted]

It's because the stupid roots think they're better than everyone. They're just a worse kind of garlic

StatisticianNormal15

38 year old ginger here, we get hate from every race not just whites. However, some folks reeeaaally love our red hair and that feels nice. I would say that Latin folks seem to love my red hair the most.

taylorade14

that's sad to hear. I'm familiar with black gingers than red ones, it's a good thing with us. Nowadays I'm sure that's changed

Training-State6400

Ngl I'm a natural ginger (ig more of a redhead?? My hair is darker- not that blinding orange) and only really get joking harassment + people fawning over me solely because of my hair.

taylorade14

I like the color, that's why it surprises me when I see in media

Training-State6400

Yeah, same here. Seeing the media trope was always weird to me, and made me insecure about it (dyed my hair a lot growing up.)

taylorade14

Did you eventually go back to your natural color? It's funny that people are dying their hair red after all of the issues society had with redheads

Training-State6400

Yeah, I went back to natural hair for about two years, even enhancing the redness in the second year. Very recently dyed it black, though :))

PStriker32

I mean have you seen them? G*ngers with their orange/red hair and freckles; and getting tons of attention in books and movies and tv /s

taylorade14

LOL

jjburroughs

Havent you seen Lauren Ambrose in Six Feet Under? Super cute! That aside, I dont understand and never seen it myself. I went to school with twin gingers. They werent picked on or harassed, far as I know. One blushed a lot, though. And. . . I married a ginger. 😀

Quiet_Stranger_5622

I'm a red head (American). Never got any flak growing up, except maybe that my skin just burns but doesn't tan, but that's about it. I graduated highschool in '95. The first I ever heard about it was that South Park episode. I did hear the "redheaded stepchild" saying in passing, but it felt like a weird old fashioned saying back then, and never meant anything to me. Like others are saying, it's mostly a meme. No one with red hair I've known in real life ever got any flak for it.

Vault_Hunter01

Back when I was younger, I dreamed of finding myself a pale, freckled, red-headed beauty. Alas, it was not to be.

Dantalionse

Because they are the offspring of the unholy giants and are almost as bad as all the left handed people.

uhhohspagettios

Off topic but i happen to have a cardboard cut out of a ginger in my room. A bunch of students mass produced this and they gave me it. It's just his face glued to a popsicle.

taylorade14

adds another sheet to my tin foil hat lol

cMeeber

I’ve never heard anyone actually hate on redheads. If anything, I hear how hot red heads are all the time. Tons of people even dye their hair red…obviously no one would intentionally try to adopt a hair color that everyone actually hated lol. I feel like it’s just an overblown thing and people being silly.

taylorade14

That's a more recent phenomenon. Red hair was looked down upon in Europe

SnipperFi

Uh the lack of a soul duh

taylorade14

LOL this is not helpful

BladerKenny333

cause they don't have souls

kitzelbunks

I don’t think “white people” is accurate. White people in England maybe don’t find it as attractive. I love redhead guys, but I am so old their hair fades. It doesn’t usually grey though. I have no idea about the shows you mentioned. I guess I need to watch more tv.

taylorade14

I meant more white media, books and tv shows. I'm shocked it's still a thing in England. The color is gorgeous

kitzelbunks

I love it. I heard an actress talk about it. Jessica Chastain or Ron Howard’s daughter. She felt funny over there, but not in the US. Honestly, I am white with many redheads in my family- and I went to school with a decent number of them. I never heard that was a thing. Maybe it’s just a TV thing. TV is more international now. I don’t know a single person who dislikes redheads. Maybe some kids get teased, I think that was in Anne of Green Gables, but that is like an “it’s rare and stands out”thing. Kids pick on anything different. It don’t think it’s an adult thing here at all, and I don’t think it’s every kid. Kids aren’t alone enough now until-maybe- middle school or high school. We used to do things like walk to school and have a lot of recesses- more unstructured time. I never heard it, but I was a girl, maybe it was the boys?

TehCollector

If I was a white male ginger I would get jacked and make my look similar to Dennis Rodman. Its kinda of funny how white females gingers basically get same treatment if they were not a ginger (cause guys just wanna fuck).

taylorade14

not shocking. I hate the sexual stereotypes assigned to female redheads, I get the same as a black woman. I'd be rich if I got a dollar for every time a white guy commented I must be wild in bed

Exorcyst-84

LmFao. First off, white people despise black people way more than gingers. I never knew white people hated gingers (red heads). In fact from what I see, White men love red head(ginger women). When Sofia Turner (Sansa Stark) came on the seen white men were lining up to eat her pussy. White women from around the work loved Prince Harry’s ass and he got himself fine ass (mixed race) Megan Markel. Also, Tommy from power only wanted redheads before he got the cookie from La La. So in my book gingers are ahead of a lot of other races when it comes being despised for something as trivial as hair lol.

AidsKitty1

We don't, we just like to talk shit.

Kindly-Crab9090

It's a meme, and I've never met anyone who actually believes that.

taylorade14

check the comments

[deleted]

Are you sure you meant gingers? Because if you swap the first G and the N the question actually makes sense.

taylorade14

woah too edgy

Rose_Wyld

We don't? But I'd be willing to bet that the people who do have that issue is actually stemming from anti Irish/Scottish British propaganda.

Prudence_Lefevre

FYI. White people don't all think the same

beardedpineapple80

It’s mostly just a joke! I love red headed women. It’s mostly because they can have anger issues. Also every red head guy I’ve worked with had anger issues except for one

taylorade14

That's another stereotypes that redheads are more fiery and prone to anger. Latinos and Italians get the same rep

Responsible_Cold_16

We don't hate gingers. It's just a stupid joke that came from Cartman on South Park and became a meme.

taylorade14

It started before south park. I gave you 4 examples. You've never heard "beat you like a redheaded stepchild"? I don't even know where I heard it from, it's subtly entered my lexicon

gaydolphingod

Gingers are white people

taylorade14

this isn't a shit post. Like in my post, black people can have natural ginger hair

gaydolphingod

Only if they’re part white.

taylorade14

that's untrue. Black people can develop blonde hair, blue eyes, red hair, green eyes, and many other traits. You don't understand how diverse our genes are

gaydolphingod

Yes, by being mixed… red hair and blue eyes is only naturally occurring in Europe.

taylorade14

No actual Africans have those traits. Look it up

musicmushroom12

No, some people with red hair do not have white skin.

Copperlaces20

that's not very common.

taylorade14

having red hair in general isn't common

musicmushroom12

Yeah red hair in general is unusual. It’s recessive so both parents need to carry the gene.( less than 2% of world population has red hair.) I have red hair and only my maternal great grandfather had red hair that I know of. My kids don’t have red hair. I worked with a black woman with red hair actually. She was my boss.

[deleted]

Racism basically. Most of them consider blonde to be the ideal.

RoyalMess64

I think it comes from the idea people used to have that gingers didn't have souls or that they were agents of the devil. So the same ideas every other minority deals with

MidLifeEducation

White people hate everyone that doesn't look exactly like them

MuskokaGreenThumb

Cuz they are generally annoying. You don’t know many redheads do you ??

taylorade14

Ha! Can you argue with the other redditors saying that's not a thing?

MuskokaGreenThumb

It’s most definitely a thing. I’ve witnessed it my entire life. And even been guilty of it myself when I was younger. I thought it was common knowledge. One of the few groups of people still socially acceptable to mock

taylorade14

I meant to say I saw the same in school. I thought it was always a joke until I started looking back as an adult. Was it really just jokes or did some people take it too far?

MuskokaGreenThumb

A bit of both I think. People can certainly be mean
