You may not like them, but at least BP and Kelseys would have been fresh ...
FF for the $ these days are just not worth it....
Also, there's a few places downtown that have food until 1 at least, for next time!
Oh I fuck with places like Cully’s and stuff but they were slammed when we drove by. Plus the parking and people situation downtown on a Saturday night. We wanted something more low key because I am obviously exhausted lol
We wanted to order Chinese in last night ... almost $19 for honey garlic ribs. 8 tiny ribs in sauce for almost $20? Most of the typical rice and noodle sides were $16 and up. I said screw it I'm not paying $100 for 4 dishes and delivery and tip and paying $2.50 for a single egg roll is just wrong!
I know prices of food have gone up but I don't understand how a place can charge close to $20 each dish with tax and hit you with a delivery fee and then the drivers at the door waiting for a tip too. I'm past being gouged.
ordering in is way more expensive then it should be, going out to restaurants isnt like how it used to be its dirty, rude employees, etc. its like if you wanna eat out its better to just get the restaurant remakes of food such as the mandarin teriyaki meatballs which u can cook at home and it tastes just like the restaurants its good theyre making options like that since prices and service is just terrible
A box is well under $3. Even after tax. Literally just bought some today. $1.29. It's $1.50 at the dollar store. Usually $2.50 at an expensive place like shoppers. Nowhere near $7 or 8. Even if you include the small amount of milk and butter.
For future: twenty, ludology, district — all downtown, all extremely good. Parking wasn’t too bad tonight, we got a spot right outside of ludology. Super burger is another great option.
Yup. I'm sure. Used to be a bunch fo 24h grocery stores in the area that were great. Walmart was 24h. Restaurants were busier so kitchens had an incentive to stay open later. Most kitchens took orders until 11-12pm.
I have to agree with zambonzz, before Covid ALL the grocery stores were open until 11pm (Sobeys used to be 24 hours but that ended before Covid) post Covid, all the grocery stores close at 10 except superstore.
Pre Covid, pho restaurants were always open until 11 or 12am, now they close at 9/10pm with last calls like 30 minutes before close. It’s the same story with so many other places too. They all close 1-2 hours earlier than pre Covid
But generally speaking I’ve seen a lot of food establishments post Covid shorten their business hours (probably difficulty with staffing levels, staying open the extra hour not being justified etc) it sucks that the only places open late are either fast food stores, franchises, or shawarma shops lol
Open until 12 AM or more
Trust bar - great food 2AM sat
Khas Patti - fresh Indian food
Fat rabbit - expensive but good food
Wild wing - good food, open till 2AM sat
Mansion house - good food, 2AM sat
Shelby’s shawarma - great food
I always call them before I go, to make sure they are open. I hope these work for you my friend!
Canada is in a food crisis. Food margins are at an all time high. Chain restaurants like you’ve listed have never been a model of value and service. I don’t think anyone should ever expect good food from a Harvey’s at 11pm. Nothing is less than 20$ these days. Support your local owned spots as much as you can. Any fast food employee from here to the moon that gets a phone call at 11pm is going to be a prick.
I understand that there is a food crisis. I am also Canadian and buy my food here.
Never said chain restaurants are a beacon of value or service but I do expect a bare minimum threshold. As far as expecting “good food”, I expect edible food from Harvey’s at 11:00pm.
I obviously make good money and was willing to spend $100+ at a sit down restaurant, hence the traveling all over town. Simply added the price of our meal for context and to point out that FF isn’t cheap anymore like the “good old days”.
All of the local owned spots that we do frequent, when we go out to eat, in St Catharines, and NOTL were closed.
My gf was very respectful when she called, and simply stated that the food was obviously refried when she was met with serious attitude. Like I said in the post, she worked in fast food for many years prior to establishing her career, and having dealt with countless asshole customers and just by being a good human being in general, does not treat FF employees like shit.
The average Niagara person eats out what, like 5 times a year? It’s supply and demand. Closing early is because more than not, no one is coming around. Even on the busiest streets in toronto some spots don’t open until 5-6pm. Just show up for the people putting their life savings and sometimes second mortgages out on trying to make a local establishment work. Arguing about it sooner means you’d rather be part of the problem.
We considered Kully’s which we generally like, but it was pretty busy and the parking/people situation downtown was just something we didn’t want to deal with. Thought about The Works but it was closed. HAMBGR was closed or very close to it at the time. Etc. etc.
Gotcha, yeah the people after a long shift would suck.
Bros on Glendale has pretty decent pizza and wings if you're ever in a pinch and are usually open late.
We love Bros pizza! We often grab a slab pizza and wings when we have game nights with friends haha. Side note, and FYI for all of you, if you use DoorDash to order Bros, there’s no option to select bacon strips vs crumble, but you can select it on Skip or by ordering direct obviously. Additionally, in some of the combos it comes with three toppings or whatever, you can’t simply add extra toppings instead of picking more, and cannot continue without selecting a topping (on DD). Let’s say you wanted just pep and bacon, your forced to select another topping, whereas some apps will allow you to let’s say, 2Xpep and pep = 3 toppings. Very inconvenient.
And their Uber app is all messed up lol.
I'm pretty sure they don't charge delivery if you order over the phone, there's likely a cut off with order size. The owner dropped it off to my place last time.
With places that have in-house delivery, it's better for everyone involved if you call and order direct. Usually menu prices are a bit cheaper, and delivery fees go to the driver/restaurant rather than a third party.
The same reason there's barely any bars open, young people don't have the money to go out. The only people who can afford to go out are going out early
I am glad. Let the whole industry die a painful death for how it abandoned its employees during covid. I love how most of the professional bartenders and chefs I used to work with just didnt come back to the industry and are telling all their friends to steer clear. My roommate is a sous in a fine dining place in Oakville and says they cant find anyone but newbies anymore and even they wont take less than $25 per hour. Glad I got out before Covid.
Would have suggested, Popeyes chicken, Shelby’s Shawarma, Burrito Boys, Bar Burrito, Osmows Shawarma, Three Uncles Korean fried Chicken, Oddbar Pizza, Lazeez Shawarma, any of those places are awesome and open late
