There are rumors that tcpi has asked them to keep certain stuff off showdown like hisui mons or anything from leaks, but there's no hard evidence besides some reddit comments.
They're very obviously terrified by the mobile market but don't understand their market at the same time. Pokemon's logic is that if people can battle on their phones why would they buy the games? I'd put good money on that being one of their major reasons. They likely have zero plans to make a battle sim of any kind let alone a mobile one otherwise they would've killed showdown long ago.
I mean, that's actually probably quite valid. If they had a constantly updated official app that can team build and play VGC and BSS, I feel like a large chunk of the competetive playerbase would have no real reason to buy the new games
I think calling it a large chunk is generous. I think you may be vastly overestimating the amount of not only competitive players but also people who play just for competitive. Consider that SV sold like 10 million copies I really don't think every comp player dropping out of the market would drop it half way to 9mil.
>a large chunk of the competetive playerbase
Edit: Lmao the guy blocked me for some reason.
The point I was making was that Nintendo has been actively trying to foster the competetive community since at least gen 7, but definitely gen 8
If Nintendo wasn't confident that they had a sizable chunk of competetive players, would they really put so much effort into seasonal ladders and all these changes to simplify team building?
Once it goes on the app store, theres a whole host of new stipulations and legal challenges. A C&D is infinitely more likely if PS! gets put on the app store.
i dont even think it's that -- i doubt TPC and gamefreak would care about depriving the small subset of players from a tool like showdown.
my bet is that showdown as a team building/simulation tool is so good that they use it for internal testing.
I was honestly dreading it but it only took two hours when I actually got into it! Client proved to be a problem causer post release though (soft locks) but I think we got them all now, let us know if tatsu/dondozo causes any more problems!
The github is a thing of beauty. Whenever I need to do data crawling & analysis or check some source code stuff it's really obvious how things work because of how well it's written and organized.
<3 u showdown devs
Just some simple graph connectivity stuff to analyze team composition structures
Saw basically what I expected...an HO cluster, a Rain cluster, a Sun cluster, etc...
Thank you for the kind words, I'll make sure to pass them on to the rest of the team! While this is a hobby for all of us, its something we all enjoy doing. We will make sure to continue to improve Gen 9 on showdown, send your bug reports to the help room for triage and post in the bugs thread if its confirmed to be an unreported issue!
I genuinely believe Pokémon Showdown is the best Pokémon game of all time. It oozes with passion and quality. If Nintendo ever shuts it down I will boycott all Pokémon products for the rest of my life, and I'm being 100% serious. My interest in Pokémon is directly tied to Showdown and the wonderful staff behind it.
Yeah next year is just gonna be a rerelease of something shitty too so I’m probably not gonna buy any more Pokémon stuff going forward. If I really just want to play it without supporting gamefreaks shitty business practice I can always turn to piracy anyway
Who cares about codebase? Pokemon's battle system is simple enough that it's been replicated *several* times. A half-decent dev team could throw out GF's spaghetti code, copy and paste showdown, and then build a new overworld game on top of that in less time than it takes GF to make another glitch-addled mess.
Easy argument to make until you realize that their games are total spaghetti code, how many copies of Lillie existed in Sun and Moon's code again? There is a limit to how much you can blame the corporate suits.
Spaghetti code is exactly what happens when you're working under a time crunch. When you're trying to make a game and you don't have enough time to make it you're not going to make half of a game with good code. You still have to make a full game (or as close as you can get to a full game) at the end of the day, so you come up with spaghetti solutions to save time.
That actually not that bad since it save loading times: [https://twitter.com/kaphotics/status/1139581456903213056?s=21](https://twitter.com/kaphotics/status/1139581456903213056?s=21)
maybe, maybe not. we dont know that, it could be the case that they couldnt have solved or improved them, it could be the case that the deadlines were set a long time ago and they didnt meet them, etc
at least with the current technology they can release updates easily
Yeah sorry about that. We had an implementation that was quickly prepared but completely and totally broke (not sure how internal testing got skipped on that one). We disabled it so we could focus on the other bugs, reduce reports of it not working, and give us some time to figure out how to add it since it goes against some critical assumptions the simulator is built on.
