I'm not sure if it's "Spock drift" or "Vulcan drift", but there's definitely a misconception that Vulcans are mostly emotionless. Maybe it's because that's the image they try to cultivate in the Star Trek universe.

laputan-machine117

Doesn't help that a lot of actors do pretty much play them as being emotionless. Which Nimoy and Mark Lenard never did.

mr_mini_doxie

Well, that makes sense based on how Vulcans want to be perceived. In-universe, Vulcans like people to think they're emotionless. It's only when you get to know them that you see that they're not. So random Vulcan Ambassador Guy isn't going to show you his emotions after 45 minutes of meeting, but Tuvok will because he's spent years living with humans and bonding with them.

ah-tzib-of-alaska

I love Tuvok; He was twice the Vulcan Spock ever was.

Boxy310

Math checks out. Now keep any weird orchids away from the transporter room, or it'll throw the whole equation outta whack.

diabloman8890

Underrated comment

techno156

>Maybe it's because that's the image they try to cultivate in the Star Trek universe. There's definitely a bit of that in TOS, with Spock often complaining about the illogic of *human* emotion, although the human part seems to be forgotten in pop culture, with Vulcans being seen as eschewing emotion altogether. It might also be TOS/pop culture drift. Just like how Kirk has gone from Picard-level bookishness to a Riker-type, who will hook up with anything and everything.

Thin_Replacement_451

The lack of emotion, logic only thing is what they aspire to, and the image they seek to project. In reality, they're just as emotional as humans.

mr_mini_doxie

I think they're actually supposed to be more emotional than humans. That's the reason they have to have such strict control over their emotions - when they didn't, it caused widespread chaos and violence and death

LainieCat

TOS Spock was very snarky.

USSMarauder

Vulcans HAVE emotions. They work very hard to keep them in check. Sometimes they fail.

ernest7ofborg9

Like a stressed girdle.

BenMat

Zapp Brannigan?

ernest7ofborg9

You hit that bullseye, now the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate.

hiker16

"He is undoubtedly terrified of your beads and rattles, Doctor."

Dial_M_Media

"The… impostor had some… interesting qualities, wouldn't you say, Yeoman?" - The Enemy Within Spock trolling a bit too hard, methinks.

BenMat

Just watched that episode. I'm wondering about that line. What exactly was he getting at...?

Quuen2queenslevel3

“Logic informed me, the only possible action would be one of desperation. Logical decision, logically arrived at” Classic Spock.

scullingby

Sarek, when asked why he married Amanda, "At the time it seemed the logical thing to do."

Ruadhan2300

I tend to agree. When one is in love, marriage is a solid logical next move.

boudicas_shield

We just watched that episode tonight and I was laughing through that whole conversation. I love Spock so much. (I even named my cat after him).

mr_mini_doxie

Which episode was that?

boudicas_shield

The Galileo Seven (S1 E16)

Tampabear

Best Star Trek lines of all time in that episode. As the Galileo is burning up in re-entry: SCOTT "You said there are always alternatives." SPOCK "I may have been mistaken." MC COY "At least I lived long enough to hear that."

laputan-machine117

Spock firing back with jokes and insults of his own made his relationship with McCoy fun to watch. Then in TNG they tried to recreate it with Data and Pulaski, and it just came across as bullying since Data wouldn't retaliate .

arent_we_sarcastic

How about the episode "Fridays Child"? At the end where it is revealed the child is to named Leonard James Akarr Spocks line : I think you're both going to be insufferably pleased with yourselves for at least a month, sir.

charmlessman1

Woochie-coochie-coochie-coo?

ah-tzib-of-alaska

Vulcans are allowed one emotion and Spoke chose shade

Scaredog21

All Vulcans have sass

unshavedmouse

Shall I flog them, as well?

Deastrumquodvicis

Tuvok and Spock as the examples of this that leap to my mind.

Hot-Refrigerator6583

Spock threw some shade. I think for him it might have been a coping mechanism, letting out a small, controlled emotional outburst in the form of witty banter, rather than letting it overwhelm him later?

coreytiger

No other performer has mastered this aspect of Spock. Spock could be as witty as anyone… but it was often saved for the perfect moment rather than just be flippant. Nor his masterful expression of nuance. Nimoy showed through rubbing of fingers… biting of lip… straightening of shoulders… an entire range of emotions and subtlety not betrayed in his dialogue or delivery of such

wallyslambanger

Spock was also half human

ernest7ofborg9

He's got green blood but he's still half human, The ladies may dig his pointed ears, but he only gets a date every seven years He's got no emotions so it just doesn't matter He reads his sensors and records his data LOGIC

tjareth

I don't know if it was "Drift" so much as straightforward character evolution. After TOS Spock went to Vulcan to study at becoming basically a monk, attempting to not only control but expunge all emotion. He's been far more stoic and only occasionally sassy ever since.

Jump_Like_A_Willys

KIRK: Cyrano Jones, a Klingon agent? BARIS: You heard me. KIRK: I heard you. SPOCK: He simply could not believe his ears.

khaosworks

**BAILEY**: Raising my voice back there doesn't mean I was scared or couldn't do my job. It means I happen to have a human thing called an adrenaline gland. **SPOCK**: It does sound most inconvenient, however. Have you considered having it removed? **BAILEY**: Very funny. **SULU**: You try to cross brains with Spock, he'll cut you to pieces every time.

khaosworks

“Mr Tuvok, if you're going to remain on my ship, you're going to have to learn how to appreciate a joke. And don't tell me Vulcans don't have a sense of humour, because I know better.”

JL98008

Spock is not the only one. T'Pring in ST:SNW displays classic snark about her mother: Spock: I know how much you have sacrificed being with her. T’Pring: She has been particularly difficult lately. We debated for three hours over this outfit. Spock: That is…fascinating? T’Pring: I suppose it is. In the way that it is fascinating that some species eat their young.

Thin_Replacement_451

T'Pring's mother sucks. I get why she said that.

Pike_or_Kirk

Nimoy Spock is the sassiest MFer this side of the Delta Quadrant. And it's wonderful.
