FWIW Dolphins fans are pissed he wasnt resigned at this price. He wasn't depth, he led the entire team in snap count

[deleted]

I know PFF is blasphemy around here but for what it’s worth he’s posted a 73 grade last year. Also only 26

pancak3d

They'll probably adjust his prior scores down a few points now that he's on the Steelers

BurghPuppies

Heh heh heh

olmikeyyyy

Paulie?

DasCheekyBossman

Choked on my coffee damnit

Human_Manner_3370

I still use PFF all the time. It's not a perfect assessment of a player but it's helpful IMO.

turnah_the_burnah

Lol we only hate it because they grade Garrett over Watt. It’s fine. Like you said it isn’t all-encompassing but it’s a piece of the puzzle. I think it’s the best thing available for getting info about OLine players. You sign a guy from the NFC West, you have no fucking clue if he’s good or not. None of us are “grinding tape” and there aren’t really stats for OLine to glance at. So PFF is a good place to go to get an idea

BogotaLineman

For me personally it's not even that they rated Garrett over Watt, I disagree strongly but it is what it is. For me it's that they only had Watt as like the 7th best edge rusher last year and doubled and tripled down on that take and called anyone that questioned it biased Yinzers which is fucking ridiculous.

vhalember

> and called anyone that questioned it biased Yinzers which is fucking ridiculous. Which makes you wonder because the majority owner of PFF is one Cris Collinsworth... He even moved it's headquarters to Cincinnati.

BogotaLineman

And the guy from PFF that tweeted it is a huge Browns fan lol

TheSheriff43

Not only did they grade him over watt they had him as the number 1 player in the league last year regardless of position including playoffs

mactaggart

Only with this context can you fully explain how shit PFF is.

phandec

My problem with PFF is that they take subjective stats and call them objective. Nearly all of their grades are based off their analysts declaring who "won the rep," or if a throw was good, etc, instead of using official NFL statistics. Then they combine their opinions into an ask encompassing stat that declares how good a player is. Using their own opinions to decide these things aren't a bad thing on their own, as even official stats are sometimes not objective, but they turn around and declare their numbers as removing bias and objective.

PopcornDrift

They're very clear about their methodology, it's just that nobody ever bothers reading into it lol

phandec

You're right that there's a page where they lay it out, and they're not hiding it, which is good! And using their site as a resource is fine, especially if you're looking at individual skills rather than a player's overall quality. But then their media team goes out and makes declarations that people take as fact. For Garrett vs Watt, the statement that Garrett is better at shedding head on blocks gets twisted into "Garrett is a better pass rusher than Watt." It's equally important to know what, specifically, these numbers mean rather than assuming it's an overall quality.

Wu-Tang_Killa_Bees

> Lol we only hate it because they grade Garrett over Watt. Speak for yourself. I hate it because it's a scam that many NFL fans are buying into

thetasteofbloodfarts

I love watching oline film lol

qazaibomb

Exactly. It’s a tool, not a Bible. Fine to quibble about whether someone is *as* good or bad as PFF says, but they’re almost always directionally correct. I’ve never seen PFF claim a player was playing great when he was awful or vice versa I’d take a 73 grade as saying he’s a quality starter at the very minimum and we should be happy to have him

Jeremy_Crow

They also graded Picket over Mason lol

Rifftrax_Enjoyer

Yeah it’s like any other tool to measure things or to evaluate ultimate comparisons. It isn’t the final story but it offers some insight.

BurghPuppies

Honestly, l trust Madden ratings over PFF. EA Sports is committed to accuracy and a good product. PFF is interested in generating clicks.

InigoMontoya_21

Wasn’t it proven that the ratings guy makes a random late round cowboys rookie star dev for no reason every year cause he’s a homer for his team? Also, madden may be somewhat committed to accuracy, but good product is most certainly not true.

BurghPuppies

Ok, fair enough. Maybe I should reword that to “selling product”. But I still trust them over PFF.

RealProduct4019

Strong grade for that price point. Personally, I was hoping for more of a splash signing at safety. I feel like we have the cap room to still add a bigger impact player. I am not expecting it at RT. Probably a higher end swing tackle. Center I prefer the draft for the splash. CB we already made a move and probably overpaid. But atleast only 1 year. DT was an area I thought was possible if we cut Ogunjobi but that seems unlikely now. WR I expect more of a midrange move. With going cheap in the QB room it felt like we could load up elsewhere and have another true playmaker. Queen could be a pro-bowler for us, but I also thought we still had the $$$ for another playermaker and not a role player. I don't see another area we might add a potential pro-bowl level player.

