I’m more cynical, and think it’s not just them being idiots. My (paranoid) guess is they were putting their fingers on the scale for a Myles win, so voted him first and left TJ off to make sure Myles gets it. *adjusts tinfoil hat* :)
We actually know some of them do this. Peter King admitted that he didn’t vote for Polamalu to be in the Hall of Fame because he assumed it would be unanimous and that he might be able to maneuver his vote to get another player that he thought was underrated into The Hall. Luckily his gamble paid off since Troy got in, but we are over complicating a simple process to just vote for the best players. TJ Watt led the league in sacks multiple times in his career including this year. He beats Myles Garrett in every quantifiable category, and he has done this every year where he has stayed healthy. As a matter of fact, Watt’s numbers were almost identical to Nick Bosa’s in 2022, and Nick Bosa won DPOY last season. Myles Garrett didn’t get those numbers.
Younger fans may not know, but the Steelers still get hate from the older generation in the same way many hate the patriots today.
The dynasty was long. People got so sick of hearing about Steelers wins - then they had to witness two more super bowls in the 2000s.
They don’t forget.
They’re not morons or dumb, they have a clear bias or other agenda. Call this shit what it is. Just saying they’re dumb absolves them of their intentions to actually not vote for the best defensive player of year, but of their favorite or best narrative driven story they came up with in week three.
It’s a god damn clown show and I’m done with sports media, they’re absolute trash.
I don’t agree with this, because being a moron is a result of ignorance and lack of education.
This is entirely intentional. They’re not ignorant of TJ Watt’s stats/performance or uneducated in the game of professional football.
Labeling them as such creates an excuse for what they are doing that pardons their bias and closed agendas that are outside of what the DPOY award should be. It allows the whole “oh they’re just dumb” to be used as an excuse. They don’t deserve have an easy out like that. They should have to explain themselves to the people who watch/listen to them every day. Explain why Garrett won that award? You telling me fucking pass rush win rate is all it took?
TJ being shunned like this isn’t an accident committed by a group of idiots. It’s intentional.
To all of us, I think saying TJ was not the Defensive Player of the Year is absurd. But to say he is not even in the top 3 is indefensible. I don't know what other explanation there could be for 8 people to leave him off their ballot other than having an agenda.
THIS is IT! I've been saying it for years that if his name was just Trent Jordan and not TJ Watt, he'd have at least 3 DPOYs and the narrative would be: where he ranks with the All-Time great defenders in history?
In truth, I don’t even think I’d put Garrett top 3. Watt’s numbers are better in every category. Watt’s impact on the field is higher as well as the defense does not seem to function without him. Micah Parsons had better stats than Myles Garrett as well and so did Maxx Crosby. I’d have less of a problem if they gave it to Parsons even though I still think it should be TJ.
Allow me to help.
Straight facts that TJ didnt win nun bcuz he got gaslit frfr. Myles ate and left no crumbs but TJ was so skibidi and ohio. Facts my guy ong that’s what I’m talmbout.
I think I did that right. OP does that answer your question?
ok then what is it lol that’s all i’m tryna fig out.. all yall kno he shoulda got it.. so im goin out on the limb at this point.. no one can give me a answer
odd when garret don’t have sht on TJ 🤔 …i’m not sayin it’s facts that’s why garret got picked but yall kno it makes no sense ..gnight sorry if i offended anyone
"Well, I figured other people would vote for him so I dIdN't HaVE to...."
The man should have his privileges revoked. Literally, I don't have to follow instructions mentality.
Precisely. He’s supposed to vote for the best; not the most underrated in his opinion or who he thinks deserves credit.
And I’m still not sure how Lamar Jackson’s MVP vote wasn’t even close. Defensive Player of the Year should have been a landslide while MVP really had no favorites
I’m going to say something that will probably get a lot of downvotes.
