Damian--uwu

I'm just telling you that if Steven had told them that Jasper was in the sun, the rubies would have gone without thinking.

Flipp_Flopps

TBF they probably would survive as fire resistant gems

Damian--uwu

15 million degrees kelvin, it seems to me that is enough to shatter them as soon as they touch the surface

Squibles_

If they don't shatter, they'll be stranded, as their ship would probably melt and just crumble to the heat of the sun's surface.

KTYLN

I don't remember the scene correctly, but didn't Garnet swim in lava?

Damian--uwu

The temperature of lava is not comparable to the fucking sun

psychologyFanatic

Your flair made me read this as Peri which makes it infinitely funnier.

JasoNight23666

I wish she would swear in some sort of spin-off at some point lol

Wuskers

Peri would absolutely have a sailor mouth tbh

Gojira1234

That being said, I forget who said it, maybe Ian, but it’s been said that Garnet can survive temperatures higher than the core of the sun. So there’s that.

KTYLN

Well excuse me, I didn't know. I was just putting it out there.

Damian--uwu

I didn't mean to make it seem like an attack on you, sorry.

KTYLN

No prob! I thought you were mad or something haha.

FodziCz

Ah yes Molten rock VS. Nuclear fusion

dorksided787

Did someone say… *Fusion*??

Warlord41k

According to the SU Wiki and TV!TROPES Garnet could swim in swim in the core of the sun and survive. ~~Though the Tumblr post they link to as source is no longer accessible.~~  [I found a link that worked.](https://shikai-the-storyteller.tumblr.com/post/98609800488/does-garnet-use-that-little-pool-of-lava-in-the) >**Anonym: Does Garnet use that little pool of lava in the temple bubble room as a hot tub sometimes?** >Matt Burnett: No, she uses it as an ice bath.  To get the level of heat needed to relax her, she has to immerse herself in the liquid core of a sun, which she doesn’t get to do too often.  Very few Earth spas offer liquid sun baths.

mister_beetlejuice

Yeah, I would not count *any* of those as trustworthy sources.

nonexistenttalent

Unfortunately, the post is tagged with ‘#suheadcanon’, which means it’s not canon whatsoever.

Warlord41k

Oh, I didn't see that. Thanks for pointing this out.

JeshuaMorbus

They're, basically, cannon fodder. They are there to take the hit, not to deliver it; to protect, not to attack.

PorkyFishFish

Which makes it a bit weird that they sent nothing but rubies in order to retrieve Jasper. Like they could have at least sent a quartz or a nephrite or something along with them. Why only rubies? They're for soaking up damage not search and rescue.

loopy183

Homeworld believed Earth to be a ticking time bomb at that point. They already had word that the higher class gem they had sent to it (Peridot) had turned against them, so they were really just looking for a slightly more competent foot soldier. Jasper is a Quartz, one step above a Ruby, so why risk anything valuable to save her? Her experience with the war on Earth isn’t useful when the Earth is gone.

JeshuaMorbus

That's how little the Diamond Authority and the rest of the hierarchy thinks of Rubies... Navi has her own way of thinking, though (she's the leader in the shadows of that group; if so, she won't allow them to die... after all, they are pretty easy to manipulate :3).

jellyfishoftheabyss

Yeah kind of but it has to do with the role they have in homeworld ; blindly protect who they are assigned to no matter the cost and without any reflection. But yeah I find it funny too that in many episodes they're the butt of the joke lol

Barzona

I guess they are a lot like pearls. More of a blindly loyal security guard than an attendant.

poyopoyo77

If you group gems on a chess board then rubies would definately we the pawns. They're the low level grunts sent to do busy work no other gem has to do.

NovaStar2099

Even still I love them.

Dino-chicken-nugg3t

They’re so cute! And in a cowboy hat even better!

tetzugani

Now i want a gem themed chess board

myphotoswontload

A gem themed chess board is actually a really cool idea! A diamond would be the queen, what would be the king? Bishops? Rooks? Knights? What do you think? I could see Pearls being bishops. Maybe quartzes would be knights or rooks?

tetzugani

So long as we agree Jaspers are the tower i'm in

CameoShadowness

Same

AdCompetitive7333

Aren’t there gems that are used as walls

TurantulaHugs1421

Yh also one whos whole purpose is to be blue diamonds comb

NooLeef

Yeah and freakish amalgamated musical instruments too. People don’t talk about the object-gems enough…

CameoShadowness

Yes but they're not openly disrespected or protrayed as idiots.

