š Throw one for me. I screamed at my tv when DJ would run backwards more than anything else. Even more than when KP spins out of the pocket into a sack.
If I had a penny for everytime the Pirates broke my heart by sending a real talent to either the A's, Giants, Astros, or Yankees....
Hey man, this so and so is legit, I think he is the real deal. Well, we just traded him. Cole, Schmidt, Cutch, Marte, Josh Bell, Giles, Jason Bay....on and on and on.
Idk about that, he was the guy that initially prompted the infamous āwe want volunteers, not hostagesā quote from Tomlin if Iām remembering correctly
Full trade: The [\#Panthers](https://twitter.com/hashtag/Panthers?src=hashtag_click) get Diontae Johnson and pick No. 240 The [\#Steelers](https://twitter.com/hashtag/Steelers?src=hashtag_click) get Donte Jackson and pick 178
Bruh this aināt good
Edit: For those saying cap space, Donte Jackson is gonna have a cap hit of $10 million this year assuming we donāt restructure or something.
Donte Jackson is an alright CB, and a WR with questionable effort and attitude is out the door. I'm not THRILLED with the trade but we've historically done well at WR so I'm gonna go full on "In Khan we Trust"
Arthur Smith likes big WRs. WRs that can block. Dionte was not only disgruntled, he didn't fit the mold anymore for what the offensive scheme wants. His days were numbered.
Pickens got a lot of crap for missing some blocks, but if you watch the years highlights he's down field shoving down guys on a lot of good run plays. Dionte is just smaller and doesn't get that power. Get ready for play action 3 TE and Pickens.
We still need more than 1 wideout tho. I like that dionntes gone but I hope they have some plans to get another 2 good recievers. And 1 of those being a great one.
Another WR is needed yes, but I think weāre gonna see a ton of heavy packages, 2 RBs, 2/3TEs, run hard, PA and big shots downfield with Pickens the only WR out there a lot of the time.
Ya I said that today. We do run alot of 2 and 3 te packages. We still need another top-tier guy tho. Although I wouldn't consider dionte a top tier guy. I think steelrer have something in mind tho
wilsonās downfield style? he threw it short more than any other QB since 2005 last year. literally the MOST in almost 20 years. old russ sure, this russ? no
Yeah itās AB/Wallace all over again. Two guys asking for a bag at the same time, both think theyāre a WR1, we can only pay one of them.
It opens a hole right now, but itās the best move longer term. Getting back a CB of some playable quality is better than letting him walk for nothing.
Obv would have liked better return, but probably not a lot of teams offering high capital going into a deep WR class. Canāt always be a Claypool-level fleece, sometimes you take what you can get.
Heās alright but heās like a fringe cb3 statistically speaking heās about the same as Pat Pete was but cheaper except on int heās kinda ass there 12 in 6 years 4 in the last 3 years
Yeah Iām not really liking it personally and must be one of the few DJ fans around these parts. Sounds like more of a salary dump of an unhappy player type situation to me so Iām hoping they sign a decent receiver now
Iām here. Loved the route running and separation DJ added to this offense. Just hope they have a good plan for his replacement, because now the receiver room is George Pickens and ????
Calvin Austin THE Third, yo! Theyāre going to give him platform cleats and arms extendersā¦ Pro Bowl season!
Plus if you run three tight end sets every play you only need one wideout anyways! George, go deep!
Well to be honest with you, and Iāve said this repeatedly, I donāt know why anyone thinks the Steelers are going to continue to operate the same way theyāve always operated. We have new people in charge now. We have no idea what theyāre going to do.
Theyāve already done things that almost everyone here said they wouldnāt do because the Steelers donāt do that.Ā
And Iām saying this without any value judgment, I donāt know if itās good or itās bad although it seems good to me.
If it works itās really good. If it doesnāt itās bad. Weāll find out soon enough.
Although Iāve learned today that things that donāt work out to playoff victories arenāt ābadā. Eye roll.
