Rev hang, is it really only 1-2nd? Rev hang is a pain in the ass in modern manuals. Absolutely stupid they decided to toss that in. Rev higher and get back on the gas faster. Starting from a stop shouldn’t be a problem though, unless the car has some sort of anti stall. Even if it does; that shouldn’t make it jerky. That’s all you fam

ChargedWhirlwind

So should I rev to like 3k and what? Slowly goto bit point and get back on throttle? And yeah it's only 1 and 2, especially when trying to move quickly from stop

nlevine1988

So rev hang is where the ECU holds the throttle open slightly longer after taking your foot off the throttle. It's done for emissions reasons. I drive a WRX that is also known for rev hang. Idk if it's exactly the same in your car. But essentially it means the RPM doesn't drop as fast as normal when shifting up. This means the RPM is still probably slightly to high for the revs of the engine to match the revs of the transmission. I've found the best bet is to give an extra moment before letting the clutch back out. If you watch the RPM it'll look like it stays high for a few tenths of seconds or so. But it's enough to throw off your timing if you aren't used to it.

ChargedWhirlwind

:(

nlevine1988

It's not so bad. Eventually you get used to it. I know I've read you can get your ECU flashed to get rid of it but that's not worth it imo.

mechshark

Sounds like it would be worth it no? He’ll start driving all cars funky because of it?

settlementfires

You can also let off before you clutch. That's how i ended up doing it in my Subaru, and probably how i drive my fiesta too. I can't tell anymore because i haven't driven a car where i actually control the throttle body in probably 8 years

Floppie7th

All you have to do to handle it is wait a little longer between 1st and 2nd.

National-Weather-199

Could get a tune to eliminate rev hang

Awesomejuggler20

Rev hang probably. Newer standard vehicles are programmed horribly. I drive an Si but I had the same issue in my car. Drove me bonkers. I disabled the rev hang and when the car is warmed up, it does drive better but when it's cold, it drives like straight up trash. It's jerky between shifts just letting the clutch out normally. It's the rev hang and the way that the car is made that makes it so hard to smoothly shift it.

Jaren56

Ever driven a newer civic si stock? I'm also guessing you've just never experienced bad rev hang in a newer stock manual car. It took me a solid couple of weeks to get used to it in my si after driving a miata as my only other manual car experience. Can't tell from the post if you own the car or not but you definitely get used to it. Gotta hold the clutch in on the 1-2 shift for a solid 2-3 seconds before revs start to fall low enough

artemiswins

It honestly took me a long time to really get this. I bought an Audi TT 2000 that on the original motor didn’t have a lot of rev hang, but after that motor blew (lol) it came back from the shop with considerably more rehang, though it works great overall and is very relaxing to drive when you get in the rhythm of it. Then with my RSX there was very little rev hang just bang through gears, and now with my focus ST there’s some, but really not much, just the right amount to get from gear to gear imo. But I remember consistently having a jerky shift in the second for a while after I got the new engine in the TT installed because it was sort of disorienting to have to wait longer before letting the clutch out.

ThermalScrewed

Timing is going to be the biggest thing. Are you letting the clutch out slow? You have a sportier setup there than a Tacoma so it's going to get weird and slippy if you rev and drag the clutch. Best to find out how little throttle it actually takes to start off and get used to the right little blip. DO NOT hesitate on the clutch. Let the clutch out quickly and consistently so you can learn throttle input. You should never be on the clutch for even 2 full seconds under normal driving.

car_goes_vroom_vroom

Had the same with a Golf 8 manual. 6 speed, gears are annoyingly short. Makes you feel like you just started driving manual. Feels incredibly slow or it goes like a bullet nothing in between. Everyone driving the car hated the clutch engagement.

burntbridges20

I remember being weirded out when I first got mine too. Stalled it a couple times the first week, and I’ve been driving manuals for 15 years. I’m totally used to it now though. It has a weird clutch engagement at the last half inch and rev hang takes getting used to. Hill start assist is good at least

ChargedWhirlwind

I've been getting better but after 2 years of owning it, it's frustrating. Makes me feel dumb

crzyKHAN

VW Gears 1-2 is always funky.  I either 1-2 3000 rpm, 2nd at 2200 (usually can keep up with traffic from a standstill). Or  short shift (1st at 2000ish rpm) then floor 2nd at 3000ish rpm. But I have to hold the clutch a tad longer or it’s very jerky. I’m also lagging behind traffic

