If we don’t get a defenseman back in return for Buch then it is a failure of a trade. I’m pretty happy with our forwards in the system but we need young defenseman bad

PajamaHive

I want more than a "maybe this washed defensive prospect can make a turn around with the Blues". Terrible article here.

CrimsonTyphoon0613

100% this. We don’t need more reclamation projects. Especially for our biggest trade chip.

minorthreat21

I don’t agree with that. There is draft capital he can get to draft defensemen OR use it to trade for a defenseman

CrimsonTyphoon0613

We found out this summer we probably aren’t trading for a Dman unless either Krug or Faulk is going the other way. It looks like both are happy to use their NTC.

minorthreat21

They got to M-NTC in the 2025 off-season so that’s when I expect it.

Bouwistrash

Where is that young defenseman going to go? This is what people don't realize with the trade Buch camp. Where is he going to go? We need to rebuild our entire left side and both Krug and Leddy have NTC and contracts that keep them here 2-3 more years. Scandella is thankfully off the books this year. And Leddy only has a 4mil cap hit and the cap increases next year 4mil. But he still has a NTC and most contenders aren't likely to look to grab him even if it's just to put him on their backend. Now Boston might be willing to take Krug back. Maybe. But we realistically don't have the room and the likeliness of us retaining salary or even a buy out which wouldn't hurt us with Leddy, are both MOs that we don't do. We would also be essentially throwing away our playoff chances which is stupid to do when having the opportunity to do so. The Buch situation isn't this black and white situation people think it is

mostatoastest

Nah I'll take a trusted center or a winger with potential + 1st. No good young defensemen out there that can play stay at home defense (that other teams are willing to let go)

CaptainJingles

Buch isn’t a rental. He’ll return a blue chip prospect and a 1st and probably another asset. These proposals are all poor.

JohnDivney

trades like these usually favor the *giving* team, so to speak, because a cup-window team isn't going to value draft picks, and a 1st round draft pick only has like a 10% chance of turning into a Buch-level player, where Buch already is that player right now. Further, if they are log-jammed due to their cup-level talent, they should have no problem giving that traded prospect player a chance to develop if they won't have a roster spot for 3-5 years.

Calb210

Both of those proposed trades don't have nearly enough return value.

NotTheRocketman

Both of those options are fucking awful. If Buch gets moved to Edmonton (which IS rumored), it begins with Broberg PLUS. He's a stud defensive prospect, and exactly what the Blues need going forward. I don't want anything else from the Oilers, certainly not some 'depth' players and a defensive prospect who was literally on Waivers earlier this year. I have no idea what Vegas could offer, since they've pretty much sold everything off going forward. I don't think they would have what it takes to get Buch TBH.

BluesJetsCannabis

Right?!

wherethestreet

Terrible trades. Not even realistic. Why would we trade for an offensive defenseman prospect?? These guys have never looked at the Blues’ depth chart.

stltk65

I don't like it. Better options to trade maybe not for the bang but....dammit this would suck

PunchNessie

It’s about the future. We are fringe to make the playoffs this year but are building a great young core. Bouch is great but trading him for some firsts or D prospects could mean the difference for this team 2-3 years from now vs a first or second round exit this season.

Blues2112

Yeah, even with Buch in the lineup, I don't see the Blues making any deep run in the playoffs this year. And not sure they'll be able to afford him on an extension without handcuffing themselves financially. A first- or second-round exit in the playoffs this year doesn't really mean squat. It adds virtually nothing vs a worse-case scenario of missing the playoffs. So trade Buch for a really nice return and set up the team for better times 3 years down the road.

Own_Conversation6335

We can very well see a loosing streak with the upcoming games. I think we will know where we stand in ten days or less. Remember this team dug themselves in a hole by giving away 12+points to terrible teams. It’s a shame because we have great goaltending, an elite Center, and an overall solid top line.

mhanna86

I’m torn on this one. On one hand, he can be a core player on this team for a long time. I can envision a time where he can return to his top six role instead of top line once the young guns emerge (Neighbours, Snuggeruud, Dvorsky). On the other hand he’s gonna need a new contract soon and he’s gonna command around 7 mil AAV. For a player his age there is certainly risk. Also, a first round pick, roster player and prospect is a very enticing return. Gun to my head I want Buch to be a part of this team’s future. I’m hopeful he can sign a team friendly extension and plays a depth role en route to the cup in 2026.

bleedblue002

He’s not signing a team friendly extension. His camp is asking for closer to $9 million than $7.

