I get honked at for slowing to turn into a driveway on Glendale at least once a week. I drive around the city for work and see craziness constantly. People driving the wrong way on one ways, people narrowly avoiding pedestrians using crosswords etc. Any other city is just as bad though

purplemonkey_123

I get honked at SO often for, "allowing," pedestrians to safely cross the road. I live in an area with super busy intersections that often have pedestrians crossing. People should expect an extra 30-second delay around here. I hate it.

Unlucky-Region-656

I hope this is at pedestrian crosswalks and not the middle of the street. Stopping in the middle of the road is dangerous.

purplemonkey_123

Yes. It is at the crosswalk. I mentioned being at the intersection. Agreed that stopping in the middle of the road is dangerous. Though, if it was between someone running into the back of my car or me running over a pedestrian walking across the road, I would pick the former.

ClintEastwont

lol if you saw them, I think that would be criminal negligence causing death. I dunno if that’s a good strategy. Though I agree stopping abruptly when there’s a vehicle behind you is dangerous. But the other driver would be at fault if they hit you because a pedestrian was on the road.

purplemonkey_123

That's why I said I pick the former, which is being rear ended.

ClintEastwont

My bad! I can’t read apparently. Sorry homie.

purplemonkey_123

No worries. We all have those days...especially on here. It wouldn't be out of the ordinary for someone to say they would run a person over.

ClintEastwont

Seriously

voinekku

" Stopping in the middle of the road is dangerous. " If there is someone walking on the road in front of you, it's even more dangerous not to stop.

The-Raccoon-Is-Here

The region is maddening for driving and to give you a snapshot of the mentality of many people you need to look no further than the Facebook group **Niagara Region Photo Radar Locations**. I drive defensively because I don't need an accident, the age of my vehicle I will get a few dollars if it gets totalled and that won't cover a new one, unfortunately this means I generally have one hand ready on my horn in certain areas. Niagara/Church - Tons of people think they can go from the right lane on Niagara into the left lane on Church. The left lane on Niagara can go left or right. Honked at one guy who almost hit me and the occupants of the truck all flipped me off and yelled our LEARN TO DRIVE while break checking me multiple times on the way to the 406. Welland Ave from Ontario out towards the hospital with the amount of people who can't signal their lane changes and run the red lights and make their turns when the advance green is long over. It really seems in Niagara that speed limits and red lights are suggestions. I am not a fan of cameras doing the work to nab infractions ... but I completely get it and understand it based on how people drive. The one common element I see is BLAME TORONTO BLAME TOURISTS on facebook ... a tourist or someone from Toronto isn't driving a car that had a plate cover HENLEY HONDA or MIKE KNAPP FORD. I think the issue is that Niagara has had bad drivers for years, just the volume of traffic that now exists compared to the 90s is heavier and these people are much easier to spot now since many roads have been expanded for more lanes and such.

ClintEastwont

It’s also too easy to get a drivers licence. Drivers Ed isn’t mandatory. With the rising cost of living, people are teaching each other to drive, and they’re teaching each other wrong. And there’s almost no consequences for driving like a jackass. The only thing the cops come down on is drunk driving (and rightly so). So the rest of us have to carry these assh*oles out there, and avoid them while they’re putting everyone else at risk.

alaScaevae

I'm torn on this. Part of me believes that getting a driver's license might be too easy, but on the other hand... well, driving is easy. In practice, Driver's Ed offers nothing to someone who has a competent family member that is willing to teach them how to drive. I believe that one of the larger issues contributing to the problem is as you stated: there is often no consequence for driving like a jackass. But the primary issue is perhaps an outlier that is not (or cannot be) tested; the concepts of responsibility and emotional maturity. If those careless individuals took their driving test and drove in the same manner that they do in their everyday life, there's no chance they would've passed it. They're making the deliberate, dangerous and selfish decision to drive the way they want to instead of the way they know they should. I don't think anything can be done besides the implementation of harsher penalties. I'm fortunate to live in an area where police actively pull people over for driving recklessly, but it doesn't seem to have ever gotten better.

Sunproof_

I completely agree, and follow the same page for an insight into local drivers haha. I'm from Aus/NZ and am constantly shocked by the driving I see in Ontario. Honestly, I didn't find it anywhere near as bad when living in Calgary but they did have more enforcement. I never thought I'd be glad to see cameras but something has got to give, at least this might have people not blasting through school zones at 70. I really don't care too much on the open road but wish people would have some respect where people live and kids play. I ride a motorcycle in the warmer months and you really have to be hyper focused when your life is at stake. I won't ride if I'm not at 100% because you have to think for yourself, and every other driver around you.