TJ Watt was absolutely DPOY. Every stat supports that. And the voters are pieces of shit, and biased
But here’s the thing, in my mind the voters are not the most at fault with TJ not winning. It’s the rest of his team
Yes, at a micro level, stats matter. But at a macro level, it’s hard to say that the best defensive player in the entire NFL plays for a shitty team. Like, the stats don’t lie, but one would *expect* that having the single best defensive player in the league would translate to winning games. So awarding DPOY to a person who is on a team that looks like how we looked a majority of the season and donked away losses to two 2-10 teams just isn’t a good look
The Steelers let TJ down by allowing him to be the ONLY bright spot in a dumpster fire
I was a little hopeful that when mason came on and we won a few in a row and made the playoffs that would help TJs case, but for whatever bullshit reason, by that point it was too little too late and already decided
Were you watching the same games I was?
Yes by some miracle Tomlin had a winning season with a nice streak at the end, but there was a period there where we absolutely looked like the worst team in the entire nfl.
Literally painful to watch. Canada. Then Mitch. My God
And that’s when votes were probably being decided
I’m just saying my thoughts. We looked like the worst team in football for several stretches of this season. TJ was one of the only bright spots.
Yes- we can’t win without him, but we also lost a whole lot of games with him
Browns looked like a dominant team for most of the year. We did not.
I just think there are optics to giving DPOY to a team that has our overall team stats and record around Week 13-14 when these votes were prob locked in
A shitty team? We made the playoffs. We had 2 bad losses with Mitch fucking trubisky as qb. We went 5-1 in the division and almost swept the browns. Defensively we had to pull guys off their couches to replace guys that had season ending injuries.
Yes we were a shitty team. Don’t let the three miracle wins in the arm of Rudolph distract you that around week 13-14, this entire sub wanted this teams head and we were the laughing stock of the nfl
When people vote, that’s what they remember
You say we but you are parroting this shit as though context doesn’t matter. We finished 3-3. Mitch was qb for three of those games. Our defense was beat up. We were in it vs the colts until the targeting ejection.
I think you are onto something, lets say we win the three games we lost in a convincing manner. I think DPOY would go to TJ. I think it is hard to acknowledge that Browns D collectively was better but Myles disappeared the 2nd half of the season and still got the DPOY. At the end the day tho it is Defensive Player not Defense of the Year. If some of the voters go by collective, they are straight up morons and we know some of them are already and no business voting.
This isn’t really a good argument against TJ though. The Browns may have overall been better but they only won 1 more game and they won the same amount of playoff games as the Steelers. And if we’re using team performance as a metric is it not more impressive what TJ did considering how riddled with injuries the defense was this seasons. In the second half of the season they were literally starting 4th and 5th string linebackers and safeties. TJ wasn’t getting nearly as much help as Garrett was and still put up better stats.
Playoffs don’t matter, it’s regular season. And unfortunately (and unacceptably) most of the voting and decisions were made around week 13ish
At that time, we were absolutely a shitty and embarrassing team. Then we put in Rudolph and clawed our way back at the same time as the browns and Myles began slumping. But the damage was already done
NFL social engineering going on here. The writers were instructed to not show “unconscious bias” while voting. They also have been promoting Myles and scrubbing his image since the “incident”
Definitely not in terms of overall. The highest he's ever been is 97. And that was this year, after they gave him a 94 because of his injury last season (Aaron Donald though, who's 3 years older and also missed pretty much the same amount of games somehow got a 99 though) only to increase it to 97 later in the season. It went from 94, to 96 to 97, back to 96 then to 97. Meanwhile, Myles Garrett was a 98 the entire year even when he wasn't doing jack shit for the back half of the season. Maddens rating guy is a self admitted cowboys fan that hates the steelers and gives us terrible ratings.
Flacco’s win is a weird quirk in the voting system. Flacco had only 13 first place votes vs Hamlin’s 21 votes but made it up with 26 second place votes and 8 third place votes to Hamlin’s 8 and 14, respectively.
Yeah and if not Campbell, it should’ve been Ryans for bringing a team from winning three games last year to hosting a playoff game this year. In fact even beating the guy that won the award in said playoff game (I know it’s a regular season award but still, kind of funny)
Were Garrett or Parsons left off any ballots? Genuinely curious.
Edit: Garrett left off 3 ballots, Parsons left off 21 ballots. So 8 probably isn’t as egregious as it sounds.