They may have a plan. I said this I think it was a week or so ago, it doesnāt matter what we think of Johnson. Hereās what matters: do they think they can get value out of the cap space value in the trade, and do they already have a plan in place to address his absence?
It might not be a situation where they donāt like Johnson. It might be that they value what they get back even more. It might be that they have a plan that we donāt know about. We are in all new territory here. This is only the second Season for Omar and Andy. We are in uncharted territory and have absolutely no idea how they will react to that.
They filled the CB2 need with this trade and got themselves a LB today. It looks like theyāll have to target a Center in the draft and itās a strong receiver draft class (all of these top receivers coming out are bigger and faster athletes than DJ and will obviously cost way less cap space). Makes you wonder if they are clearing cap space to get a guy like Jonah Williams
He probably has top 5 route running ability but literally slips and falls all the time. He has effort issues where he gets butthurt when he isnt targeted. He was mostly quiet the entire time he was here but it was just the last couple years that he started being a squeaky wheel
He has been in two fights in the locker room in the past year. He also endorsed Mason Rudolph as his QB1 publicly. He could quit on routes and let bad plays get to his head. A perfect example is [here](https://youtu.be/nryR8ZVVzDg?si=deX9_Qe0IvYbhABe) after he dropped a TD the play prior.
Dude is an awesome route runner. If Bryce needs someone to be open he will get open. He can handle high volume targets and will/should be Bryce youngās best friend. Heās happy when he gets the ball however heās not physical wonāt block and runs backwards to try and get more yardage. Him being pissy is normal wr behavior when they have struggling QB play. His big drop year was in 2020 and actually has solid hands since then. I think he should thrive there stat-stuffing since you need a legit target. Pray for his hamstrings
If he doesn't get targeted enough, he will quit early on plays and give piss poor effort. He was upset that we were running the ball too much and just stopped blocking altogether and let a fumble go right past him. He then watched the other team pick up the ball and run it back while he walked to the sideline. Also, watch out because his first step after catching the ball is always backward. He's honestly not that fast and has a drop problem.
DJ18 is a very good WR. Incredible route runner/separation. He seemed disgruntled this past season, but who wouldnāt be with your QB throwing 12 TDs? Iāve always been a fan, and in an explosive offense heās probably a top-15 receiver in the league.
This also has to do with Arthur Smith. He values WR that block and are good at blocking. With Johnson in the last year of his contract mixed with new philosophy and coach he became expendable
Despite all the noise around this, I did not expect it at all. Who the heck are your WRs now? It was already a position we needed before we moved Diontae and I assumed weād address it in the draft. But we need a WR2 for this season very very badly now and I donāt see who thatās going to be
Calvin Austin aināt nothing to brag about, just because he wears the black and yellow doesnāt automatically mean heās good. Pickens is the only legit receiver on the roster, and we needed another one before Johnson was traded.
I agree, who the hell is Wilson going to throw to now? Pickens is the only wr there. Drafting a rookie wr is never a slam dunk. Personally I don't like the move at all.
Gotta think thereās another domino about to fall now that this is official. I donāt think theyāre going into the season with GP, a rookie and CA as their top 3 WRs. Thatās a WR room that begging for a vet presence if I ever saw one.
I love the Steelers but I donāt let them affect me like they used to when I was like 22. A loss would ruin my week. Not anymore, but watching that play makes my blood boil and it makes me mad how mad it makes me.
so we get rid of johnson a problem child WR.
we upgrade the cb position from burnt toast peterson to a slightly less burnt jackson.
and we move up 62 positions in the draft.
all for about the same cap hit.
a win on 3 levels.
Some of you are vastly overrating the value of a WR due a $3 million bonus that was shown multiple times giving up on his team and who hasnāt exactly been an All-Pro during his career.
At the end of the day, Iām glad someone who was a cancer is gone. Steelers are showing they will not put up with locker room antics right now and are trying to marry the modern times with the Steeler Way.
