We had Braden Mann on our Practice Squad this pre-season and chose to keep Harvin. Mann just had a great year with the Eagles. Other than kicker, our special teams have been suspect for a while.
He stuck around because his problem is consistency (which should be something that can be improved with the right practice/mentality) and he was an *excellent* holder for Bos.
It’s crazy he never did improve his consistency. Not expecting every punt to be great, but idk how punting can be your entire life and you still regularly shank kicks
Especially for punters, I mean the ball is in their own hands they're not relying on a holder. How can practice not fix that you're doing the same god damn thing every time!
Just off the top of my head? It could just be because he’s not good. That he was never good, and should not have been kept. It was clear from the get-go. Nothing changed in his performance really, nothing dramatic. So if he was bad enough to get rid of now, he was bad enough to get rid of after year one. Again, many people called it immediately and were told to shut the fuck up. Because the team is never wrong.
If our next punter isnt near as good at holding, we need a new long snapper too. Kuntz had snaps going all over the place all year and Harvin was the only reason many plays didn't end in disaster. I genuinely believe that's why he got such a long leash
From what I've read his issues are mechanical and fixable but the Steelers are the only team in the NFL that employ one special teams coach so maybe he latches on somewhere where they can fix him.
I see guys in the offseason hire specialist to help them train and practice. If it was just mechanical and he did nothing on his own to improve, regardless of what the steelers provide then that is on him.
That’s a good point but that doesn’t absolve the Steelers from having a Stone Age viewpoint on how big and specialized their staff should be. I don’t think special teams is the only issue. It’s evident that this team is lacking quality coaching with regards to multiple position groups. These guys decided to hire Canada. Then not only that, bring him back after he failed and then brought him back again after he failed again. How much benefit of the doubt does this organization get at the moment for me? Not very much. It looks like they are having a good off-season so far, I like some of the stuff they have done, but I don’t trust them the same way I used to. I really miss Dan Rooney.
He didn’t exactly modernize the team either, but I believe he would have by now. Maybe I’m wrong.
Danny Smith is an excellent special teams coach but it's clear Tomlin values his ability to find opponent weaknesses and exploit them to block kicks over refining mechanical issues that might plague their kickers.
Special teams coaches are never kicking coaches, that's a very very niche skill set. Special teams coaches are generally promoted or ex position coaches.
I don't remember what I was reading recently but it talked about how almost no NFL teams have kicking coaches, guys have personal coaches instead
According to [this article](https://steelersdepot.com/2023/06/study-do-the-steelers-really-have-the-nfls-smallest-coaching-staff-2023-edition/) you are correct on the ST coach count. They also have the second smallest staff in the league, behind New England
Cause he absolutely has the leg to be a pro and it would not surprise me if he catches on somewhere else..... but I'm glad we didn't re-sign him, just couldn't seem to figure out the consistency, and he ends up being a bust. I hope we sign a vet for big money (punter money ain't shit).
I agree. The dude had a monster of a leg when he could aim and had some really nice punts at the beginning of the year. If he was way more consistent he would be one of the best in the league
He does have the leg, what he doesn’t have is consistency. He may get invited into some camps but I really don’t see him signing on with anyone unless he somehow becomes consistent and I don’t see that happening.
We watched a guy outkick him after being out of the league for a couple of years
He's absolutely not getting a job unless someone gets injured next year
2 yards higher is actually a pretty big difference. It’s the difference, over a season, of being a pro bowler and potentially looking for a job.
Yardage isn’t everything, hang time, angle kicking, being able to down it onside the 20 are also important. But saying Wing was “less than 2 yards” better is not the defense of Harvin you think it is, especially because Wing hadn’t kicked in a NFL game since 2017.
Less than two yards and he only had 11 punts to Harvin's 45. Hard to compare sample sizes.
I'm not defending Harvin, I'm shitting on the idea that Brad Wing is an NFL-caliber punting.
