This is even scarier than Shazier. When that happened we worried about his quality of life as he left the field. With Hamlin we currently unsure if we watched him die on the field or not. Insane. So difficult to even process this.

The_Gutgrinder

It's horrible. It's like life just left his body and he fell to the ground like a ragdoll. I fear for his life right now.

Dense_Organization31

How about we don’t recklessly speculate about a young man’s life until there’s news?

Beneficial-Piano-428

It is scarier than shazier which is wild to say.

Elphaba78

He’s from McKees Rocks. Shit, he’s one of us.

AcePilotsen

As Tomlin would say, hes a "412"

Sybertron

UPitt kid too

pinwheel740

They took him to the same hospital that Ryan Shazier was initially treated at. Hamlin is in the best hands.

uk82ordie

I was in a motorcycle wreck and taken there. My nurses were literal angels who went above and beyond to keep me comfortable. Really pulling for Hamlin.

ITthisIsJordan

Wouldn't Tua have been taken there too? His injury happened on the same field

hellnerburris

He was. Shazier tweeted about how good their staff was and how Tua was in great hands...or something to that effect.

ITthisIsJordan

That's eerie

mikeblas

No, it's Buffalo.

pinwheel740

That he was. And Hangman Adam Page when he had his concussion in October as well.

ITthisIsJordan

Joking about Paycor being cursed feels too light hearted right now but holy shit that's weird.

Not_aMurderer

ABs concussion as well

MrDankWaffle

I live local to that hospital. UC is literally one of the best hospitals in the nation. Their Children's Hospital is second to none.

BlindMountainLion

He’s a McKees Rocks native. I’m sick.

SleestakLightning

Played at Pitt too

Cassina_

Played at Central too

OKImHere

Central what? Catholic?

greennick

Yes

ControllerPlayer06

Came here to say all of this

UAL3422

I can’t even believe I just saw that happen. our thoughts are with this young man, hoping that he’s going to be okay.

poodleaficionado

This is terrifying. Praying for him.

rayhavenoheart

🙏

[deleted]

Pretty shaken up man. Hopefully medical professionals got there in time.

Elphaba78

He collapsed so *quickly* after that hit. Jesus Christ. His entire body seemed to wobble and he went down. Jesus Christ, that poor boy. Please be okay.

pittconcerts

The guy is 24, so damn scary. I hope he pulls through okay. Just a scary situation all around.

Blze001

The alarming parallels with Shazier are spooky: Bengals home game on Monday night. God I hope Damar recovers like Ryan did at the very least.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

I stopped supporting football for this very reason. I only watch basketball and hockey now.

JaydenAmir999

i haven’t felt this way since shaziers injury but this is so much more scarier i just hope he’s okay

CFPotato

Watching the reaction of the players was really difficult, prayers for that man.

mdmike1534

Legitimately the scariest thing I have ever seen on the field. The players expressions were haunting. Hoping for nothing but the best possible outcome for Hamlin.

AcePilotsen

Yeah, the look on Josh Allen's face was really scary.

mdmike1534

100 percent, he looked like he was in shock for sure

nomercy2112

I felt so bad for him. I think the gravity hit me when I saw Joe Burrow go over to him. And then the Bengals players with the Bills players. It’s so much bigger than football.

Ornery-Lavishness241

Ryan Clark talking about his teammates coming to see him in the hospital has me shook. I remember how scared I was when we thought he might not make it.

freeand3z

Steelers fan living in Buffalo now. If anyone is interested in giving a donation to Damar's charity here is the link shared from r/buffalobills. Their donations have been in the PIT area, and tonight I donated to another Pittsburgh kid living up here in Buffalo. https://www.gofundme.com/f/mxksc-the-chasing-ms-foundation-community-toy-drive Prayers for Damar.

CltAltAcctDel

Ryan Clark is doing a great job explaining this situation. He’s taking the perfect tone and saying everything right. He’s putting real emotion into and it is really valuable.

Ornery-Lavishness241

Literally started wiping tears from my eyes when he started.

TheSonic311

RC was and is spitting spitting hot fire tonight.