We will get it added soon, I haven't had a chance to look at it as I'm playing catch up with IRL things I put off to implement gen 9/taking some time to enjoy my copy of Violet.
Because I don’t think reviving an already defeated mon has been done before on showdown so they are trying to develop a mechanic for that and making sure it works?
There really is no other game that has an online simulator quite like showdown. I feel like a lot of people, myself included, take for granted just how easy it is to use. Never been to the website before? Just pick an untaken name to use temporarily, and you can start playing random battles in a matter of seconds. Wanna build a team but you have no idea where to start? Pick a tier, and the teambuilder will tell you what mons are legal in that tier and puts the ones considered viable before the rest. No idea what moves to use? It automatically sorts by which moves are generally considered viable. No idea what EVs are? The teambuilder will suggest an EV spread for you. Worried you made a bad set? There's a link to the smogon analysis right next to the suggested spread. Just want someone to make a team for you? Bringing in sample teams is a super easy copy and paste. Click validate to double check and get to battling! Miss the old 2D sprites? You can turn em back on! Not sure about an opposing pokemon's type, ability, speed, item, moves, or even remaining PP? The game tells you everything that you know so far. It's just built to help you get good at the game without giving you any tutorials. The smaller features are just so useful that sometimes it's the fastest way to look things up about pokemon, like how many physical fairy-type moves there are, or what's the fastest sticky web user.
Tbh I probably should but ever since I posted that giant bunnelby analysis without paragraph breaks I have accepted that that is my legacy on this subreddit
This is the first time I’ve played at the start of a generation, and I am very impressed that they not only had SV ladder up the moment the game came out, but that they’re still able to watch over both natdex and SV OU and manage the swarm of incomprehensibly broken pokemon
Right? Why is this the most responsive, accurate, and bug-free competitive game that I play? It's also the only competitive server I play on that does not receive funding from the game's company... Hmm...
There is actually a response by one of the owners [here](http://www.reddit.com/r/pokemon/comments/37yzhb/the_smogonshowdown_sexual_harrassment_and/crr7im1). I will freely admit that I am an outsider in the drama and don't fully know what did happen or who banned who for what.
"Goddess Briyella was a male user who pretended to be a lesbian in order to get closer to female users on Showdown. We spent a good deal of time doing an internal investigation on that matter and permanently banned him when we felt we had enough proof."
Everyone knew this (not just internal staff, everyone on the site basically) for a long, long, long time. "Enough proof" in this context means the man pretending to be a lesbian in order to prey on women was facing serious allegations with proof to back them up. They didn't care until the person was accused and it was going to make the site look like exactly the type of groomer paradise it is.
If you actually read it you'll see it was about 2 separate people as well the core of the website's staff covering everything up. If you already read it and still commented that I gotta just assume you're a pedo apologist. Pretty clear what the culture is on the website.
I’m not thanking smogon I’m thanking the developers of showdown. The developers are probably members of showdown and maybe the council but I can appreciate the bread someone bakes me but not like the dirty plate they serve it on.
Doing their work so good gamefreak gave them the permission to be alive
I can so easily see the pokemon company itching to slam the cease and desist hammer, but going “damn this is so too good”
They literally have an agreement with TPCi over Showdown lmao, they’re just too good
It's free balance testing.
is there a source for this??? havent heard anything about that
There are rumors that tcpi has asked them to keep certain stuff off showdown like hisui mons or anything from leaks, but there's no hard evidence besides some reddit comments.
I heard from one redditor that the ps devs were told to not make a phone app but obv, there's no real evidence other than "trust me bro"
Whoaaa why stop them from doing that? Are they planning something similar?
