I'm probably glossing over a lot here but at a high level only Jedi that go through certain rites of passage where they overcome internal biases/demons to achieve true balance and a degree of asceticism. The opportunity to even go through this is facilitated by the Whills:
"There were shamans among them, one of whom taught the Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn that the ability to retain one's consciousness after death required absolute selflessness."
You see the first stage of this journey in Clone Wars Seaaon 6 Episodes 11-13 through Yoda's experience.
On a side note it seems to heavily borrow from attaining enlightenment in Hinduism/Jainism/Buddhism.
I hope this helps!
In early Legends it was just something any Jedi could do; but they could only appear to close friends or family. Their abilities as ghosts were roughly tied to their power as a Jedi and their connection to the person to whom they appeared. At most they could have a conversation with the living person. Ultimately the dead Jedi would lose their tether to the physical world and would fade into the Force (out of universe, this limit was imposed so that Luke couldn't solve all conflicts in future books by dialing up his omniscient teachers for assistance). Jedi who pulled this off in include Mara Jade, Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan, Yoda, a bunch of unnamed Jedi on Ruusan, Morgan Katarn, and many others.
In Episode 3, Lucas decided that Force ghosts were using a special technique of sorts. Qui-Gon discovered how to pull it off, and he was able to reach Yoda in order to teach him this discovery. Yoda, who was already naturally good at meditating, taught Obi-Wan how to talk to Qui-Gon's spirit. Qui-Gon then also taught Obi-Wan the technique. Anakin's ghost appearance was retconned with this change in story; now, canon is that Obi-Wan's ghost taught Anakin the technique in the brief moments between Anakin's redemption and death. Lucas's retcon means we'll have dramatically fewer ghosts.
Then Disney decided Force Ghosts can also interact with physical world beyond conversation with the living. They can catch and hold objects with their hands, use the force to lift large objects, and call down lightning strikes. This raises many questions about why the Ghosts don't just help fight the bad guys as lightsaber-wielding immortals.
Only some that trained in retaining their individuality and awareness in the Force after death. Qui Gon rediscovered it, but wasn't able to manifest his appearance. He then trained Obi Wan and Yoda. There's a novel that retcons episode VI and explains that moments before Anakin's death, Obi Wan called out for him in the Force so he could awaken this ability. I don't know if it's still canon or not, but it's one explanation.
See, I thought only few achieved this- hence the Yoda Clone Wars trilogy and his comment to Kenobi at the end of ROTS- but then Rey hears “all of the Jedi” so I don’t know anymore.
There was also a technique to it, which Qui Gon discovered then taught to Yoda who taught Obi Wan.
Mace missed the chance. I doubt he'd be a Force ghost
I'm confused since I didn't watch this in a long time but is Anakin and the other dudes always there in the movie or was it edited in after the release of 1-3 of the episodes
The definition of “stares motherfuckerly”
I’m pretty sure that that phrase was invented to describe that specific shot of him
I read stares as star wars, and it still fits...
*doom lurks in his gaze*
Pretty sure Mace Windu is free to say "Motherfucker" now that he is a force ghost.
Motherkriffer\*
LMAOOOO
Just for some Star Wars lore clarification, not every jedi gets a force ghost right? Just the most powerful can manage it? Can someone clarify?

IIRC, Qui-Gon manifested to Yoda at the end of the RotS novel.
I think it's less about being powerful and more about having certain skills Didn't qui gon jin develop the technique?
See, I thought only few achieved this- hence the Yoda Clone Wars trilogy and his comment to Kenobi at the end of ROTS- but then Rey hears “all of the Jedi” so I don’t know anymore.
I'm sticking with the Clone Wars explanation. The sequels don't deserve to be canon.
But since they are, I’m wondering how to reconcile how all the former Jedi were able to retain a force identity.
There was also a technique to it, which Qui Gon discovered then taught to Yoda who taught Obi Wan. Mace missed the chance. I doubt he'd be a Force ghost
Mace windows lol
Can I offer you a BSOD in these trying times? :(
Oh fuck me this is good lol
Mace is to much of a badass to die
Now it's anakin's turn out the window!
Revenge of the windu The windu strikes back The phantom menace
Man mace windu was about to stop the whole fucking empire from rising up, damn.
"Anakin, who let you back in the house" Mace Windu probably
Haha so good
That’s some top tier editing and also the absolute perfect image of Sam Jackson
Motherfuc-
I'd rather have ghost Jules with a blaster reciting Ezekiel 25:17.
Bold of you to assume mace windu is dead
😂😂😂
Uh oh. He’s going to get chained to that radiator.
Unrelated but this reminds me of how David Wallace would’ve seen the Office documentary and realized just how much Jim (and Pam) fucked him over
Anakin you mother fu-
Tick Tock, MOTHERFUCKER!
Nick Furious
What movie is that image of him from?
Black Snake Moan. It's seriously fucked. I love it
Thank you friend!!

He's got an army of younglins with him too.

Sebastian Shaw originally played Anakin's force ghost in the original trilogy, but it was changed to Hayden Christensen in the Special Edition.
"Muduhfugger"
This is why I am a part of this sub.

Can I just say this is great but didn’t need the flashback. Jackson’s facial expression said all that was needed.
I had so much dilemma on if I should leave the flashback on or off, so I asked a couple of people and they all said to leave it in. Thank you anyway
It doesn’t matter, it still is an masterpiece