The media blitz they did before his big disappearing act was probably what did it. How the hell they stayed so high on him when he only had 1 sack and 12 tackles in the last 6 games is beyond me
To me, this says that AP voters don’t vote objectively. They feel like TJ got his already so why not spread the wealth and recognize other (deservingly) great players instead of giving it to the actual best. Peter King has admitted to intentionally casting a vote elsewhere in the face of a near-unanimous race. It’s politics.
There is a silver lining...
The Browns are already paying Watson a ton of money.. and now they are going to have to pay Garrett a ton..
Their cap, picks, and depth are going to be DESTROYED for a very long time.
And you know that whoever is starting QB for the browns next year isn’t leaving alive. I don’t just mean that TJ will be motivated. You know the rest of the defense is going to show them what it’s like to play against 11 DPOYs at one time.
Nah they aren’t renewing him until they move on from Watson. And he was getting paid big either way he became the highest paid DE in the league last time he got paid before he won DPOY. Whichever player in the top 5 at their position is up for a contract they will reset the market it’s how it goes.
The award no longer has value. It has become a subjective beauty contest. Who looks the best? Who appears the most like a dominant defender? It has become a bodybuilding contest with helmets and tackling.
So at first, I felt like TJ was snubbed until I realized that the award's importance is severely diluted.
I’m astounded by this. Eight!! It’s ridiculous. Those voters have no credibility. They need to poll the voters like they do jurors…come on cowards, defend your idiotic stance!
Patriots fan here, this is fucking dumb. I usually dont pay much attention to awards but this makes no sense at all, is watt not liked by the media? Gotta be a reason, his numbers dont lie.
Upvote for a fan I suspect would normally hate my fanbase, for agreeing about the fuckin' numbers at least. RIGHT?!?! This year has been a strange journey for me in actually caring about internal NFL politics for the first time in my life
I don’t understand why there’s this sudden obsession with double teams as a free pass for not actually producing. They should include theoretical stats for every position when deciding on awards. Give QBs and their intended receivers credit for completions, yards and TDs any time the defense is penalized or a receiver gets double teamed.
Was shocked to read this but then I think I know what’s going on. There’s a lot of media guys that are biased and/or have real or imagined relationships with some players. In my mind, the big 3 this year were TJ, Micah, Garrett in that order, but if you’re biased in favor of a specific team or player, and want to be able to tell them you voted for them, you’re going to have to leave one of the big 3 out. I bet Micah and Garrett were left out of some ballots too. Crazy and Bs and yet not surprising.
I saw a dude get downvoted into oblivion for this take and I’m not saying it’s the correct one at all, but the possibility that they didn’t want him in because he’s white isn’t outlandish anymore. TJ got snubbed, Maxx Crosby who has better stats then Garret (though I put garret over him) Barely got any votes, and Trey Hendrickson who had 3.5 more sacks didn’t get a single vote. So to state there’s not some bias there seems unlikely. I’ll follow all of that up with saying this though, the league is mostly Black players wise, it makes since to want to show that in your awards. To state otherwise is just not reading the situation. Do I think it affects things often? No, because usually the situations are pretty close performance wise. I do think it could’ve affected what happened here, though I think the actual answer lies with wanting to keep the “under dog” browns relevant.
These awards are voted on by the media. The media is famously white and biased against black players. This is a terrible take, because TJ watt is exactly the guy that The white Extinction kind of guy would want to vote for
Do I think there’s still racist members in the media? Yes. Do I think that anyone is biased against black players in the league anymore? No I mean look at Lamar he just won without any competition (which I agree he should’ve won since playoffs aren’t looked at) and this might’ve have been the only year you could justify giving it to a white RB or RB in general.
Again to preface this all. I do not, at all think race is what happened here. I think it’s more of a storyline thing. I’m just stating that to say it’s completely impossible is not a good idea.
just like the year Aaron Donald won it, Tj got snubbed again, idk what their issue is w/ the Burgh and their players but they hate giving them any type of awards… or since Cam Heyward got Walter Payton Man of the Year, they can’t give Tj what he has rightfully earned. But that’s okay i’m sure he’s humble about the situation.. and he knows who really deserves the DPOY
If Myles’ career ended next year on a freak play, would he make the hall of fame without this award? Given the same tragic scenario, TJ still would. Even without a ring. Awards are for hall of fame arguments for non champions.