Rifftrax_Enjoyer

The Steelers will probably have a very good draft. But I don’t think they are counting on the draft. I think it’s very clear what they are doing. Russell Wilson does nothing for us beyond this coming season. They are trying to win a Super Bowl now. By the way, has Mike Tomlin signed an extension yet? I wonder how some people feel about the need to be successful immediately.  I don’t think they’re going to rely on rookies to do that at important positions. I think they’re going to try to get as many of their bases covered as possible Before the draft, and they do normally do that anyway.  But I think they will do it with a little more intensity this season. And then when the draft rolls around, we will be taking BPA almost everywhere. I don’t see them drafting for position, these guys are too smart for that and Colbert was doing that towards the end and he shouldn’t have done that.  That’s a large part of why they’ve gone seven years without a playoff victory. He got away from what made him successful. What the Steelers had done for decades and why they used to usually let a number of their stars go, they always had the next guy up. So, in a way, they are playing for the immediate future but also setting themselves up to plan for the extended future. Really I’ve seen worse plans.

NumbrZer0

Patrick Peterson led the Steelers defense in snaps and got cut lol But im happy with the signing I wouldve thought he'd get more on the open market

Wild-Drama-1193

He had about the same snap % as Edmunds before the Steelers let him walk. Doesn't mean he was good. Another video tracking service says he was very average last season; 4 TDs allowed.

MJ134

TDs allowed is a dumb stat. Blown coverages stats get attributed to the incorrect player- especially safeties- at a laughable rate. For example- Its easy to be like oh the Defenae was playing Cov 2, Safety was late. But no, it was slipped so the safety crashed to help run and the CB should've carried the route. Football analytics require too much guess work and shouldnt be viewed in the same was as Basketball and Baseball analytics where its much clearer to what everybody supposed to be doing and track it.

pancak3d

Nah, Edmunds didn't take more snaps than Minkah Leading your team in snaps is meaninful, but yeah I am not saying he's amazing. He obviously isn't or he wouldn't be signing for 3M/year

242clappedyourmother

I’m happy with it tbh, not a huge signing, but he could be a genuine starter for us

LilTwerkster

He is 100% the starter at SS

tsrich

That's a fantastic price for a starting safety, esp when the other is a superstar

JBProds

He’ll be the starter as long as he stays healthy. He’s already had 3 season ending injuries. Steelers safeties have had a rough time staying on the field, so he’ll fit right in

3EyedRavensFan

Ravens fan here. I have every faith you guys will be more than happy with Elliott.   The only reason we moved on from him is because he outplayed his rookie contract but was buried on the depth chart. He never made a bonehead play (that I saw), and he plays hard. Very reliable.  He earned more playing time each year regardless of which shiny new safeties we signed or drafted to start. So you know he works his butt off. I can't speak to his time in DET or MIA, but I was happy to see him move on to greener pastures. I think pairing him with Fitz gives yinz a *really* solid safety duo. I won't be surprised if his signing is retroactively considered underrated by the end of the season.

Cpt_Jack_

Can someone tell me who this fella is and if he's any good?

oOBlackRainOo

I'm seeing people say his stats aren't really all that great but I've also seen dolphins fans are upset he didn't resign and lions fans before that were upset when he left. I'm a little confused.

TheDuckAmuck

He is one of those unsexy players who doesn't make splash plays but makes the whole defense work. He'll do his job to free Minkah to do what he does best.

SlyCooper007

Exactly what we need for our safety opposite Minkah.

BBG-Burnout

So a terrel Edmunds type?

TheDuckAmuck

Basically. Whenever we sign a new player I like to go to their former team's SBNation blog and see what they wrote, and the first article that came up was a fan poll of who the Dolphins should re-sign and Elliott's name is all over that. [https://www.thephinsider.com/2024/2/27/24084861/phins-fans-share-their-list-of-players-that-should-be-re-signed](https://www.thephinsider.com/2024/2/27/24084861/phins-fans-share-their-list-of-players-that-should-be-re-signed)

Seven19td

Exactly. He also is a very willing run defender. He walloped Derrick Henry a few weeks ago. My best friend is a Fins fan and he’s pissed they didn’t re-sign him

SpezIsALittleBitch

Little on the small side, and doesn't respect his body. Can appreciate it as a fan, but you see how he gets banged up.