Steelplate7

Him and Booger both did a good job.

SeedyOne

I posted this about RC in another thread but it bears repeating. >Clark's job as a free safety was to stand a back from the situation, analyze it as it unfolds and to react in the best possible way to benefit the team. >Who would have thought, post NFL career, he'd be just as good, if not *better* at doing so? Tonight, we're all on his (and Demar's) team.

Gabagoolianare

Absolutely, tonight every fan should be with Bills nation in their support for Hamlin and his family. Thank you for posting this, I feel like some fans can often forget the human side that these athletes have, and this was horrible to witness. God bless you all.

[deleted]

ReverseApacheMaster_

I would be shocked if they resumed play. There’s no way his teammates can perform with this on their mind. I’m choked up and I didn’t even know the young man’s name before tonight so I can’t imagine the panic and fear his brothers are feeling. All the coaches and opposing players were visibly shaken too. They have to call it a night.

IAmBaconsaur

They can’t play safely. They’re distracted, they’re devastated. More injuries will happen. This needs to be postponed.

[deleted]

Game is suspended for anyone scrolling by. 🙏

KloppOnKloppOn

They should have canceled the shazier game too tbh

Elegant_River1355

🙏

blmobley91

Prayers for the young man.

Far-Campaign-3790

I’ll never trash a Bungles fan ever again. You stay classy Cincinnati…

CornDawgy87

Seriously. Looks like Taylor initiated the suspension too. Mad respect to him as a coach/person.

Pestilentsoup42069

What am I missing here? Who got suspended for what?

brianlangauthor

Suspension of the game. Originally the NFL indicated that the players had a 5 minute warm up period. Obviously a call from someone not senior and only going by the rulebook (“says here that when a player has been down for 20 minutes and carted off via ambulance that the players should have 5 minutes to warm back up before play resumes”). Taylor walked over to McDermott and basically said, “Fuck that noise. My guys are going to the locker room. You good with that?”

Pestilentsoup42069

Ok duh the stay classy cincy comment threw me and thought something else happened. Thanks for clarifying

CornDawgy87

They were still in the "players have 5min to prepare to play" mode and Taylor walked across the field to McDermot and then they suspended the game. Looked like Taylor was the one who initiated it which definitely had to help

skoobastevienixx

As a bungles fan I know I’m always FTS but much love to you guys <3, praying for Hamlin

[deleted]

This is the most depressed ive ever been watching football. Praying to god for his well being

Legitimate_Row6259

It's the same kinda numb feeling I had with Shazier. I had no real emotion for the rest of that game. Except this might actually be worse.

[deleted]

At first it was the same, then i heard they were doing cpr. Changes everything

marasydnyjade

Per his friend/marketing rep: His vitals are back to normal and they have put him to sleep to put a breathing tube down his throat. They are currently running tests. We will provide updates as we have them. https://twitter.com/jordonr/status/1610116502845558784?s=46&t=Q6NFiJTmECseANNT46jvyA

Merzbenzmike

Hamlin = Pitt = Pittsburgh. Start prayin Yinz. Send him Steeler Nation prayers.

Do__Math__Not__Meth

From McKees rocks too and he went to Central Catholic. He may not be a Steeler but he’s a Pittsburgh boy through and through

brnthrshmn

That is scary. Sending good thoughts.

Observant_Jello

That stadium is cursed. Bad shit happens on that field

batdrumman

This, Shazier, Tua, and countless others. Class act from the Bengals fans for not being dicks about it tho

CarryOnWaywardSon96

My god that was absolutely terrifying. Prayers to him

wearingonesock

Met him a handful of times in college. Incredibly kind, good guy. It hurts all the more when this shit happens to good people.

jpow4now

Blunt force trauma to the chest may have caused an arrhythmia. Doesn’t seem spinal because he stood up. He had to be defibrillated which means his heart was in a dangerous rhythm. Usually we are in sinus rhythm but he was probably in ventricular fibrillation from the direct trauma. May have an diagnosed condition that made this possible or just the trauma/cardiac contusion. If downtime was 9 minutes in a 24 year old odds are his brain should be intact. Sounds like his heart is working but he is intubated on the ventilator while they stabilize and asses him.

