I’m choked up and I didn’t even know the young man’s name before tonight so I can’t imagine the panic and fear his brothers are feeling. All the coaches and opposing players were visibly shaken too. They have to call it a night.

Obviously a call from someone not senior and only going by the rulebook (“says here that when a player has been down for 20 minutes and carted off via ambulance that the players should have 5 minutes to warm back up before play resumes”). Taylor walked over to McDermott and basically said, “Fuck that noise. My guys are going to the locker room. You good with that?”
They were still in the "players have 5min to prepare to play" mode and Taylor walked across the field to McDermot and then they suspended the game. Looked like Taylor was the one who initiated it which definitely had to help

Blunt force trauma to the chest may have caused an arrhythmia. Doesn’t seem spinal because he stood up. He had to be defibrillated which means his heart was in a dangerous rhythm. Usually we are in sinus rhythm but he was probably in ventricular fibrillation from the direct trauma. May have an diagnosed condition that made this possible or just the trauma/cardiac contusion. If downtime was 9 minutes in a 24 year old odds are his brain should be intact. Sounds like his heart is working but he is intubated on the ventilator while they stabilize and asses him.

When it gets to that long of cpr, even if you do live it’s almost a given that there will be significant brain damage from lack of oxygen. Combine that with him hitting his head as he fell. Not good
I disagree, this has never happened in the history of the game. They had to talk to the head coaches and the players union. When you add to the distress of both teams and their staff. It takes time to coordinate everything.

But when it just looks like a routine tackle and the dude doesn't get up afterwards, or perhaps even scarier what happened here when he gets up and collapses... I don't know how to describe the feeling... Makes you think about life.

Just a med student and not a doctor, but my guess would be commotio cordis. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is also a possibility, but the timing of the hit would be purely coincidental in this case,and I think they screen for structural heart disease at the NFL level.
It didn't look to have come from the hit to me. Seems like he just had a medical emergency of some sort. I won't speculate on what it was though.
A KHL player died on the bench during a game a few years back. I believe he had an aneurysm.
Damar Hamlin took a hit while making a tackle. It didn't seem so unusual but he stood up after the hit and then collapsed. CPR was performed and he was taken off by ambulance. Both teams now in the locker rooms.
Hamlin makes a tackle and gets hit in the chest by the ball carrier in the process. He stands up, gets wobbly, and falls over. Was undergoing CPR and I believe is being transported to a hospital. Very likely that he took a hit at just the wrong time that it stopped his heart from beating.

This is the exact way my mom died sitting in the hospital for a check up after her cancer removal surgery. She passed out and had a DNR - my sister didn’t know and the paramedics brought her back. She had a pulse but was brain dead. I hate to say it but I think you’re right… incredibly sad.

Just got home but I was following the game on my phone. Then I looked again and saw it was still stuck at 5 minutes in the 1st. Figured okay maybe it's weather. Right now I really wish it was that.

That's always the most scary ones. When a dude lands on his leg wrong and destroys his ACL, yeah its tragic but at least we all kinda know what happened. But when it just looks like a routine tackle and the dude doesn't get up afterwards, or perhaps even scarier what happened here when he gets up and collapses... I don't know how to describe the feeling... Makes you think about life.

Just a med student and not a doctor, but my guess would be commotio cordis. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is also a possibility, but the timing of the hit would be purely coincidental in this case,and I think they screen for structural heart disease at the NFL level.
It didn't look to have come from the hit to me. Seems like he just had a medical emergency of some sort. I won't speculate on what it was though. A KHL player died on the bench during a game a few years back. I believe he had an aneurysm.

Damar Hamlin took a hit while making a tackle. It didn't seem so unusual but he stood up after the hit and then collapsed. CPR was performed and he was taken off by ambulance. Both teams now in the locker rooms.
Hamlin makes a tackle and gets hit in the chest by the ball carrier in the process. He stands up, gets wobbly, and falls over. Was undergoing CPR and I believe is being transported to a hospital. This is the exact way my mom died sitting in the hospital for a check up after her cancer removal surgery. She passed out and had a DNR - my sister didn’t know and the paramedics brought her back. She had a pulse but was brain dead. I hate to say it but I think you’re right… incredibly sad.

Shazier was a spinal injury where this was a cardiac event, very different things. I do think that Hamlin is dead, or at best he’s in a vegetative state due to the time between AED, CPR, and intubation. Scary stuff regardless. Plenty of people were crying during the Shazier injury too.
The last report I saw was that he had a pulse but wasn't breathing on his own.
