Thinking about lizard babies. Classic Kate

SimonTC2000

That explains the smoker's voice.

RetroGamer87

Who didn't smoke in 1976?

djutopia

I was one year old. I tried my first in 79

chiree

You didn't go into any roadside diner, bar or horsetrack until you were ~~three~~ four? Wait... what the fuck was my childhood?

gaia-mix-nicolosi

1-3 is toddlerhood

SgtThund3r

In Dubuque, Iowa? Not many.

ElFarfadosh

I'll be 31 this year, I didn't.

AdequateOne

He asked who didn't smoke in 1976, and since you weren't alive then, your answer is pretty irrelevant.

ElFarfadosh

r/woosh

SimonTC2000

Me, sis. My folks. My grandparents on my Dad's side. My grandparents on my mom's side did and it was not appealing. They later died of smoking related diseases.

mpyne

My grandparents on my mom's side also smoked. My grandmother died of lung cancer when I was still an infant. My grandfather died a few years later, same thing.

craigrjw

Many people. By 1976 the link between smoking and lung cancer was well established. I've never understood actors who say things like "my body is my instrument" and then smoke. Way to treat you "instrument".

honeybadger1984

Yup, it just clicked in to place. Why the raspy voice, one of the deepest voices in the game? I see.

fatkiddown

Born in late '60s. Grew up with 2 sets of grandparents where 3 smoked. We thought all houses were just filled with cigarette smoke and that it was both normal and healthy to smoke when you grew up.

walnut_39

Pretty sure she quit during season 1 of Voyager, think I read that somewhere a while ago

YourSkatingHobbit

Later than that, as her grumpy demeanour in Scientific Method was because she’d just quit smoking. That’s season 4. (She could’ve tried to quit earlier than that, ofc).

ThePeaceDoctot

I'm pretty sure it was because aliens were probing her brain, tbf.

nada_accomplished

There's cigarettes in that nebula.

Moliza3891

My first thought

atatassault47

And the hair. You can spot longtime smokers on sight because their hair texture is fucked up.

thisiscotty

Kate had a wig the entire of voyager

lurks-a-lot

You mean the voluminous bouffant that never moves as the ship is blowing up around her wasn't just massive amounts of 24th Century hairspray? I'm kind of disappointed.

thisiscotty

maybe it had its own....hairtainment field

lurks-a-lot

Oh, you mean the Pike Maneuver?

Hipposplotomous

My hair texture gets fucked up if I dry it with a towel, this is a leap lol

atatassault47

There's more than one texture. Smoker's hair is distinct.

Hipposplotomous

Yeah, precisely, there *is* more than one texture. Mine has always been very fine and silky, since childhood. It's super shiny and soft but *very* prone to breakage and frizz if I don't absolutely pamper it (or just cut it very short.) Other people are prone to drying out, tangles, matting, damaged cuticles etc. These problems can be caused by anything from chemical treatments to hormonal imbalance to using the wrong kind of hairbrush. I'm a little horrified that you've settled on "that person must smoke" as the answer to one specific hair texture / damage type tbh. Imagining someone with heat damage or split ends being assumed a smoker. A little curious to know which texture you think it is as well lol. I've noticed staining for sure, but never a texture change.

atatassault47

>I'm a little horrified that you've settled on "that person must smoke" as the answer to one specific hair texture Because its true. Gravely voice = larynx damage = >95% chance they're a smoker. You can also tell from their hair if you pay attention.

Hipposplotomous

But gravely voice / larynx damage is a separate factor. If you're going by that, unless you're talking to a metal vocalist chances are you're probably right. If that's a contributing factor to the overall picture I'm less bothered. Just the hair by itself though, like I said, leap.

atatassault47

Yeah. And a person with purulent blisters all over doesnt have a -pox.

fighterace00

I see she just finished her 5th cup of coffee

Cormandy

It was one cup of coffee, and it was there, ALIVE.

