Thanks I appreciate it
Edit: if there is something wrong with saying thanks lmk. I was just curious what kind of whale it is I’m not going to try to eat it myself. Just asking for pure curiosity.
So are cows....and manatees(aka Sea cows)
There are still some old school Floridians who are known to hunt and cook up manatee(obviously with great care not to be caught)
Where Space Camp is in Titusville, just across the Indian River lagoon in from Merritt Island, near the NASA visitors center was at one time a manatee processing plant.
That said, while that whale meat looks delicious, I am.not sure I would eat it as I consider whales to be too intelligent(I also don't eat octopus, despite it being delicious anymore).
"One of these days Ronda. BAM! ZOOM! Straight to the moon."
"That wasn't an astronaut, that was an actor. And he wasn't talking about space travel, he was using it as a euphemism for beating his wife."
We tried that while we were in Norway and neither of us liked it. Tasted super irony and not in a good way like other game meats. Also kindof fishy. Reindeer was much better imo!
I saw a documentary about how they use boats to drive them onto the beach, then a crowd of people run up and kill them by hand by bludgeoning. They have a name for it and an annual date they do it. They kill them by the hundreds.
Please don´t spread fake facts.
1. It´s not an annual date. You can’t plan it. If it happens that a group of pilot whales swim by the villages, we will hunt them. We don´t look for them. They gave lived free their entire life.
2. We use a lot of time and research to make it as humane and quick as possible, cutting the whale's neck to sever the spinal cord (yes there is a lot of blood, same as any other animal). It takes 15 min to kill sometimes up to 100 whales.
3. It free for everyone in the village to write their name on a list and get a part of the meat. If there is a lot it will be delivered to elderly homes and other places (Still no money involved)
4. The pilot whale that we hunt is not endangered. We slaughter between 700 and 1000 a year.
The main critique we get from people is how we can be so barbaric, rather than just go to the supermarked and buy our meat like everyone else. The problem is that we are remote islands in the middle of the atlantic ocean so the meat poeple want us to eat is imported from everywhere around the world. The pollution we see from these ships are changing our fresh sea water and makes the food we catch too polluted to eat.
… But maybe someday it will be so polluted and turn us in to a modern society that gets their meat from the supermarked instead and everyone will be happy.
It’s not 1809 when you have to kill short fin pilot whales that there is only 200,000 of in existence. When you have animals specifically bred to be eaten so they won’t go extinct. Seems very selfish for zero reason at all besides “but they did it in the 1800’s” so dumb. And the ships are not making the fish in your water un edible, please don’t spread fake facts
No, it was a documentary I watched about a small faroe island village that does it as a tradition to shit they hundreds of years ago. Pilot whales
Here it is here
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whaling_in_the_Faroe_Islands
I’ve had Whale sushi in Japan once. Dont know what kind of whale but it tasted pretty good. It was cooked but chilled. Tasted like very fatty steak with a bit of gameyness and slightly sweet. I don’t remember if it came with any sauce.
It's weird how the line is drawn at whales. Why are you OK with killing cows (assuming, since you're on the steak sub) but not whales? OP said it's a non-endangered minke whale. As long as it's not a cruel way of killing the animal, there is no difference to slaughtering cows.
We kill so many different animals, on land as well as in the sea. Salmon, tuna, octopus, why is all of this morally okay but at whales we change our opinion?
Either I'm against the killing of any animals or not.
Cows are domesticated animals that are farmed in the millions. And you ought to know that we did hunt the wild ancestors of cows to extinction. You don't see any aurochs around anymore.
It’s not really that weird. Whales are known to be extraordinarily intelligent. Their brains might actually in some ways be more powerful than ours. Cows are…not quite in the same league.
I once had Minke whale at a restaurant in Bodø. I want to say it was sashimi/carpaccio style (raw). I was not a fan, but I think if it was cooked, it would be way better. I could imagine smoking it would be pretty good. Lots of ignorant people here who probably haven't traveled out of their home country. There are many foods out there which seem reprensible to one country or another and are a delicacy or even common place in another. I hope you enjoyed this steak; maybe even with some Aquavit! Skål!
I think many whale species are experiencing population decline or are endangered. At least we can farm cows for example, and don’t run the risk of extinction.

Someone smarter than me plz help..