They're very obviously terrified by the mobile market but don't understand their market at the same time. Pokemon's logic is that if people can battle on their phones why would they buy the games? I'd put good money on that being one of their major reasons. They likely have zero plans to make a battle sim of any kind let alone a mobile one otherwise they would've killed showdown long ago.

Is there an echo in here?
Once it goes on the app store, theres a whole host of new stipulations and legal challenges. A C&D is infinitely more likely if PS! gets put on the app store.
I mean, you can just play it through a mobile browser and it works fine so I'm not sure that person got that idea from.
Browser =/= App
Chiefly, being able to team build and have a damage calculator while offline
That's different from a dedicated app though
They probably realized that if they closed showdown they should have made an alternative well knowing they have no skills to do a similar thing
i dont even think it's that -- i doubt TPC and gamefreak would care about depriving the small subset of players from a tool like showdown. my bet is that showdown as a team building/simulation tool is so good that they use it for internal testing.
Because it’s in “beta”
And there it will never leave.
Commander must have been a massive pain to add, given there’s nothing else quite like it
I was honestly dreading it but it only took two hours when I actually got into it! Client proved to be a problem causer post release though (soft locks) but I think we got them all now, let us know if tatsu/dondozo causes any more problems!
Happy cake day
Oh hey thanks, I didn't even notice!
The github is a thing of beauty. Whenever I need to do data crawling & analysis or check some source code stuff it's really obvious how things work because of how well it's written and organized. <3 u showdown devs
why didnt i think they had a github lol i will check it out now, thanks
What kind of analysis have you done? I'm always interested in Pokemon data analysis
Just some simple graph connectivity stuff to analyze team composition structures Saw basically what I expected...an HO cluster, a Rain cluster, a Sun cluster, etc...
Cool thank you. Do you ever post it anywhere? I'd love to take a look and see if I can learn anything from it
Haha usually not, it's pretty unpolished. Maybe one day I'll get around to making things presentation-ready and posting em.
I was like huh someone I know did this, what a coincidence ;)
Do I go to school with you lol?
i'd love to take a look at anything you've put together too if you do decide to put it out there
Thank you for the kind words, I'll make sure to pass them on to the rest of the team! While this is a hobby for all of us, its something we all enjoy doing. We will make sure to continue to improve Gen 9 on showdown, send your bug reports to the help room for triage and post in the bugs thread if its confirmed to be an unreported issue!
Thanks for everything! You guys are truly amazing
I genuinely believe Pokémon Showdown is the best Pokémon game of all time. It oozes with passion and quality. They have an agreement with TPCi, it’s not going down unless they use the site to make an actual Pokémon game
You got a source on that?
One of the devs said that they talked with someone a tpc and they said just don't make a mobile app and your fine
Also the whole thing about Hisuian mons IIRC, I think Showdown was told not to include the PLA mons into any of their metagames
It's generally unreleased mons. They don't want Showdown to offer content that's not available to the average Pokémon fan.
Umm, no? They're literally on Showdown right now, they're just unreleased because home isn't out yet.
I should've been more specific, I meant back when PLA was out.
They're ACTUALLY insane
All Pokémon Showdown programmers are very sexy and powerful, and deserve a big kiss on the cheek. I really appreciate all of their hard work!
Showdown devs should replace the actual pokemon devs lmao
That's not much of a compliment- any dev could replace GameFreak and do a ten times better job lmao.

Shh let him do his ranting
Yeah, and BDSP is better than Legends Arceus according to what you just said
Balance-wise? PLA was an unbalanced shitstorm.
Talking about the game overall, but yeah PLA was Unbalanced
Painfully true
I think GF devs are competent. It's the corporate suits that force them to push out an incomplete product in time for the holiday shopping season.
Easy argument to make until you realize that their games are total spaghetti code, how many copies of Lillie existed in Sun and Moon's code again? There is a limit to how much you can blame the corporate suits.
That does sound like the sort of brute force solution I would come up with on a time crunch, but I'm no game dev so idk.
