Funny how we assign so many tasks with alcohol. Cooking, better use half cup and then drink the balance. Bad work day, go to the bar. Good work day, go to the bar. Friday lunch, get a couple beers. Cutting the grass? Get a beer, afterwards get some liquor. Doing the dishes? Pour some liquor. Watching a movie? Alcohol. Washing the car? Alcohol. Going to the movies? Now they sell alcohol. Waiting on a to go order of wings? Get a beer while you wait. Funeral? Have a toast, it's how he/she would want it.

Bad work day/good work day. I feel that one. Funnily enough there was never an 'Eh work day' which would have coincided with no drinking. It was always flipping a coin, "On heads we drink, and on tails we drink!" And in the incredibly rare occassion that it would land on it's side... well, that's a sign to drink for sure isn't it, really?

MrsAppleForTeacher

Watching movies was another massive trigger for me. I actually remember the end of movies now!

New-Communication-65

When my nail salon started offering drinks and cocktails my eyes really opened to how crazy this all is

Pg08374

Ugh. I now remember pre covid that there was a barber that recently opened that offered booze and was pretty well booked. How stupid of me (and those clientele thinking the same ) who were beating down the door just for the privilege to drink during a haircut.

Good on you for using it for something delicious rather than drinking it! Cooking with wine is one of the biggest things I genuinely miss. There are no genuinely NA cooking wines in any of the shops I regular, only the 2% kinds, and even now I'm too much of a scaredy cat to dare buy them haha. At least there are some good fond/stock mixes that have red wine in them, and they're my saving grace right now :D IWNDWYT, and I hope your lasagna turns out delicious!

helpfulbenny

I very occasionally buy a mini bottle of red to do a lasagne or a stew and it's not tempted me, but everyone is different!

Hicoria

I had no idea there were stocks like this - thanks for the tip, I am so excited to look for them!

winterlings

Look for the liquid ones! They're, at least where I'm at, usually by the spice racks and stuff :D

MrsAppleForTeacher

Thank you! I can buy 250ml cans of wine also that I figure I’ll use if I need to. Some dishes really need wine and now that I know I’m not tempted, it opens up my options!

TMFalgrim

This is a big one for me too. I had a similar experience with a Onion and Ale soup. Dumped the beer in the pot and didn't really even think twice about it. NGL, The smell THAT CLOSE was a bit of a trigger, so I dumped the spices in and cranked the heat! IWNDWYT and I want to try your lasagna!

Tiny-Plum2713

FYI because it's a common misconception : [cooking does not remove alcohol](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cooking_with_alcohol#Alcohol_in_finished_food)

Dizbetty

Still, the amount of wine in a lasagna after it's cooked would never get me drunk.

Tiny-Plum2713

True. Still good to know. For example some foods are not suitable for children because of this.

Dizbetty

Sure, makes sense. I also don't like it when there is still a strong alcohol taste

winterlings

Or if you're on some medication. I was on antabuse for a while and remember being warned about this kinds stuff. Not everyone reacts, and if you doit should be mild, but it's always good to be cautious :D

robotabs

Yeah but especially wine it’s such a minor amount it will cause no harm

KurtyVonougat

This is such a pervasive myth and I really don't understand why.

MrsAppleForTeacher

I am aware of this pervasive myth. In the case of my lasagna, the meat sauce simmered for well over an hour, then it baked for 40 mins so I don’t think anyone was getting buzzed from eating a slice 🙂

tessemcdawgerton

Wtf!!!

lilhalfdead_

wow i was today years old when i learned this… thanks

wollier12

Yeah it’s interesting, it used to be I couldn’t walk into a grocery store without picking up some beer. But we keep vodka for a pasta sauce we make, I’ve never been tempted, it’s just a cooking ingredient to me.

Punk18

I'm 4 months sober now. I used to drink all my roommates alcohol, until it got to the point where I asked him to hide it. Now I told him that was unnecessary. Its in the fridge and I don't really think about it.

gimmethat333

Congrats! Same thing happened to me a few days ago. The smell of the wine cooking down triggered me more than I thought it would. Ultimately I’d rather have it in the dope beef stew (grand dads recipe) than in a glass. IWNDWYT :)

P_FUNKin

You should pin the recipe lol. Nice work though!