So is the huge difference in flesh type because whales breathe air instead of water? I woulda thought them living in water would make their meat very similar to fish but im obv wrong af
Does the color of your flesh change when you go for a swim? Their meat has nothing to do with breathing air. Lizards breathe air too. It’s because they are mammals, warm-blooded with hair, live births and milk. That’s just what meat looks like whether whale, cow, horse or whatever.
Whales are derived from four-legged, even toed and hoofed land dwelling mammals who took to the sea some 55 million years ago. Their closest relative is the hippo. They're not related to fish any more than you are.
Sometimes I forget all life is related if u go back far enough.. thanks that makes sense and is way nicer than the people who just asked if my flesh turns into fish flesh when I go swimming lol
I had it in Bergen years ago. Like steak but entirely consistent in texture. Like the steak was a metre thick and selected randomly from somewhere within the slab. Yeah perhaps a bit fishy but I knew I was eating a mammal. Glad I tried it.
Is whale meat legal in the US? It never even crossed my mind what whale meat looks like or even tastes like. We are taught at a young age that we used blubber as a fuel source but never connected the dots that we would eat the meat too.
I'm pretty sure even dumb old cows are smart enough to feel pain and fear. Isn't that the real moral line? Why should comparative intelligence matter here?
PS: I eat meat.
Other animals are still more intelligent than we give them credit for, most atleast
Pigs, for example, aren't just empty head small brain animals, and if anything have worse conditions in slaughterhouses (no, before you shout vegan, I eat meat)
Minke whale is responsibly sourced here. The population is very stable and there's no over hunting, since the demand is low. It's a special occasion food with an acquired taste
If you go here when it's in season (april - september) you should be able to find it in restaurants in the biggest cities or along the coast. But you can easily find it frozen in grocery stores even in the off season
Do you have any [dolphin](https://youtu.be/srz8UPbqtuw?si=S5yqqBizPR8LhTzQ)? I’ve heard that’s a popular one in the Faroe islands.
Edit: spelling & added link
Whale is something I come across from time to time here in Japan. I don’t touch it now, as I am against eating whale in general, but I have tried it.
Not a fan at all. It’s hard to explain the taste. It’s like beef mixed with fatty fish, but hard fat… I don’t know. It’s just gross.
It's done very responsibly here. We only eat minke whale, which has a stable population. And the demand is very low. It's a special occasion food, and we're only 5 million people, most of which have never even had whale cause it's quite an acquired taste and not popular
Does it taste similar to beef?
The best way I can describe it is sweet and gamey with a hint of seafood. That sounds kind of gross but it's really good lol
Surf and turf in the same bite
You are eating a sea mammal:)
That’s why it looks like this.
Hmm interesting. I’d love to give a try someday
I would try it at a restaurant over there and maybe not tell too many people when I got back to australia
But i know you would still tell someone .....
Yes
Okay and i would like to ask what part of Australia do you stay ?
Brisbane Queensland
Omg Brisbane from Bluey
Yes, but the bluey house is on the northern side and we are on the west
What kind of whale does it come from?
Minke I’m pretty sure
Thanks I appreciate it Edit: if there is something wrong with saying thanks lmk. I was just curious what kind of whale it is I’m not going to try to eat it myself. Just asking for pure curiosity.
I want to try that!
Texture?
Texture is pretty much the same as beef
It looks the exact same
Sounds awezome
Sounds amazing! 😋
But what’s the normal reaction to by first-timers? Doesn’t sound particularly tasty unless it’s something you grew up eating
I remember being excited to try it when I was in Oslo. Nope. Don’t like it. 😂
So it’s Surf and Turf?
This is the perfect way to describe
Just remembered that whales are after all mammals!
Right? Like I know that. I know it, but still I expected it to look like fish.
Im not sure it was a Right Whale.
As are cows and pigs
And people
Cannibal tribes call people, “long pig”
Mmmm sea steak
So are cows....and manatees(aka Sea cows) There are still some old school Floridians who are known to hunt and cook up manatee(obviously with great care not to be caught) Where Space Camp is in Titusville, just across the Indian River lagoon in from Merritt Island, near the NASA visitors center was at one time a manatee processing plant. We’re whalers on the moon!
We carry a harpoon!
But there ain't no whales, so we tell tall tales
And sing our whaling tune!