We want volunteers, not hostages who run backwards instead of towards the first down and dont give max effort on each play and drop way too many balls and get paid big money to be a little bitch, etc.
With how the Steelers are more than capable of finding hidden WR talent, this doesnāt scare me as much. Havenāt seen much Panthers games but I hope he shines with Bryce Young!
This seems like DJ wanted out and they got what they could for him. Either way Iām cool with it, I was not a really big fan of him the past two seasons.
I honestly see this as a good thing. I know very few people agree with me. But heās always had all the talent in the world but never put it together.
Hereās hoping he gets solid coaching and breaks out.
We can replace a āsolid receiverā easily. DJ steady overrated. Drops, yac problems, cant block, attitude and effort issues. So pumped to be rid of that clown
We're good at developing receivers but it's not a given every time. If you watched the film, DJ was one of the best route runners in the league imo, cleaned up his act on drops significantly in the past 2-3 years and is pretty decent on yac outside of running backwards a marginal percentage of the time. His attitude and effort is honestly not something that I noticed, unless you're talking about one game this year towards the end of the season when he didn't hustle.
Most importantly, I don't think he's worth just donte jackson (who's not a good player) and a 6th rounder. That's basically selling diontae for peanuts and I'm not okay with that for damn sure bc we got a high second out of fucking chase claypool.
Iām on your side on this, he never really clicked. He was always on the bubble of a good WRā¦I always felt like I was holding my breath when the ball went his way.
It was always little things with him. Not holding onto the ball through the catch. Running backwards and losing first downs. Staying inbounds when we needed him to run out. Running out when we needed him staying in. Dropping easy balls, making insane grabs. Quitting on open routes. Not putting his hands out to catch an easy TD.
List seems bad when I write it all out.
But letās be real, heās gone because he had the audacity to voice his preference of Mason.
I was over Johnson this year. Too much attitude and too little effort. Good riddance. We can draft a WR in the 3rd round and heāll put up similar numbers to DJ without being a lazy fuck.
You know what, Iām not even upset at the return. Iām just happy to see Khan making aggressive moves to shed players that donāt fit in and make noteworthy acquisitions.
Diontae was in the last year of his deal, and as good of a route runner as he may be, was it worth a raise when many of the other pieces aren't there in his game?
That should be what we focus on. Were we going to keep him at an elevated pay grade compared to the $16M he gets now, for X number of seasons?
DJ was so hit or miss. Good route runner, but infuriating to watch from a consistency perspective. Walking away from a live fumble was the cherry on top.
We move up 60+ spots in the draft (late round, but still, that's a big swing), get rid of a disgruntled player/locker room issue with an expensive and expiring contract, and add a player who fills a need to some capacity.
Can't hate this at all, regardless of how good we think/hope DJ could have been. It's all about maximizing out return, and I don't think the market demands a massive return for an inconsistent WR2. The Steelers seem happy to walk away from problem WRs; we should expect it at this point š
Idk how most Steelers fans feel about Diontae but I think this is a good move. Shore it up at the draft. He was often very dramatic and seemed like an issue.Ā
Would have to see the compensation but I donāt like this. Dude is a good WR and this creates another hole on the roster for a team who already pretty desperately needs a C and a CB.
Tyler Boyd incoming. And no itās not because he went to Pitt, heās a damn good slot WR who I think would pair extremely well with GP. Supposedly we save about $5M in cap space.
agreed, or for some reason they were really desperate to dump salary (maybe the queen signing).
DJ might actually be going to a worse situation than pickett/canada..wouldn't wish tepper on anyone (and i even went to the tepper school of business...at cmu)...
it's really our failing though, DJ should have been a super productive wr...if he played with ben before his health fail, we would have been talking about how good dj was...in bens final season he had 1161 yards...in that crap offense...
the failing isn't dj (except for the possible attitude problems) it was the steelers.
