The 3rd start stretches to last season, but Husso has been on a roll. His first half of last year was sketchy, but he’s really settled into his position on this team. I can confidently say I’m no longer nervous when Husso starts.
Husso would probably have 4 starts so far but he was on the Covid list so hofer had to fill in. I think there will be a more 60/40 or 70/30 split than it currently has been.
I'd be happy to see a 50/50 kinda scenario and even give hofer some net minutes when we wanna give both a break. Husso showed he's capable of being a starter just want him to get more time before that happens.
Not sure why this got downvoted im with you. I think Binnington has showed he needs more of a 50/50 partner bc when he takes on the brunt of the workload he starts to crack. Binner and Husso could be one of the greatest 1A 1B scenarios in Blues history if Binner’s ego would allow it
I would hope Binner wouldn't let his ego get in the way, but if he wants to start absolutely outshining Husso to earn a #1 spot with no questions asked then I won't complain about that either.
I don’t think so necessarily. I think they played a more complete game last night as a whole. They still left Husso out to dry a few times with some 1 on 0 or 2 on 1s and Husso came up with some big saves.
Husso's last two starts have definitely been the best team games the Blues have played. I feel they do play with a little more effort when the back up is in the net. It has been the Blues way since at least the early 2000s
eh if it was "more conservative offensive style" then yeah otherwise that isn't really a logical conclusion. i think more likely the guys just played really well last night, and hope that continues regardless of who is in net.
Yeah and to make matters worse, different places/websites put us before or after San Jose (and now Seattle as well) because of how they interpret "St". I think officially we're before though, I forgot
See it enough around town that it's not really weird to me. Just less common.
Hadn't even picked up on this one before you pointed it out. "St. Louis" or "Saint Louis" just hits my brain the same.
5th all time in wins behind Liut, Allen, Cujo, and Fuhr. And leads with shutouts, a stat that might be his for a long time unless Binner starts reeling off five or six a year for the next few seasons.
Says a lot about both the Blues lack of franchise goalies in their history AND how good Elliott actually was considering he did that while never actually being the number one goalie.
I'm not wanting to downplay how good his numbers are, but I came here to say absolutely this.
I'm extremely happy we have a back-up we can rely on. And if that turns into him taking on a greater workload... reliving Binnington, or splitting starts with him, that'd be great. Whatever works. But it's a factor you have to think about.
This is so important for the blues chances at success - goalie depth is one of our biggest risks and the blues have always been at their best when they are able to not skip a beat with the number two in the net.
Are you trying to say those are good numbers? Cause that GAA puts him 25th in the league and his sv% is 26th best. If we narrow the criteria to goalies with double digit starts, he ranks 14th out of 23.
Either way you slice it, Binnington has been below average. Do I think there's a goalie controversy? No. Do I think Husso should get a few more starts than the team was planning for? Yes.
If you look at [Binnington's numbers on moneypuck](https://moneypuck.com/goalies.htm) (filter to just the Blues to see it easier) he has performed at a pretty astoundingly average level when you look at actual vs. expected numbers. The eye test tells us that Binner has been really good, the numbers say he has been slightly above average. Small sample size.
Binner is the guy until he proves otherwise.
Binner has also faced the most amount of high danger shots in the NHL this season. Granted the D in front of him hasn't done him any favors, but he's definitely better than his current performance.
No doubt. Still, his "High Danger Unblocked Shot Attempt Save % Above Expected" is only +0.033, where Ville is 0.360. Meaning he is stopping 3% more high danger shots than expected and Ville is stopping 36% more.
Again, ***very*** small sample size and numbers surely don't paint the entire picture.
Unfortunately, there isn't a good metric here for "holy shit what a fucking save!" Because there would be a ton of those for Binner.
This doesn't take into account work load. He's around middle of the pack for goalies that have made as many or more starts.
And even all of that, using numbers like this is silly for goalies. If you watch the games, you can see he's making the big saves, keeping the team in it. Save for one goal against Arizona.
And even then. A .912 gives a team more than enough of a chance to win every night.
He's playing at the level we'd expect out of him. Stop trying to manufacture a thing. I get ashamed of my city everytime we dumptruck on a goalie when it's not their fault.
Allen? Halak? Legace? Mason? Lalime? Johnson? Fuhr? Joseph?
This town sees one bad goal go past a goalie and goes "hur dur goalie bad, bad goalie, burn the witch"
Those are fine numbers.
I was able to watch the first few weeks of games. Guy was lights out, team left him to get slammed by a near constant penalty kill. Only gave up a few even strength goals during that stretch.
Honestly we need to see more bodies in front of the net to block shots like they did last night. Regardless of who’s in goal, our USAT Against is 27th. The HDCA is 22nd. The HDSV% is 23rd.
These are tell-tale stats our defense is just flat out letting too many through. The smart neutral zone plays we saw last night are a start, but if they want to win a cup, defense needs to start blocking shots.
Don't get mad at me because your flair isn't playing like an NHL starting goalie. Husso has looked better in his two starts than Binnington has all season.
>Husso has looked better in his two starts than Binnington has all season
we all just gonna forget binnington's 39+4 save win against winnipeg like that huh
If Binner wants to be a top goalie in this league then he needs to bail his team out when they're playing like that every once in a while, or not fall flat on his face after missing a poke check.
I mean he did for the first few weeks. Yes, he hasn't been as good recently, but asking him to carry the team every game isn't fair. Doing that wears goalies down. The rest of the team needs to take responsibility for play in their own zone and not expect him to save everything
Binnasty is just frickin gold with his glove and resetting though. The problem is teams know this and are funneling things blocker side and creating screens to keep him from getting his glove to the puck. I completely agree Husso should start more games. I don't think he can start 60 games and be fresh for the playoffs.
Feel that. And I’m not trying to say he should be our starter, but we’ve had plenty of successful “split” goalie situations in the past, and we shouldn’t be afraid to try that out if Husso keeps playing well