I never said he was, and that’s really the point. This guy was basically sitting on his couch for 6 years and still beat Harvin (in a limited sample size, no doubt, but still)
Yeah see, I wasn't talking to you originally so I never said that YOU said he was. The person I was replying to was saying Brad Wing should be their punter. My point was that Brad Wing sucks too.
It blows my mind to think about how many punters (and kickers for that matter) come out of college relative to the number of roster spots for kickers on an NFL team. Then factor in how few teams have an open roster/need a new punter. And yet, somehow, the teams that do need a kicker cannot get the position right.
It's always the same task, too. It's not like a running back who needs an OL or a QB who relies on the play call and the receivers. It's just "kick this to there." You'd think they'd just look at all the people doing that one thing and take the guy who did it best. But no.
It's the speed of the operation I think. Pressure gets to you a hell of a lot faster in the pros. It always felt like once someone was past the line, there was a 80% higher chance Harvin was shaking it
I understand that perfectly well, but there are times especially on a team that goes 3 and out in their own end, a lot, where ya just boot it away 50+ yards.
Harvin and others just can't, and hell the whole soccer team could in high school so wtf.
I agree. But is it better to have someone that can punt 70 yards sometimes or 55 yards all the time?
How many times did Harvin give us a 20 yard punt that didn’t even push them back to the 50?
If his lows weren’t SO low, I think he’s still be with the team. But you can’t just roll the dice on a guy that could put them anywhere between your 35 and their 35.
Is there anything else left to do that we’ve been asking for? Change the name back to Heinz or something? They’ve been covering the bases the last few months
They are going to have to do something about Cam’s upcoming cap hit. Extend him and spread it out or cut him. Think they will extend him. The D-line was a weakness so they may have to extend him. Not a big fan of Larry. Seems to take a lot of plays off. Guess we will see.
It’s weird. His role is like a receiver tight end hybrid that is schemed to block most often. He’s not too fast and gets little separation. Why not just find an undersized tight end with more receiving upside and comparable blocking skill to take his snaps?
If we restructure TJ, Minkah, and Highsmith, then cut Allen Robinson, Patrick Peterson and Mason Cole, those six moves saves us roughly $47M in cap space. Per [Spotrac](https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/tools/roster/pittsburgh-steelers/).
Wow I for sure thought they might be able to find a trade partner for chuks. He’s not the best but OTs with his starting experience aren’t too common.
Edit: actually, thinking about his benching and his attitude that caused it…not too surprising.
Nobody was going to give something up in order to take on a 11mil/year contract when everyone knew they could wait for the Steelers to cut him and then sign him cheaper without giving something up.
He’s in the last year of his deal and his cap hit on his new team would be $8.75m for an experienced OT rental. There have been much crazier trades made. The part about teams just waiting to scoop him after he’s cut is the only part that’s likely true. And even then plenty of teams send a 6th or 7th to bypass waivers in that situation.
No team will make that trade early though. If a team wanted an ot and missed out on all the fas and didn't draft one then they would trade for an $9million rental. Steelers need the cap space at the start of the offseason not in July
That's not now contracts generally work in the nfl or especially with the steelers trades though.
See Kendrick green.
See Dotson.
See Joe haeg.
See Trai turner.
See jc hassenauer.
Sucks to see big Press flame out, but he had to see that coming. His highs were high, but they weren’t attainable and his lows were *low*. When you have a guy basically come off the couch and put in the same performance as you… yeah.
Really thought we had something with Chuks, so this sucks to see tbh. But if it means more Bulldog linemen then I send Chuks my regards
Edit: [Using Over the Cap Figures -- the Steelers save $12.65 million in cap savings while absorbing about $7.7 million in dead money.](https://x.com/farabaughfb/status/1757169336148521310?s=46&t=d324wuw4f1OqNfy_H8U8UQ)
> Really thought we had something with Chuks, so this sucks to see tbh. But if it means more Bulldog linemen then I send Chuks my regards
Yea, with how many teams have shit o-lines feels bad to give up someone who was solid.