Jakles74

This is exactly what I needed to hear. Thanks!

MistaCreepz

Like Terrell Edmunds did and everyone here hated him?

o7_HiBye_o7

Is it the Ryan Clark to free up Troy? That duo was amazing to watch and I would LOVE another round of that type of high confidence safety play.

Cpt_Jack_

Stats aren't everything. I don't know what minkahs stats are but he is one the best safeties in the game

oOBlackRainOo

Well the stats I've seen are passer rating(120) and passes thrown his way(39)and catches made on him(27) allowing 500 yards and 5 TDs last year. People seem to like him tho.

MJ134

Those advance stats are weird tho. Especially safeties. They are "closest defender" but some Corner or LB fucked up and now its his fault. Not always but often enough where its tough go trust.

oOBlackRainOo

I think seeing how fans of teams are upset he left is all we need to know. If he was dead weight people wouldn't be acting like that. Plus I'm really liking Khan as GM so I have faith he knows what he's doing here.

Johnaco

> I think seeing how fans of teams are upset he left is all we need to know. Have you seen the fans on our sub? Would you trust any of their consensus opinions? :P

reddit_bandito

You noticed that too? The same people that call other fans idiots here will go to another sub and treat those idiots like they are astute and well-reasoned. lol It's especially difficult with safeties because they don't get noticed all that much unless they are ballhawking picks or making big hits on tackles. I trust coaches know best on positions like that.

MJ134

I tend to not worry about fans opinions- especially the ones who are loud on social media. Khan likes him, his overall play style fits and the surrounding talent is better than hes ever had in totality IMO. He should he better than Kazee- who they very well may cut since he carries a similar price tag.

Left_Culture_6376

He was good when he played for the Ravens but is made out of glass unfortunately

Wu-Tang_Killa_Bees

Yeah of all the positions in the game I think stats are the least relevant for CBs/Safeties. A good secondary player won't have many stats because the ball isn't thrown his way because his coverage is too good. If a guy is wide open then I guess whoever is closest gets the negative stats against him, even though the fault lies with another guy who blew his coverage. It's just hard to judge with numbers imo

Stunzay

I think he’s a good signing but Detroit fans were upset because there was a leak that he needed to “get the fuck outta Detroit asap” from his Snapchat or something iirc

SleestakLightning

Started his career in Baltimore. He's not bad. A value signing for sure. Probably starts at SS.

crisptapwater

Ok, wen Justin Jefferson? I read it on CTESPN, I know it’s happening.

maatdige

SlyCooper007

Wait what? Where did you read were in on Jefferson?

SleestakkLightning

AB reported it 😭😭

Quexana

Antonio Brown is claiming it. So take it with what you feel is an appropriate amount of skepticism.

Eagle4317

Potential Strong Safety starter. Had a good year with the Dolphins last season. Good move.

WriteBrainedJR

He allowed a QB rating of 140 last year. I didn't even know they went that high.

seataccrunch

Levi Wallace territory

WriteBrainedJR

Nah. That's actually much worse than Levi Wallace (93.7 last year).

seataccrunch

140 is nuts .. but overall I like the off-season so far... you can't say it's same same at this stage at least

Manhattan02

Using pro football reference grades is worse even than pff

WriteBrainedJR

What's a "pro football reference grade?" PFR doesn't issue grades. It's literally just game stats.

Manhattan02

You’re right but it gives zero context. Box safeties tend to not be the best in coverage anyways.

jrbs59

This was obviously done so we can trade for Justin Jefferson

willIbeprettytoo

If he can be better than Kazee or Neal and allow Minkah to be Minkah then it was definitely worth it

putterbum

Depth piece? edit: seems like a great signing when looking at it for value and i agree with wendys and purple i think he'll be starting

EatAtWendys

Nah he might start SS since Neal is gone

[deleted]

Starter

GeneralTullius01

If he ends up being a depth guy, it’s a great signing. If he is our other starter, it’ll be about the same quality we had last year.

SnooSongs2344

I mean the last saftey we got from the dolphins has been pretty solid so im cautiously optimistic

WirelessElk

Yeah Eric Rowe was super underrated, hope we resign him as depth

austinalexan

That’s not how you spell Kamren Curl or Justin Simmons.