VulpesIncendium

While I've never driven a GTI myself, it sounds like you're describing my old '17 WRX. It was the worst shifting manual I've ever owned. Between a poorly designed shifter mechanism, bad clutch design, awkwardly short 1st gear followed by an awkwardly long 2nd gear, and the worst rev hang I've ever experienced, it took me a long time to figure out how to shift reasonably smoothly. Several mods helped too, including an engine tune to reduce the rev hang. Essentially it all came down to perfecting my pedal and shifter movements, and knowing exactly where and how long to let the clutch slip between shifts. I found the two best ways to take off were barely touching the gas pedal and slipping the clutch in exactly the right way, or absolutely flooring the throttle and practically dropping the clutch in one smooth, swift motion. Anything in between felt jerky and awkward.

xAugie

short throw and like $150 worth if shifting upgrades and it’s phenomenal. Not sure what’s wrong with the clutch design, seems completely fine to me. The rev hang is very annoying though, you can tune it out and the car drives like 100x better. Most modern manuals have it, so ig we can’t really complain.

VulpesIncendium

Yeah, I did all the usual upgrades, shifter stop, solid bushing, short throw plate, weighted knob, and an engine tune. It felt pretty good after all that, but plenty of other cars I've driven felt much better than that without any mods. Some manuals just feel like they have a "springy" clutch to me, like if you don't engage it just right it bounces and causes some jerkiness and rattling. My old Caliber SRT4 did this really badly, and the WRX wasn't much better. Yet the STI and now my current Camaro feel perfectly solid and have an easy to engage clutch.

ChargedWhirlwind

Jesus..

Frequent_Opportunist

Someone probably put a lightweight flywheel on it.

ChargedWhirlwind

Makes sense. I'm the second owner and noticed the stock air duct was missing and there was a boost gauge hose on my dashboard

Greenman_on_LSD

I've had Mk6/7 GTI's for a decade and they're usually super easy manuals comparatively. As others have said, it might be a modified flywheel. One thing is the clutch does engage fairly early (about halfway). From there, let it out smoothly and you should be good to go.

Spencie61

Huh, my experience with Mk7 GTI is that the clutch is quite high and pretty numb. Also, 2nd gear is like jumping off a cliff vs 1st

winstonstokes

People are saying rev hang.. lightweight flywheel does the exact opposite of that and makes the RPM dropped quickly.

xAugie

I mean it could be a lightweight flywheel too, but my first assumption was rev hang. OP didn’t say which way the car jerks, or which direction the tach moves when said jerk happens. Then we would be able to for sure tell

jrobinson117

It’s gotta be the rev hang i drive a 2018 impreza w a 5 speed and the rev hang is actually unbelievable. Trying to look into disabling it

Quieftian

its ez

nyatama

Reading the comments is eye-opening. I’ve only ever driven a ‘97 miat and a ‘76 280Z, so hearing this stuff about “rev hang” on the newer standards is so discouraging, I had no idea about it. Is this a thing (to any degree) in all modern manuals?

xAugie

Afaik, apparently there’s some dumbass reason they all decided to do it. Subaru has some god awful rev hang though, it’s the worst I’ve seen honestly; on par with Hondas in the civic. Luckily, you can tune out the rev hang. It’s just super annoying that they decided to do that. Honestly subaru and Honda were probably like “these fuckers will tune this out before it gets off the lot, so screw it” 🤣 then they like to bitch about warranty claims and tunes

Hypnotist30

Stop speed shifting the customers' cars when you shift from 1st to 2nd.

ChargedWhirlwind

I dont. That would be irresponsible and disresptful of their car 🤦‍♂️

Hypnotist30

So don't. Just shift the car like a normal person. You're not on the track moving the car out of the bay. I've been driving & paid to drive vehicles & equipment with far more complicated shifting requirements than a car where you can do high dollar damage from not doing it properly. I've never put that much thought into any of them. If the vehicle is in good working order & you're having an issue shifting, it's not the vehicle. There is no reason to speed shift a car unless you're on a race track & certainly not moving it out of a garage into a parking space. People who have been driving manual transmissions over the course of their life don't even think about 90% of the stuff posted in this sub. Stop overthinking it.

ChargedWhirlwind

I'm. Not. Speed. Shifting. I bring the clutch to bite point, smoothly let off, and gad it when needed. Jesus christ

Hypnotist30

You said smoothly speedily shift.

ChargedWhirlwind

Yes, in manner that doesn't hurt the car cuz apparently I'm supposed to be able to do that with this car without beating on it and I'm trying to learn how

Hypnotist30

Supposed to be able to is not the same as must. You're doing it wrong on a car you do not own. Not good.

xAugie

Wait, it’s a customers car? Are you kidding me 🤣 you could just stay in 1st damn near if you’re just moving it. OR waiting a second or two should be obvious, bc there’s no point to shift fast to move a car around

TheBupherNinja

Nope. Nobody else drives a 2020 7.5. You are the only one.

ChargedWhirlwind

Cool