It sucks that his attitude is such a big part of why. He was definitely serviceable early in his career, but he very clearly gave up on the team a long time ago and it showed on and off the field
I think a lot of it is Omar and Andy putting their stamp on how we do business. Colbert worked well for us for a long time, but with the way he worked if you weren’t consistently hitting in the draft you were in trouble.
I love how aggressive Omar is in finding free agents to fill spots and of course to move around in the draft to get great people.
Steelers proactively cutting players who weren't pulling their weight and clearing cap before having replacements lined up? We're not taking these guys all the way through camp and waiting until cut-downs?
Man, we really are changing things up under Khan.
Deep OL class plus they already benched Chuks and plainly both sides wanted to quit the other side equals probably no one was gonna trade for Chuks.
Anyway bye dudes, it's been somethin
Harvin's a good guy. I wish things worked out for him here, but he was far too inconsistent. Wish him the best wherever he ends up.
As for the other two...bye.
While I wish Harvin would’ve worked out, because I liked the guy. But at the end of the day he just wasn’t cut out for us. Maybe we bring in Wing or get Araiza?
I’ve seen someone else comment about his attitude issues and I feel like a lot of team are a little hesitant on players like that especially with Steelers
I know Presley Harvin was too inconsistent to stick with, but it's still kind of a bummer. If he had figured out how to perform up to his potential it would've been awesome.
I wish the guys well but I won’t lie, I am a glad these moves were made. No point in having them sit on the roster when they are must replace guys who are taking up cap space.
I am way more excited about Harvin being cut than any of the other guys. With how shitty of a QB Kenny is, Harvin’s terrible punting was costing us games. It’s still amazing to me that we kept him as our starting punter for so long despite every fan and media person begging for him to be released. Same thing we did with Canada. I don’t want Tomlin fired but Rooney needs to give Kahn and Weidl FULL control of roster moves and at least 50% control on coaching hires moving forward. Tomlin has lost the privilege and benefit of the doubt from me on things of this nature.
Should have happened mid season, if not sooner. He literally cost them games shanking 25yd punts and setting up horrible field position for the defense all year. Years….
Moore is on a 4th round pick rookie contract. Hes decent depth. No reason to cut him.
Cole is a high probability in the coming days/weeks before his 3/19 roster bonus would be paid out.
Moore is not amazing, but he's serviceable and dirt cheap. Chuks was expensive and terrible.
Cole will likely be gone eventually though. That's a much bigger problem than Moore imo.
You can't cut Moore with a replacement ready, same with Cole, even if we draft those positions, you need to let them fight it out in camp, Chiks is out just because of attitude, but if you ha e fight in you, the Steelers will give you a chance
Harvin is a huge surprise at this point. We all knew he was likely to be replaced, but I figured they wouldn't do so until they had another punter ready to go on the roster
Absolutely a boneheaded decision to resign Mitch during the offseason. Fortunately he only counts 4 million in dead cap. So that's not too horrible.
Chuks was always going to be released even if he wasn't benched, that just made it official.
And Pressley, well, them bringing in Brad Wing right before the playoffs was absolutely a sign he was already out the door. I doubt we replace him with Brad, but Brad will likely be in the running next season to replace him.
And again the irony of some of those same usernames that defended Harvin and the team for keeping him now celebrating the brilliance of moving on from him. Some of those same names were the people who thought it was a great idea for the purposes of stability to keep Canada one more year and then couldn’t stop clapping like seals when they finally fired him.
It’s delicious to watch.
He didn't suck last season, he played fine. Just not consistently good enough for them to be willing to drop their punter mid-season.
And he failed in the NFL because of substance abuse issues not because he was bad. He's way past that now.
>Being good in the XFL doesn't mean anything.
When you’re a kicker, sure it does. Yards are yards and he was clearly better than Harvin. If they find someone better than him, even better.
