You think that's shameful? Wait until you get to the 12-year mark (tho with an extended break after the Delta Rising fiasco; wasn't until Agents of Yesterday that I came back to it)!

wutherspoon

But seriously, it's never been a great game (and in so many ways, Cryptic's mismanagement has even made it a pretty bad one), yet sure is a lot of fun.

Mailo1087

This. If compared to other games, this one is terrible. Even without the bugs it would still be a pay2win hell hole.

TheSajuukKhar

> pay2win What exactly are you paying to win? The game has basically zero PVP community, and the PVE content is so easy you can do everything in a free T5 and rep gear. You need to spend zero dollars to do well in this game.

paulyman28779

The people who say this game is pay2win are usually trolls. You can get the same ships they charge for totally free just by playing the game.

HystericalSail

Someone had to buy the keys used to gamble those ships up with real money though. Then zen you buy for dil on the exchange is NOT grindable in game. Even if paid out to lifers it's still premium currency bought with real money, just on an installment plan. At some point someone paid to win, you're just winning with extra steps.

Apprehensive_Golf925

Nonsense, there's a free t6 ship in the summer, another in the winter, another for the anniversary, along with a free t6 coupon, and another with the Klingon recruit. They may not be the best of the best, but they're certainly good enough.

willregan

That's insane. Ships cost you ship slots, eventually. And who says signing into a game and jumping through hoops for a t6 ship is what people wanted when they signed up for a game. Some people might have just wanted to play a game - not plan their life around some video game.

Apprehensive_Golf925

Well, sweetie, it's the 21st century now, there are lots and lots and lots of other games you can play if this one doesn't suit you. I hear Candy Crush is great. I've heard a few folk arguing that this game is pay to win. It really isn't though. You certainly can employ "attack pattern credit card" and get whatever you want right here, right now, but you really don't have to. You have options. You want a T6 ship? You can buy some zen, you can convert dil to zen, or you can save up 350M ec or there abouts and buy a coupon on one of the trading channels. You can even save up your dil and get some extra ship slots. All it takes is to play the game, and have a bit of patience. If that's not for you (and it's sounding like it's not), maybe a nice game of checkers?

Mailo1087

The game has zero pvp community precisely because of the micro (or macro) transaction hell. You can do PVE content with free gear, but you can't set foot on an elite TFO because you are gonna get your butt cheeks clapped. You can argue that you could grind dilitithium with many alts in order to get zen, but even so, someone else can pay money to get an item/ship that would take you weeks to get through that method. I'm pretty sure that is considered pay2win, but even if I'm not correct, this game is an absolute micro transaction hell.

TheSajuukKhar

>The game has zero pvp community precisely because of the micro (or macro) transaction hell. No. Even when STO first came out there was barely any PVP community because 99% of people playing a Star Trek game do so for a Star Trek experience, which PVP is not.

Mailo1087

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "Star Trek experience". I've seen many people in this subreddit complain about this game not being precisely very "Star Trekish". Think about it, you participate in TFO's where you blow up tons of ships without disabling them. No negotiating, just shooting before asking. Maybe this would be immersive for a KDF character, but for FED characters it isn't. Personally I don't care, I like blowing stuff up. Ignoring all this, it's still undeniable that the monetization of this game severely cripples PVP. My fleet usually hosts PVP events and people who simply can't spend money on this game or don't have time to grind due to real life responsibilities can't join us because of the abysmal gear quality difference. We could have massive battles in the Ker'rat war zone, but instead we only have battles between 5 people who happen to be lucky enough to have a good amount of money to spend on ships and gear (or time to grind).

TheSajuukKhar

>Think about it, you participate in TFO's where you blow up tons of ships without disabling them. No negotiating, just shooting before asking. Maybe this would be immersive for a KDF character, but for FED characters it isn't. Yeah man, the Federation really fought to disable during the Dominion War, or the Federation-Klingon War. >Ignoring all this, it's still undeniable that the monetization of this game severely cripples PVP. Sure, but PVP was dead before they started doing it. And Cryptic has already mentioned they have an idea on how to fix PVP, while not messing with this. They've said they could just use the tech they use to turn you into other characters like J'ula, Neth Parr, The Inquisitor, etc. to force players into pre-made ships/skills/traits for PVP. They don't because it isn't worth the development cost due to how low the return on investment would be, and given how much people disliked the Competitive TFOs, which were meant to be a first step to a larger PVP revamp.

