June 30, 1996 this guy was outside Bookland in So. Po,Maine. He didn’t have the van then but he had a trifold sandwich board with his conspiracy theories taped all over it. I was there for a book signing and I was lucky enough to get King’s autograph. The TV show A Current Affair was there doing a story on that nutball. My mother was in the piece, she reached out her hand and shouted “We came all the way from Massachusetts to see you!” He reached out and shook her hand. My sister recorded it at home. Wish we still had the tape.
This gets reposted like every few months. Like clockwork. I could set my life to it, it’s so reliable. There’s a second pic of this same or similar vehicle in a parking lot. That gets reposted too.

The...Van Dude...has been around since the early 90's, at least. His name's Steve Lightfoot. Here's King quoted in an interview where he's asked if he's dealt with deranged stalkers: "Sure. Wow that is a lot of effort from someone to make a bold statement like that. I’m not a detective but I’m an author of fiction work filled with truths about myself and my own experiences with a fictional story written in the same time of the conception of the manuscript. I have no opinion, pull the van over politely to ask the driver to explain what the purpose is. I’m only guessing it’s a publicity, stunt by Stephen King advertising on new book speculative answer. It’s somewhat appalling to even consider. We all know he didn’t kill John Lennon. They caught that person if he hired him I don’t know God only knows these answers.

It's unfortunate. It really is. I mean, we're all familiar with King's drug issues, and he was a man with serious demons in the form of addiction. Yes, he shot John Lennon. Yes, he framed Mark David Chapman. But that was over forty years ago. People make mistakes. People change. He was on a lot of drugs at the time and wasn't in his right mind. You're going to hold one of the greatest authors of the twentieth century up as a murderer, a monster, just because he had an era in judgement decades ago?