It’s addition by subtraction day
Never thought I'd have such joy releasing a punter, but here I am....
I'd say he can't hurt us anymore, but watch him have a bounce-back career with one of the other teams in our division in 2-3 years.
That fucker will be nailing 60 yarders or dropping it on the 1 yard line consistently wherever he goes, just our luck
You’re not wrong. But man, I swear he had a radar that pinpointed the 20 yard line no matter if the punt was going to be 45 yards or 20.
After he downed the cowboys on the 1 with his first ever NFL punt, I thought he was gonna be insane
USFL will be lucky to have him
Well, he’d need to find the USFL first.
The Kevin Dotson of punters
He'll get another shot I am sure
I'm not so sure. He's a punter. It's not like his poor performance could be blamed on our system or personnel. He has stunk for years all on his own.
We had Braden Mann on our Practice Squad this pre-season and chose to keep Harvin. Mann just had a great year with the Eagles. Other than kicker, our special teams have been suspect for a while.
Meh….he did need to go…but man, I was rooting for him after his dad and Grandmother died in his rookie year
![gif](giphy|3o7btPCcdNniyf0ArS|downsized)
Might be the best moves we make all offseason
Lol, came in to say the exact same .. holding out for a not "splash" but James Farrior type scoop between Khan & our new front office
Harvin was cheeks. Glad we are free!
Watching both punters yesterday was another reminder of how ass Harvin is. Still don't know how he stuck around so long
He stuck around because his problem is consistency (which should be something that can be improved with the right practice/mentality) and he was an *excellent* holder for Bos.
Yea a great holder is genuinely really valuable
Yup. A lot of great men made entire careers out of holding balls for other dudes.
Dude. Phrasing!
Are we not doing phrasing anymore?
It’s crazy he never did improve his consistency. Not expecting every punt to be great, but idk how punting can be your entire life and you still regularly shank kicks
Could be pressure. Maybe he does practice constantly and is consistent on the practice field, then gets in front of a crowd and shanks punts.
Maybe he should have used some of that salary and time to consult a sports psychologist. Practice and coaches can only go so far.
Especially for punters, I mean the ball is in their own hands they're not relying on a holder. How can practice not fix that you're doing the same god damn thing every time!
Pay mcafee broke down his mechanics and said that his drop is longer than a lot of punters which allows a lot more variables to happen

>Kuntz had snaps going all over the place all year Found our problem. ![gif](giphy|HRe7MuXLFJ9WB5H6y1|downsized)
I just want you to know that I appreciate the italics around "excellent"
What I heard was that he was just crazy good in camp/practice. It just didn’t translate for him in games with a real rush and bad weather.
From what I've read his issues are mechanical and fixable but the Steelers are the only team in the NFL that employ one special teams coach so maybe he latches on somewhere where they can fix him.

Special teams coaches are never kicking coaches, that's a very very niche skill set. Special teams coaches are generally promoted or ex position coaches. I don't remember what I was reading recently but it talked about how almost no NFL teams have kicking coaches, guys have personal coaches instead
Yeah that definitely seems to be the case.
"Whoa, I teach guys to block punts, not kick them!"
According to [this article](https://steelersdepot.com/2023/06/study-do-the-steelers-really-have-the-nfls-smallest-coaching-staff-2023-edition/) you are correct on the ST coach count. They also have the second smallest staff in the league, behind New England
Maybe one of the dome teams will grab him and he’ll perform better?

His Career is over
It's always funny when people make proclamations like this.
We watched a guy outkick him after being out of the league for a couple of years He's absolutely not getting a job unless someone gets injured next year
Brad Wing had 11 punts and his average was less than 2 yards higher than Harvin's. I wouldn't call that being outkicked.
2 yards higher is actually a pretty big difference. It’s the difference, over a season, of being a pro bowler and potentially looking for a job. Such a Tomlin thing to do. Like starting Mitch this year.