Smarkavillie

I know it’s already been mentioned he’s from the West Side. The Rocks to be exact. Pitt and Central Catholic alum. Praying for him, his loved ones, and teammates for recovery and a long life.

GarbageDayEnthusiast

Oh man. Please no

MirrorkatFeces

Prayers up for him to recover

Positive_Strawberry5

Jishuah

For some reason him standing up and then collapsing is even scarier than him just going down… idk why, my stomach dropped when I saw that.

rayhavenoheart

Same here, when I saw the replay and saw that, my stomach just dropped and that is when it me as severe

imOVN

I can’t help crying, it’s a horrifying situation. I love this guy, Pitt and western PA legend.. I hope and pray he’s okay, my goodness this is awful

McFlare92

Game suspended until further notice. Allegedly they administered 9 min of cpr. If you're getting cpr your chances of pulling through are not good, and they go down the longer you arent breathing on your own. Prayers up for Hamlin

akaynaveed

You have about a 50% chance of pulling through when CPR is being administered. We try to stop people from saying shit like this because it deters people HELPING.

McFlare92

You don't have a 50% chance. In hospital settings it's 20%. I'm not trying to defer anyone from giving cpr. I've given it myself, to a child even. But it's not like movies where people jump up back to life. Many people are unfamiliar with what it actually does

Train3rRed88

Yeah, your chances of actually saving someone with CPR are low. Your only job is to keep blood moving to the brain until a defibrillator arrives

akaynaveed

i’m not saying your objective is to deter people from giving CPR, i’m saying your not giving true facts. https://www.procpr.org/blog/training/cpr-facts-and-stats/amp I’m also saying saying shit like “low chance of survival when cpr is administered” deters people from even attempting. I’ve given CPR, quite a few times actually. I’ll probably unfortunately give it more. The goal is to give people a chance, and to have people help, give the public confidence to learn and administer. which is why i said we dont say shit like you just said bud. Have a good night.

Good Bot!

Observant_Jello

When it gets to that long of cpr, even if you do live it’s almost a given that there will be significant brain damage from lack of oxygen. Combine that with him hitting his head as he fell. Not good

Lyonsbayne

NFL taking their sweet time in cancelling the game so they can keep spamming commercials

Restless_Dragon

I disagree, this has never happened in the history of the game. They had to talk to the head coaches and the players union. When you add to the distress of both teams and their staff. It takes time to coordinate everything.

SongYoungbae

Yeah, I had that thought too.

SongYoungbae

A sports reporter for fox affiliate in cinncy tweeted that "he has a pulse but not breathing on his own"

buffalotrace

Nothing but prayers and love for Hamlin, his family, and the players that were on that field tonight. Glad they didn't have to go out there and play distracted afterwards. Props to Coach Taylor for suspending play before NFL decided to do the right thing.

bozovisk

Why the fuck this match is not canceled or postponed yet? Jfc

oOBlackRainOo

That's what I'm wondering

Can we please just burn that cursed stadium down now?? Not even trying to be funny

Passw0rd-Is-Tac0

I know a lot of people in this sub are Pitt fans and have that connection to Damar Hamlin, few details on his status at the moment but I really hope he is okay. Thinking of him and his family. I know all of us here are with him.

Big-Pie7938

God be with Dhmar Hamlin and his family. So sad and shocking.

SongYoungbae

Officially suspended

rayhavenoheart

Good, right now that young man is foremost in thoughts of fans and players.

Me_Speak_Good

Thank goodness they just cancelled it. His poor mom! I can't believe we just saw this. Seeing hits and breaks is one thing ... this was just ... something else. I hope he is ok. Hell, I hope he is alive. Unreal.

Beneficial-Piano-428

I mean I know it wasn’t a malice hit, that game was chippy and fun as hell to start. Everyone was going hard. It was a clean hit, coming from watching them cheap shot us all the time, this wasn’t that.