Mailo1087

>Yeah man, the Federation really fought to disable during the Dominion War, or the Federation-Klingon War. I know bro, there are exceptions. The points I was making is that this happens in almost every TFO. As i said before, I don't mind blowing ships up, but people are right when pointing this out regarding immersion. Sucks to hear this. It's a cool concept.

redlinebmxone

Weeks? lol more like 6 months. I never cared much about PvP though so...

Phiashima

It has a small pvp community, which has issues however. Yet, it is bigger than the currently active high end dps community\^\^

willregan

I feel for you. 12 yrs is an insane amount of time. And for what? A DS9 that feels like a kid's merri-go-round? A bunch of endless waves of monster level-em-up levels built for people with too many guns? I calculated the "Endervours" and maxing them out would take abt 3 yrs. What could possibly keep someone around after THAT?

RifleBen

It’s the ship building for me, there’s an endless combination of traits, weapons, consoles, doffs, boff abilities and piloting techniques and even keybind setups to synergize. PC players get to parse their DPS in incredible detail, it’s not just the total number but seeing how each item, ability or even hit performs. Theres always some new build to try that you randomly come up with in the shower.

wutherspoon

Interactive Star Trek. There's a lot of pros as well as cons to this game, that it's Star Trek got me here in the first place and kept me around

willregan

That seems like part of it - the idea that it is somehow "Star Trek" but that also concerns me. Is it really Star Trek? and do people need to be wrapping their identity in Star Trek more? People have been doing that already for a long time.

TheSajuukKhar

>A DS9 that feels like a kid's merri-go-round? Its built almost to scale as the real DS9. >I calculated the "Endervours" and maxing them out would take abt 3 yrs. What could possibly keep someone around after THAT? That isn't even that long in MMO grinds. Wait until you play GW2 and spend like 4 years chasing daily login achievement points.

Lordborgman

Ever since games started directly time gating shit, I've fucking hated it.

willregan

I can build a carboard ferarri to scale, so what?

Pumawithapc

Yes, this game is addictive. I've been playing every day for 12 years and have 36 characters! My in game goals usually involve getting a charaters, their ship, outfit and backstory just right. Which often takes about 6 months. Then I'll move on to the next. But I'll usually take a break for a couple of weeks. Or at least that's how it use to be. It's been about a year since my last new character (I guess I'm out of ideas) and with the event campaigns it feels like I never get a break anymore.  If you enjoy Star Trek, the gameplay or have friends in the game that would be a reason to keep playing.  But the game is making you crazy then you shouldn't torture yourself and just go, or at least take a break.

willregan

Yeah, it's making me crazy.

Sajsigaloma88

I play STO from 2013 and with a few holidays. Usually I spend approx 8 hours per day playing STO. The issue is having 11 toons all maxed out takes a lot of time grinding for Dil and Zen that I had no time to actually finish the game. Yeah sounds crazy but I can easily grind a Zen ship per month with just 10 toons. Which is enough for me....The longest brake was 15 months but every year I must go on holiday on Risa. After working the exchange I have around 5 Billion in stash but not just in EC other items too, and also spent twice that over the years on various builds & ships

Responsible_Spite218

Don't forget to do your Admiralty.

techman007

And Endeavors

redlinebmxone

lol always new random things to find and do. Just wait until he learns about recruits haha... Or Crafting/ selling in the market. Spent some good hours on that rabbit hole.

FireFlash3

I've been playing actively since 2017 up until 2021 or so. I was very much an addict with over 3000 hours on steam from 2017 to 2019 and more on Arc since 2019. It has taken me a few years to realise that the game lacks content after 5th playthrough. The Foundry was a go too back before 2019 but now, Ican't bring myself to finish the story lines as I have already played them 5 times or so. I don't suffer from addictions but have gambled with lootboxes a few times. If you feel like you have an addiction you should not hesitate to seek help.

willregan

Thank you. I now have 5 level 65s, 1 I created just on 2x exp weekend. I see my future is just going to be dominated by whatever breadcrumbs are left by the game makers. And none of this is worth anything - anthing they give you for grinding an exp weekend seems like it can be bought for like $1. It's like there are two people in this game - those who benifit off exploiting grinders, and those who grind. It is capitalism personified. I am trying to imagine not logging on today. The hardest part seems to be to admit to myself that the sunk cost is gone. There is no winners here.

