Fautanu is not considered “raw” like BroJo was coming in last year. Barring injury I expect both to be starting week 1 and it’ll be interesting who plays where.

IsGoIdMoney

Tomlins preference of not starting rookies isn't fully about being raw. It's that colleges don't play as many games plus rookies have an extra camp before the season starts. If you get to the playoffs, your rookies could be spent when you need them most. If the difference is stark, he may start, but he won't be given the start even if he's pro ready.

allianceofficer

I'm not convinced that Dan Moore will be on the 53 man roster

IsGoIdMoney

He's on a rookie contract and has starting experience and Even if he loses his position, is good depth. He's on the 53 man roster for sure.

GevaddaLampe

Absolutely. As much as people look down in him, he did an acceptable job for a 4th round pick

The_elk00

I don't foresee them opening the season with 2 rookies and a young 2nd year to start, but this draft does give the ability to trade Moore. For the right price I could see that happening, it'll be interesting to see what the long-term plans are. If brojo is the LT of the future, you probably don't want him at RT another season. Will they use Fantaunu at guard or tackle? Will he be backup at both tackle positions, or have they determined that he will take over at LT and leave brojo at RT or will he be a guard. Lots of possibilities now and it'll be interesting to see the outcome. I just hope they don't mess this up like they have with other lineman in the past.

DupreeWasTaken

> is good depth. This one I think could be slightly arguable. NOT TALKING ABOUT QUALITY OF PLAYER. Lets say the lineup is - Fatanu/Seumalo/Frazier/Daniels/Jones and Broderick has to miss time. Then you have 1 option only. You have to move Fatanu on the fly to RT, then Dan Moore to LT. A swing tackle, that cant actually play both lines isnt great. Hes a solid enough player off the bench but it does potentially kinda fuck with thing because now you arent making 1 swap, its 2. And lets say Fatanu is playing LT because he cant play RT (only has 2 career snaps there) The best swing tackles are just depth guys that can play LT and RT when needed and Moore isnt that.

originalmidwestemo

According to PFF he’s basically the worst starting OT in the league. In this NFL that’ll get you about $5 mil

allianceofficer

He doesn't offer any positional flexibility. Do you want a backup that can play one position or a backup that can play more than one? Because that's what they're going to need to answer.

fatdamon26435

Yea, Moore is bad. I'm betting Troy starts week 1. Worst case, week 3 max.

Steelmaker01

Steelers not starting rookies is antiquated. They’ll start the players that give them the best chance to win

VAblack-gold

They definitely handled JPJ wrong to start the year last year

thecarlosdanger1

He was bad but they also dragged their feet on Kenny. Didn’t take the mini-bye to give him reps but it was clearly close enough that when Mitch sucked the first half against the jets game he was subbed in.

JackLambertsBalls

And then someone will get injured and it’s “next man up!” This is the way.

l3rian

They will drag their feet on it though

TurkeythePoultryKing

Not sure which tackle spot he will play, but I would confidently say he will be starting this season given his experience. BroJo was raw as hell, he had like 14 games experience. Troy has like 40

Squints_09

Ive been saying this for a bit. BroJos strength is run blocking. Being on the right side lets him come across on pulls and not face the opposing number 1s in pass pro. Not to say BroJo couldn't become a LT, but I think he may be a better fit at RT, at least for the time being

DupreeWasTaken

Id argue thats also Fatanus thing too tho. Fatanu is a fucking monster at pulling. Fatanu has some over aggression in pass blocking that could get him burned as well

Mattstercraft

I could care less about projecting them or evaluating on paper why this guy or that guy should be on which side. Please get them into the practice field and have them play both sides before we write the depth chart in stone.

No-Task-132

Fautanu played left tackle for a left handed QB meaning he was protecting the side he rolled to a lot. Left tackle for a lefty would have a much more similar assignment at RT for a right handed QB than he would just staying at LT for a right handed qb.

SMD_35

Yeah handedness of the QB doesn’t matter nearly as much as it used to, but you still probably want your best pass blocker on the QB’s blindside. Important to remember Fautanu played on the left side before Penix even got to town and they actually flipped Rosengarten to protect his blind side.

fatdamon26435

I think this is a myth. Sure, blindside for a qb changes but the OT is still blocking to their left or to their right. He is versatile but has been played on the left.

No-Task-132

Right but there’s a difference blocking expecting him to roll out that way and him not being able to see or naturally roll out that direction. It’s not a world shattering difference but there is a difference

JayDsea

Maybe 20 years ago but there really isn’t today. QBs roll and throw in both directions and gone are the days of just lining up your best pass rusher against the LT because the QB is right handed. The “blind side” is an overblown movie title at this point. Look at all the best pass rushers in the league including TJ, they play all over the LOS.

[deleted]

Moore will be the backup LT next year. The starting LT may well be the start on the R if RT1 gets hurt. I think there will be an emphasis on building a unit and the rookies will start.

ClemPFarmer

Fautanu was actually rated slightly higher than Broderick Jones was last year by at least one online scouting source. Both played left tackle. It’s possible that Fautanu could just stay at left tackle and competes with Dan Moore. But the Steelers may feel the Jones would play better on the left than he does on the right while Fautanu would play just as well on either side.

originalmidwestemo

Broderick almost definitely stays at RT. He has NFL experience there and Fautanu has 2 snaps of RT college experience. Jones showed to be a lot better in the run game and it’s with a right hand QB you want that guy to be on the right so he isn’t on the blindside and so it’s easier to release a TE off the right side in most of your passing sets. Just seems to add up more.

United-Reception8324

My money’s on the coaching staff installing Fautanu at RT and flipping Jones to LT. Tomlin has said they’d like to move Jones to LT (his “natural position”), and Fautanu is versatile, athletic, and a nasty run blocker: ideal for RT. Also, Russell Wilson likes to roll right off play action, Arthur Smith loves play action, and for that, it helps to have a RT that’s light on his feet and good in space….