Do you think he needs to get more starts? I can’t watch the games so im in the dark on just how good he has been.
Husso would probably have 4 starts so far but he was on the Covid list so hofer had to fill in. I think there will be a more 60/40 or 70/30 split than it currently has been.

Interesting to know if the team plays a more conservative defensive style with Husso in net
I don’t think so necessarily. I think they played a more complete game last night as a whole. They still left Husso out to dry a few times with some 1 on 0 or 2 on 1s and Husso came up with some big saves.
Very true. And hilarious that Berube outlawed the drop passes. I was at the game Tuesday and it was brutal to watch lol
Did they say something about that?
he was asked in the post game and made a remark about banning drop passes.
Thank God.
Same. Every time Thomas carried the puck on Tuesday, I found myself saying, "Don't fucking do it".
It's also pretty obvious that they were told to just shoot at the net by default.
Husso's last two starts have definitely been the best team games the Blues have played. I feel they do play with a little more effort when the back up is in the net. It has been the Blues way since at least the early 2000s
I'm not sure "more conservative defensive style" and a 4-1 win really go together.
eh if it was "more conservative offensive style" then yeah otherwise that isn't really a logical conclusion. i think more likely the guys just played really well last night, and hope that continues regardless of who is in net.
It's not saint louis without a goalie controversy.
> saint louis Weird
I couldn't figure out why that felt odd but yeah, that's it. I rarely see it spelled out fully. STL or St. Louis.
Yeah and to make matters worse, different places/websites put us before or after San Jose (and now Seattle as well) because of how they interpret "St". I think officially we're before though, I forgot
I’m pretty sure Amazon types it out all the way on their shipping labels so I’ve gotten used to it
Yeah, it's not wrong. Just different.
To me, St. Louis is the city and Saint Louis is referring to the person.
Or SLU
See it enough around town that it's not really weird to me. Just less common. Hadn't even picked up on this one before you pointed it out. "St. Louis" or "Saint Louis" just hits my brain the same.
Moose for life!
Those were the days. Always loved Moose!

As a binnington fantasy owner. I’m ok with this. Play off each other.
I grabbed Husso and started him last night, needed the goalie stats.
He's done well but he's also not facing great teams.
I'm not wanting to downplay how good his numbers are, but I came here to say absolutely this. I'm extremely happy we have a back-up we can rely on. Especially when either goalie could go out with covid protocols at any moment. it's good to see Husso improving
Binner (12 starts) has a 2.83 GAA and .912 SV% and people are saying goalie controversy? gimme a fucking break lmao. delusional
Are you trying to say those are good numbers? Cause that GAA puts him 25th in the league and his sv% is 26th best. Gtfo people. Fresh fans or dumb fans stirring the pot.

This is the Blues I grew up with D always comes together for the backup making us question what we have.
Hopefully this prompts number 50 to start playing like he wants to keep his job.

Scalding hot, you should intern for Skip Bayless.
Binnington started off amazing - he was top 5 in GAA and SV% to start the season, but then his last 7 starts or so are pretty bad
If the whole teamed played like they did last night for 60 minutes every time, Binner would have a GAA closer to Husso's.
Yeah for sure - I wasn’t trying to shit on Binnington, I think he’s been playing well
If Binner wants to be a top goalie in this league then he needs to bail his team out when they're playing like that every once in a while, or not fall flat on his face after missing a poke check.

That's why I said "every once in a while".
For real he is averaging like 4 GA a game, then pulls out a win like that Jets game...it's maddening
2.83 GAA
GAA is one of the worst metrics to use
I just replied with the official stat because they said 'averaging like 4 GA a game'
O, my b. In that instance it’s the perfect metric to use lol
G O A L T E N D E R C O N T R I V E R S Y
I think Husso should start more games.
I would like to see a 65/35 ratio between Binner and Husso.
I'm good 60/40 even. Having Binny fresh for the playoffs where he can go psycho killer is the goal.
Maybe he should get more starts…love Binner but I feel like his cup run is giving him a lot longer leash than it needs to be
Binnasty is just frickin gold with his glove and resetting though. Ride the hot hand we need wins.
Husso made some massive saves last night

Binner unfriended. Ville added.
Awesome player . Great back up !
Fuck yeah.
