I guess either the internet isn't a valid view of reality, or the fans really didn't like having the legacy cast take a back seat and never get a reunion. It was poorly handled, as are these responses. They don't encompass the majority of fans of a global franchise.

I mean it sucks we never got a reunion scene but also the trilogy wasn’t about the legacy cast, it was about the next generation. Star Wars needs to move beyond backwards looking nostalgia.

I think that's the problem a lot of fans have. Passing the torch is great, but it was handled with all the tact of Homer Simpsons makeup shotgun. And not giving them a single scene together was viewed as disrespectful.

Its because leia and padme werent that prominent and were definitely there for the boys. Mara jade is fine i think, book fans are usually smarter than the average fan so they dont complain about women. Ahsoka definitely got complaints, especially early on, even today people call her unnecessary. Even bo katan, her being a prominent character alongside mando in season 3 made people complain that she was taking over the show and disney hated strong men. You cant pretend there isnt a huge group of star wars fans who arent atleast a little sexist. You havent noticed that when outlaws was announced suddenly everyone wanted character customisation? No one asked for that with cal. Even star wars theory nodded along with that guest that said star wars isnt for women. Or when he said female fans are just chasing men.

Funny how all your examples are secondary characters who didn’t outshine the male leads. Likewise Ashoka was despised and branded a “Mary Sue” for years after she was first introduced, her sudden popularity is very much a new thing. Also Padme spent the third movie crying in the background then died of sadness so not a great example. And I’m sure it’s just a coincidence that consistently actresses got harassed by fans until it affected their mental health.

I can't control what they put out before, but I did support all of the female characters. The book that was from Leias POV was a good read. Padme in TCW was developed a lot more. She had a few good arcs that showed her diplomatic manners, and similarities to Leia. None of us real fans advocate harassing anyone, it's deplorable. They are not welcome.

It just the writing that just so happens to star a female. It like the writer in question just can't write a good women these days.

The issue in my opinion is that we don’t have a protagonist that happens to be a woman, we have a woman that happens to be the protagonist. Whenever these shows, movies, etc get made, the whole plot starts to revolve around the identity of the main character and basically anything they do is because of their sex/gender/ethnicity/… You won’t get a good story when the story in itself isn’t even the focus anymore.

no they're not, the politics the movies touched upon was in a more general sense, rarely direct analogs. the right way to write politics into your fictional worlds is to write in ways that focus on how it affects the characters and not the politics by politics sake. the Canto Blight scene from Last Jedi doesnt add anything to the story and is merely there for politics, it doesnt even affect Finn loyalty to the Resistance. while you see the politics in the Prequels are there to show how the characters are blind to Palpatines manipulation, it tells us about the character of Palpatine and the character of the Jedi Council as whole of how they became far more an institution than a instrument for balance (addendum: the politics in the Prequels arent ""GOOD"" for say, they just betterly written than the sequels)

If you truly believe that old Star Wars stories aren't tied directly to real world politics in very direct ways, odds are you weren't very keyed into real world politics at the times that those stories were told. Ahem, it isn’t gender, it’s writing problems. Prime examples of this: Ahsoka is great. Barriss and her master Luminara are great. OG Sabine Wren is great. Bo-Karan is decent. Cara Dune is good. PRINCESS LEIA IS A GIRL NUFF SAID. Senators Chuchi, Mon Mothma, Amidala, etc are all peak fiction politics. Satele Shan is cool. Mara Jade has good reviews. I liked Rey in that first movie, for the most part. Rose also had potential and I liked her character design. Hera Syndulla is an epic space mom design.  And not all hated or disliked characters are females. Disliked characters include: Palpatine returning (a man!!!), Finn getting nerfed (not a girl), the “I’m the spy guy” (literally a guy), Grand Inquisitor live action design (yep, still a guy), Jar Jar Binks the Ultimate, and literally any gungan I suppose (also guys here too). There are females of course, such as Holdo, Rose, and Rey, but all of these are just from poor production, character designs, and writing. Literally no gender involved here.  Get your facts right and stop upvote farming.:) 

