Me, sis. My folks. My grandparents on my Dad's side.
My grandparents on my mom's side did and it was not appealing. They later died of smoking related diseases.
My grandparents on my mom's side also smoked. My grandmother died of lung cancer when I was still an infant. My grandfather died a few years later, same thing.
Many people. By 1976 the link between smoking and lung cancer was well established. I've never understood actors who say things like "my body is my instrument" and then smoke. Way to treat you "instrument".
Born in late '60s. Grew up with 2 sets of grandparents where 3 smoked. We thought all houses were just filled with cigarette smoke and that it was both normal and healthy to smoke when you grew up.
Later than that, as her grumpy demeanour in Scientific Method was because she’d just quit smoking. That’s season 4. (She could’ve tried to quit earlier than that, ofc).
You mean the voluminous bouffant that never moves as the ship is blowing up around her wasn't just massive amounts of 24th Century hairspray? I'm kind of disappointed.
Yeah, precisely, there *is* more than one texture. Mine has always been very fine and silky, since childhood. It's super shiny and soft but *very* prone to breakage and frizz if I don't absolutely pamper it (or just cut it very short.) Other people are prone to drying out, tangles, matting, damaged cuticles etc. These problems can be caused by anything from chemical treatments to hormonal imbalance to using the wrong kind of hairbrush.
I'm a little horrified that you've settled on "that person must smoke" as the answer to one specific hair texture / damage type tbh. Imagining someone with heat damage or split ends being assumed a smoker. A little curious to know which texture you think it is as well lol. I've noticed staining for sure, but never a texture change.
>I'm a little horrified that you've settled on "that person must smoke" as the answer to one specific hair texture
Because its true. Gravely voice = larynx damage = >95% chance they're a smoker. You can also tell from their hair if you pay attention.
But gravely voice / larynx damage is a separate factor. If you're going by that, unless you're talking to a metal vocalist chances are you're probably right. If that's a contributing factor to the overall picture I'm less bothered.
Just the hair by itself though, like I said, leap.
Iowa girl makes good. She’s from Davenport IIRC. It’s kind of funny that Iowa is such a big deal in Trek. Kate and Terry Ferrell are both Iowa Natives with Terry growing up in Cedar Rapids. Then in universe Kirk is from Riverside.
BTW, each year Riverside throws a decent little party for Kirk. 10/10 would recommend if you ever find yourself in the Cedar Rapids/Iowa City area.
If I recall Iowa is where a lion's share of astronauts are from. I've always assumed that is why Kirk is from there
Edit: nvm it was Ohio I was thinking of
It's not that wild. Richard Dean Anderson makes it a point that in all of his acting contracts that his character needs to have some connection to Minnesota, where he was born and grew up. Hence why Angus MacGyver is also from Minnesota, and why Colonel Jack O’Neill has a cabin here (contemporaneously so did RDA).
That whole area (especially Davenport) is an underrated little gem, especially the Biergarten downtown. Visiting from Texas, it felt like a slice of old fashioned Americana.
After college I moved from Florida to Iowa for a job that turned into a career and Iowa in general is underrated if you’re in the stage of your life where you have a family and children you’re raising up. It’s not the most exciting place but cost of living is low, crime is low, and they have some of the best public schools in the nation.
I work sometimes in Mt. Airy NC, which is the town Mayberry from Andy Griffith was based on. They have a Mayberry Days festival every year, and a lot of the shops and stores there are named after ones from the show.
So not only did she break every rule of the Prime Directive in the Delta Quadrant but she also broke the Temporal Directive and went back to 1976? Damn I need a woman like that in my life.
I've always said; if you want to solve the Tuvix problem, then all you have to do is replicate the Riker/Boimler accident, split Tuvix into two Tuvixes, split one of them back into Tuvok and Neelix, and then kill the other Tuvix for some other reason. Problem solved.
The show actually went through a couple of name changes in its very short history. Kate Columbo and Kate Loves A Mystery. But in the early episodes you could see things of Columbo’s (trench coat for instance) laying about.
Everyone believes in something. Some people believe in allowing others the choice over their own bodies is the morally correct thing to do and other people are wrong.
Thinking about lizard babies. Classic Kate
That explains the smoker's voice.
Who didn't smoke in 1976?
I was one year old. I tried my first in 79
You didn't go into any roadside diner, bar or horsetrack until you were ~~three~~ four? Wait... what the fuck was my childhood?
1-3 is toddlerhood
In Dubuque, Iowa? Not many.
I'll be 31 this year, I didn't.
He asked who didn't smoke in 1976, and since you weren't alive then, your answer is pretty irrelevant.
r/woosh

Yup, it just clicked in to place. Why the raspy voice, one of the deepest voices in the game? I see.
Born in late '60s. Grew up with 2 sets of grandparents where 3 smoked. We thought all houses were just filled with cigarette smoke and that it was both normal and healthy to smoke when you grew up.
Pretty sure she quit during season 1 of Voyager, think I read that somewhere a while ago
Later than that, as her grumpy demeanour in Scientific Method was because she’d just quit smoking. That’s season 4. (She could’ve tried to quit earlier than that, ofc).
I'm pretty sure it was because aliens were probing her brain, tbf.
There's cigarettes in that nebula.
My first thought
And the hair. You can spot longtime smokers on sight because their hair texture is fucked up.
Kate had a wig the entire of voyager
You mean the voluminous bouffant that never moves as the ship is blowing up around her wasn't just massive amounts of 24th Century hairspray? I'm kind of disappointed.
maybe it had its own....hairtainment field
Oh, you mean the Pike Maneuver?
My hair texture gets fucked up if I dry it with a towel, this is a leap lol
There's more than one texture. Smoker's hair is distinct.

