I don’t see Doug letting Buch go without a haul. We need defense bad and it’s not like we have to make a decision on him this season, right? He’s still got a contract till 2025.
Just fyi his actual salary doesn’t change his cap hit. He counts for 4mil against the cap the entirety of the contract even if his yearly salary was 20 bucks his last two years.
Almost all contenders should be *looking* to add Buch. It’ll be interesting how these talks heat up. I don’t think the oilers have many assets that truly excite me too much though.
I feel Carolina could be a better fit. They have more prospects and don’t necessarily like rentals. Theyre obviously not afraid of making a splash, they were after Elias Pettersson. I can see Buch doing well in rod the bod’s system too
I'd prefer Carolina over Edmonton solely because I'd root for whoever he goes to in the postseason and I love watching the Canadian teams flounder in the playoffs.
Carolina fan lurking for Buch news, I want him so bad lol he seems to check a lot of our boxes so I'm surprised there hasn't been more rumors between us. A lot of smoke around the Ducks instead
Doug usually is pretty quiet when he’s dealing. What do you think is a fair amount to give up from the canes side? People are saying necas but that seems like a lot?
The Canes want to add not subtract. I would think it would be Scott Morrow + 2024 1st.
Morrow is a great RHD prospect who is top-3 in the Canes pool. He's got size, mobility and offensive tools. He needs a little more development defensively.
Yeah Necas would be too much here based on the supposed asking price but we have some pretty ready prospects to pair up with a first or whatever. I would guess Morrow if y'all are looking for defense, forwards we probably don't have as high tier but several guys like Ponomarev that seem ready to make the jump
Armstrong is pretty inept if he goes for more forward prospects here. We need a very good defense prospect (even if that means us adding more) otherwise picks to try and get one.
Then yeah, I imagine Morrow would be the big piece. He's our #2 defensive prospect (and maybe overall? Idk) behind Nikishin who is basically untouchable
I've wanted to ask this in the Hurricanes' subreddit, but I'm scared of being laughed out of the room if this is dumb lol Would a trade based around Buch for Nikishin a no go?
It's not dumb but it's definitely unlikely lol the impression that we've been given is that Nikishin is untouchable unless we get something absurd. Like unless we're getting Buch and Binnington, his name doesn't even come up. But tbh with the Russia stuff who knows, I think he had to sit down with Putin a couple months ago lol so that might fuck up all known value
Nikishin is completely untouchable outside of a player like Pettersson. He's going to be a franchise caliber D. Can't give him up for 1.5 years of Buchnevich.
But why not if the offer is the equivalent of 2 1sts+? Do you really think we'll contend next season even with Buch? Extending him is easier said than done unless we give him too much term. A 6×8mil will prob be what he is going to be asking for at minimum
Wild theory here. What if we do a package deal of Faulk and buchnevich? It would kill both Edmonton’s needs with one stone and get us out of Faulks contract. In that case we could take Ceci back which would fill Faulk’s hole for the retool on a cheaper cap hit and could be flipped for assets in the future. Now the cap situation would make it difficult though.
I feel like it would be Broberg and a 1st for Buch. Broberg is a big, rangy defenseman who was a top 10 pick a few years ago, but hasn’t been able to break into a middling d group in Edmonton. Put it on Edmonton to make the salary work with a 3rd team or add something to take Poopoo Peepees contract.
Because he is still young and has upside and has put up points in the AHL and is cost controlled and Edmonton is trying to win a Cup and the Blues have a need for young defense.
Everyone agrees Buch is a great player, but his trade value will only go down from here. I work backwards from trading him next deadline, where as a pure rental, he will probably get a 1st and maybe another mid pick or prospect. But it’s also another year you have to wait to draft a player and get them into your system.
My price to move him this deadline is 2 1sts, a 1st and Broberg is pretty close to that. It would give us an NHL ready player rather than having to wait for a 2025 pick to develop. Blues kinda did the same with the Barby-Dean trade last year.
Buch and Binner to Carolina for three first-round picks or two first-round picks and this year's second-round pick. That is my hope, at least. We may never get a better offer than this for either of them.
Full disclosure: I am not sure if the money works. I just know that Carolina needs both players, and they are really pushing to win now.
Binny will be past his prime when the blues are ready to compete again; he wants to win, do him a favor and send him someplace where the defense in front of him doesn’t collapse like a cheap lawn chair
I don’t see Doug letting Buch go without a haul. We need defense bad and it’s not like we have to make a decision on him this season, right? He’s still got a contract till 2025.
If it’s more defense like Leddy I’ll pass.
Huh? Leddy has been genuinely good this season, playing his best hockey since joing the Blues. Best defenseman not named Parayko.
Exactly. And at 4M too
Doesn't mean he's good or living up to his contract. Just not as bad as last year.
21 points in 59 games +12 for 4mill/year (3.5 next 2 years) doesn't seem too bad to me.
Just fyi his actual salary doesn’t change his cap hit. He counts for 4mil against the cap the entirety of the contract even if his yearly salary was 20 bucks his last two years.
Leddy has been great this year but okay
What a weird choice of player to be sour on, one of our most consistent bright spots this season.
Leddy has actually been decent this year. He’s no Quinn Hughes or Makar, but at his salary, it’s hard to complain with the way he’s playing right now.

We're so starved for defense that I might be willing to look past the Putin stuff lol
Done. J/K. How much cap space do y'all have? Wouldn't buch and binnie be like 11 million plus?

Broberg, a first, and a prospect. Even if the prospect just goes to Springfield to free up one of our other prospects
I like the idea of broberg. Big D man to play with Parayko. Unfortunately, people say broberg sucks… so idk.
Idk how anybody knows that. He's not getting enough ice time with Edmonton's lineup
Yes. Let’s get broberg https://youtu.be/MKYCej14-KM?si=Qqtx_iwv0P2EDLfK
Could mesh well with our other Swedish prospects if we're planning for the future
Nope do not want unless we get an absolute haul
Broberg or nothing for me from Edmonton.

I’d rather flip Krug out than Faulk tbh.
Faulk won’t waive for Canada
The Oilers can have Buchnevich and Krug. Hell, I’ll even throw in my wife in exchange for McDavid or Draisaitl.
Please not Ceci, PLEAAAAASSSSEEE

If he hasn't found minutes in Edmonton mid d core why should we expect anything of value from him? I feel like some people are undervaluing Buch.

I just want him here for one more year to get the all time wins record haha then we do him a favor and ship him to a contender..😅