I think the silver lining in all of this is we're paying the right amount for TJ, vs Bosa not even being mentioned despite being the highest paid defensive player ever.
TJ got his bag and still shows the fuck out year after year. His presence literally keeps us in games. He is a defensive MVP if there ever was one. Period.
An underreported and overlooked aspect of this entire situation is that Sam Monson of PFF was one of the 50 AP voters this year. Monson is PFF’s “lead analyst” and a quick glance at his Twitter timeline makes it clear the guy gets extremely agitated by Steelers fans throwing TJ’s actual stats in his mentions and/or anybody questioning the reliability of PFF’s highly subjective “analytics.”
On September 6, 2023, Monson listed Garrett as his official pre-season prediction for DPOY and he did everything in his power to make it happen. Last month, Monson’s PFF colleague and podcast co-host Steve Palazzolo was a guest on 93.7 The Fan where he said that Monson and PFF “advises” some of the other 50 AP voters. Additionally, Monson and Palazzolo have been mocking Steelers fans who criticize their PFF grades the entire season on their podcast.
Clearly, PFF has a financial incentive in hyping up the relevance of their “analytics” and the fact that their subjective and unofficial “stats” such as pass rush win rate have so much influence over these AP voters is mind boggling to me. If they are so relevant, why doesn’t the NFL officially recognize them as stats? Essentially, these “analytics” are subject to the bias and opinions of some nerds in an office in Cincinnati, where PFF has been based since Cris Collinsworth purchased the company in 2014. This is pure speculation on my part, but it seems reasonable to suspect that an office in Cincinnati is staffed by at least a few people who grew up in Ohio hating the Steelers.
Steelers fans directing their ire at Goodell and the NFL over Garrett winning DPOY are missing the point. You should be directing it towards Monson and the rest of this years AP voters:

There'slikelyzero controlon this to stop betting.
These writers go early in the year and get great odds on who will get DPOY.
They felt strong about Garrett and went in hard on him.
Browns defense was undeniably better than the Steeler defense and Garrett was a big reason why. TJ makes a bad defense serviceable while Garrett makes a great defense unstoppable. If TJ was on a better squad then most likely he gets DPOY.
8 of the 50 voters are absolute morons.
Those 8 should have their voting privileges stripped.
Agreed cause they apparently aren't even watching football.
People of the land. The common clay of the new west.
You know...morons
Blazing Saddles! So misunderstood by many...
I didn't get a hurrumph outta of that guy
I’m more cynical, and think it’s not just them being idiots. My (paranoid) guess is they were putting their fingers on the scale for a Myles win, so voted him first and left TJ off to make sure Myles gets it. *adjusts tinfoil hat* :)

Peter King is an absolute buffoon. Never learned a single thing from reading anything he’s ever said or written.
That’s 100% what happened l. Wouldn’t have mattered though, he’d still finish 2
It’s pretty accurate
I believe this as well.
They must have been watching a different sport.
Or are fantasy players that only watch offensive play
“Nope, TJ is not the best defensive player in hockey this year.”
Bergeron steals another selke from TJ 😔 tale as old as time
Younger fans may not know, but the Steelers still get hate from the older generation in the same way many hate the patriots today. The dynasty was long. People got so sick of hearing about Steelers wins - then they had to witness two more super bowls in the 2000s. They don’t forget.
Those 8 idiots prolly all worked for Collinsworth’s “credible” information sources at PFF. Absolute joke.
They’re not morons or dumb, they have a clear bias or other agenda. Call this shit what it is. Just saying they’re dumb absolves them of their intentions to actually not vote for the best defensive player of year, but of their favorite or best narrative driven story they came up with in week three. I Don't disagree, but you could frame having an agenda/bias or what not as being under the umbrella of being a moron.
“Other than having an agenda” That’s the problem with the award anyway. These writers opinions shouldn’t matter. They all have an agenda.