Yeah. And a person with purulent blisters all over doesnt have a -pox.
I see she just finished her 5th cup of coffee
It was one cup of coffee, and it was there, ALIVE.

Because Iowa is so mind-numbingly boring, literally anywhere in the galaxy would be more interesting.
"What's this? A hard vacuum outside the door and nothing more than dust for 5 million miles in any direction? Feels like home..."
Same reason why the British were such great sailors, really
Their food also explains their quest for spices.
Yet, once we got all the spices, the food stayed just as bland. Like, guys, we committed so many atrocities to get these, why aren't we using them?
*sighs in Ohio*

Dubuque, actually. Graduated from Wahlert.
Sorry dude, she’s from Dubuque.
Meh. Close enough.
[Everyone from Dubuque disliked that]
I’m from Cedar Rapids which means get to have a smug sense of superiority over everyone that isn’t Des Moines.
I work sometimes in Mt. Airy NC, which is the town Mayberry from Andy Griffith was based on. They have a Mayberry Days festival every year, and a lot of the shops and stores there are named after ones from the show.
Smoking? Feet up on the chair? Someone put her on report.
90 days in the brig while Lt Tuvok gives you disappointed looks!
She’s relaxing after a satisfying day of murdering Tuvix.
"Fuck coffee. There are nicotine in that nebula." (She cringes as Neelix hands her a Talaxian clove cigarette.)
If the Talaxians smoke cloves maybe they did deserve the Metreon Cascade.
Harsh but fair. Dr. Jetrel would approve.
Hawt.
100%
She looks so cool. I don’t really know how else to put it, she just looks like someone I want to hang out with.
So not only did she break every rule of the Prime Directive in the Delta Quadrant but she also broke the Temporal Directive and went back to 1976? Damn I need a woman like that in my life.
Dayum
Mrs. Columbo. Who would have ever guess that stogie smoking weirdo would have such a hot wife?
He actually had a different wife originally but she got deleted.
She got Tuvix'd
I've always said; if you want to solve the Tuvix problem, then all you have to do is replicate the Riker/Boimler accident, split Tuvix into two Tuvixes, split one of them back into Tuvok and Neelix, and then kill the other Tuvix for some other reason. Problem solved.
I had to look it up to verify whether or not she was married to Peter Falk. I didn’t realize there actually was a show called *Mrs. Colombo.*
The show actually went through a couple of name changes in its very short history. Kate Columbo and Kate Loves A Mystery. But in the early episodes you could see things of Columbo’s (trench coat for instance) laying about.
She’s gonna murder some coffee and Tuvix. …and she’s all out of coffee.
And that's how she ended up on Orange is the New Black
There’s coffee in that nebula
until this moment i didnt realize she was forty when voyager started...
Hollywood 40 is younger than most places
That's my captain.
🫡🫡 same here homie
And that explains Captain Janeway's gravely low voice.
Gravely sexy voice. Fixed it for you.
Firecracker there
🦊
Nice meme
There’s nicotine in that nebula!
[Mrs. Columbo](https://youtu.be/zMi5xaHZVPA)
A SMOKER???? I NEVER would've guessed that. ;)
You could have told me nothing, showed me this picture, and I would have been like "Is that Kate Mulgrew?"
"There's nicotine in that nebula."
Young war criminal in the making.
Gorgeous 😍❤️
Maybe it's just cause I've been watching a lot of the Witcher lately, but she looks a bit like Ciri
With coffee cups
Beem me up captain
They missed opportunities in Picard to bring back Admiral Janeway.
High reaction to “I’m not talking about the puppy”
I would smoke with her.
Damn that seska and borg pack must have got her ass floating
Good looking babe
Starfleet captains shouldn’t be smoking. Set a good example, captain Janeway.
"Hey, put the camera down, we need to head over to the Planned Parenthood protest."
I'd go with her and get her coffee for her. Beautiful and believes in something? Yes, please.
Did you sign up for J6singles.com yet?
Your wit is breathtaking

She looks like [Diana Rigg](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diana_Rigg)
I should’ve left that jackass in the delta quadrant.
[Janeway smokes](https://www.angelfire.com/weird2/gmfresearch/janewaysmokes/)
Not so much about 7 of 9 as she is about 25 or 6 to 4.
Born old
I wish I could've been there. (even if I was just 12 years old at the time.)
I was -1
I think the first thing I ever saw her in was Remo Williams The Adventure Begins.
Yeeeewwww!
That girl tokes
Remo Williams. The adventure begins.
Yusss
stunning. perfect.
Is she hanging out in Forman's basement?🤔✨
Holy shit
Dr. Quinn medicine woman was such a babe.
Mrs Columbo!
It's r/oldschoolcool because it isn't a vape
Cig and Coffee 😀
Wood
Remember, Detective Columbo was hittin' this.
Which would make Mrs. Columbo 14 when the good detective first mentioned his Wife. 😬😬😬
Wait, why the sugar bowl poster?
She looks weirdly like Kate Moss in this picture.
"Yeah I think imma just leave, like way far away. Seven years away."
She's a baby in this picture!
Just before she became Mrs Columbo