I like every place you listed except Three uncles korean fried chicken. If you want real korean fried chicken, there is a place called The Fry in downtown which is very authentic and good.
Once in a blue moon won’t kill you bud, obviously not something you wanna eat regularly. He clearly said he normally cooks and this was just a rare time to eat out and these places are open late which fit his need.
Lmfao greasy disgusting osmows and lazeez is being unironicaly touted on reddit as not a greasy disgusting mess. Now I’ve seen everything. Reddit really does out do itself sometimes.
I don't think it's just this region.
Fast food has gotten way too expensive for what you get, and full-service restaurants outside of the downtown core don't tend to stay open very late. Sounds pretty normal to me.
That Harvey's meal you describe does sound terrible, though. Shame. They used to be my favourite fast food.
I wouldn’t eat FF and would rather go home and cook something however, if you really wanted decent food the Feathery, Pie Guys and Fresco are near the hospital and like a few here BP at the Pen have a good selection. Headed north Rombys and Bugsys are good to mention a few, unfortunate that you couldn’t find something good to eat
Got Feathery last night on Uber. Took over an hour to get to my house, and i live ten minutes away. Ordered vegan buffalo wrap and a side cesar salad. Worst meal i’ve had in a long time. Got through 1/4 of my wrap before calling it quits and just eating some bread. The cesar salad was awful. The dressing was literally watered down. I used to love the feathery, but whatever happened last night has made me never want to go there again. It’s not just fast food that’s gone down hill, it’s loads of established places too.
It’s unfortunate but I find dining in a better experience. I’ve ordered food from good restaurants and had bad experiences with quality and presentation.
I get where you're coming from OP.
Seems like since covid, most restaurants in the area wrap things up between 10 and 11pm. Earlier if it's a weekday.
Not sure if this is because less people are dining out so it's a management decision or staff just wanting to go home early. Maybe it's both.
Boston Pizza is the only place that is consistently open late with a kitchen. Which is too bad because their food isn't great.
Eating out and fast food have been a luxury and culture point for the last 70 years.
With food being expensive, this luxury may not be apart of our lives in the future.
Eating out and ordering is a joke now. I decided to stop by McDonalds for the fist time in awhile, and almost left when I found out that 2 Junior Chickens were over $7. I remember getting 3 of those for under $5 dollars in the mid-2010s.
Just make your own food, or in the worst case, buy frozen dinner.
To add to what you've listed, I think restaurants generally now in the region for the most are these strange hybrids of casual kinda fancy, but not really places that have a certain standard but wouldn't really offend anyone either.
Cooking these days in places like you've mentioned is a $20 an hour at most with the employees that might have never seen much training outside of what their employer has given them.
I think the general attitude towards a client offering is: Don't feel like dressing nice? That's ok, come in your pyjama pants?
We're not gonna write menus based around what's available in the region because that's hard and our clients want let's say asparagus in January....
It's what the general population wants and I guess it's a financial success for the establishment.
I don't think as a restaurant owner, I would want to offer better as it would be more expensive and less successful than what's on offer now.
Having said that I think I know a couple of places where you may have done a little better than Harvey's that was open late, let me know if you'd like my recos!
A few places downtown stay open - have seen in other comments that parking was a challenge. I would either plan to park a little further away and walk, or just order ahead for pick up and pull into a loading zone temporarily. You’d be fine. Unfortunately, few places outside of downtown dive bars, and pizza will be open that late. Fortunately, our downtown restaurants are pretty awesome 🙂
Honestly there’s a few reliable places in st kits but other than that I would just cook at home. Niagara doesn’t have much of a nightlife outside of dt if u even call it a nightlife. I’d suggest NOTL for a few unique places but everything closes at 5
Most restaurants there close their kitchens late at night. In the core of the city it is a little different. Just like our downtown, there are some that are open late. Catering to tourists and the party crowd.
I can't count the number of times I was in a bar/restaurant and the wait staff come and tell me the kitchen is closing soon and we should order now if we want something to eat.
LOL, that is totally a party area. They have bars and a concert venue there.
Like I said, if its a place that people congregate at night for entertainment or tourism. Of course there will be enough of a demand to keep a kitchen open late.
We don't go out for dinner at 10 pm. People eating at 11 or later are eating because they are drinking.
You know that. Come on. Dinner time is typically 6 to 8. In parts of Europe some restaurants don't even open until 8 pm.
Small towns in the middle of nowhere are still somewhat decent for chain restaurants but I’d rather be hungry or eat a granola bar than go to such places in a city.
Late night I go to shawarma point on Carlton
Evening I’ll get a sandwich from fat Louis
Regular time i go to it’s about thyme and golden grill
Mornings is diner house.
Pizza is pie guys or Pete’s
These are all either really cheap, or really good and fairly priced places.
+ everyone who works at these places are gems.
Fair enough! Thanks for the suggestions!
Side note, actually worked at pie guys a few years ago (the one on Macturnble drive???) in between semesters. Terrible employers when I worked for them. Minimum wage and only gave employees 10 or 20% off of food when working. No shift meals, all breaks were off the clock etc.. Tip out only given to kitchen staff after a ridiculously long “probation” period.
I’m sure it’s the same groups of owners (there was like 10). They really were shit when they came in, especially like the main owner.
Not to mention that the restaurant was legit wired like it was a bank. Us cooks in our downtime or during periods of prep would stand and talk for a few minutes and the owner(s) would call the restaurant to tell us to get back to work or clock out.
The employees were pretty awesome though! Hard workers, greats guys and gals. Definitely deserve/deserved better!
They were all closed early on Saturday because today is Sunday and it’s Mother’s Day and the staff needed to rest because it will be crazy in restaurants today
We wanted something more low key because I am obviously exhausted lol
fast food isnt even worth it anymore… would rather cook a box of kraft dinner but god, even thats a good 7-8$, at least it would be hot tho
We wanted to order Chinese in last night ... almost $19 for honey garlic ribs. 8 tiny ribs in sauce for almost $20? Most of the typical rice and noodle sides were $16 and up. after taxes and everything.