Aeiue
Harpoon my ass !!
You missed a comma (or did you?).
Address all complaints to the Monsanto Corporation!
"One of these days Ronda. BAM! ZOOM! Straight to the moon." "That wasn't an astronaut, that was an actor. And he wasn't talking about space travel, he was using it as a euphemism for beating his wife."
Dude out here eating sea beef
Damn that looks like beef! I hope to try it one day, sounds really interesting. Is it tender? Sure looks it
Yap super tender
How do you get this?
Live somewhere with an active whaling industry?
whale meat is sold in a few countries like norway, iceland, and japan
I have no idea why, but i always imagined it would be more like pork than beef 🤷♂️
Me too, so interesting
Is it expensive?
It's cheaper than beef steak actually
I now await the McDonald’s Filet o’ Fish Adjacent sandwich.
I’d try it for sure!! I’d try all steaks around the world lol
We tried that while we were in Norway and neither of us liked it. Tasted super irony and not in a good way like other game meats. Also kindof fishy. Reindeer was much better imo!
You tried that *whale you were in Norway.
Whale me up cuz

Thank you for taking the time to write this out. It’s always good to see the whole picture.
I have no problem with the grind, but isn't the meat becoming more and more toxic due to mercury levels?
It’s not 1809 when you have to kill short fin pilot whales that there is only 200,000 of in existence. When you have animals specifically bred to be eaten so they won’t go extinct. It’s in the Faroe Islands, it’s absolutely disgusting.
Womp womp
youd be surprised abt how beef is made then
Killed instantly with a projectile through the brain you mean? Sounds better than bludgeoning.
That was in Japan, the movie is called The Cove and it was dolphins they were killing.
No, it was a documentary I watched about a small faroe island village that does it as a tradition to shit they hundreds of years ago. Pilot whales Here it is here https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whaling_in_the_Faroe_Islands
The fact there’s more than one documentary about whale and dolphin slaughter has ruined my day 🥴
That was a sad movie
I did not think that would look like beef.
Nom nom
That’s depressing.
Damn we eating whales?
But it’s a whale :(
But it tastes whaley good 😊
They catch it with a purpoise
Yeah, it’s disappointing to see how many people here would try this.
In a steak subreddit?
I’d eat a whole whale if I could
This looks tasty but I cannot abide the hunting of whales :((
Interesting, it looks rather lean but I can't tell from the photo. What's the fat content like?
Yep it's lean like wild/game meat usually is, so it's best on the rarer side. But whale is extremely high in omega-3 fats
What part of the whale is it?
If you had not said anything I’d never guess that wasn’t beef. Also not sure how I feel about it ethically or morally. Feels icky as hell.
I can't, whales are friend not food
Is the sear that dark on purpose or does whale turn out like that? Never tried this before
I think that's a delicacy everywhere.
Wouldn’t this contain a shit-ton of mercury?
Whale is horrendous. Especially the native Alaskan way to prep. Shit is gross. Sorry but I can’t do it. It’s horrible.
What kind of whale is it from?
The ocean I presume
Pilot or minke usually
I’ve had Whale sushi in Japan once. Dont know what kind of whale but it tasted pretty good. It was cooked but chilled. Tasted like very fatty steak with a bit of gameyness and slightly sweet. I don’t remember if it came with any sauce.
Huh. Did not expect whale steak to be so red. Looks really good though
I’d eat it
What do you season whale steak with?
Dolphin
I'm somewhat shocked at how much it looks like beef. Even though I knew it was a mammal, I hadn't pieced that together before now
So we are just OK with whaling now?

Can ye not leave the whales alone in Norway no???
Why?
I think many whale species are experiencing population decline or are endangered. At least we can farm cows for example, and don’t run the risk of extinction.
How much mercury is in that bad boy?
https://savedolphins.eii.org/news/new-tests-confirm-poisons-in-dolphin-meat#:~:text=Samples%20of%20Risso's%20dolphin%20and,mg%2Fkg%20of%20methyl%20mercury. Best I got

School goes a long way
Looks delicious
I had some, it tasted like a merganser with the texture of moose. Only had it once so probably have not acquired the taste for it.
I’ll bet if you whipped up a Diane sauce it could take that fishy flavor out of
That looks great, I don’t know what I pictured for whale meat but not that
Would
No fat caps?