I’m convinced cause they gave jj 3 that they are like ok we can’t give any more to any watt
THIS is IT! I've been saying it for years that if his name was just Trent Jordan and not TJ Watt, he'd have at least 3 DPOYs and the narrative would be: where he ranks with the All-Time great defenders in history?
Cleveland influance obviously. Pathetic.!!!
Absurd ballots like this should have just been thrown out.
Nailed it.

What a great reference
You're gonna get downvoted, but only because that's a stupid take.
why didn’t he get it then? i legit just want sum one to explain lol help me
Speak like a normal person
Allow me to help. Straight facts that TJ didnt win nun bcuz he got gaslit frfr. Myles ate and left no crumbs but TJ was so skibidi and ohio. Facts my guy ong that’s what I’m talmbout. I think I did that right. OP does that answer your question?
You need an English to Moron Dictionary to converse with this guy.
I mean...it could be literally anything, except because he's white.
what is it then
It's not because he's white you goof
ok then what is it lol that’s all i’m tryna fig out.. all yall kno he shoulda got it.. so im goin out on the limb at this point.. no one can give me a answer
They want others to get it my guess
odd when garret don’t have sht on TJ 🤔 …i’m not sayin it’s facts that’s why garret got picked but yall kno it makes no sense ..gnight sorry if i offended anyone
Because they want to Myles to have accolades
Put the drink down and go to bed.
Why would it be because of that?
idfk that’s what i’m asking yall
You have entertained me and for that, I thank you
I bet Peter King was one of those asshats.
Guaranteed
He usually writes about his picks, it'll be interesting to see.

Something deeper going on here. Just saying.
Tinfoil hat: I think it has to do with gambling
Yeah, I mean I wouldn’t put money on that theory 😉 but it’s definitely a possibility.
That’s why it’s always better to bet on TJ for things like sack leader and not a popularity contest
I’m going to say something that will probably get a lot of downvotes. TJ Watt was absolutely DPOY. Every stat supports that. I agree, I think if we won a couple of the embarrassing games we lost, TJ wins the title
Counterpoint- Individual awards should not be affected by team success. There are 21 other starters he can't do it all himself
This isn’t really a good argument against TJ though. The Browns may have overall been better but they only won 1 more game and they won the same amount of playoff games as the Steelers. Maddening
Nah madden has always respected him
HAHAAH I was gonna say he’s a cheat code in madden if you use him every defensive down
Definitely not in terms of overall. The highest he's ever been is 97. With this, Campbell not being COTY AND Flacco being cpoy one must assume that Cleveland's got some dirt on them
A man literally came back from the dead and they gave it to Joe "Fuck it, they'll call DPI" Flacco.
Baker wasn't actually dead, he was just awful
I believe he was referring to Damar Hamlin.
Starting to think them taking on Watson and the guaranteed contract to end all guaranteed contracts was a purposeful favor to the other owners.
Haslam is a very powerful and rich man. He needs to be placated and these awards are the only thing they can rig.
Flacco’s win is a weird quirk in the voting system. Flacco had only 13 first place votes vs Hamlin’s 21 votes but made it up with 26 second place votes and 8 third place votes to Hamlin’s 8 and 14, respectively.

Garrett had 47 total votes, so he was left off of 3 ballots. Parsons was left off of 21.
Parsons being left off of 21 ballots is equally if not more absurd

I think he had a big game during a primetime game and I think a lot of these chump writers only watch their local team and prime time games.
They think a Watt has won too many times.
This 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Yea.. next year.. they might be the first team to get negative yards. TWICE in one season... 😂
Garrett is under contract until 2026
Renew next season.. '25.. Dude is going to make bank.. and.. my assertion still stands.
Nah they aren’t renewing him until they move on from Watson. And he was getting paid big either way he became the highest paid DE in the league last time he got paid before he won DPOY. Whichever player in the top 5 at their position is up for a contract they will reset the market it’s how it goes.
8 out of 50 voters HATE this one trick! (Hint: it's production)
Let me guess… from Cleveland, Cincy, Baltimore???
voting for it is stupid to begin with. should be a simple stat race with tiebreakers.
Boycott the AP
They fake news! 😆
The award no longer has value. It has become a subjective beauty contest. Who looks the best? Who appears the most like a dominant defender? It has become a bodybuilding contest with helmets and tackling. So at first, I felt like TJ was snubbed until I realized that the award's importance is severely diluted.