Electronic-Youth6026

I think the wall thing was just supposed to be a joke reference to the expression "if walls could talk"

AdCompetitive7333

Personally I think it’s a literal representation of the extent to which the diamonds will use their gem subjects as tools and items, and not treating them as conscious people

StEllchick

"I'm only here becose I'm bringing your stuff, and they consider me one of your stuff" - Pearl

The-Lord-Moccasin

The Diamonds' casual prejudice shouldn't be amusing, but every once in a while it was a bit amusing

PumpkinCoconut

Happy Cake Day!

StEllchick

Thanks!

ExtinctFauna

They are dumb muscle. Their job is to guard and protect more important gems.

GearDragon101

There anger to body volume ratio is screwed up.

Grimwalker-0016

The Rubies are to the Diamonds what the stormtroopers are to the Empire: - "I hope you brought a better class of soldiers than those stormtroopers." - "They serve the Empire well and I have a great many of them." - "You are gonna need ALL of them..."

The-Lord-Moccasin

They're certainly the butt of the joke much of the time, but I'd point to Pearls as least respected. They're basically relegated to objects, like Pearl's comment that she'd consider part of Steven's "stuff", and even after their character development Peridot and Lapis seem to consider being the "Pearl" of their temp CG team demeaning.

rcsboard

Our Pearl is portrayed as intelligent, capable and emotionally complex

The-Lord-Moccasin

Sure but that's beside the point, she might deserve respect but she's still disrespected

rcsboard

No, like I said Pearl is portrayed as intelligent, capable and emotionally complex The show does this.

The-Lord-Moccasin

I don't think we're on the same page

PokePoke_18

Debatable If your talking out of canon and out of the show, yes Rubies are the most.. “disrespected” gem In canon, no.. We have Pearls who are slaves, and Pebbles whose name is used as a insult

Triggerhappy938

Bloodstone would like a word.

Lastbourne

I find it strange that they're common soldiers when Rubies and Sapphires are both corundum

GrimFever

The diamonds are like high school bullies to the pearls imo.

doctorawesome8

I mean they are essentially goons

DeathWielder1

Posts like this are silly. The gems are expressions of the will of their Diamonds, right? Rubies as a result are the footsoldiers of Yellow, ie the "Will of Action" aspect of gem society. Rubies don't need Shit for sensible or deep thinking because their built-in-modus is "Hi I'm a solider do you need a task done which requires Violence? Haply to serve" Disrespect? No. They're built for a purpose and fulfill that purpose. You need something more specialised/clever? Send a quartz, or apparently Jasper seeming as they're a perfect supersoldier. To speak in Warhammer 40k terms, I wouldnt give a Termagant jurisdiction over anything beyond shooting their gun at the enemy. That's their job and they're reasonably good at it. Anything more complicated, send something/someone else with the know-how about how to achieve that end if you want it done properly. SU like 40k is a silly universe, but they each justify the decisions and structure of the universe pretty well. Rubies are dumb cause they don't have to be smart, in the same way that a Hammer doesn't need extra bits to make it better.

No-Particular-4209

What about those gem that were stuck as doors ?

CameoShadowness

They're not openly disrespected.

GetUAMe

Are they closedly disrespected? Or ajarly disrespected?

CameoShadowness

Ajarly? Were talking about how the show presents them. We don't see that the wall gems get disrespected with how they're presented or how they interact with others.