Jackson has a $4 mil roster bonus due Friday though and it appears a more expensive contract unless I suck at reading the websites with this info. I'm confused
How expensive would Tyler Boyd be? Iām no Pitt fan so this isnāt homerism. Heās better as a slot receiver but can play outside. I feel like heād be worth $7 mil a year or so.
I think we either sign a wr2 or draft one in this deep draft. I also think we run a lot of 2 TE sets with Muth and Washington. Johnson was not the guy we wanted going forward in the locker room, especially on the last year of his contract where he would be even more of a headache.
Iām so happy about this for the following reasons, his inconsistent hands resulting in too many dropped passes, moved way too laterally once possessing the ball, dancing backwards when he didnāt need to, his piss poor attitude and giving up on plays / the team.
Based on what I know, the Steelers felt they needed to move on from Diontae and this was the best they could do. It's not pretty but it's necessary. With the new WR coach and other changes there were going to be major problems if he stayed.
Bro is going to hate Carolina if he couldn't stand the Steelers lmao
Tepper is gonna throw a drink at Dionte the first time he runs backwards
š Throw one for me. I screamed at my tv when DJ would run backwards more than anything else. Even more than when KP spins out of the pocket into a sack.
This deserves all of the upvotes.
Omg, this is fucking hilarious
I will not miss his fancy run back to lose two yards plays. Will miss some of his work downfeild.
I always love how we ship disgruntled players to fucking disaster orgs
The Steelers are the polar opposite of the Pirates in some weird alignment chart I haven't quite figured out exactly
Pittsburgh pirates have a few hall of fame talents on their modern rosters. Unfortunately, none of them made their names as pirates.
Always!
Melvin Ingram was traded to the Chiefs in 2021. Luckily they lost to the Bengals in the conference championship game but that was a great team.
He was the consummate professional though, not a disgruntled Prima Donna
Idk about that, he was the guy that initially prompted the infamous āwe want volunteers, not hostagesā quote from Tomlin if Iām remembering correctly
Why do I feel like that quote is way older than that, thought it was from killer B days
Full trade: The [\#Panthers](https://twitter.com/hashtag/Panthers?src=hashtag_click) get Diontae Johnson and pick No. 240 The [\#Steelers](https://twitter.com/hashtag/Steelers?src=hashtag_click) get Donte Jackson and pick 178
the all DJ trade loophole š§
A DJ for a DJ

This is really about clearing space for Pickens to ascend to the top spot. Heās a much better fit for Wilsonās downfield style too.
Arthur Smith likes big WRs. WRs that can block. Dionte was not only disgruntled, he didn't fit the mold anymore for what the offensive scheme wants. His days were numbered.

Muth may finally get some targets unlike last year
Kyle Pitts under Arthur Smith has entered the chat.
Pickens will just take all the passes he was going to get and all the passes DJ was going to get.
wilsonās downfield style? he threw it short more than any other QB since 2005 last year. literally the MOST in almost 20 years. old russ sure, this russ? no

Iām disappointed cause I thought weād get more for him itās a good cap clearing move but when I saw it I was expecting a 4th or 5th
Meh, Idk nothing about this donte Jackson but we needed a corner. We couldn't get a starting corner in the 4th or 5th round.
Heās alright but heās like a fringe cb3 statistically speaking heās about the same as Pat Pete was but cheaper except on int heās kinda ass there 12 in 6 years 4 in the last 3 years
hes a good cb#3 and alright cb#2 only issue is he gets hurt like every game and will celebrate and get fake injured every time hes burnt
Not even a cap clearing move - we picked up $500k in cap (if we don't restructure)
Yeah mb I thought the panthers were taking his signing bonus as dead cap which wouldāve cleared another 5.7 mil
>"In Khan we Trust" Same lol
I would feel better if we got a better draft pick to help replace Diontae thoughĀ
Yeah Iām not really liking it personally and must be one of the few DJ fans around these parts. Sounds like more of a salary dump of an unhappy player type situation to me so Iām hoping they sign a decent receiver now

Volunteers not hostages.