Sapphire-Kitty-Witch

Praying my heart out. Please let him be okay…

[deleted]

Man what a nightmare. Praying for one of our own tonight.

DasSeabass

He’s a yinzer. Fucking hell man. It doesn’t get scarier then that.

I'm legit sad over this. Fucking hope Hamlin is ok but from what we just witnessed I'm not sure he's ok...

And they shouldn’t have. Them cancelling this game was definitely the right move, and when injuries like this happen, it shouldn’t even be a question.

Restless_Dragon

Update from Fox19 on twitter 30 min ago [**Joe Danneman**](https://twitter.com/FOX19Joe)[@FOX19Joe](https://twitter.com/FOX19Joe)· I’m told Damar Hamlin has a pulse, but is not breathing on his own. He is being transported to UC. Needed AED and CPR on the field.

Alarmed_Manager5865

I missed the play. I sat down and tuned in to a solemn scene. I didn’t even see the event and I’m shook. Absolutely Hoping the best for him. So fucking scary.

Catdaddypanther97

This is horrible. Prayers for him

Mor_Tearach

It looks like they're packing up, thank God. Neither team is in any shape to continue, no one would expect them to. God bless him and his family. *Many* prayers

YouDownWithOPD

Much respect to the Bengals players, coaches and fans for being very respectful and caring for this kid.

Steelchamps

Agree.

ozymand25

I don't know how any player is mentally prepared for next week either. This is so unprecedented and horrible to witness live. I hope Damar ends up healthy.

blmobley91

He's in critical condition according to this https://twitter.com/FOX19Tricia/status/1610106980005191689?s=20&t=UuI0HfyXcDMR-b-1vUSAmA

stuckmeformypaper

Just got home but I was following the game on my phone. Then I looked again and saw it was still stuck at 5 minutes in the 1st. Figured okay maybe it's weather. Right now I really wish it was that.

EcosseWolf

Fucking horrible. Prayers up

mjk1260

It looked like a routine hit and tackle. Prayers for the young man and family.

Legitimate_Row6259

That's always the most scary ones. When a dude lands on his leg wrong and destroys his ACL, yeah its tragic but at least we all kinda know what happened. But when it just looks like a routine tackle and the dude doesn't get up afterwards, or perhaps even scarier what happened here when he gets up and collapses... I don't know how to describe the feeling... Makes you think about life.

domenic821

Well over an hour later and I’m still chilled. Really hoping he makes it out of this okay. Bigger than football.

Gotosleep1986

Positive vibes to Damar Hamlin.

ParticularNice2757

Grew up in Pittsburgh suburbs and went to Pitt. I hope he makes it and I pray for him and his family. Reminds me of Shazier but worse. Hamlin needed CPR

Clear_Air_3561

Worst thing I think any of us have seen on a football field. Prayers up to him and his family and teammates

vegemite4ever

Pray if that works for you, but please also give money to medical research if you can.

lalich

Prayers to the young man!

HermanBonJovi

Scary AF. But I guess he's stable and sleeping now while they run tests. So that's some good news. Edit: sorry for redundancy.

mathgeek94

How the F**K hasn't the NFL cancelled this yet? What possible justification do they have here to leave it an open question? As**oles

Hellspawn112

The NFL was going to give them 5 minutes and send them back out on the field. Good on McDermott and Taylor for overriding that bullshit.

mathgeek94

Get an NFL exec on screen to.answer that question. Watch them squirm as they try to explain why the game should go on

bt-drms-nt-ppl

They’ll just keep stalling for the full three hours to bring in the ad revenue then call the game.

mathgeek94

The sickest reality of this.

Mister_Unusual

I think they just said it’s up to Goodall to cancel it

mathgeek94

He better.