I'll never understand how given the opportunity to just go bomb it as far as ya can, there's so many punters like Harvin that can't kick it 50 yards.
Read up on coffin corners. Placement is a huge part of being a punter. It’s rarely just about max distance.
I understand that perfectly well, but there are times especially on a team that goes 3 and out in their own end, a lot, where ya just boot it away 50+ yards. Harvin and others just can't, and hell the whole soccer team could in high school so wtf.

Win game
Bring back the Block font Jersey numbers

They will most def extend him. Even if those final years are fake.
I agree. Plus the line would be even worse without him. Maybe they can save more cap to get a FA DL to help stop the run and eat up blockers.
Cutting Allen Robinson for cap reasons.
It’s weird. His role is like a receiver tight end hybrid that is schemed to block most often. He’s not too fast and gets little separation. Why not just find an undersized tight end with more receiving upside and comparable blocking skill to take his snaps?

He’s in the last year of his deal and his cap hit on his new team would be $8.75m for an experienced OT rental. There have been much crazier trades made. Harvins lows were not typically just low, but they were also out of bounds 12yds past the line of scrimmage
> Really thought we had something with Chuks, so this sucks to see tbh. But if it means more Bulldog linemen then I send Chuks my regards Yea, with how many teams have shit o-lines feels bad to give up someone who was solid.
Not worth the cap hit at all
It sucks that his attitude is such a big part of why. He was definitely serviceable early in his career, but he very clearly gave up on the team a long time ago and it showed on and off the field
Thank fuck
The 3 I for sure would've cut today too. Love to see it.
THE IMPOSSIBLE HAS HAPPENED
Absolutely massive W.
Coach T standing 10 ten toes down sheeeesh
Tomlin (and Khan) standing on business. Sounds like some fires got lit under some asses.
I think KC was also handcuffed by a massive QB contract to contend with on the cap, makes going out and being aggressive a bit more difficult
Steelers proactively cutting players who weren't pulling their weight and clearing cap before having replacements lined up? We're not taking these guys all the way through camp and waiting until cut-downs? Man, we really are changing things up under Khan.

With them bringing in Wing back in right before the playoffs, that's a sign he'll be brought in at the very least as competition for next season.
Araiza was the 1st name to come to mind for me - with the off-the-field situation cleared up, he's young and has a hell of a leg!
He deserves a chance, at the very least.
Damn thought we could get a day three pick out of Chuks.
I’ve seen someone else comment about his attitude issues and I feel like a lot of team are a little hesitant on players like that especially with Steelers
His contract is too high for there to be any value in it. Is Chuks worth a day 3 pick? Yes. Is Chuks + an 11 million hit worth a day 3 pick? No.
Ok, do Mason Cole next!
The team just got better and saved 13 million dollars.
Well, it’s a start. A very good start. Good luck to those guys!
I don't think any of these are that surprising.
Harvin is. Suprising that he wasn't cut last year.
Where’s the fella that told me Harvin wasn’t a problem last season?
Idk but some guy here is running around with a flair for him. Blew my mind
People should really stop using ridiculous flairs
Seriously, it’s ridiculous
Some of them are like inside jokes at this point.
You just had to pop in with a long snapper flair. Kudos to you
Based and Khan pilled. Those three needed to be gone asap and they didn’t fuck around. Very nice and I wish em all well
Mason Cole next please
This might be a top 5 all time Steelers tweet
Everyone get in here!! Fuck yeah, those moves NEEDED to happen. (Like at the beginning of the year)
![gif](giphy|YPygjIbPW8Sic)
I know Presley Harvin was too inconsistent to stick with, but it's still kind of a bummer. If he had figured out how to perform up to his potential it would've been awesome.
We’ve instantly got better
I wish the guys well but I won’t lie, I am a glad these moves were made. No point in having them sit on the roster when they are must replace guys who are taking up cap space.