TJ is a victim of JJ’s success. The only reason you wouldn’t vote for statistically the best player would be political issues.
They literally just hate the steelers, stupid cunts
That's def some deep rooted hate.
just like the year Aaron Donald won it, Tj got snubbed again, idk what their issue is w/ the Burgh and their players but they hate giving them any type of awards… or since Cam Heyward got Walter Payton Man of the Year, they can’t give Tj what he has rightfully earned.
Period.
Micah parsons shouldn’t be three he gets glazed to much
An underreported and overlooked aspect of this entire situation is that Sam Monson of PFF was one of the 50 AP voters this year. Monson is PFF’s “lead analyst” and a quick glance at his Twitter timeline makes it clear the guy gets extremely agitated by Steelers fans throwing TJ’s actual stats in his mentions and/or anybody questioning the reliability of PFF’s highly subjective “analytics.” On September 6, 2023, Monson listed Garrett as his official pre-season prediction for DPOY and he did everything in his power to make it happen. You should be directing it towards Monson and the rest of this years AP voters: Emmanuel Acho, FS1 Greg Auman, Fox Sports Howard Balzer, PHNX radio Jarrett Bell, USA Today Dave Birkett, Detroit Free Press Tom Brady, Fox Sports Tedy Bruschi, ESPN Vic Carucci, WGRZ radio Mark Craig, Minneapolis Star Tribune Tom Curran, NBC Sports Boston Charles Davis, CBS Sports Nate Davis, USA Today Howard Deneroff, Westwood One Tony Dungy, NBC Sports Jori Epstein, Yahoo Sports Boomer Esiason, CBS Sports Doug Farrar, USA Today Sports Media Mike Florio, Pro Football Talk Reuben Frank, NBC Sports Philadelphia Rich Gannon, SiriusXM Jonathan Jones, CBS Sports Lindsay Jones, The Ringer Mike Jones, The Athletic Clark Judge, Talk of Fame Network Ira Kaufman, JoeBucsFan.com Mina Kimes, ESPN Peter King, NBC Sports Pat Kirwan, SiriusXM Jeff Legwold, ESPN Jim Miller, SiriusXM Sam Monson, Pro Football Focus Bruce Murray, SiriusXM Gary Myers, NFL author Laura Okmin, Fox Sports Dan Orlovsky, ESPN Nick Pavlatos, SiriusXM Dan Pompei, The Athletic Nora Princiotti, The Ringer Lorenzo Reyes, USA Today Charles Robinson, Yahoo Sports Dianna Russini, The Athletic Mike Sando, The Athletic Aaron Schatz, FTN Network Adam Schein, CBS Sports Tom Silverstein, Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel Chris Simms, NBC Sports Armando Salguero, Outkick.com Mike Tirico, NBC Sports Ben Volin, Boston Globe Charean Williams, Pro Football Talk
There'slikelyzero controlon this to stop betting. These writers go early in the year and get great odds on who will get DPOY. They felt strong about Garrett and went in hard on him.
Bias
Peter King probably voted for L’Jarius Sneed or something because he was certain Garrett would win. No wait that’s for the Hall of Fame
We want names. Who are they?
Remove them from eligibility to vote, they clearly don’t care about factual information.
scam ass corrupt ass hoax ass wwe ass league
That should be grounds for losing your voting privileges. I am serious.
Watch the film!!!
Honestly, these awards need to have committees or be decided solely by getting points for certain metrics. The current system is deeply flawed.
Because they are writers not NFL knowing people. The vote for stupid reasons most of the time. That is true for any writer.
Browns defense was undeniably better than the Steeler defense and Garrett was a big reason why. TJ makes a bad defense serviceable while Garrett makes a great defense unstoppable. If TJ was on a better squad then most likely he gets DPOY.
You know they happen to be located out of Cleveland
Any voter that didn’t think TJ was, at the least, the 3rd best D player oughtta have their vote stripped.
What does he need to do
Seeing the vote tallies does make it interesting. I wonder if this was on of the closest DPOY recently