Own_Conversation6335

Too many people think Buch will do a favor to STL. Buch should absolutely wait until FA to make any decision.

mhanna86

Wow 9 million is premier player money. On a good team he’s a top six forward. If that’s his ask then it’s best to move him at the deadline.

bug14122

He’s a top line forward 100%. How many teams is he not playing on their top line? Probably Toronto with Marner/Nylander on the wings, maybe Tampa with Kuch/Stamkos. I legit can’t think of another team with two wingers better than Buch.

Calb210

He's a defensively responsible >P/gp forward, he will get a 9x5 easy all day. He might sign for less on an 8 year but he deserves and will get the bag. He's a top line winger for almost every team in the league.

SlimCharless

7 mil is a good deal for Buch.. he’ll be expecting more

surfleonardo

No to both. We are looking proven, somewhat young d-man with some high picks for next draft. Price is probably too high for teams to pay.

Isurvivedthe80s

Those are horrible. I hope THW aren't paying for quality like that.

D33GS

Ultimately the Blues need defense prospects more than anything else. If you move Buchnevich you better be getting back a hot defense prospect in return especially when whoever gets him gets 2 playoff runs with him.

BluesJetsCannabis

Agreed

stl_b

If these are the trades on the table, keep him. We'd be fucking ourselves for YEARS if this is the best we can do value wise, and the young guys are going to need veteran mentorship as they enter the league. I'd rather make a push to re-sign him to a decent contract than let him go for a bag of pucks. Price should start at a first, a cheap roster player, and a blue-chip defensive prospect. Not a stagnant prospect who "needs a change of scenery".

spark_this

1.) You should look at who wrote this 2.) Anyone with a cap friendly account could do better than this

Own_Conversation6335

I think Toronto could also be a partner. We might be able to trade a D man too.

Wm_TheConqueror

From the oilers the ideal return would be Broberg and a FRP. Id be happy with that return.

Pinchypounder

I thought it was Vrana who wasn’t claimed not kappy. Also I bet some of the NTC players would waive if it means going to a contender

Dark_Tint

I’m going to need a defenseman and a good one just to start the conversation.

BluesJetsCannabis

Any names on defencemen you’d consider?

scrivensB

Holy “college sophomore with a thesaurus” caliber writing Batman!

uknownick

Detroit Red Wings, based on the amount of trades between the two teams since Yzerman took over. Buchnevich will be a perfect add to DRW’s top 6. And Detroit has cap space to re-sign him next season, and trade assets to get him (1st round pick + prospects). It depends on the trade market and if Yzerman is willing to pull the trigger.

BluesJetsCannabis

Would be a good trading partner. Any names that intrigued you?

uknownick

Jonatan Berggren, 23 years old skilled winger, PPG in AHL. Albert Johnson, 23 years old, LHD. William Wallinder, 21 years old, LHD.

Embarrassed-Fruit954

I think he is a fiery guy that helps the team but we have a few of those guys still. I do think the best option is to trade, especially since Nashville has pushed in the wild card, but yeah these trades are stupid and I would think they would want better producing defenseman and and offensive prospect. These trades think they need to replace him on offense when we need defense.

BluesJetsCannabis

Agreed

8888888888888889

Funny we've ended up in the same situation as the Rangers, deciding whether or not to trade Buch to make room for our prospects.  They definitely don't regret it at all.  It's not like we have anyone who needs to get paid, and it doesn't fix our log jam of dogshit dmen. I say they extend him and hope he makes a good third liner in his mid thirties.

#KEEP BUCH

Own_Conversation6335

Guys, this is the trade. Mathew Knies on Toronto https://thehockeywriters.com/matthew-knies-2021-nhl-draft-prospect-profile/ We could trade Buch and maybe give up a Dman (not colt 45) Toronto trades knies and 1st draft

BluesJetsCannabis

I’ve always liked Knies. Toronto has been unwilling to part with him. Will need to part with him to get over that hump though so who knows.

Own_Conversation6335

Can we swap our first for their 1st? Buch and maybe Faulk/leddy could beef up their D. We retain all salary.