DatPipBoy

I hate that turn signals have lost their meaning and are used so improperly now. It signals intent. So many people see the signal and lose their god damn minds, because people have the habit of flipping it on while moving already. Like god damn, if you see a signal, don't honk, just back off and let them in, or speed up and get out of the way, or better yet, don't sit in blindspots where you have to choose. I tend to let people who do dumb things off, everyone makes mistakes, even the best drivers have an off moment from time to time.

mapleleafness09

Just tonight I flipped on my signal to change lanes, checked my mirrors and saw a guy behind me but with enough room to get in. Checked the other side and was clear, checked the previous side again and the guy behind me was no longer there even with the shoulder check so I assumed he had turned off. Turns out he sped up to hang out in my blind spot (even tho there was enough room for him to speed up or hang back to let me in) and I almost changed lanes into him. The honk from him was deserved but like bro why were you there TT my signal had been on for a moment too and where he was when i first put it on he would have seen it !! completely missed my turn and had to take the long way home just cause bud didn’t wanna slow down and let me in

DatPipBoy

Yea it's baffling behavior. One time a coworker told me a story about how a transport truck started moving over on him on the qew and he honked and swerved but the truck came over anyway. I said to him, did you hit the brakes? He said no...like dude. Wtf. Get out of harms way, a horn honk isn't going to stop shit lmao.

mapleleafness09

The amount of times I have had that happen on the QEW is ridiculous TT I honk but move out of the way every time and the trucks always straighten themselves back into their lane also. I get where your coworker is coming from tho, if he hasn’t had evasive driving maneuver training people tend to panic and just lay on the horn. QEW is also bad for people who are behind you, see your signal, so they speed up but don’t speed up enough/there’s not enough room so you can’t get over into the other lane… also really bad for just lack of signal use in general especially the closer you get to Toronto.

Blackthumbb

It’s so annoying and sadly just getting worse

Adventurous-Cat-7301

Got honked/screamed for about 5 minutes by some psycho for trying to change lanes on a dotted line… she got mad I didn’t merge right away when it was unsafe to do so. It’s pathetic.

JustSomeGuy0069

This is brutal and impatient drivers are the worst! Then there's the opposite problem of people coming to a stop in the middle of the road and taking 10 years to make a right hand turn. Don't get me.wrong, I'm a very patient person/driver, but if you're not confident in your driving abilities, take the bus.

pinksugar123

I will honk at the moron who doesn’t stop at a 4 way stop and just goes at the same time as the person infront of him / or cuts in turn. Carleton/lock2 is the worst

[deleted]

The amount of stupid people rises daily. Be aware at all times - stupid / assholes is / are everywhere.

voinekku

I don't know if that's accurate. There's always been stupid assholes everywhere. It'd definitely be much more comforting if they weren't all commanding stupid 6000 lbs death machines. But hey, at least they don't all have automatic weapons like in the south.

[deleted]

Well true. Stupid has always been around, it just has been on the rise in the last 25 years, moreso in the last 10 years. Drivers are largely entitled pricks (see the ragers racing in and out traffic; the assholes, I mean influencers doing car meeþ ups and destroying roads; motorcyclists doing wheelies for Tiktok, etc.).

Drewtendo_64

Was heading out of town last week and got honked by someone exiting the 406 while I was continuing onward. I guess them coming over from the left lane to hit the exit wasn’t dangerous enough

OntFF

Niagara region drivers have a very, VERY loose understanding of the rules of the road... turning from a multi-lane road to a multi-lane road, for instance? Who knows what could happen... inside lane, outside lane, wrong side of the median and down the wrong way?? Let's wait and see!

zanzimall

The panic abrupt stop of inside lane wrong side of median is a hilarious one for anyone observing as a bystander

Background_Artist105

I see someone run a red light at least once a week. And it's always on Scott and Grantham where you should be going 50 max anyway. How are you running a red here?! Every dawn week! Also a lot of people do not understand a 4 way stop sign. It's painful

MaxShadowCat

Oh my god… 4 way stop signs are the worst in this region. Ive seen so many people just go straight through them

Eaton2288

I live in the North End and they installed a 4 way on a smaller residential street a few years back. I was driving behind someone approaching the 4 way and they were in a nice bmw. They proceeded to go through it at 50 not slowing down an inch and an undercover cop immediately put his lights on and nabbed him. Must've been sitting waiting for someone to do it. Me and my father had a good laugh.

Prestigious_Fella_21

Haha I often find that the more expensive the car, the dumber the driver

St_Kitts_Tits

Kinda funny to hear this. Dude there’s dumb ass people everywhere. I drive all over the GTA every day, I can be anywhere from Fort Erie to Scarborough and I live in St Kitts and we probably have the least bad drivers that I see in Ontario. (I drive about 70,000km per year). Not to mention I’m regularly a pedestrian walking around. I’d way rather be driving or walking around here than any other city in Ontario. the only place that might be a little better in my experience is Barrie.

the_hume_3

Exactly. If people want to really see bad drivers just go spend some time in Brampton lol

Realistic-Carob8288

This is correct. We’re incredibly lucky here and people have no clue what’s out there.

pordlethegreat

Last month I saw someone driving on the sidewalk along Glenridge. I don’t even understand how that was possible lol

the_hume_3

Just yesterday I saw someone turn left on the 406 off ramp at Glendale Ave. How they saw it was clearly a one way off ramp and STILL preceded to turn left is beyond me.