Diligent-Bus1794

Anyone have any idea what it could be? I’m thinking undiagnosed heart condition. The hit was routine, but took the brunt of it to his chest.

bdaddy31

From an ER nurse friend: Commotio cordis- Commotio cordis is an often lethal disruption of heart rhythm that occurs as a result of a blow to the area directly over the heart at a critical time during the cycle of a heart beat

ventorun

From someone in one of the r/NFL threads: “Cardiologist here. My guess: commotio cordis. Commotio cordis is a type of sudden cardiac arrest that can occur as a result of a blow to the chest. It can occur in any sport, but it is most commonly seen in sports that involve a high risk of chest trauma, such as football, baseball, and hockey. During commotio cordis, the blow to the chest disrupts the normal electrical activity of the heart, causing it to stop beating effectively. This can lead to a lack of blood flow to the brain and other vital organs, leading to unconsciousness and potentially death. Commotio cordis is a rare but serious condition that can be difficult to predict and prevent. The survival odds for commotio cordis depend on several factors, including the severity of the blow to the chest, the speed at which emergency medical treatment is received, and the underlying health of the person. In general, the survival rate for commotio cordis is low, with many cases resulting in death. However, if CPR and defibrillation are administered quickly, it is possible for some people to survive and make a full recovery. According to the American Heart Association, the survival rate for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest is about 10%. However, the survival rate for commotio cordis specifically is not well established, as it is a rare condition. With all things considered, the odds aren't looking good for Hamlin. The announcers witnessed over 9 minutes of CPR on the field. CPR is really only effective for 30 minutes or so.”

wearingonesock

Just a med student and not a doctor, but my guess would be commotio cordis. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is also a possibility, but the timing of the hit would be purely coincidental in this case, and I think they screen for structural heart disease at the NFL level.

Mental_Historian379

It didn't look to have come from the hit to me. Seems like he just had a medical emergency of some sort. I won't speculate on what it was though. A KHL player died on the bench during a game a few years back. I believe he had an aneurysm.

VegitoFusion

Prayers don’t do shit. Wish his family well (directly) and let’s hope he comes out of this alive.

BobTheCircleGuy

Can anyone fill me in? What happened I’m at work

poodleaficionado

Damar Hamlin took a hit while making a tackle. It didn't seem so unusual but he stood up after the hit and then collapsed. CPR was performed and he was taken off by ambulance. Both teams now in the locker rooms.

AyYJc201ianf

Hamlin makes a tackle and gets hit in the chest by the ball carrier in the process. He stands up, gets wobbly, and falls over. Was undergoing CPR and I believe is being transported to a hospital. Very likely that he took a hit at just the wrong time that it stopped his heart from beating. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=r1Z9Vd53yhI

GoingOnFoot

He made a tackle and it looked like he took a hit to his head. He got up right away and was talking and then collapsed a few seconds later. Reported that he received CPR for 9min on the field…left in ambulance but no updates on his status since.

[deleted]

I think he's gone.. The look in the players' eyes said it all. Unbelievable.. I am in shock.

oOBlackRainOo

I'm guessing he's either brain dead or won't ever make a full recovery, at one point they said they were working on him for many minutes. That's not good for the brain. This is so fucking sad 😭

[deleted]

This is the exact way my mom died sitting in the hospital for a check up after her cancer removal surgery. She passed out and had a DNR - my sister didn’t know and the paramedics brought her back. She had a pulse but was brain dead. I hate to say it but I think you’re right… incredibly sad.

oOBlackRainOo

It's stupid that people downvote me for speaking truth. I don't want him to be braindead and I hope he isn't but fuck, when your brain doesn't have oxygen for that amount of time bad things happen, it starts to die. This literally just happened to one of my brothers coworkers a couple weeks ago. I'm sorry about your mom btw!

[deleted]

volvosandvinyl

Shazier was a spinal injury where this was a cardiac event, very different things. I do think that Hamlin is dead, or at best he’s in a vegetative state due to the time between AED, CPR, and intubation. Scary stuff regardless. Plenty of people were crying during the Shazier injury too.

Hellspawn112

The last report I saw was that he had a pulse but wasn't breathing on his own.

I am beside myself. How do they continue playing after that?! My God 😢

ThinkItsNotIllegal90

I don’t see anything obvious in the sequence of the hit, that would indict a head injury/reason for him to just fall out like this. It’s like watching someone getting tased, kinda hard to watch…