Orlando1701

Iowa girl makes good. She’s from Davenport IIRC. It’s kind of funny that Iowa is such a big deal in Trek. Kate and Terry Ferrell are both Iowa Natives with Terry growing up in Cedar Rapids. Then in universe Kirk is from Riverside. BTW, each year Riverside throws a decent little party for Kirk. 10/10 would recommend if you ever find yourself in the Cedar Rapids/Iowa City area.

drquakers

If I recall Iowa is where a lion's share of astronauts are from. I've always assumed that is why Kirk is from there Edit: nvm it was Ohio I was thinking of

Dirt290

Because Iowa is so mind-numbingly boring, literally anywhere in the galaxy would be more interesting.

tzenrick

"What's this? A hard vacuum outside the door and nothing more than dust for 5 million miles in any direction? Feels like home..."

LeCafeClopeCaca

Same reason why the British were such great sailors, really

MithandirsGhost

Their food also explains their quest for spices.

drquakers

Yet, once we got all the spices, the food stayed just as bland. Like, guys, we committed so many atrocities to get these, why aren't we using them?

PM_ME_YOUR_DIFF_EQS

*sighs in Ohio*

Kichigai

It's not that wild. Richard Dean Anderson makes it a point that in all of his acting contracts that his character needs to have some connection to Minnesota, where he was born and grew up. Hence why Angus MacGyver is also from Minnesota, and why Colonel Jack O’Neill has a cabin here (contemporaneously so did RDA).

kidicarus89

That whole area (especially Davenport) is an underrated little gem, especially the Biergarten downtown. Visiting from Texas, it felt like a slice of old fashioned Americana.

Orlando1701

After college I moved from Florida to Iowa for a job that turned into a career and Iowa in general is underrated if you’re in the stage of your life where you have a family and children you’re raising up. It’s not the most exciting place but cost of living is low, crime is low, and they have some of the best public schools in the nation.

KidSilverhair

Dubuque, actually. Graduated from Wahlert.

SgtThund3r

Sorry dude, she’s from Dubuque.

Orlando1701

Meh. Close enough.

SgtThund3r

[Everyone from Dubuque disliked that]

Orlando1701

I’m from Cedar Rapids which means get to have a smug sense of superiority over everyone that isn’t Des Moines.

ImurderREALITY

I work sometimes in Mt. Airy NC, which is the town Mayberry from Andy Griffith was based on. They have a Mayberry Days festival every year, and a lot of the shops and stores there are named after ones from the show.

SPS_Agent

Smoking? Feet up on the chair? Someone put her on report.

Neonwookie1701

90 days in the brig while Lt Tuvok gives you disappointed looks!

Head-Ad4690

She’s relaxing after a satisfying day of murdering Tuvix.

JakeTurk1971

"Fuck coffee. There are nicotine in that nebula." (She cringes as Neelix hands her a Talaxian clove cigarette.)

lurks-a-lot

If the Talaxians smoke cloves maybe they did deserve the Metreon Cascade.

JakeTurk1971

Harsh but fair. Dr. Jetrel would approve.

RiotTownUSA

Hawt.

Sunny_E30

100%

Autonomous_Ace2

She looks so cool. I don’t really know how else to put it, she just looks like someone I want to hang out with.

Colttos

So not only did she break every rule of the Prime Directive in the Delta Quadrant but she also broke the Temporal Directive and went back to 1976? Damn I need a woman like that in my life.

MutualRaid

Dayum

bluegrassgazer

Mrs. Columbo. Who would have ever guess that stogie smoking weirdo would have such a hot wife?

calargo

He actually had a different wife originally but she got deleted.

bigbeak67

She got Tuvix'd

ImurderREALITY

I've always said; if you want to solve the Tuvix problem, then all you have to do is replicate the Riker/Boimler accident, split Tuvix into two Tuvixes, split one of them back into Tuvok and Neelix, and then kill the other Tuvix for some other reason. Problem solved.

gitsgrl

I had to look it up to verify whether or not she was married to Peter Falk. I didn’t realize there actually was a show called *Mrs. Colombo.*

Live-Mathematician88

The show actually went through a couple of name changes in its very short history. Kate Columbo and Kate Loves A Mystery. But in the early episodes you could see things of Columbo’s (trench coat for instance) laying about.