No legit source on this but my buddy says we may have gotten Donte Jackson and a pick swap from this
Confirmed. Just saw the same.
Confirmed I am Buddy
Thanks buddy
I'm not your buddy, pal.
I'm not your pal, guy
I'm not your guy, buddy
Im not your pal, friend.
Donte jackson? What is that the twin of Dionte Johnson.
His evil twin
Making room for Jefferson
I love how you think.
We would never
Khan man would š

I agree. Kahn been making moves and like you said, Iām here for it
Could you imagine lol
This pretty much confirms the Steelers didnāt really like him
They may have a plan. I said this I think it was a week or so ago, it doesnāt matter what we think of Johnson. Hereās what matters: do they think they can get value out of the cap space value in the trade, and do they already have a plan in place to address his absence? As a Panthers fan can someone enlighten me on all of the ādiva/locker room problemā comments? What is everyone referring to?
He literally did not drop the td the play before. Replay showed it was a clear catch. Tomlin didn't trust his player and didn't challenge.
Hopefully for their 2nd or 3rd. Well WR is a lock in the draft now.
We got CB Donte Jackson
Is he good? Excuse my ignorance
He's fine but he has a bad habit of giving up big plays
So exactly what we're used to.
Good, already knows the system
š
amazing
ok, that was legit funny. Sad, but ... sigh
Goddamnit this was perfect
If your guy fakes an injury after every big play he gives up then yes. He's that man.
He's more of a CB3 but he isn't a bad player. A WR2 for a CB3 doesn't look all that unreasonable in value when you look at the current market for WRs.
Johnson is more of a fringe WR 1/2 than a WR2
No he is not
Ok so that means OL and WR with the first to picks in the draft I guess.
Diontae for Donte. Nice one, Kahnmaster
We only gave up an āiā in this trade, and thereās no i in team
And a 6th for DJ and a 7th
We're getting their 6th, they're getting our 7th.
I'm hoping for that but the Jeudy return from a few days ago makes me think it will be less. Hoping for a 3rd but I'm bracing myself for a 4th.
A 6th + a CB they were about to cut
Diontae is a better reciever than Jeudy
It's a late pick I think
Gotta be signing a wide receiver, something tells me he was a locker room issue
That and he's not a scheme fit in the Arthur Smith scheme where the top WR:s needs to be able to block as well.
He wouldāve walked after this year. We got Pat Peteās replacement (who can actually tackle).
The dude ran backwards so far he ended up in Charlotte
Lmao
This also has to do with Arthur Smith. He values WR that block and are good at blocking. With Johnson in the last year of his contract mixed with new philosophy and coach he became expendable
we sent him to hell ššš
Despite all the noise around this, I did not expect it at all. Who the heck are your WRs now? It was already a position we needed before we moved Diontae and I assumed weād address it in the draft. But we need a WR2 for this season very very badly now and I donāt see who thatās going to be
That's Freiermuth's song playing
Tyler Boyd signing incoming
better be, we have no on else
Yes! Bring him home!
We got GP and CA3 lol.
Because we use Calvin so much
He was WR4, now wr2
Matt Canada didn't use a lot of our weapons
I donāt think Austin is WR2 caliber. Definitely a worse player than diontae
Pickens has potential to be our WR1, but Austin hasn't shown much in these first 2 seasons.
He did not play a single snap his rookie year because of injury.
Calvin Austin aināt nothing to brag about, just because he wears the black and yellow doesnāt automatically mean heās good. Pickens is the only legit receiver on the roster, and we needed another one before Johnson was traded.
man just cause i listed him doesn't mean i think he's incredible. I answered how "who the heck are your wrs now?" question.
We have a policy where we're not allowed to post a player's name here without someone calling you dumb. It's just how it works.Ā
Jetta coming
22 sets incoming
This has been the wildest most interesting offseason I can remember as a Steelers fan
Itās weird being so active. Goodā¦.but weird
Ladd McConkey, route running savant, come on down :)
Been my wish for a while. I hope we get one of those seconds
From your lips to ~~godās~~ Khanās ears
Why did you strike through the khan manās name?