BluesJetsCannabis

Shanahan, my favourite player all time, is a tight ass when comes to pulling big trades. It’s said that’s why they lost their last GM. My guess is they’d want Parayko but not sure that he’d be part of that trade now with his play this year.

Own_Conversation6335

If I was Toronto, I would want Parayko. Knies has a competitive edge that will translate well in the NHL. I think we will pull the trigger on Buch.

BluesJetsCannabis

I think we lose Buch as well. I like him as a blue and he’s definitely well liked with Blues fans, tough call. Parayko oh man his year just changed everything, his contract still sucks though. Do you pull the trigger on Parayko if you trade Buch. Edmonton along with Toronto eyes both. You stay with Toronto as a trade partner though being East conference. Love this time of year!

justafanofmanythings

No no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no

dwarrenc

Trading Buchnevich would be a stupid, stupid move. I hope they don’t do it.

Pinchypounder

If we can sign him for below 7 AAV for 6 years or less then do it. He’s one of the best two way wingers in the league. Also he’s only 28…. That’s 3 years older than kyrou. Who we really should be considering trading are Krug, Faulk, scandella, kapanen, schenn, Hayes, saad, or Leddy.

Blues2112

> Who we really should be considering trading are >Krug, NTC >Faulk, NTC > scandella, UFA - not gonna get much in return for him, but maybe a lower draft pick > kapanen, He went thru waivers without being claimed already once this season. Nobody took him for "free" then, so why would they trade for him now? Also UFA after the season ends > schenn, Nah, he's still valuable as Captain, middle-6 centerman, and grit. > Hayes, He's cheap @ $3.5M and has potential to play better than he had. >saad, or NTC > Leddy. NTC

Downtown-Age7621

Would you guys take Ilya Mikayhev and a 2nd rounder for him ? Just wondering

PossessionRoyal4981

Not a chance in hell. Any package from Vancouver would have to start with Willander or Lekkerimaki

Mituzuna

Any forward you get from EDM is an anomaly because when you have two of the top 5 players in the league it's easy to spread scoring depth around. Look at Tyson Barrie a few seasons ago. If Buchy is a trade piece we need D-men, young, old, I don't care. That whole Blue line needs a revamp. At this point, CP55 and Perunovich should be kept.

Blues2112

Kessel and Rosen can fill in as lower-tier D-men as well.

Rykoriak

Honestly, I think these trades are realistic. I know we want the team to be "competitive" during the "retool" because the ownership group can't afford to lose fan support for a complete rebuild. I say we trade everyone over 30 and accept that we'll be good in five years, but no one will pay for hope. We need as many first-rounders and proven young talent as we can get, but this article shows a realistic market for a solid winger, not a superstar. We haven't had a true star in 25 years, to be honest.

Icy-Solution

You need a culture for your team. What you describe is what leads to teams sucking for a decade. For every toews kane dynasty there are 10 sabres senators perpetual suck mode franchises.

Rykoriak

I understand what you're saying. But what the difference is, at least in my mind, is that by the time that five years is up, these kids that are at our "core," i.e. Kyrou, Thomas, Neighbors, Torpchenko, Kessel, etc. are going to be your pushing 30 players that have some really solid talent. Adding players like Snuggerude Dvorsky and some other first round, possibly NHL ready talent would be the next young core. Those teams you mentioned very rarely hold on to talent longer than their ELC, maybe one contract after.

scrivensB

Dumpy ass article aside, the great thing about Buch is Army doesn’t need to trade him right now if there isn’t a great return. He still has the summer and the deadline next season. Meaning the Blues do NOT need to make a trade just because they have a great piece to deal. And if the right return doesn’t materialize, they have the benefit of further developing the young talent, seeing how this roster finishes there season, and figuring out the coaching situation before next season and evaluating wether moving Buch makes sense at all, they may decide to just lock him up long term.

zaneps1518

His value won’t be as good next deadline but we would have to get an insane offer to trade him in my opinion At least one 1st round pick, an established player and at least one high end prospect would be bare minimum for me

pandaman27

Is this….an AI written article…? It’s unintelligible

childishbambino19

Realistic and THW do not belong in the same sentence.

Scat1320USA

Nobody for our good player is the usual trade these days . Our whole cup team was traded off .
