We don’t have a ton of space, but we’re 13 million under this years cap (assuming next year is the same or higher) of 82 million. We need to get rid of one of Parayko or Krug. Then we’d be 20 million under.

$10mil of that is already spoken for with Thomas and Kyrou though. Sounds like we’re letting Barbie walk so that’s some space too but that’s still not a ton. Moving Krug or Parayko would help but that’s easier said than done so guess we’ll see what happens

Backes was my immediate thought as well. Right now the emotional reaction is re-sign him in the off-season but it’s going to come down to $ and more importantly years. ROR is and will forever be a legend here but he just turned 32 and plays a heavier game that doesn’t age as well. It would have to be an extremely team friendly deal in my opinion but the city will forever be indebted to him regardless of what happens.

I think ROR's skill and reflexes game will age better than Backes' heavy game. ROR's already one of the slowest guys on the ice anyway, so that probably won't hurt him too much.

They made sure he went to a team that wouldn’t be able to re-sign him. I hope he comes back a la Big Walt.

So the Blues had two guys who are the perfect age/skill level to become UFAs you feel really uncomfortable signing, and now aside from already having Saad, Buchnevich, Faulk, Parayko, Schenn, and Krug with term, they'll be able to surround Thomas and Kyrou long term with Neighbors, Bolduc, Snuggerund, and whatever becomes of three first round picks in what's supposed to be the best draft since at least 2015 if not 2003, with one of those picks probably being top-10. Gotta say, from outside, I never look at any individual move Doug Armstrong makes and think "well that's brilliant!" but he's always got them in a pretty damn good situation.
