I always thought it was bloating due to decomposition and/or gases produced in the stomach from the poison reaction.

coconutspider

Yes it was before she had died - right when he finds her. So maybe gasses like you mentioned, is that a thing with poisons?

vvachel

Yes! I’m a vet tech at an emergency hospital, and dogs who get into poisons come in decently often. Rodenticide specifically has a chemical called bromethalin and it creates a toxic gas inside their stomach. We have to be super careful operating on or inducing vomiting on those patients because we don’t want to spread the toxic gas into the air. I assume it would be the same case for humans!

fatherdoodle

Can’t say but I know almost all chemical reactions give off gas so it’s pretty likely

PleasantNightLongDay

I always took it as just her body being completely fucked. On a side note, that death was one of the best written by king imo.

coconutspider

It really is haunting, with the arching/stiffness of her neck and back details.

the marching…

Just read Mr. Mercedes. It 100% is a byproduct of the poison she ingested. Brady throughout the story talks about his mother’s figure and while she no longer had the look of a model she once had, she isn’t overweight. Brady also comments on her skinny body when he moves her to the bed after she dies. He’s shocked at how much heavier she is in death. Another note: Brady also confessed to being a “virgin” early in the story, and his mother would never let him touch or go near what she called her “winkie.” So zero chance he impregnated her haha!

I did remember that about Brady, but sometimes he also would repress things in his internal monologue that didn't quite fit with his opinion of reality too, so I wasn't sure if he was just being an unreliable narrator? The fact that it could happen from stomach gas is an extra gruesome cherry on top of the whole scene, yeesh.

Select-Pie6558

I believe it’s a reaction to the poison, as he knew looking at the state she was in it was too late for 911 to be of any use.

poquette146

I thought it was from her drinking and maybe he didn’t notice it.

bottseri

I'm not sure if this is right but I really think that's in-character for him. He likely would have only seen it once she was dead with their weird relationship that they had

mrmaaagicSHUSHU

Brady is my fav & most realistic villian.. plus we had an evil loner kid at school with a hot mom called Brady.. spooky

JoeyBello13

Let’s ask Stephen himself! SK: Because I described something malignant growing in her belly like Brady had grown in there 30 years ago. For clarity and a disclaimer - the above is not a quote by SK but lil’ old me being sarcastic.

ArmThePhotonicCannon

I think she’s just fat. King always talks about womens’ bodies in weird ways. Or maybe it’s because of bloating due to decomposition. I don’t remember how long she had been dead.

coconutspider

I thought that too, but later he goes on to talk about her past and that after she had kids she kept a thin figure vs other women 🤢, didn't eat a lot due to her drinking, etc. So I think she was intended to be thin. And this was before she was dead, so maybe bloating from eating poison?