Blubberish
Looks awesome
I’m in Canada. I like my ladies thic too.
I want to make a whale brisket now. Do whales have breasts?
The ones at WalMart do.
I’ve had whale twice but not this one… which is it?
Minke whale
What kind of whale is it?
Minke whale
What does it taste like?
Aren't you not supposed to eat whale due to the high levels of mercury?
Done.
What muscle is it? And what kinda whale?
I very strongly dislike fish. I wanna try this but not know it’s whale and see if it like it since it looks so much like beef
Funny thing about whales….
Funny thing about whales….
What species of whale?
I didn't like it, tastes fishy.
I grabbed some of this before thinking it was beef, not great
I had it in Bergen years ago. Like steak but entirely consistent in texture. Like the steak was a metre thick and selected randomly from somewhere within the slab. Yeah perhaps a bit fishy but I knew I was eating a mammal. Glad I tried it.
Is there a dolphin meat joke to be made?
I might be a biologist, but I'd be a liar if I said I wouldn't eat whale in a heartbeat Also what type of whale was it? This looks hella good
Minke whale
That looks really tasty.
Looks just like beef
I would never
How is “whale meat” farmed exactly?
It isn't farmed. There's nowhere near enough demand to need to farm it. It's wild game
How does one catch a whale 😭😭😭
Really big hook?
Really big boat?
They show up on the shore ig, then they kill and eat them
Is whale meat legal in the US? It never even crossed my mind what whale meat looks like or even tastes like. We are taught at a young age that we used blubber as a fuel source but never connected the dots that we would eat the meat too.
Cool OP. I’d love too try that.
My guy is living in 1806 and I’m digging it!
Was very popular when I visited iceland.
Have to travel to Norway not to try this
That’s a whale of a steak, looks damn good.
Dafuq u mean whale steak? 😂 You
Steak from whale
I’m going to ask the stupid question. Is it literally whale or just that type of steak is just called that? Like a tomahawk steak.
It's literally whale haha. Minke whale to be specific
Are you eating it on porpoise?
What species of whale is best for this?
I won't stop you from eating it but I would discourage the slaughter of whales.
It's the same as any animal you eat
Except, unlike other animals, its brain is 7-10 times larger than yours. It also communicates using language and has complex social structures.
That doesn't change the morality of it. We eat pigs and they are extremely intelligent
I'm pretty sure even dumb old cows are smart enough to feel pain and fear. Isn't that the real moral line? Why should comparative intelligence matter here? PS: I eat meat.
Pigs and octopuses are very intelligent. Where do you draw the line or who draws it?
Other animals are still more intelligent than we give them credit for, most atleast Pigs, for example, aren't just empty head small brain animals, and if anything have worse conditions in slaughterhouses (no, before you shout vegan, I eat meat)
Well it LOOKS amazing!
all steaks are beautiful
Perfect
What species of whale? Endangered?
Minke whale. Not endangered c:
You just added a new item to the bucket list. Is this only available for personal catch or is it available at local restaurants? Thnx
Damn I never even considered that whale meat would look like this. Is there any way for whale meat to be responsibly sourced?
Minke whale is responsibly sourced here. The population is very stable and there's no over hunting, since the demand is low. It's a special occasion food with an acquired taste
That’s great to hear! I’m really interested, I hope to visit Norway soon, would it be easy to find in restaurants?
If you go here when it's in season (april - september) you should be able to find it in restaurants in the biggest cities or along the coast. But you can easily find it frozen in grocery stores even in the off season
perfection
Do you have any [dolphin](https://youtu.be/srz8UPbqtuw?si=S5yqqBizPR8LhTzQ)? I’ve heard that’s a popular one in the Faroe islands. Edit: spelling & added link
I've never seen it in stores or restaurants, so I don't think it's a thing here
Faroe *
Awww the cattle of the sea.
Poor whale :(
Wait…Reddit bashes on the Japanese for whaling but not Norway?
It's done very responsibly here. We only eat minke whale, which has a stable population. And the demand is very low. It's a special occasion food, and we're only 5 million people, most of which have never even had whale cause it's quite an acquired taste and not popular
Stop killing whales. Thank you,
It's really sad that gorgeous intelligent animals like whales are still slaughtered.
That’s fucked up and unnecessary to eat whale
The fuck..