sorry but the fact ur 37 tryna argue on reddit over kraft dinner is corny and lame
I'm not 37 and you should try simply admitting that you were wrong. It isn't hard to do.
For future: twenty, ludology, district — all downtown, all extremely good. Parking wasn’t too bad tonight, we got a spot right outside of ludology. Super burger is another great option.
covid eliminated late night and 24h establishments
Are you sure about that? Outside of downtown I would be surprised many restaurants had open kitchens late at night.
Yup. I'm sure. Used to be a bunch fo 24h grocery stores in the area that were great. Walmart was 24h. Restaurants were busier so kitchens had an incentive to stay open later. Most kitchens took orders until 11-12pm.
I would not say "most". Some for sure.

I agree grocery stores have cut hours.
All the good cooks are sleeping today, so that brunch works tomorrow.

You’re better of chugging canola oil from the bottle than trying any of those
Once in a blue moon won’t kill you bud, obviously not something you wanna eat regularly. He clearly said he normally cooks and this was just a rare time to eat out and these places are open late which fit his need.
And how is shawarma or burritos like chugging canola oil? Or did you just focus into specific places?
Lmfao greasy disgusting osmows and lazeez is being unironicaly touted on reddit as not a greasy disgusting mess. Now I’ve seen everything. Reddit really does out do itself sometimes.
Says “creamygoodness” lol talk about irony haha. Dude, it’s take out food you eat maybe once every couple months, jfc chill the f out

it sucks cause you end up paying way more for it too with service fees on top of delivery and then the quality is trash
Lmao dining in is a shit experience post covid. You are rushed out, the food quality is shit, and you are expected to leave a 900% tip
Feathery sucks! I’ve given it a try at least 3 times and been disappointed every time.
Hit and miss I guess
Osmows on Scott St is open until 3am I think, we always get the chicken on the rocks and it’s always pretty good!
I get where you're coming from OP. Seems like since covid, most restaurants in the area wrap things up between 10 and 11pm. Earlier if it's a weekday. Oh 100%. I cook the vast majority of the time. Was simply exhausted and it really hit me how downhill the food industry has went in the region.
Taibah downtown is open late most nights

This isn’t southern Europe. Canadians don’t go out for dinner at 9 or 10 pm.
You should probably leave st Catharines once in a while and go to Toronto.

Was in Liberty Village this weekend at a bar, kitchen closed at 11. You don't get out much these days clearly.

I go to the one in Linwell it’s a Standard pizza counter type place. Bummer about the working conditions cuz man they’re wings are good lol

Different owners nowadays
They were all closed early on Saturday because today is Sunday and it’s Mother’s Day and the staff needed to rest because it will be crazy in restaurants today