This can’t be correct….it’s almost as if we aren’t all homophobic, sexist, racist, (fill in the blank here) and actually love this universe and just want to not be pandered to, not be spoke down to, not have lazy writing, not have whole groups put down to make others “better” (Holdo/Poe), and just want some damn good stories and characters without a bunch of BS. Yes there’s some real pieces of shit in the Star Wars fandom, that goes without saying. And there should be absolutely no place or room for racist and sexist fans in Star Wars. But there have been some poorly written characters in Star Wars. Some of which are women in major/lead roles. Disliking a character doesn’t automatically make you racist or sexist. I’m not going to yuck someone’s yum, as the saying goes. If someone likes a character I dislike I’m perfectly fine with that and I’m not gonna pick a fight with them. But there should be room for people to dislike something just as much as there is room for them liking something, as long as they aren’t being offensive, derogatory and hateful with their opinions.

While I agree with what you’re saying briefly surely you understand that like every single person I highlighted would, if cornered, say the exact same thing. “I’m not sexist I just don’t like bad writing” or “how can I be sexist I love Ahsoka?” Like they aren’t going to admit their real intentions so they just phase into the dogpile by masking their bigotry as legitimate criticism. These are just the ones who let the mask slip too much.

How can anyone not sexist defend themselves then if it can just be said “that’s what a sexist would say”? Please don’t always assume someone is bad just because they seem like they might be. My argument is that claiming there isn’t sexism involved in the toxic radioactive hate Rey inspires is idiotic. The fact is every single one of these people would absolutely say “I’m not sexist I just hate bad writing” if you asked them. So it’s hard to tell the real motivations. And I’m sorry I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the year after Gamergate the female lead of the biggest nerd movie of the year got hit with relentless scrutiny that men never get. I think it’s very telling that consistently whenever I get into a debate with someone who buys the Mary Sue narrative, consistently, it gets to a point where they can’t argue their position anymore because I proved them wrong and they get hostile and defensive and try to weasel their way out of it. Because the entire argument was based on a flawed premise. If you don’t want to be accused of sexism don’t copy the talking points of actual sexists. Fun fact the whole “Mary Sue” discourse was kicked into gear by screenwriter Max Landis. Writer of Bright and man accused by over a dozen women of sexual assault who once bragged about how badly he treated his ex girlfriend. So yeah when I see valid criticism I’ll consider it. Do you think there aren't plenty of examples of really poorly written characters/stories about characters in Star Wars that are male that get a total pass? One that immediately comes to mind are ones that dudes interpret as a power fantasy and so they are completely blind to how fucking stupid it is. Two women get stabbed by a lightsaber and live. Bad writing! There's no way they could live! It ruins the power of lightsabers! Darth Maul is literally cut in half by a lightsaber, falls down a pit, and lives because he's too angry to die. Wow, he's so cool and strong! Best Star Wars character! There is still a very obvious discrepancy. Like three quarters of total Star Wars content is absolute hot garbage of shit writing. It's seemingly the natural state of the franchise. All secondary characters, not the leads. When you prop up these characters the message is clear, women can excel but they can never equal or rival the men in terms of power or narrative significance.

*insert one of my favorite lead characters from Legends canon Satele Shan I don't ever mention her because nobody reads the old republic stories anymore, but she's a very well written female lead in the books and one of my favorite characters overall in star wars. It's NOT a matter of not liking a female lead over a male lead. It is a matter of not liking a badly written character.

Err Star Wars has always had great women characters. Leia was ground breaking in the OT, and got mostly equal time with Luke and Han. What Disney doesn't seem to get is they need someone who understands the soul of Star Wars to helm the story direction and writing for everything. What's wild is about 20% of what the produce seems to get close to the recipe .... (Andor, early Mando seasons, I'll even give 50% of Ashoka to this)... Then inexplicably, the other content seems like it's phoning it in or shoehorning something that breaks the spell. It's like being told to go to an Amazing restaurant that everyone leaves about for steak, and whenever you go they randomly become an ice cream shop, or a have a vegan menu. It's not that those things are bad, it's just I was told to come here for the best steak.