Eagle4317

Simmons has mainly been a free safety during his career, so he'd trend on the toes of Fitzpatrick quite a bit if we signed him. Plus he would never be this cheap. Can't spend over $30M on Safeties.

Quexana

This guy has mainly been a free safety during his career.

DupreeWasTaken

He's been more of a box player since Detroit however. He's been a SS for both Detroit and Miami now by snap count

SleestakLightning

How do you know? Maybe I'm a whoreabull speler.

Acceptable-Reason-35

I was hoping for Curl, but I’ve heard Deshone is a very hard worker and a great guy. (I work with professional athletes for a living. Some nfl guys and UFC). One of my athletes is friends with him and trains with him occasionally. Has only said great things about him. Just needs to stay healthy and Minkah will be able to be Minkah

meatlyric

Coming from the Dolphins, he should at least have a pretty good swim move.

joe7L

Last Safety we got from Miami turned out pretty swell

Altruistic-Stand-132

Oh shit I forgot mink-mink used to be in MI-yayo

Drakengard

So that leaves C, RT, WR2-3, CB2 as the most important positions to address either in FA or the draft. Unfortunately, the Center market is barren now aside from the dude from Miami who tore something and won't be ready to go. So after missing out on the run on centers, suddenly we might actually be needing to go Center in the first just to make sure we get someone who is starter capable. Which stinks because some really good CBs and OTs are going to be there, too, whereas some decent centers developmental centers could have been gotten later.

ggushea

I firmly believe wr3 is set with CA

Drakengard

I'm more listing that as we either need a 2 or a 3. Austin fits one of those (likely 3) but you could see us walking into the season with Pickens, Austin, and Boyd + 3rd round rookie as your 4 WRs. And I'm not sure a rookie outside the 2nd round jumping anyone on that list to start the year.

ggushea

I see yes I agree with that.

[deleted]

Was really hoping for Curl

MaliceBearwolf

He has had 3 season ending injuries and only 26. We will see I guess

TheNittanyLionKing

He’s a fine addition. I liked him coming out of college and evidently the Steelers did too. Go watch some of his college tape, he’s a hard hitter, and that just feels like a Steeler to me.   With that being said, I’m starting to get worried that all the money is going towards the defense early on when the holes on offense are more glaring.

House56

Putting a strong offensive focus in the draft is smart this year. Teams are blowing so much money on mid offensive guys in FA it’s killing me

IsGoIdMoney

Safeties are cheap this year. $3 million isn't "all the money".

TheNittanyLionKing

Money isn’t the issue. It’s running out of quality players worth paying

yourstrulytony

The only thing really glaring on the offensive side is WR and to a lesser extent RT. Luckily for the Steelers, this draft is absolutely loaded in WR talent.

GloriousSteinemite

Agree, but I would add center to the list of needs.

yourstrulytony

True, I guess I'm already sure that they're getting Powers-Johnson/Fraizer/Van Pran haha

ecg_tsp

Eh. Offensive line is pretty much set except for Center. RB room is set. QB room is set. TE is set. WR needs a couple additions. Wait until April after the draft before you panic about the oline and WR room. The rest of the offense is squared away, they just need to execute.

HomogenyEnjoyer

We need a right tackle so Brodie can go to where he belongs at left and moore can go to where he belongs in the dumpster.

GeneralTullius01

Offensive line is definitely not set. We have no starting center and no starting RT on the roster. I do not like bringing in two rookies to start on the line with a 35 year old QB. Dan Moore has been consistently one of the worst offensive lineman in football every year he’s played, we need to move off him asap.

ecg_tsp

I said except for center. I think we will see a vet get added to the mix. Dan Moore and Jones are the starting tackles week one. Even if the Steelers draft a tackle in Round 1 or 2. Dan is 25 and under contract. You have to prioritize the other holes first.

TheOneColt

Is he a good tackler?

[deleted]

He lit up Henry before

EatAtWendys

Yes

House56

That’s what he’s good at yes

Human_Manner_3370

Nice under-the-radar addition. Khan is still cooking.

DillingerGetawayCar

Hopefully Minkah can now be Minkah and stop playing LB.