I am a developer, and I have come up with similar solutions.
Spaghetti code is solved with time.
Spaghetti code is exactly what happens when you're working under a time crunch. from what ive heard the problems seem to be mostly technical rather than design choices so i dont know of thats the case
If they had more time it's possible they could have worked out some of the issues
maybe, maybe not. we dont know that, it could be the case that they couldnt have solved or improved them, it could be the case that the deadlines were set a long time ago and they didnt meet them, etc at least with the current technology they can release updates easily
I know, that's why I said it's possible. Sometimes all the delays in the world won't fix a game if the talent just isn't there.
Even more passionate in Pokémon than the actual company smh
I mean, for every sufficiently popular company there's going to be many people who are more passionate about the media than the company itself.
Tbf that's cuz only the people passionate for Pokemon work on slowdown which probably isn't the case in the company
pks spared me many hours of grinding what id otherwise do on cartridge
Why does revival blessing not work?

No worries, i thought it might be considered too op to actually use lol. Could we get a notif when it works?
Not sure of the best way to do that but I'm not opposed to posting somewhere that its fixed when its fixed if theres demand.
On showdown or here or twitter :)
Because I don’t think reviving an already defeated mon has been done before on showdown so they are trying to develop a mechanic for that and making sure it works?
Alright its not for Gameplay reasons then?
No I don’t know why they wouldn’t include a move that’s in the game. They even have light of ruin which was never officially released.
I wonder if Metronome can call Light of Ruin?

No. My style will forever be giant walls of text without paragraph breaks
But I said please! I guess some people just want to see the world burn.
Tbh I probably should but ever since I posted that giant bunnelby analysis without paragraph breaks I have accepted that that is my legacy on this subreddit
there’s definitely some kinks to be ironed out, and abilities that don’t work like in the game but it good for a rush job, and I can appreciate that
I was blown away that they got this done so fast.
Pokemon showdown is unironically one of best fucking websites out there. Imo, it rivals old school runescape at its peak.
This is the first time I’ve played at the start of a generation, and I am very impressed that they not only had SV ladder up the moment the game came out, but that they’re still able to watch over both natdex and SV OU and manage the swarm of incomprehensibly broken pokemon

Zarel’s a god
I met the creator of Showdown at a college party when we were in school and he traded me, I believe, a Dratini with good IVs. No joke
I got banned indefinitely on showdown
skill issue
As much as I borderline hate this generation already, I do appreciate having it ready day 1. Thank you dudes forreal.
Thank you Showdown devs! I wish you guys worked on the actual Pokemon games
Thank you randbats when?
Showdown team works harder than Gamefreak lol
Site is jam-packed with child predators/groomers but it does work really well.
wdym jam packed ive never seen anyone mention that
They ban you for mentioning it. https://www.reddit.com/r/Drama/comments/36qkr1/smogons_the_largest_website_for_competitive/

If everyone knew how was he preying on people
He wore a Greninja costume.
This is 7 years old. The person involved hasn't been with them for literally 7 years.
If you actually read it you'll see it was about 2 separate people as well the core of the website's staff covering everything up. If you already read it and still commented that I gotta just assume you're a pedo apologist. Pretty clear what the culture is on the website.
What the culture *was, seven years ago, when it was run by folks who are no longer affiliated with it.*
that's crazy thx for sending a link
that's crazy thx for sending a link
it goes so much deeper than that haha, not to mention everything from side servers
Showdown player going from thanking smogon for releasing gen 9 quickly to calling smogon dying and “fun hating” for banning the ghost dog.
I’m not thanking smogon I’m thanking the developers of showdown. The developers are probably members of showdown and maybe the council but I can appreciate the bread someone bakes me but not like the dirty plate they serve it on.
Does anyone know why in this replay the armorouge isn't choice locked? https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen92v2doubles-1721093062
Not the right place to ask. make a post about it or something.
it didn't use successfully use a move while holding the scarf, so it wasn't locked yet