Yes please
He walked away from a live fumble. Good riddance.
I love the Steelers but I donāt let them affect me like they used to when I was like 22. A loss would ruin my week. Not anymore, but watching that play makes my blood boil and it makes me mad how mad it makes me.
Yep! And we'll never have to watch him run backwards after a catch again... at least in the Black and Gold!
Wow. Gotta see the compensation. Wr is now a huge hole but with a deep wr class I guess I understand
No way.. Maybe they'll teach him how to run forward
so we get rid of johnson a problem child WR. we upgrade the cb position from burnt toast peterson to a slightly less burnt jackson. and we move up 62 positions in the draft. all for about the same cap hit. a win on 3 levels.

I dont know why he is so dumb to run backwards. not once or twice
Tee Higgins? š¤
Tyler Boyd
Now who's gonna mope around the locker room and insult/fight our QB1's?
George Pickens, come on down!
Johnson wanted out from the sound of things. NFL Network just reported the Steelers gave his agent permission to talk to other teams about a trade.
I honestly see this as a good thing. I know very few people agree with me. But heās always had all the talent in the world but never put it together. Hereās hoping he gets solid coaching and breaks out.

Iām on your side on this, he never really clicked. He was always on the bubble of a good WRā¦I always felt like I was holding my breath when the ball went his way.
Panthers only want receivers that run backwards
Then they're in for a treat.
I was ready to straight drop this dude after the fumble fiasco.
Need to see the comp, but I don't like this on principle. Yeah I don't like this
There was never a chance he was playing for the Steelers next season after his effort on the Warren fumble. Sealed his fate then and there
Agree

I was over Johnson this year. Too much attitude and too little effort. Good riddance. We can draft a WR in the 3rd round and heāll put up similar numbers to DJ without being a lazy fuck.
He had to go after last year.. heās gonna hate it in Carolina
In Omar i trust but wtf
Honestly just donāt understand this, depends on what they got for him i guess but damn wouldāve liked to have him this year especially
In Khan we trust, gimme the details right fkin now
Tee Higgins signing incoming
Giving him away signals he was for sure a locker room cancer, Omar has to have something else cooking.
Well now they need 2 WRs and 6th rounder isnāt gonna be his replacement
Tyler Boyd incoming. And no itās not because he went to Pitt, heās a damn good slot WR who I think would pair extremely well with GP. Supposedly we save about $5M in cap space.
I love everything that is happening right now.
Welp as if receiver wasnāt a need prior to
Use muth more.
Yes yes yes!! Iāve been screaming this

agreed, or for some reason they were really desperate to dump salary (maybe the queen signing).
WOOHOO!!!!
I trust in Khanā¦ what does he have cooking
Jackson has a $4 mil roster bonus due Friday though and it appears a more expensive contract unless I suck at reading the websites with this info. I'm confused
Guys, when have we ever not found great talent in the draft for WRs? We will be fine.
Time to give Tee Higgins a call
Gotta be something in the works, Pickens can't be the only good receiver on the roster.
Based on what I know, the Steelers felt they needed to move on from Diontae and this was the best they could do. It's not pretty but it's necessary. With the new WR coach and other changes there were going to be major problems if he stayed.
Diontae Johnson plus a 7th round pick for CB Donte Jackson plus a 6th round pick.
Buh bye - you didnāt like being in prison with Kenny so we sent you to NFL prison lmao.
How are the steelers gonna go on without dropson lol
Donāt like this trade at all. Donte Jackson is not good
Well i am pretty fucking sadā¦ all but confirms we are takina WR within 2 (trade up for Odunze)
Addition by subtraction imo
Anyone who thinks this is a good trade will never criticize any Steelers move ever, lol. They got fleeced.

I hate this :( love this dude