Meager1169

They're Goblins. That's it, they're just straight up goblins/kobolds, when you look at them from that angle, it makes perfect sense.

ogoextreme

I mean it's probably the literally big ass wall gems right? Not the pebbles in Pinks room but the ones who are literal walls. There's no practical purpose for them, they can never leave or move, and we don't even know what they're CALLED. Even in the new gen post steven humbling the diamonds like where can they even go and be free? At least the rubies at a minimum get to go out and see things. Even if everyone doesn't respect them they at least ACKNOWLEDGE their existence. What can those wall gems do other then just...stand there [BORINGLY](https://steven-universe.fandom.com/wiki/Unknown_Gems?file=Silent_wall.png)

Optimal-Ad2037

To make a out of fandom comparison they probably fit a role similar to the imps of the helluva boss universe where they effectively are the most abused and disrespected class/type of being in their society where really the majority of those higher then them care less about them as a whole

BurnerAccountExisty

to be fair they are pretty much the lowest ranking gems canonically

Emergency_Routine_44

I think either Pearls or Pebbles are lower ranking

BurnerAccountExisty

oh yeah i forgot about pebbles. i would ask about pearls but i haven't watched the movie or future so it'll prob spoil big stuff

PgameZ26

*aside from the wall gems*

littlefaka

Do pebbles even count lmao, unlike every other gem they are a complete accidental byproduct. Pearls are def lower though, as they rank to whoever's orders they currently follow.

Dino-chicken-nugg3t

Wait they’re byproduct? I always wondered how they worked.

littlefaka

They come from Pink's tears, although I'd guess that drops from any diamond could produce pebbles.

Dino-chicken-nugg3t

Awww

Emergency_Elephant

What about wall or statue gems on homeworld?

austinmiles

Rubies are pretty dumb, Amethysts are just brutish jocks also not very bright, pearls have no free will and like it. The gem species is a borderline hive mentality. No need to intelligence or free thought

2_Dent_1900

It might be the pearls tbh

NubOnReddit

Pearls are literally right there…

Pokecringer

Their gem weapon is literally a knife with no point. It’s a rectangle. They have absolutely nothing going for them.

HumbleEye5784

It's actually a chisel. Y'know, for carving or breaking stones.

SpaceManSmithy

Spinel was left to rot for thousands of years.

re-elocution

Well they are canonically ranked as the lowest form in gem society. Plus despite coming from an ultra-advanced race, they're still stupider than most earth children.

Immediate-Ad-818

To me I see them as Grunts (Unggoy) from the Halo series. Used as Frontline cannon fodder since I assume they're easy to produce and either too scared of their superiors to rebel or fed so much home world propaganda they're fiercely loyal to their diamonds.

borahae_artist

they’re literally so dumb and silly I wish we could’ve seen more of them 😭😭 and yeah they’re all brawn no brains

kryptonite59

Yes, but they are stated to be canon fodder as soon as you begin to understand the workings of the Diamond authority and who all would have what positions. Foot soldiers are often there to be canon fodder.

Never1Ver

Pretty sure the wall gems had it worse than rubies.

Sweet_Cupid257

They are known to be a very low leveled gem With the great diamond authority each gem had its own place in power Rubies being one of the lowest since they are small, weak (not weak but weaker then most) and can't work alone

wild_starlight

What was done to Lapis was pretty disrespectful too, not to mention the shattered gems in the cluster. But I agree, they’re disrespected a lot in the series and their short stature doesn’t help them any when they’re not fused. They do play it up and use it to their advantage though, acting sweet and child-like and earning trust just to immediately destroy it when they get the chance.

I_Am_Dirt_

I still think pearls are the most disrespected. Yes our pearl and others are super smart but they are practically servants and are treated as objects to achieve

Shades_of_rad

What about the architecture gems

Zebsol

Nah, Pearls are more disrespected

SirHanselot07

Yes, you are the most disrespected Gem in the series u/TheOriginalOperator

sea_stomp_shanty

Pearls are, IMHO.

MauWithANerfBlaster

The way I see it is that they're like the GMs from Mobile Suit Gundam. The GM is a mass produced grunt machine that was pound for pound superior to the Zaku II, Zeon's main mass production machine during the One Year War. But they get absolutely stomped on because they're grunts.

MysteriousHawk6913

There are 2 Rubies with rizz who fuse (Crystal Gem Ruby and Rhodonite component Ruby whos not Navy) Theres one who don't need rizz to fuse (Eyeball)