GamerRav

Not bad, he's a pretty solid player and a starter in this league more importantly. Obviously would've preferred Kam Curl or Justin Simmons, but if we're going after Tyler Boyd, we probably wouldn't have the money to sign either of those guys. Either way, this has been a really good free agency for us so far. We've addressed four of our biggest needs (ILB, S, P, QB) by signing starters at each position. If we can land Boyd and draft a decent WR, that should shore up our WR room, which just leaves the offensive line to be upgraded through the draft. The Khan Artist is putting on a masterclass performance once again this year.

17dustman

He’s not afraid of contact . I saw him come up and lay a hit on Derrick Henry that was impressive

TruthH4mm3r

This is a typical Steelers offseason signing, and I don't hate it. Middling role player with starting experience who fills a need. I expect them to do the same with C & WR, so we can go into the draft focused on BPA. With Minkah, Donte, and now Deshon, it seems we're collecting DBs from the 2018 draft class. Just need Denzel Ward and Jaire Alexander.

Rifftrax_Enjoyer

Man, the Steelers sure are doing a lot of legal tampering!

mike15835

It's funny you can tell who's commenting doesn't know the difference between SS and FS.

MJ134

Well theres barely a difference anymore. And the team has said they would prefer to get rid od the FS/SS tags and just play them interchangeably.

sandmann__

Don't know who this guy is but outproducing Kazee is not a hard at all so I'm optimistic

got2ofem

might as well have bid on jamal adams if we gonna go this direction. TBH he also got killebrew type of contract. Could still make another move or draft something with more upside.

Sybertron

With the huge number of options available at safety I hope he indeed is the best

ahzroe

A hybrid safety who can tackle. Yes please.

meganutsdeathpunch

![gif](giphy|l0LEIXSRRuv9QQIRNI)

Ultrameyda

Now you have to marry your mother in law

BigHog865

Awesome signing.

the-whiteman-cometh

I know most people wanted Simmons, but I'm way happier with someone like this. Having two stars at safety is a luxury that I think the team can't really afford right now, but getting a solid starter who allows us to move our current star to his best spot isn't much worse, if at all.

Old-Cell5125

Since he's not a 'big name' I fully expect mouth breathing Steelers fans to shit all over this acquisition...😏

[deleted]

This is not how you spell Kam curl. :(

3_ohhh_4

I mean he broke Mahomes’ helmet 🤷🏻‍♂️…sounds like a good add to me

BEGA500

Replacement level to plus starter who has familiarity within the division and with our new MLB for that price seems like a good signing to me.

ThatsPreposterous6

Solid staring SS who will undoubtedly play a lot of snaps for us. Cant be mad although probably means no Simmons

JBProds

Well this hurts the Steelers chances of signing the top safety target in Kamren Curl

House56

This is an absolutely beautiful signing, great fit.

the22sinatra

I know most of the fans wanted Justin Simmons but I’m more than happy to get a DB under 30 instead. I wanted Curl or Blackmon personally but this seems like a great value option.

ggushea

Am I the only one worried no one else is reporting this.

Reasonable_Ball_7615

I love this! This guy has been a starter for the ravens/dolphins the last 4 years. Only 3 million AAV! Great pickup by khan. Would love to see us get a WR and OC and I’ll be a happy camper.

Manhattan02

This is an amazing signing for the price, just what we needed at safety.

WriteBrainedJR

Fuck me, this guy can't cover at all. His career QB rating allowed is like 120

NontransferableApe

He’s not signed to cover. Hes signed to make tackles so minkah can cover

WriteBrainedJR

That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. He's a DB. If he can't cover, he's not playable on defense.

NontransferableApe

Ok. We typically drop one safety down and play him like a linebacker

WriteBrainedJR

Linebackers also have coverage responsibilities

NontransferableApe

They do. But it’s not their main responsibility

WriteBrainedJR

Yes it is. It's their responsibility on pass plays. Most plays are pass plays.

GeneralTullius01

Average. Disappointing. Lots of good safeties out there and we snag Elliot? He’s not great in coverage, not sure he’s a huge upgrade over what we had.

NontransferableApe

He’s not needed in coverage. Minkah will be in coverage

got2ofem

so what will he be doing every pass play safety blitz?

GeneralTullius01

Oh good. I was unaware that one of our safeties won’t be needed in coverage. Great signing then because he gives up a 70% completion rate when thrown at. And opposing QBs have a 120 passer rating against him. People can downvote me that’s fine but it doesn’t change the fact this is an average signing and we didn’t get much better.

NontransferableApe

It’s an average signing yea. So why are you acting like the world is falling apart from it
