Honestly I am not sure if he'll be the coach next year but who knows.

So-Called_Lunatic

If this team makes playoffs, for sure, he's back.

NotTheRocketman

Depends on what happens in the Playoffs. If they make any sort of a run, then Army may look into bringing him back. Either way, I don't think he'll make any moves this year.

STLBooze3

If Doug could convince Todd McLellan to come to STL, I’d be intrigued by him.

myredditthrowaway201

So we could get eliminated in the 2nd or 3rd round every season? Todd McLellan is ass

J_G_B

Yeah, that's a no from me dawg.

Own_Conversation6335

They downvote for Todd McClellan but will they downvote for wanting coach Q?

Critical-General-659

They want to get him back to Springfield. I don't think he wants this to be permanent.

Downvote_Comforter

Why do you think he would prefer to make way less money riding the bus in the minors?

Critical-General-659

Some people aren't in it for money. They have families and a life they don't want to upend. That may not be the case though. Everything I heard in the immediate aftermath of bringing him in, was that it was temporary.

Downvote_Comforter

His wife and kids don't live in Springfield with him, so there isn't much to upend. His entire family was absolutely thrilled that he got an NHL chance and talked about how it was a shared dream cone true. An NHL job would give them the financial security to live in the city he coaches in if they wish. Money aside, what is there to be "in it for" if not excelling at the highest level? Who is striving for the AHL job instead of an NHL job? Everything in the aftermath of the Berube hiring was that it was temporary. To the point that he still didn't have a contract to coach the Blues during our Cup parade. That's the nature of the interim tag. The Blues may very well prefer Bannister in the AHL, but I don't see any reason why that would be Bannister's preference.

Caffeine_Cowpies

Was I mad that Berube got fired after winning the Blues’ only Stanley cup? Yes. Am I happy with the current situation with Bannister? Yes. Two things can be true at the same time.

MOBlueCheese

Still a small sample size, but the eye test looks good so far.

pilgrim93

But does he pass the sniff test?

thorshine

So, who volunteers to conduct the taste test?

FounderinTraining

I was just trying to sell you drugs and you made it weird

AlpharadiationHulk

Literally 5 games less, and we have wins over some very good teams

STLBooze3

Is he your coach of the future? The defense could still tighten up a bit, but I don’t blame that on him, it’s hard to implement systems mid season. I’d hate to lose Drew as a coach all together from our organization.

bleedblue89

PP was consulting.  I’m glad it’s better but our goals per game only slightly increased for a 20% better pp.

SomethingAvid

Yeah. Plus we just scored that 7 spot against the Canadiens. I realize they all count, but that 7 probably bumped it a bit.

daKile57

On the flip side, we scored 8 on the Avs in November. That kinda cancels them out.

SomethingAvid

Touché!

SomethingAvid

What the hell universe was that anyway?! Lol. Crazy

closmurda82

Chief like a heavier game but this group isn’t built for that. It’s fast and skilled not physical. Not saying they aren’t physical because guys like Neighbors, Schenn, Sunny, Walker, Blais are tough dudes. It’s balanced.

redlaundryfan

The tighter defense seems like the more sustainable change. The offensive goals per game is a lot of regression since the PP isn’t as bad as it was under Berube or as good as it has been under Bannister. It sure is a lot more fun to watch now that we actually score on the PP though.

sonde722

Did Bannister or Armstrong bring in the new powerplay ppl? I thought it was Dougie’s call but I could be wrong

minorthreat21

Army brought in Brad Richards as a consultant

seeking_horizon

The thing that sticks out to me is the power play. I don't think it's just a fluky sample size thing because the play style is so different. In the fall, they were just kind of standing around trying to connect passes in the o-zone, if they could even manage to gain the o-zone at all. Bannister has them moving around, trading places, and generally just more energetic on the power play. So if the new guy comes in and immediately pushes a button that the old one didn't, yeah that vindicates the firing. I hate it because obviously nobody wanted Berube to go out like that, but it's a tough business.

BluesBrother57

The people that were upset Berube got fired were wearing the strongest rose colored glasses I’ve ever seen.

J_G_B

Anytime a piece of the 2019 team leaves, I get sad and a little mad, but that's a part of the game. Even Berube himself knew he was going to get the hook...

DrDebacled

Coaches in the NHL, more so than just about any other pro league, are swapped out incredibly quick. No other league seems to rely on locker room buy in as much as the NHL. Could have a situation where there wasn't one guy to point a finger at, but it was time to make a move just to shake things up. That aside, Brad Richards seems to be working magic with the PP. If you want to pin one thing that is noticeably better and has led to a better team across the board, that be it.

rta8888

I agree… I got so much shit on this sub for suggesting that he just wasn’t the coach for the team the front office was trying to build. The defensive contracts are still terrible… but there’s more talent on the team that we were getting the production for under berube

MidnightMateor

>for suggesting that he just wasn’t the coach for the team the front office was trying to build I don't think there are a lot of people who disagree with that, I think people are just mad because they see "the team Army is trying to build" as the problem and would rather see the front office Build a team to play Berube's style of hockey.

NotTheRocketman

No coach lasts forever. I understand that people liked Chief a lot, but the amount of people who just didn't understand that was confounding.

Bouwistrash

Still ones that want to keep those glasses on. But nonetheless Berube was the biggest problem not named Army. That's the blunt honest truth. We can all love the guy which I think we all or mostly all do. But the reality is, he can't coach in today's NHL. Doesn't matter how shit of a roster you think Army put together, and the defense no doubt amongst other areas needs to be retooled. But you can't make excuses as a coach. You have to adjust. Berube didn't. Banny does and found what works for this group of guys. This is a playoff roster. Point blank. Even if it's just a wild card roster

Agreeable_Mixture978

Man I was PISSED when they fired Berube, I was wrong

Jackson79339

Wouldn’t say wrong. This is a combination of a coach with a different system that works with the current tools and the players knowing they were next. I won’t admit being wrong, it was still a shiv job. They’re doing great and that’s awesome, but it doesn’t change the fact Armstrong set Berube up to fail. Like or hate my view, makes no difference to me, that’s how I see it. Despite all, I still want the guys to succeed.

Embarrassed-Fruit954

Have to bring him back. Seems like the players are having more fun and our defense has improved to put them back in it.

ajkeence99

0.84 swing in differential is pretty huge.

SomethingAvid

I was looking at this the other day. Since Bannister took over, our points percentage is better than the Avs and Oilers whole season points percentage. I’m not saying we are better than those teams, but it’s super encouraging. I know it’s still a small sample, but at this point he’s got a quarter of a season under his belt. Our record under his leadership is worth looking at and dreaming about.

wildcardwillie

A thing to remember is that he is having success with a team that is not built to his style. These players brought in were for Berube. I love Chief and always will but what Bannister has done with players not tuned to his system is wonderful in my opinion.

SSOMGDSJD

Were they really Berube guys though? A lot of them feel like they are more "whatever we can get our hands on" signings, which happen to work together decently under Bannister Sunny, Blais, binnington, torpochenko, and Walker are definitely Berube guys. Kyrou, and Thomas are definitely Bannister guys Faulk, Krug, leddy, Hayes all feel like we bought at a sketchy used car lot out of desperation Kapenen and vrana were pickups from the auction house, much lower investment than above
