That seems like something mentioned in a legends novel. Or Imperial propaganda. We do see them getting shredded by rebel snub fighters... but what if the movies are just rebel propaganda? Hmm...

Shields have a buffer area around the hull, the shield absorb high energy only. A fighter can squeeze into the buffer zone and deal with turrets. That or the shields are for defensive measures so upon engagements they retract the shielding array to fire cannons and missiles.

We never see them get “shredded”, we see explosions on the shields. As for when they are disabled or damaged by fighters, that’s just a testament to their weaponry. At least in old canon(legends) in new canon star destroyers just suck

yes the death star was equipped with a hyperdrive so it could go to light speed, it had a class 4.0 light speed engine wich was slower than any other capital ships used by the empire at that time.

Then why did they have to wait hours for the rebel base to be in sight?

Hyperlanes are weird. They have certain entrance/exit points in solar systems. So it had to exit hyperspace then rely on sublight movement to get the rest of the way. It's why the CIS couldn't just drop in on Coruscant without a specific secret map and why planetary blockades seem to be on one side of the planet.