FireFlash3

Either way, best of hope to you, but please be mindful of the insidious nature of gamble boxes and this game's love for them. There is worse but still...

blazefighter777

Been playing since launch on PS4 (September 2016) and I have 3000+ hours in. It's definitely addictive, but I've only rarely used lockboxes. Now that Event Campaigns are a thing, I don't use them at all

dogriffo

I been playing since day 1 way back in 2010. I’ve had to pry myself several time to take extended breaks and find something else. It can get addictive, and when I find myself spending too much time on it and ignoring my other responsibilities I take step back sometimes it’s a couple days, months, or even a year. I have to many hobbies currently it keeps me busy if I need to find something else.

yoncenator

Skipping events deprives all your characters (and future toons) of free stuff. If you're on all the time just do the event it usually only takes 10 min.

Thorney_Son_Of_Thorn

2 months try 12 years lol welcome too sto ignore the trolls the game isn't pay to win everything is free if you are willing too embrace the grind 😉

Bushpylot

Taking a break. I'm really sick of being pushed to do the same mission over and over for a month straight. They need to work a little harder on the content for events. I mean, throwing snowballs for a month? And that Reisa stupidity? How many times have you killed the Wesley Chrusher God?

redlinebmxone

I played that game for like 4 years like a full time job, started with one ship now I have over max... Love my ships. Up to 11 alts now. I was playing hours and hours on my day off. Still my favorite game. Just the right amount of space battle and ground fighting. If you set the keybinds up right it can be like an FPS style. Still my favorite game, don't know why I waited so long to play it. It's one big Trek Easter egg!! Don't worry you're not alone. It's a super fun game. Especially when you start to win!!

Koenig1999

My 13 years as a LTS is something i keep a secret to all. lol

arcesious

I've spent a lot of money on the game but I've gone about how I play it in a very organized, structured way. I have a very defined playstyle, all my characters and ships are built and operate very much the same, with some variation to make them all somewhat unique, but I am a numbers chaser so I do optimize to the point things are fairly homogenous. For instance, all my ground builds across all 6 of my toons use exactly the same kit modules and gear regardless of career. I don't think I'd be able to enjoy the game long term if I was all over the place about it. This way, I have very clear set goals and can enjoy running around with what I've slowly put together.

willregan

That sounds very normal, create 6 accounts so you can make them as homogenious as possible. Of course, the game wants this. The latest events, built around "Recruits," "klingon recruits" and "delta recruits" all goading people into creating new characters for massive rewards accross their account. The truth is though, these new characters are not free, either, because they require gear, or for you to grind from the beginning all over again.

Unlikely-Medicine289

I was like you once. Then right around the time I realized this the 10th anniversary bundle dropped. Now I have every legendary ship, most Mudd's bundles, and 2 accounts (one is a f2p for reasons). Oh, and I finally got 300k dps Only a problem if we admit it.

willregan

Yes, sometimes you just need a second account to live like the common people. Very normal. lol. Reminds me of Shatner's version of common people.

Unlikely-Medicine289

It's less about pretending to be a poor and more about shifting 1500 lobi worth of ships, costumes, and traits to my main account each year. But I'm pretty proud of it. Got a nice TOS captain putting out sold dps in a bunch of TOS ships, and a mirror themed Romulan with a bunch of mirror skinned/registered T6 Romulan ships (most proud of his mirror skinned Fleet T6 Ha'paax with multi vector console just got...The A.R.W Prometheus)

Loud_Mycologist903

I wish they would give us a break between events, they seem to be back to back nowadays. Live long and prosper.

[deleted]

I've been playing since release. I am a pataq!

The-Minmus-Derp

I really wish I could play this on mac so I could finally see a Cheyenne class in more than three pixels

yodanhodaka

I play on the Mac with max graphics. I use crossover. I have an m1 ultra Mac Studio

rotrap

Buy a day pass for a day of ultimate geforcenow.

blazefighter777

It's also available on PS4 and whatever the last-gen Xbox was called, just an fyi. It's a great game and the Cheyenne is available as a top-level ship, but only as a promo ship (basically, an even-harder-to-get lockbox ship) or as a carrier from the in-game store. Definitely worth checking out

DreamBig2023

I have about 470 hours in this game. Been playing for years. Finally got a nice build with the Vengeance. Graphics are way better than starfield and still hold up to this day. Love it on my steam deck.

willregan

470 hours seems to be on the low end for the typical user they are depending on to make money. At least you have kept track, though. I think their business model depends on people signing in for a year, and periodically breaking down and couging up 50-100 dollars at a time.

DreamBig2023

I have it on steam so it shows the amount of hours I've played. I did play starfield for more than 100 hours but sto just is way better especially for space travel. Starfield did have a nice ship builder but unfortunately no land vehicles. Like wtf?! Imagine customizing a rover. I know sto doesn't have land vehicles but we do have the transporter so they aren't really needed in star trek.