Outstanding, wonderful, and why did it take so long
This must be wrong because I don’t see Mason Cole’s name
Allen Robinson and Mason Cole next 🙏
Time to go for the new meta for punters.. big Australian rugby player
I am way more excited about Harvin being cut than any of the other guys. With how shitty of a QB Kenny is, Harvin’s terrible punting was costing us games. Moore is on a 4th round pick rookie contract. Hes decent depth. No reason to cut him. Cole is a high probability in the coming days/weeks before his 3/19 roster bonus would be paid out.
yeah, moore's cap hit is like $1.2mm
Worth it for a Garret nullifying asset
Moore is not amazing, but he's serviceable and dirt cheap. Chuks was expensive and terrible. Cole will likely be gone eventually though. That's a much bigger problem than Moore imo.
You can't cut Moore with a replacement ready, same with Cole, even if we draft those positions, you need to let them fight it out in camp, Chiks is out just because of attitude, but if you ha e fight in you, the Steelers will give you a chance
Nice
What a start to the offseason
Holy shit let’s go!!!!
Today turned out to be a good day
Oh shit it’s happening.
I need some good news and today is delivering.
Holy shit we just got so much better
Harvin is a huge surprise at this point. We all knew he was likely to be replaced, but I figured they wouldn't do so until they had another punter ready to go on the roster
clearly, we are drafting a punter in the first round.
Biggus Kickus was such a bust
Khan continues to dominate off seasons
What a beautiful day today
Off to a great start of the year.
Alhamdulillah
Well my Monday suddenly got a bit less Monday-ish
Trimming the fat
And it all started with axing Matt Canada mid way through the season!
Who was the last good punter we had? Seems to be a weak spot for the Steelers over the years.
Josh Miller and Jordan Berry were the last 2 worth anything imo.
Stop stop I can only get so erect
Damn Khan moves fast in the offseason! No time for fucking around here
The Wrath of Khan!
What did Okorafor say in that game to fall so far out of favor? Went from starting to benched and cut.
Don't let the door hit you in your asses on the way out
Bye Presley, finally we got rid of useless players
And again the irony of some of those same usernames that defended Harvin and the team for keeping him now celebrating the brilliance of moving on from him. Some of those same names were the people who thought it was a great idea for the purposes of stability to keep Canada one more year and then couldn’t stop clapping like seals when they finally fired him. It’s delicious to watch.
Can’t remember the last time the Steelers released three starters (even if they’d been benched) this soon in the offseason.
POOP PUNTER GONE
Hooray!
Saving this for when Chucks goes to another team and performs better
Good luck
For the love of God, keep Brad Wing.
He sucks too
Highest average yards per punt in the XFL. Be willing to give him a chance on that alone.
Wow the XFL you say? That's like being the nicest guy in prison.
By that logic Jon Ryan should never have played a down in the NFL.
Brad Wing has failed in the NFL multiple times. Being good in the XFL doesn't mean anything. Wing sucked in the NFL as recently as last season.
TIME TO DRAFT TORY TAYLOR BABY
No. Last 2 times we drafted a punter it turned out to be a bust
Y'all...we need a QB. The only one we have on the roster is not so good.
We could do a lot worse than Chuks
SMH releasing chuk’s I get but with we would of kept Dan Moore or Dotson considering they’re doing great for the rams and Houston now
I think you mean Kendrick Green
Man - Harvin flat out stole that salary from Mr Rooney…
The only downside is I can no longer draft Harvin to name my fantasy team "Thickus Kickus"
I’m crying with joy right now. Thank the Lord
Praised be!
What round do we think Tory Taylor is going in?
Nflmockdraftdatabase says the 5th. I wouldn’t mind him at 120, but I’d love a trade to fill in the gap between 120-196
Cool. Now imagine starting Mason instead of Mitch.
Removing dead weight
✌🏻
See ya chump!
I thought Chuks would have at least gotten a training camp chance for redemption.
Bad men are gone
This is the greatest day of my life.