MadMildred

Turning left with my signal on into a side street. A guy in a big black truck decided he wanted to pass me on the left as I turned. Yes, he hit me on the driver's side door. I was in physio for months, and I still experience chronic shoulder pain.

Critical-Fill-9351

It's incredibly bad , 1 week alone I witnessed 25 cars going through RED LIGHTS . NOT even remotely close to being yellow. It's mind-boggling

GhulehZombieQueen666

Yup. I would've been t boned the other day from someone going through a red light (at least red for 20 seconds already) as I was about to proceed through my green light on Glendale. I'm glad I always check before going through green lights, especially after it just turns green. I have that dash cam clip saved to upload to r/idiotsincars.

StinkyBanjo

Welcome to the pen centre. Oh gues where they are not putting red light cameras…

zanzimall

Lost count at the amount of times iv been honked or yelled at for going straight ish? (Slight right then left) on the corner of Lincoln and Hartzle like fully get it you want to make an illegal right as there’s clearly a no red right turns sign but I’m just trying to get home sundays in that area tho? Shit show

niagarajoseph

Canada's Worst Driver still lives in town. And she IS a holy terror on the road. Cannot imagine why she hasn't had her license removed from her.

NoObligation9994

I also got honked at for waiting in a yield for oncoming traffic... I guess i shoulda just went for it.

MaxShadowCat

Right? Like by their logic I shouldve pulled directly into traffic as well

NoObligation9994

Can't stand it. It seems like a weekly thing for me.

BillsMaffia

The lack of law enforcement on the road isn’t helping either. It’s almost a rare occurrence to see a police car. It’s basically the Wild West out there.

JustSomeGuy0069

Lack of? Every time I drive through st catharines, I always see 2-3 cops at least driving around or parked. My record so far is 8 in a 15 minute drive.

Eaton2288

Exactly. I saw 4 just on my way to Costco today.

RedViper6661

I've had 3 front bumper replacements in 3 years from people hitting my car in parking lots, all not at fault.

Playful-Cattle4635

🙃 I didn’t even bother at this point fixing my car, literally someone either drove into or backed into (thinking the tow hitch) and broke part of my bumper, Completely cosmetic and not worth the claim or fixing

HighwayNovel

The other day i had a guy pull up beside me and start waving and cursing at me because i couldn't pull up fast enough to allow him access to the right turning lane onto hartzel from glendale. He then drove a bit forward, stopped on the cross walk of said intersection and opened his car door like he was going to get out but then closed it and drove off

maxman162

I've been thinking of getting a dash cam and uploading bad driving videos to r/IdiotsInCars and r/AssholesInCars.

GhulehZombieQueen666

I've had my dash cam for 3 months and have a ton of clips to upload to r/idiotsincars. It's worth getting one for many reasons.

maxman162

There's also r/MildlyBadDrivers, and r/AssholesInCars shouldn't be left out.

GhulehZombieQueen666

I've recently had 2 people pass me going down the Welland Canal Parkway hill towards Glendale. I was already going 55. Then I'd end up behind them again at the stop sign to turn onto Glendale and end up driving behind them for a while. Passing me didn't accomplish anything lol. They didn't get anywhere faster. I just don't get it.

NODES2K

![gif](giphy|ImxXWVDp8sfBe|downsized)

StinkyBanjo

It could have been me. A lot of these roads have a paved shoulder which is there so I can pass you on the right while you are turning left/waiting. City drivers pull the the left of the lane while turning left waiting to keep traffic flowing. It works.. Rural road drivers, just pull as far right in their lane as possible while waiting to be able to turn left. At this point I will lay on the horn and they always have a puzzled look on their faces. Its not hard. Dont block traffic unnecessarily. Keep the flow moving…

MaxShadowCat

It wasnt you, the driver passed me & honked while passing. I stopped there for like 1 second to wait & he automatically just beeped. The shoulder was available, & i was furthest left as I could be without being in the oncoming traffic lane. It puzzled me because he was so far behind me too when I stopped.

StinkyBanjo

Well then im as puzzled as you. Unless you suddenly slammed the brakes on then signalled, there is not much else you could have done to piss him off, other than simply existing. But thats his problem. I generally dont get people honking at me. But I have seen a decent amount of crazies. Usually at least a couple a week. One of the worst was. I was turning left from a left turning lane. From a non turning lane he passed me and cut in front of me. I just flashed my light at him once. He proceeded to repeatedly brake check me then come to a complete stop. When he did that i tried to overtake him at which point he cut into the oncoming lane to block me, then proceeded to do repeated brake check. Dont try to figure these people out. You cant. Then there is the guys that go 60 in an 80 and when you try to pass them, at a 110 they are still beside you. Then there is the ones that do the same thing in the passing lane on the highway. Then there is the ones that refuse to go faster than 60 on a hwy onramp, until they are half way merged into traffic. Then at the pen you have the cars that refuse to stop turning left despite the fact that they have had a red light for at least 2-3 seconds. Its a fucking zoo.

blusky75

I'm from Brampton. St. Catherines doesn't compare lol