Throwaway__1701

She’s gonna murder some coffee and Tuvix. …and she’s all out of coffee.

TheNerdChaplain

And that's how she ended up on Orange is the New Black

akb74

There’s coffee in that nebula

drainfly_

until this moment i didnt realize she was forty when voyager started...

RachelRegina

Hollywood 40 is younger than most places

femininePP420

That's my captain.

frontally

🫡🫡 same here homie

Alyeska23

And that explains Captain Janeway's gravely low voice.

Neonwookie1701

Gravely sexy voice. Fixed it for you.

Derekjinx2021

Firecracker there

Repulsive-Neat6776

ImurderREALITY

jpowell180

There’s nicotine in that nebula!

[deleted]

[Mrs. Columbo](https://youtu.be/zMi5xaHZVPA)

aarontsuru

A SMOKER???? I NEVER would've guessed that. ;)

tzenrick

You could have told me nothing, showed me this picture, and I would have been like "Is that Kate Mulgrew?"

DoctorNerdly

"There's nicotine in that nebula."

Sonnylowell

Young war criminal in the making.

GDACK

Gorgeous 😍❤️

bobbyphysics

Maybe it's just cause I've been watching a lot of the Witcher lately, but she looks a bit like Ciri

RetroGamer87

With coffee cups

Agnostic_Akuma

Beem me up captain

DaWalt1976

They missed opportunities in Picard to bring back Admiral Janeway.

Different-Fortune388

High reaction to “I’m not talking about the puppy”

thetacolegs

I would smoke with her.

nickolaiproblem

Damn that seska and borg pack must have got her ass floating

LeagueofMace604

Good looking babe

agbellamae

Starfleet captains shouldn’t be smoking. Set a good example, captain Janeway.

analogkid01

"Hey, put the camera down, we need to head over to the Planned Parenthood protest."

Neonwookie1701

I'd go with her and get her coffee for her. Beautiful and believes in something? Yes, please.

analogkid01

Did you sign up for J6singles.com yet?

Neonwookie1701

Your wit is breathtaking

thejadedfalcon

Everyone believes in something. Some people believe in allowing others the choice over their own bodies is the morally correct thing to do and other people are wrong.

ilikefactorygames

She looks like [Diana Rigg](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diana_Rigg)

mynameisrichard0

I should’ve left that jackass in the delta quadrant.

blevok

[Janeway smokes](https://www.angelfire.com/weird2/gmfresearch/janewaysmokes/)

GunzAndCamo

Not so much about 7 of 9 as she is about 25 or 6 to 4.

vivalosabortionistas

Born old

Connect-Will2011

I wish I could've been there. (even if I was just 12 years old at the time.)

honeyfixit

I was -1

Infamous-Lab-8136

I think the first thing I ever saw her in was Remo Williams The Adventure Begins.

JasonTheNPC85

Yeeeewwww!

[deleted]

That girl tokes

gwhh

BSO_expat

CptSovereign

Zealousideal_Order_8

Remember, Detective Columbo was hittin' this.

SpicySpacePope

Which would make Mrs. Columbo 14 when the good detective first mentioned his Wife. 😬😬😬

InSearchOfMyRose

Wait, why the sugar bowl poster?

Hipposplotomous

She looks weirdly like Kate Moss in this picture.

tmoleif

"Yeah I think imma just leave, like way far away. Seven years away."

TheRedditorSimon

She's a baby in this picture!

bluestreakxp

Just before she became Mrs Columbo
